QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 11:38 AM) Donald Miller is most excellent. He has three books, if I'm not mistaken, and they're all good. I also like Anne Lamott a lot too. He took me a couple of chapters to really buy into Blue Like Jazz. The only reason I read after the first few chapters is because it was lent to me by a friend whose literary judgments I really trust. But it definitely got a lot better as it went on. But by the end, I really liked his ideas. And he has the most interesting little stories.

QUOTE (sox4lifeinPA @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 05:28 PM) I really don't blame people for that. There's a need for churches to return to Acts 2 attitudes. My pastor pointed out the other day this line: Acts 2: 47 "enjoying the favor of all the people" ALL the people, meaning, those even on the outside of the church were impressed and respectful of the church. When was the last time THAT happened? I'm not asking people to BELIEVE what I believe, but I sure want people to be impressed with how we relate to the community and the good things we do for people. I want people to respect my church for the emphasis we place on serving others. I'm not sure you'd like him, but have you read Don Miller's book "Blue Like Jazz?" It's well written and engaging--even if you don't like his theology. (And, again, I'm not sure you would, but it's a good book.)

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 21, 2008 -> 09:42 AM) I'm going to have to stand up for the minority here, and say that I much prefer Maggie Gylenhall to Katie Holmes. She's a better actress, and in case it matters, better looking, IMO. I agree totally. Katie Holmes was just laughably bad in the first one. The only big problem for me was some dumb person brought her 12 month old to the movie who cried the WHOLE TIME. Someone finally got an usher (after the woman started screaming when people in the theater tried to hush her and the baby). So, in the middle of the party scream this woman stands up and starts screaming (again) how she paid for the f'ing seat and she wasn't going to mf'ing leave and blah, blah, blah. The only time people clapped during/after the movie was when she finally left the theater. Also, the movie made me pretty homesick.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 20, 2008 -> 03:32 AM) THREE DAYS LEFT! I only have like, 17 lists out of over 1,200+ Soxtalk members. Seriously, you guys... Nag and you shall receive.

Have the people that made that list ever been to Aurora?

Has anyone else tried Pandora ( http://www.pandora.com/ )? It basically plays music that it will think that you like based your preferences. It's pretty cool. Everytime you listen to a song and rate it, it will update your preferences, so that the more you listen the less errors in anticipating what you will like will be. It's a cool little learning algorithm.

I pulled off the most amazing surprise party last night. She had no clue we were planning it. Awesome.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 17, 2008 -> 07:51 PM) FlaSoxJim, in the best of all possible worlds, would have been shorthand for "Florida Sox Jim" Alas, on the mlb Sox site back in 2000 when I tried to register, it turned out FlaSoxJim was already taken by someone (never once saw him actually post though). Hence, the redundant 'x' in FlaSoxxJim. Redundant? Heck and this whole time I've been pronouncing BOTH X's. . .

I have pink eye. Damn it.

First I'd pay off my student loans, mortgage, etc (and my parents' and sisters'). Then I'd buy the sweetest Bernina or Husqvarna on the market. Then I'd go on the awesomest vacation in the history of time. Probably put more in trust for my parents' old age and any kids I may have. Then I'd set up a lot of scholarship funds for undergrads (and graduate students). Use the rest (except a little nest egg) to start a nonprofit for my favorite causes.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 03:43 PM) The label's stupid if you don't have anything to substantiate it with. However, IMO, I think the way I described it, he is an eliteist. At least I have a definition. But I bet he can at least spell it.

I think I'll be able to save it for moving expenses for next summer. Woohoo!

I have an unusual name--but I'm told it's a very popular name in Greece. I really hated having an unusual name when I was younger--but I think it's something you grow into.

I've seen this musical (and read the book), and it's a shame they won't be putting it on. It really is a pretty affecting story about race relations (with some women's rights issues thrown in). It is kind of interesting, because it isn't just white versus black, but also has a little bit more nuanced white on white issues. Shame.

American "news" is in such a s***ty state.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 11:28 AM) No one wonders who the 18th person who didn't have Seinfeld on their list was? Was it me? I thought I put it on, but now I'm wondering. I also was surprised Roseanne didn't crack the top 40.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 30, 2008 -> 10:16 AM) Just the British for me. I feel that the US version is way over the top and becoming more so as the show progresses. I loved the more subtle British version. Me too. I liked the first 2 seasons of the American Office, though.
-
Did anyone have both versions of the office on their list? I just realized I left Spaced! off my list, but I doubt it would have mattered much.

Please. A blow-up doll would be less plastic than that lady.

How Can a "Fellow Black Republican" Oppose Obama?
Soxy replied to Controlled Chaos's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 26, 2008 -> 08:45 AM) Relevant to whom? The Republican party is 95% white. If it mattered to minorities then why aren't they jumping over to the GOP? Really? Where did you get that number? -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 24, 2008 -> 09:01 AM) Mostly because there is an entire 24 hour news industry that exists just to express outrage about things, so that people watch them. Its a sad little circle. I'll be honest, I haven't had cable in about 7 months, and I don't miss tv at all. It's odd, because without the really biased news I am better at catching biased reporting in printed sources. Without the constant barrage of that bulls*** you get a lot better at sifting and thinking for yourself.
