I saw the 5th one yesterday. They cut some of my favorite parts of the book. But the movie was really well done. I felt like I was watching a real movie--not just part of a series, if that makes sense. And now, looking forward to the book. I really hope Neville doesn't die.

QUOTE(Brian @ Jul 13, 2007 -> 03:03 PM) Right. I was just wondering if the next movie/6th book, is more hype for Lord Voldemort and won't see a final battle until the 7th and final book. The sixth book is really more history. You learn tons about Voldemort's past--but there's no big show down with the big V. You'll have to wait, sorry Brian.
  3. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 13, 2007 -> 10:26 AM) I don't care what Soxy says, most "scientists" tend to be more "liberal" in their thinking, and align themselves with "Democrat" principles in this country. The European scientists, well, they are going to have the "social" slant anyway. It's just the way it is. I use these terms "loosely" to describe political persuasion, not to "insult" a way of thinking. Again, tell me how you know so much about the scientific process--how things get funded and how things get published. Because I don't think you know enough to be spouting such outrageous accusations of gross scientific mis-conduct. Even the biggest assholes in my field (I've met them and can verify their assholity) will publish a paper to critique their own theory and contradict what they believe. Why? Because ultimately it is the criticisms of science that drive it forward. Creating a completely unified data set that all point to one thing would drive a researcher out of business, so there's absolutely no reason to do.
  4. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 12, 2007 -> 10:49 PM) Must be a mountain of damn good evidence if you rushed clean past hypothesis and elevated straight to theory status. Somebody's going to make you retake those comps if you keep throwing around the T-word so freely. I am not going to lie, we aren't even to hypothesis stage yet in my area. We're still wandering around in the pseudoscientific wilderness with our thumbs up our asses. How about we call where the global warming stuff is "paradigmatic selection phase." Would a little Kuhn tickle your fancy here? (On a related note: how do you feel speech production and perception are related? )
  5. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 12, 2007 -> 08:21 PM) So am I just going to get that post every time I post a "gut feeling"? The truth is, you can't PROVE, nor can these other people, PROVE beyond 100% shadow of a doubt that "global warming" exists. Let me put it this way. About 99% of the "global warming" scientists wouldn't have a job or funding to do research if they said it was just "climatalogical changes" in the earth and that humanity couldn't destroy earth (short of a nuclear explosion) if they tried. The earth will always adapt and change. Nope, you won't get it everytime you post a gut feeling--but when your gut feeling can easily be supported or not with a simple lit search, you better bet your ass I'm going to ask you to back up your opinions. As for your theory about funding, back it up. Tell me how you know about how funding of scientific research works. Because what you say is absolute bulls***. Plenty of research gets done that doesn't necessarily have to have an immediate application (that is why we call it basic research). So, please enlighten me about how grants really work. And you're right, nothing is every proven. But when you have empirical evidence that is all pointing in the same direction, well, that tells me that a theory is doing a damn fine job of predicting what it should.
  6. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 12, 2007 -> 07:58 PM) What about the argument that global warming is a manipulation of what's really (not) happening? Okay, give me 5 primary sources that say something to that effect. And I mean from peer reviewed actual academic scholarly articles.

  8. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 12, 2007 -> 06:22 AM) Maybe it's time I learnt the American National Anthem instead of just the last 2 lines. Melodically it's really hard. I've noticed when I go to games most people just listen to the singer rather than sing along. Personally, I like America the beautiful better (melodically and lyrically)
  9. In a related note, the police will be giving an update on the Stebic case at 3:30 this afternoon (per the Trib) naming the husband as a "person of interest." One good thing out of this mess is it brough the disappearance back into the spot.
  10. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 12, 2007 -> 10:40 AM) That is a wholly inaccurate statement, Kap. In March the White House disclosed that Miers proposed firing all 93 USAs after the the 2004 election and it was Kyle Sampson who pointed out to her the practical and political reasons that couldn't be done. Instead, Sampson sent Miers a chart in 2005 laying out a formula for deciding which USAs should get fired. The communications between Sampson and Miers indicate close coorcination between White House officials and DOJ in deciding who got canned, how, and why. How exactly do you come to the conclusion that Miers "had NOTHING to do with any of this crap"? he had a gut feeling?
  11. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Jul 12, 2007 -> 10:24 AM) I'll have to look him up. What section does he write in? Metro, I think. I can't get the Trib out here, but it's always on the mainpage of their website.
  12. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Jul 12, 2007 -> 10:09 AM) I've been kinda going back and forth with my with my wife about this. She and all the news programs keep hammering the fact she is in a bikini. I say...who cares? Since when did bikini become such a dirty word? Since when did bikini become construed as having an affair or doing something immoral. Women wear bikini's around other men all the time. Would it have been better if she was in a one piece? I think the big deal here is that she brought her kids over to a murder suspects house. DUMB DUMB DUMB. I'm sure she felt safe and all. Even if this guy did off his wife he hasn't shown anything to say he is a mass murderer and he's going to kill other people and children too, but still. This guy may have murdered his wife in cold blood. Is that who you want your kids to hang around. Lets just assume for a quick second that her story is true(as much as we never want to do that). She hadn't spent any time with her kids. She promised them they would go to the pool. Then on her way she gets this phone call. She thinks she can get some big scoop and the kids will still get to go to a pool. There's other mothers and other children there as well. Yeah it was a dumb decision. You shouldn't mix your private time and professional time, but I'm sure she's not the first reporter to do it. And if she did get some big scoop, NBC wouldn't give a s*** how she obtained it or what she was wearing when she did so. If this was Chuck Goudie in that exact same situation, brought his kids there, wore his swim trunks would this even be a story?? No, because nobody would assume anything sexual between the two guys. It should be a story, because it's a reporter subjecting his kids to a murder suspect, but it wouldn't be. Throw in a female reporter though and this has some nice tabloidness to it. This is pretty much how Eric Zorn at the Trib has been talking about this situation. And I tend to agree. The most disturbing part to me is that she brought the kids. I don't think she was having an affair (or that there really is anything salacious about this story), but I do think she definitely showed poor judgment.

    Dr. Brian May

Is he nuts? Man, if I had that much money I would be out of grad school so fast I might break the sound barrier. Queen star finishes PhD thesis after 30 years Wed Jul 11, 7:08 PM ET LONDON (AFP) - After more than 30 years which he spent as a member of one of the world's most successful bands, Queen guitarist Brian May has finally finished his PhD thesis which he began as a student in the 1970s, The Times reported on Thursday. May, 59, earned a degree in physics at Imperial College London but after years of studying interplanetary dust, he abandoned work towards his doctorate when Queen took off. His interest in the subject was reignited when he co-authored "Bang! The Complete History of the Universe", which tells the story of the universe from the big bang through its subsequent evolution, and was released last year. "For the last nine months, I've done nothing except slave over my PhD, which is now written up, thank God," May reportedly told students at a ceremony at Exeter University in southwest Britain when he received an honorary doctorate. "But there are times when you really want to give up. There are times when you go, 'Why on earth did I take this on?'" May worked on the PhD between 1971 and 1974, and kept all his hand-written notes on the subject through the years, finally discovering them in his loft recently. "People are aware he is here and there is a feeling it is pretty cool that he has come back to finish his PhD, even if he has not been hugely visible," Abigail Smith, a spokeswoman for Imperial College, was quoted as saying by The Times. The rocker will receive his PhD next May, assuming his thesis is approved by supervisors.

  17. QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Jul 11, 2007 -> 01:54 PM) Not true. Some in the media and public have speculated about "how things look," but the police have repeatedly said that he is not a suspect nor a person of interest. Didn't they say that about Vaugn up until the moment they arrested his pathetic butt?
  18. I heard the jury's still out on science. Obviously I'm a bit biased here. I do keep general tabs on the big headlines of science, but I sure as hell don't get it from mainstream news. I'll look up source articles or periodically take a gander through one of the "big" journals (science, nature, etc). I admit I'm a science snob. So, I don't really listen to what the current administration says about science, because I'd rather hear from the scientists. I also realize that that not all Americans are educated consumers of science (which has roots in our educational system--but I digress), so I think it's important they have access to an accurate portrayal of current findings but, sadly, naive to expect it from the land of politicians and lobbyists. Speaking of Science--where's Balta been lately?
  19. I can sing Australia's national anthem. Prize please!
  20. QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 11, 2007 -> 10:19 AM) Because the guy feels like something is going to happen? Don't detectives often just get a hunch about things? Isn't there enough crap going around the world right now that would lead top security officials to say 'hmm, perhaps we will be attacked?' Maybe it's not a 'too much, too little' thing. What I was trying to convey was that no matter what these people do, they'll never be right. He's connected to Bush so you automatically deem him a moron. It's gotten ridiculous. Detectives who have a hunch about something don't bring it to the national media--instead they go out and investigate to see if their feeling is credible. Once they have evidence of a credible lead, they bring it to the DA or public or whatever. What this guy should have done was taken his feeling talked to the CIA, FBI or other countries intelligence services and see if there is a credible threat. I think we all know there's a possibility of a terrorist attack, we're not morons. The recent attacks on Glasgow and attempts on London reminded us of that--but damn gina, support your claims. You're a lawyer--would you accept a case because the police had a gut feeling about something?
  21. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 10:38 PM) In Wisconsin, people call "bags" (and generally anything with the hard A sound) "bay-gs". It's rather annoying. I asked a girl for an explanation about why they say it like that and I was told, "do you call a 'bay-gul' (the bread) a 'bag-gul'?" I proceeded to silently question whether going to Marquette was really the right decision. There's actual a name for that--it's called the "Great Northern Vowel Shift" it has to do with place of articulation for the vowel. Basically, in Northern States (and Canada) the articulation has shifted to higher in the mouth. It's a well documented linguistic phenomena and not, as many people presume, an error.
  22. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 08:13 PM) You hurted my feelings. Your a jerk. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 09:31 PM) Their, you said it. I will suspend you both. So help me, I will. Speak the President's English DAMMIT (wait, no, don't do that either).
  23. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 10, 2007 -> 08:06 PM) This has zero to do with too much or too little. Its just plain idiocy. Now, if Sylvia Browne said she had a gut feeling about us getting attacked--hunker down! Maybe she should be the new DHS head. . .
