QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 6, 2006 -> 01:00 PM) I haven't seen the film yet, but insdiers say it's a natural fit for PSH to play Capote. Both rather, uh 'eccentric' personalities. I'd buy that, but when yo usee PSH in this role it really isn't him. If that makes sense, you don't see the actor AT ALL at any point. It's really amazing. I can't describe it.

QUOTE(sox4lifeinPA @ Feb 5, 2006 -> 02:08 AM) Just saw that again tonight. It was even better the second time. The difference between this movie and Ray is that in the end Johnny Cash becomes a great person while ray stays a dickhead. Joaquin Phoenix must win best actor, Paul Giamatti should win supporting. I think that Philip Seymour Hoffman was more amazing in Capote, though. Which was also an incredible moving. It was really interesting, I had no idea that Capote was such a total amoral self-serving jerk. It was definitely a good movie and I really enjoyed watching a biography of a true American classic novel. Great movie, and like I said, PSH was absolutely mind-boggling as Capote. Really, absolutely stunning.
  6. QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Feb 4, 2006 -> 05:36 PM) How many cartoons and TV programs are out there that depict Christians in a negative light? More than I could ever read or watch in a year thats for sure and you dont see them taking to the streets burning down buildings and rioting. Well, they are a little busy protesting the funerals of dead military men. . .

*finally* went and saw Walk the Line. Really, a good film. Joaquim Pheonix was incredible. I really felt like it was Johnny Cash I was watching. Really good. Even my non-Johnny Cash liking friend enjoyed it. Tonight: Capote.

  11. QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Feb 2, 2006 -> 07:03 PM) There is no such thing as sexual orientation. So, you wouldn't describe yourself as straight?
  12. QUOTE(kevin57 @ Feb 2, 2006 -> 11:59 PM) BTW, is there any other way for a guy to be raped? Very sad to hear about such a troubled young man and the hatred that exploded into indefensible violence. Well, yes. Forced oral sex.
  13. QUOTE(Iwritecode @ Feb 2, 2006 -> 04:01 PM) There's no such thing as "a little bit illegal". Yeah, "a little bit illegal" is similar to "kind of pregnant"
  14. QUOTE(SpringfieldFan @ Feb 2, 2006 -> 03:41 PM) Kyle, are you getting the feeling we are posting to a brick wall here? SFF or preaching to the choir. . .
  15. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 1, 2006 -> 05:17 PM) So what was her argument? That the separation of church and state in the constitution implies that the U.S. and its states can't police the church, but that the churches should be treated as their own state-like entities? That a church is like a family--and that it should be handled internally because it's really no one else's business. Not a compelling argument.
  16. I feel the same way, but a Catholic friend said that she felt it should be handled by the church hierarchy. And I wondered if anyone else shared that. . .
  17. Had an interesting conversation about this today--so I wonder what you guys think? Should this stuff be handled internally by the church or outsourced to secular authorities?
  18. I didn't watch last night, but my sister called to give me the blow by blow. Now, my sister is a special ed teacher so just by virtue of the "leave all the children behind act" she is not a fan of the current admin (not to mention the environment, choice, and a plethora of other issues). So, she's telling me what's going on. She starts shadowing the president on the environmental issues, then she starts making this choking/gagging noise. I was like, Are okay? To which she replied, yes, I'm just choking on my own anger. I think that sums up my feelings pretty well.

  20. link to trib story Man Signs Voter Registration as 'God' By Associated Press Published January 30, 2006, 6:52 AM CST READING, Pa. -- One registered Republican won't be able to vote in the next election unless he appears at a Berks County Elections Board to explain the signature on his registration form. The man is registered as Paul S. Sewell, but his form is signed "God." County Solicitor Alan S. Miller said Sewell claims his "God" signature is merely a legal mark like the "X" used by people who are illiterate. Sewell, 40, said he will be happy to explain. As the owner of a bail enforcement agency, he finds fugitives, he said. "Whenever I go to arrest somebody, they say, 'Oh, God, give me another chance. Oh, God, let me go. I'll turn myself in tomorrow,'" Sewell said. He said he thinks his designated mark is legal. "PennDOT accepted it on my driver's license. I have a credit card with it," he said. "It shouldn't be a problem."

    Dominatrix gets off

Linkage Dominatrix Acquitted in Bondage Death 47 minutes ago DEDHAM, Mass. - A dominatrix was acquitted of manslaughter Monday in the death of a man who prosecutors say suffered a heart attack while strapped to a replica of a medieval rack. ADVERTISEMENT Barbara Asher, a 56-year-old woman who called herself Mistress Lauren M, was also cleared of dismemberment. Prosecutors said that 53-year-old Michael Lord suffered a heart attack in 2000 during a bondage session in a "dungeon" in Asher's condominium and that Asher did nothing to help him for five minutes for fear authorities would find out about her business. Asher had her boyfriend chop up the body of the 275-pound retired telephone company worker, and they dumped it behind a restaurant in Maine, prosecutors said. His remains have never been found. Prosecutors said Asher confessed to police, but the alleged confession was not taped, and investigators testified they did not save their notes. Asher's lawyer, Stephanie Page, said there was nothing to prove Lord was even dead — no body, no blood, no DNA. During his closing argument to the jury, prosecutor Robert Nelson put on a black leather mask with a zippered mouth opening and re-enacted the bondage session. With both hands, he reached back and clutched the top of a blackboard as if strapped to the rack. Then he hung his head as if dead. Asher's lawyer objected, and the judge agreed. "That's enough Mr. Nelson," Judge Charles Grabau said. "Thank you for your demonstration."
  23. Against. It's a flawed system, and an error made under this system is too horrible to imagine. I also don't want anyone killing in my name--even if it is after a full judicial trial. Like Rex said, I'm against murder and in my eyes if it's a gang banger pulling the trigger or the government pulling the proverbial trigger it's the same. I also really don't feel that it is implemented fairly and equally across race (white people get it less) and gender (women get it less) and socio-economic status (rich people get it less)--so we don't even seem to implement it fairly. eleni new york

Went and saw Match Point last night. A smidge on the over-long side but really a good movie. Jonathan Rhys-Myers was amazing--the script was flat occassionally, but it was really an engrossing film. I usually hate Woody Allen (I think this is the first one of his movie's I've been able to sit all the way through) but it's a smart and thought provoking movie. Worth the price of admission.
