  1. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 22, 2008 -> 10:21 AM) can we give her the emperors new clothes? Really, no comment. I just wanted you to read that again.
  2. Linkage So, what do you all think? Cool? Sacrilege? Orthodox? Heretic? On the plus side, picking something out for my dad for Christmas just got a lot easier.
  3. Remember that time (ages ago) when I complained about all the republicans posting in the dem thread? Yeah, me too.
  4. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 04:32 PM) As for the Trib, I'm not. Call my cynical, but that's one of those "home field" calls. They'd probably have gotten a lot of crap if they didnt support him and the GOP would have said something like "his home town paper wont even endorse Obama". The trib endorsement was shocking. Obama is so far from a fiscal conservative that I wasn't sure what they would do. I honestly think that if McCain would have picked a different running mate the Trib would have endorsed him instead.

    Baseball Hall of Fame

QUOTE (mreye @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 03:03 PM) Cool. Thanks. Good to hear that the food was good at all the places. Yeah, but everything tastes good that close to the baseball hall. Like how popcorn is always better at the park.

QUOTE (mreye @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 02:42 PM) Thanks for the replies. Yeah, we've already planned to go to Ommegang. It's a guys trip, are there any good pub like places or sports bars to watch the World Series? I can't remember the name of it. But we watched a game in some bar that was off the main street. Each time I've gone I've eaten in a different local pub, and the food has always been awesome. And there's always a game on. I wish I could remember the name of my favorite one. It's off the main street, and you have to take a few steps down (it's a little below street level) and it was just really cool. Clean, great food, fun atmosphere (and not as touristy as some).

You're lucky to go this time of year. Upstate is at its most beautiful right about now. If you are outdoorsy, you won't be that far from the really, really, really beautiful Adirondack State Park. They have some decent trails. And it's definitely worth the trip. Cooperstown is pretty small and cutesy. Other than the hall there isn't really a ton to do. (There are lots of shops, but I found most of them pretty overpriced.) The hall is pretty awesome--I've been 3 times and spent at least 5 hours each time. Legend field is fun. I've never been there for an actual game, but it's a great place to just sit. Make sure you take lots of pictures with the pinwheel from Old Comiskey.
  8. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 01:10 PM) Whatever, I am done. Republicans are just consumed with hate, and the poor little liberals/Democrats are just glowing with Hope and Change. Let those that do no wrong and see no evil, unless it is perpetrated by a republican, enjoy the sweetness that is Obama and this election season. Enjoy what you get. Who in this thread said that? Who? Even the dems in this thread have said, it's a two way street.
  9. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Oct 19, 2008 -> 09:13 PM) They have not much to do with Obama, but with many of his rabid supporters. i was told that the right is filled with hate, and when I pointed out that it was the left that is fond os shtting down speech and actions they don't like, like threatening radio stations, shouting down speakers they disagree with and violence against others, it was just dismissed as not true. I am pointing out that it is true. While both sides have their rabid psycho fans, the left has more than their fair share of them, and they are way more violent and destructive, as I am pointing out. McCain and Obama are both running dirty campaigns. I don't think you can be a politician nowadays and not do it. But is is not one sided, as some of those on theleft would have us believe. And with the voraciousness of many of his supporters, Obama himself can just sit back and let his minions do a lot of the dirty work for him. Did you know that there was a website out there with a 'kill Sarah Palin' flash game? It got taken down after 2 days, but can you imagin if there was one for Obama? Hate is truely bi-partisan. Right, awesome. But is that what you want to contribute to this discussion? Do you want to be the RSS feed for anger and hatred? Really? Of course there are nustos. Of course there are. Are they more crazy than their right counterparts. Probably not. But by focusing on them we are unable to have a meaningful discussion here. We are just perpetuating the crazies. We are giving them a voice. We are giving them the attention they want so badly. Forget them. I can't imagine that anyone here truly believes the right has a monopoly on anger problems. But this thread is so petty. So petty. Don't give more voice to the hate mongers. You are so much better than that. Ignore the people that drag political discourse through the mud. They are exactly what is wrong with this country. They are the ones that make negative ads so effective. They are the ones that make civil political discourse so infrequent in this country. Why give more voice to the people who really have nothing to say? They don't deserve it.
  10. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 19, 2008 -> 08:45 PM) Good grief. If you look at the stuff that AHB posts every single day, you can see it. NEITHER McCain (when his people starts their crap) NOR Obama will denounce it, because it serves their purpose. That's all I'm trying to say, and I'm not trying the Alpha approach. I think it's been a terribly dirty campaign ON BOTH SIDES, and every time that's said everyone gets upset because it "hurts Obama's (McCain's) image". I'm not speaking for you, but just watch every time it comes up. People get crazy upset when it gets brought up. I'm seriously not trying to be an ass. I'm not arguing that. And I think you can see, consistently, in my posts that I vindicate both sides of the extreme line. My point is that you complain that people are being an ass. You make up snarky names for Obama. And then you act all offended by AD and AHB's posts. How is your often mocking and sarcastic tone raising the level of discussion? It's just sort of the problem that is embodied with this thread. Instead of trying to raise the level of discourse and ignoring the people who are bringing it down--everyone basically runs over to the line and smear crap all over it. Because the other side is being hypocritical we all have to be. If you don't like the current tone, don't stoop to the current tone. Drop the stupid nicknames. Don't constantly point at AHB or AD; perhaps (no offense) they aren't the posters we should focus on for political discussion. Rise above it. Be the person you wish Obama and McCain would be during the campaign, you know? When we spend so much time on the board focusing on the people bringing it down--instead of the issues, well, we're not helping. I totally hate the mudslinging. Really I do. So I try really hard to stay above the fray. And, in general, I think I do okay. And with that, gentlemen, I've said my piece and counted to three.
  11. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 19, 2008 -> 08:36 PM) Really? See what Alpha's posting. Where's this coming from? Obama doesn't "need" to be clean. His surrogates are doing just fine. Notice what I said about McCain, though. That guy has stooped to s*** throwing like no other, and I'm extremely disappointed in that. It makes it worse. But, I continue to see (even on this board) about how RSO's taking the high road. He's not. So that's not a straw man argument. It's fact. What do those posts have to do with Obama? Yeah, some of his supporters are nutsy and think he's crazy. But all of them? No. Not at all. Ah f*** it. This thread has no room for rational thought and discussion. It's a place for broad generalizations or fringe crazies.
  12. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 19, 2008 -> 09:00 PM) Bush is charismatic? Please. Furthermore, research, analysis, consideration, and pulling information from Democrats - woot! Corrected that for you. RSO's only saying the stuff he does now because he thinks it will get him "evengelical" votes, and if they are stupid enough to not see through that smokescreen, they deserve what we're about to see for the next 4 years. All I hope is that there's enough votes in the Senate to filibuster everything so nothing gets done. Especially nannystate health care. Bush is charismatic. And I don't even know what RSO stands for. I'm assuming it's something derogatory and snarky, so I guess I prefer it that way. I wonder if we could ever actually have a political discussion here without mocking undertones (from both sides now). Wait, no I don't.
  13. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 18, 2008 -> 09:47 AM) After Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann's McCarthy-like tirade on Hardball yesterday I went ahead and donated to her Democratic opponent. I still follow MN politics, and that woman. Wowzers.
  14. QUOTE (shipps @ Oct 18, 2008 -> 09:38 AM) You sold me on it Soxy. Now I want to ignore someone,it doesnt even matter who cause its so much fun. AND it makes you more attractive to the opposite sex! It's like beer, but with less calories!
  15. Just another friendly reminder about the lovely ignore feature we offer (free of charge!) here at Soxtalk! Is there someone that raises your heckles, rankles your cankles, shreds your last nerve? Ignore 'em! It's easy, it's fun, it's free. And it keeps you from stooping to their level! A PSA from Soxy (global mod extraordinaire)!
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 17, 2008 -> 06:45 PM) The Tribune has switched sides. They are endorsing the democratic nominee, for the first time ever. I'll admit I was surprised by that. To NSS, I've actually met Kucinich and he seems pretty normal. Short, but normal.
  17. I loves it when we stoop to the level of what we dislike. It is as Nietzsche said: Whoever battles with monsters had better see that it does not turn him into a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 17, 2008 -> 12:44 PM) I have absolutely no urge to go see this movie. I've lived through the nightmare that is the last 8 years already, why do I want to review how we got there? That. Exactly that.

    Project Runway finale

QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 04:34 PM) When you don't listen to Tim Gunn, you are going down. As well you should.
  20. QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Oct 14, 2008 -> 10:13 PM) Can anyone really blame Obama looking at his wife? I think Michelle is really pretty. Certainly better looking than he is. Anyway. I take what I call the Elliot Spitzer approach to cheating/immoral activities. In general, I don't care. Truly don't care. It's not my business. I've made personal mistakes and I hope that I am not being judged by past mistakes. If it doesn't affect your job performance (and isn't illegal), it really isn't my business. It's a personal matter. I DO care when someone is really hypocritical in their dalliances (ala Spitzer). Don't claim to be pro-family and marriage if you're going to cheat on your wife. Don't crack down on prostitution stings if you're getting services from the prostitutes. Don't lecture me about drug usage when you're popping the vicodin. Don't be a dick about gay rights if you're into anonymous gay sex.

    Project Runway finale

Awesome commentary! I was so happy Leanne won, yeah, she kind of has the personality of one of her noodles. BUT her designs were so elegant and feminine and really unique. She was my favorite. The two people I watched the finale with weren't feeling Leanne. Thank god Kenley didn't win. Ugh. Those ropes were awful, and she's just a copycat.
  22. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 15, 2008 -> 04:01 PM) And you know what? It's not the GOP's fault. But you find it easy to say "you had your chance"... that's laughable, so have the Democrats, and guess what? Their crap don't work so well either - Bill Clinton was just smart enough to go with the GOP in the 1990's, until the GOP started going left, so maybe in that sense, it is their fault... but it's not for the reason you say. How did the GOP "go left"? You mean financially?
  23. I will, obviously, be watching the Project Runway finale. Then I'll probably watch the debate tomorrow morning on the internets.
  24. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 02:50 PM) Heh True story. And a word for word quote out of her mouth.
  25. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 01:48 PM) I just really laugh at people who want to see government run health care. NEWS FLASH: IT WILL NOT BE ANY BETTER THEN WHAT WE HAVE TODAY. No offense personally, bmags. It just is not an issue I will EVER trust the government to get right. People will die that don't today. It's just about that simple. /waiting for 10 billion articles from leftist blogs telling me how I'm wrong and how f'ed up today's sytem is (yes, s*** happens), but I know from personal experience from working in the industry. It will not be better, but just go on drinking the kool-aid. I think that depends. I make less than 20k a year. I have minimal health insurance and no dental or vision plan. Even a s***ty government program would be better for me. When I start making in the upper 6 digits, then yeah, private health insurance will be better. But for the working poor, well, it sucks currently.
