QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 2, 2008 -> 10:00 PM) You shoulda taken a picture. I would have been classic to see the dog with a "WTF?" look on its face. To be fair, she is a lab mix and that's kind of the only face she has.

I straightened my hair wore khaki's, a cowl neck cami and a cardigan. I also wore my matching pearl sets. I was a WASP. I do have a funny trick-or-treat story, though. So, I have this huge dog (she's a great dane/lab mix) real sweet and just loves kids. So I would answer the door and squeak by the dog to the porch. Well, this one little girl (probably about 6 or 7) really wanted to pet Caton. There weren't a lot of trick-or-treaters out and about at this time, so I think, okay, should be fine. I take the dog outside make her sit and let the little girl pet her. All is going well, when all of a sudden the little girl grabs my dog's face and kisses her on the lips (right below her nose) and like holds the kiss for about 10 seconds. I'm just standing there shocked that, you know, my dog is kind of being molested, or at least is having kissing drills practiced on her. And as this little girl is kissing the dog (for a looooong time) the parents are just standing there saying, oh, how cute! It wasn't cute. It was weird. And now I'll probably need to get dog therapy or something.

Really a huge loss to the literary world and to Chicago.

Is it just me, or is the Libertarian party basically what the Republican party used to be?

Office hours are for undergrads--I just harass my profs as needed. As for me, I would say I am in my office or lab for 90% of my office hours.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 31, 2008 -> 09:19 AM) Whew, I was beginning to think it was only a Michigan City thing... I was going to say if any party ever needed a bar, it's one with 10 screaming children.

I loved Paul Wellstone. Hearing about his death is, I think, as close to a Kennedy moment as I'll ever get with a politician. I also really like Lisa Madigan--I've stopped loving Illinois politicians because they almost always let me down--but I feel good about her. As far as local politics go, I really like my State Assembly Rep: Donna Lupardo.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 29, 2008 -> 02:09 PM) I just can never bring myself to getting one of those. But, I should have... as I said somewhere else, I'm a walking "itis" right now... ear infection, sinus infection, upper respiratory infection. Now if only I would have had that neti pot, I could have prevented all of this. But at least I can sleep at night; codiene cough syrup. I'll be honest, I should have done it long ago. I have been told by a neurologist I have the worst sinuses he's seen in 20 years. I finally gave in and got one because my younger sister's been doing it--and I will not be afraid of doing something she does! Gosh darn it! I would recommend it though--it's AMAZING how well you can breathe after you do it. Mmmm, codeine.

Just in time for cold/sinusitis season I got a neti pot. It is probably the oddest feeling in the world--not unpleasant, but not pleasant either. But hot dog, it works really well. Better than a decongestant.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 07:09 PM) I never thought I would agree with a mormon. So, why are you pro-Prop 8?
-
QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 29, 2008 -> 11:46 AM) Then there would be no need for civil unions or marriages in a government, legal context. Only a religious context. That would be workable. legally they would still be needed for visitation rights, property and inheritance stuff, right?
-
QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 07:37 PM) Bingo. You and I agree 100% on this issue. Has hell frozen over? It is really damn cold here. . .

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 06:57 PM) finally thank you. I don't understand what part of my " I don't agree with this, but this is their argument" part of the post lost people. Not even you are dumb enough to believe that.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 05:18 PM) I believe the argument to vote yes on this proposition is that the fundamental structure of our society would be adversely effected by gay marriage. I don't agree with this assessment, but I think that is the logic behind the proposition. I think they are concerned that all kinds of crazy people will be demanding to marry an assortment of crazy things; like some nerd that wants to marry his Super Nintendo wins a court case stating his civil rights were impeded by him not having a legal marriage. So I guess if the institution of marriage was completely degraded into joke status, yea maybe that could change our societal structure in a negative way. I know that isn't your logic, but the whole, if gays and lesbians can marry people will marry cows!!!!1!!!! drives me up the wall. A marriage is (for the intents and purposes of Prop 8) a legal contract. You cannot enter into a legal contract with a nintendo, or a dog, or a cat. So, I think that is really a straw man type of argument. Either way, I agree with NSS72, I think marriage should not be a government word. Marriage is a religious institution, and should be left as such. Civil unions are the only thing the government should regulate. And for the record, as a citizen I'm mortified that gays and lesbians can't enter into a government contract with each other like civil unions (or, if the government must meddle: marriage). As an Episcopalian, I'm proud of the recent inclusive steps my church governing structure has taken, but they still have quite a way to go.

QUOTE (The Critic @ Oct 28, 2008 -> 10:12 AM) Sets of brothers I would rather have running Illinois instead of the Daleys: The Coen Brothers I would move back to Illinois immediately if this happened. But in a serious note, wasn't one of the Smothers Brothers actually really politically involved or it affected his career or something?

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 24, 2008 -> 03:06 PM) Birds? Interesting. How do you feel about scorpions? I'd prefer not to deal with them. My dad made me watch the birds when I was about 5. That's probably the best explanation I can offer.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 24, 2008 -> 11:37 AM) I still think Snakes are worse than Spiders though. I'm Indiana Jones bad when it comes to Snakes. In order: 1.) Snakes 2.) Spiders 3.) Birds 4.) Milli/Centipedes

I donate to my undergrad university (obviously). I loved that place and I think it really fostered a sense of community and was a place where I met some of my closest friends. But there is not a chance in France I will give a cent to the place I'm getting my PhD.

I'm on my alma mater's annual giving committee--and I thought I'd ask. If you give, what makes you want to donate? If you don't donate, why don't you want to? What could persuade you to give?

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 23, 2008 -> 09:16 AM) After 15 minutes I was rooting for the Ocean. True story: I was like 15 or 16 when that came out, so I went with all my little friends. I thought it was just awful. So overwrought and just annoying. I kept sighing and making comments--I had some bruises from my friends by the end. That almost made me cry. Anyway, movies that made me cry (I admit I am a movie crybaby, I rarely cry other times, but whatever. Don't you judge me!): Wall-E Life is Beautiful (for about 3 weeks afterward too) The Diving Bell and the Butterfly It's a Wonderful Life Mr. Smith Goes to Washington Harvey Vertigo (when he loses her the 2nd time) The Pride of the Yankees Sense and Sensibility Field of Dreams Forrest Gump The Lives of Others Iris (I think that's what it is called, the Iris Murdoch biography) Good Will Hunting Whale Rider Love Actually Pan's Labyrinth La Orfeanato (spelling?) Finding Neverland To Kill a Mockingbird Casablanca Philadelphia An Affair to Remember On the Waterfront Any movie involving a dog dying Cool Hand Luke Mystic River (again, for weeks)

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 22, 2008 -> 11:07 AM) HOw many times are there threads about "hot chicks" or a "hot chick contest" or someone says "damn. I'd do her"? A LOT. I make a comment about Palin and "OMG! HOW SEXIST!" I don't read those threads. I read this one. And yeah, it's sexist. I don't like the woman. I think she's dangerous, unqualified, and, well, you all know. But I can't stand sexist jokes about her. There are plenty of other jokes to be made. Now if it was a sophisticated joke about the Republican party about how they nominated a totally unqualified candidate, and suddenly awoke to their "nakedness" in her nomination, then, yeah, I would laugh.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Oct 22, 2008 -> 10:56 AM) Maybe I'm missing something but what's so tasteless about it? Just seemed like a random shot on a message board to me. Would someone make such a crude sexual joke about a male candidate? It's the same as the age jokes about McCain. There are so many other options. Why go for that one?
-
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 22, 2008 -> 10:42 AM) it's just a joke Obviously. But a poor tasteless one.
