QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 1, 2008 -> 10:56 AM) I agree with the first part of that 100%! Well, that's a start.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 1, 2008 -> 10:28 AM) I can remember a couple of the classes I had in college that the professors couldn't relate to 101 classes. It was just horrible. I learned less from them because they couldn't figure out how to dumb it down enough to teach to an intro level class. But, and I say this with love, Professors, in general, are incapable of relating to other human beings. Palin is, for all of her faults, good at relating to people. So, I would think she's the perfect candidate to bring complex issues to people in a palatable and understandable way. Honestly watching her interviews makes me think she's in over her head.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 25, 2008 -> 07:16 AM) There is always this too. Just because she gives a 101 answer, doesn't mean she doesn't know it on a 401 level. You risk alienating a lot more people the more detail you get into. Its the same reason Obama stayed vague for the first year of his campaign, and ran for President after two years in Congress instead of 6. The less that other party has to pick apart of your record, the better. I don't know. I think that if you really understand something on a 401 level, you can make it accessible to people at a lower level of understanding.

QUOTE (longshot7 @ Sep 30, 2008 -> 04:41 PM) People are really undecided? I'm undecided but not between McCain and Obama.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 30, 2008 -> 06:41 PM) Tonight's CBS Palin Brain-oscopy. Governor Palin, which newspapers do you read? Those interviews with her really remind me of the beauty pageant contestant that had that horrible answer about education.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 30, 2008 -> 01:25 PM) IF we do that (which might not be a bad idea), can we please, for f***ing once, be smart enough to build in an inflationary increase? So that we don't create yet more work for Congress to f*** up later? And what, pray tell, will Congress of the future due without stuff to f*** up? Can congress exist without f***ing up?

So, on a scale of 1 to 10, how nervous should I be about this whole economic mess?

QUOTE (Texsox @ Sep 29, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) Depends on the assignment. If, for example, the assignment in History is to write a paper on the Presidency of Richard Nixon. In a Political Science class it is to discuss Watergate and the implications on future Presidents, why write what would amount to the same paper twice? Should I read the same book twice? You are confusing what college students are paying for. I could research and write those papers for free, I do not need a Professor to assign them. Even better, I could sell them to a newspaper or magazine and get paid. No, these are written to meet some objective set by the University and carried out by the Professor. What I am paying for is the critique offered by the Professor, not the privilege of writing the paper. Perhaps two Professors will look at the same paper and offer the exact same feedback, but I believe that would be rare. Students are paying for college professors to grade and evaluate their work, sure, that's part of it. What is the point of having multiple profs grade the same paper? Not only is it a waste of the professors' time, it also is not helping the students develop their skills as writers. While a lot of skills required in the "real world" do involve revising--I would argue that writing well is even more important. In essence you also ARE paying to write the paper--the practice will help you improve your writing (and hopefully) help you to organize your thoughts in a meaningful way that focuses on the topic at hand. I would argue that you never read the same book twice (just like you never step in the same river twice), once you get into a more specialized field (or have more knowledge) your analysis and reading of the book will be changed and colored by your new knowledge. So, yes, I think it may be beneficial to read the same book twice. I read the same articles multiple times and always walk away with something new. Thinking that you have learned everything after reading a book/article/whatever only once, in my opinion, has a bit of hubris in it that is not conducive to learning.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Sep 29, 2008 -> 11:23 AM) I looked and did not find it, but I'll assume it is there. I guess every teacher wants to be special and have things done specifically for them. Every student brings their entire experience with them to a class. For example every paper I write, every press release, every magazine article, every advertising piece, plagiarizes something I've previously written. That's the real world. Retool a brochure for the web site. Take pieces of the web site for a postcard. Too bad that academia does not better prepare students for the real world. Hey whatever, don't do the work for each class. You're the one paying for an education and failing to take full advantage of it. College students are the only consumers who want to get less for their money.

I make a really delicious garlic/rosemary turkey breast (one day a year I eat meat) for Thanksgiving. I also make good lasagna. But my favorite (albeit showy) dish to make is a chocolate tart.

Sew. I have a boatload of quilting projects to work on (and I'm taking a paper piecing class next weekend). Plus I got a bunch of gorgeous silk very cheap, so I'll probably attempt some dresses too. And I suppose I should work on my dissertation too. . .

Absolutely it's cheating. And if you look in most school's academic handbooks/student handbooks you will see this (at my school called "multiple submissions") discussed in the plagiarism section. I have failed a couple of students for using the same paper in a Research Methods class and a higher level psych course. Of course, I also cover that resubmissions aren't allowed. But they all seem to think I'm too slow to catch them.

Sidebar, but how is Lisa Madigan doing politically? Does it seem likely she'll stay as AG or is there talk of her running for another office?

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 04:04 PM) I don't do grammar checks when I post here. It's hard enough to keep track of it when I have to, I'm certainly not going to waste my time here. Thanks for validating my point by going the route of grammatical criticism though. I'd love to know why you think the opinions of the rich and famous matter. My point was if you are going to talk about what an idiot someone is (much less a Harvard educated person), perhaps you should demonstrate mastery of the English language in your critique. I'm not saying I would be swayed by a person who is famous. My point is more that I won't listen to someone who doesn't understand his (presumably) native language's grammar.

I was opening the door this morning and I caught my toe-nail. I took a huge chunk of skin out from underneath the nailbed and have a decent bruise under the nail. I've also got quite a gash going on the tip of my toe. As well as significant bleeding from the sides of the toe-nail. It hurts real bad. Anyone have any tips for maybe how to keep the nail from falling off or how to alleviate any pain or whatever? Thanks in advance.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 04:55 PM) Fixed. And for the record, I'd say the same thing if they were all republicans. Some rich, famous person's opinion should mean nothing. End of story. The vast, vast majority of them don't even have a clue what they are talking about and say stupid s*** just because they can. That post would have been so much more convincing if it were grammatically correct. I appreciate the irony though.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 10, 2008 -> 04:09 PM) I try to get out, and you drag me back in! If you would have read the story, it says it was her first year vs his last year. So apples to apples. Was he in the middle of running again in his last year? Because if he wasn't, I would argue they weren't comparable because he'd essentially be lame duck.

QUOTE (jheath160 @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 12:48 PM) Quite the opposite. I have a daugher who was born with Down Syndrome, and am involved with a few different support groups in our area. In one of the groups, it seems that I'm in the minority of folks (possibly the only one) who thinks that she's allowing the party to exploit him by making an issue of it. Come on, he's not a circus freak that we're paying to see! He's a child, albeit one with special needs; why make such a huge issue of it (IMHO)? But they're all gushing over it, saying how wonderful it could be. No thanks--I don't agree with using a child like that. Huh, I'm surprised by that.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 02:01 PM) And if any of them had a R after their names, they wouldn't stand a chance of being elected, to anything. Okay, give me one republican community organizer that deserves a high ranking public office.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Sep 5, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) This whole thing is a farce and a huge reason that I hate politics sometimes. My favorite part of Palin's "speech" (aside from the blatant lies, the making fun of people like she's a child, and all that) was her taking a long time to introduce her son who conveniently joins the forces on 9/11, and her other child, who conveniently means votes from those with special needs interests, and her husband, who conveniently reminds us all of our friends, but she completely dissed and ignored her pregnant teenage daughter. Palin should be ashamed of the hate-filled speech she gave. How is her comparing Obama to Christ NOT being ripped apart? Why does she get a free pass? BECAUSE SHE'S A HOCKEY MOM AND DOESN'T BELONG HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE? I doubt that the fact that Palin has a child with Downs Syndrome will affect voting patterns of disability rights people. I vaguely remember Biden being involved with the ADA, right?

I'm pretty excited about Burn After Reading. And I just found out the Coen brothers will be shooting part of their next film at my alma mater. Combining two of my favorite things.
