Seems like Tazer is pressing a little bit, 0 Goals so far this year. Understandable, he's a 20 y/o captain, his coach was fired etc... Lets hope he gets it going soon. -

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Oct 19, 2008 -> 02:47 PM) Lovie is good, Babich is godawful though. Their defensive players though as a whole have regressed, especially Tillman and Vasher this year. Urlacher started regressing 2 years ago and this year, he looks very ordinary. Good thing the Bears rewarded him with a new contract. Why is Lovie a good coach? Is he good tactically... I would say no. Is he good as a motivator... I suppose, but other than that, I don't see what makes him a good coach. -

I'd like the idea more if it had originated here, but so many other teams in so many other cities have already been there and done that. It just feels insincere to me at this point, but I must say... when you have 40,50,60K people all wearing the same color it looks amazing.

Preface: I consider myself to be a Moderate, who leans conservative fiscally and liberal socially. I was against the War originally, and think we now have to finish the job. That being said I just got back from seeing "W" and I thought it was well done, outside of some of the archetypal imitations from some of the actors (Thandie newton, I'm looking at you). If Oliver Stone set out to bury president bush, which he contends that he didn't, I think he failed. The Bush in "W" is by most accounts very likable, perhaps even comparable to MacBeth as an anti-hero. Stone's version of the president seems to have good intentions, but is led astray by an Oedipus complex and poor advice from his cabinet members. I cannot attend to the accuracy of the movie, because who really knows? However, what you see in "W" seems to be a plausible theory about the motivations of a son trying to prove to everybody - and even himself - that he can be make a name for himself. The film toes a fine line as it tries to keep the story unbiased, but there are a few parts that aimed at its likely audience. Still, I think the movie was a success in my eyes. It made its commentary - like it or not - but still kept the integrity of the general theme. I'm giving it 3/4 bouncing boobies.

Firing Savvy makes Kaner Cry. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune....onal-times.html Also, did anyone else notice during the press conference that Dale Tallon is trying to mimic the Joe Maddon look?

One more point... I think we should all be encouraged by what were seeing. This team isn't just settling for their current popularity, the WANT TO WIN. They don't want to take the chance of having an unexperienced coach develop the two best talents the organization has had since Roenick and Belfour. It looks like they don't want to have a GM who has spent more years in the TV booth than in Hockey Operations running the show, which is indicative to me that they want to build a solid organizational structure to make sure they can build a quality team and sustain a quality team. Having Savvy and Dale run the show just isn't conducive to this goal (IMO). Its one thing to get people buzzing about hockey again, its another to keep there interest. You can have as many redcarpet events as you want, but what will keep their season ticket base at 15,000 is consistent trips to the playoffs. I'm more excited about these changes than I am about the home games being played television (although that was critically important too).

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Oct 17, 2008 -> 11:03 AM) It's a very odd situation on the West Side. There is no doubt the offer by the Hawks had to be pretty good to get Scotty to leave the Wings. I have said it before, but when new ownership takes over, they want their own guys running the show. Rocky hired Bowman himself, just like Quenville. I just can't imagine if Tallon is fired(which I expect to happen shortly), Bowman won't have every opportunity to take the job. See, I think that Tallon will be fired and Scotty's son Stan (who has been with the team for a long time) will get the job. This way, Scotty gets all of the power without all of the trouble. I'm sure Stan will not have much issue with letting his dad do most of the grunt work, while he is the figure head. Think of the role that Bill Parcells has with the Dolphins, Sparano is his guy... which allows Parcells to remain out of the spotlight while still running things for the most part. While Dale has made some good moves (Bell for Havlat, Matt Ellison for Sharp) his FA signings (Aucoin, Cullimore, Khabby, Lapointe) have all been pretty big busts. That being said, I feel much more comfort having Scotty Bowman running this franchise than Dale Tallon.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 02:48 PM) Sutter only played the vets though basically, and didn't bring the young guys along at all. At least Savard gave the young guys a chance to grow and put this team in a good position. If Toews didn't get injured in that mid-season stretch, we would have made the playoffs last season IMO. I'm not sure its fair to compare Sutter to Savard in that aspect. The crop of "young guys" that Sutter had was Kyle Calder, Tyler Arnason, and Mark Bell, who were all "prospects" but had nowhere near the talent of Kane or Toews. Now if you were going to take Sutter to task for choking Arnason, I would be right there with you. I dont think Savvy would have ever choked anyone, not cool.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 02:27 PM) The thing is, compared to past Chicago coaches such as Sutter and Suponen, I think Savard has actually done a pretty good job. He deserves another coaching opportunity in the NHL, and I hope he gets one. Brian Sutter brought a team to the playoffs, with a goalie tandem of Steve Passmore and Jocelyn Thibault. The defense on that team had Boris Mirnov and Alexander Karpotsev, and Mike Smith was his GM. Sutter did just fine while he was here. Alpo was an abortion and only lasted a few months, and Yawney was given a team with basically no talent. But Id agree that Savvy was better than both of them.

QUOTE (daa84 @ Oct 16, 2008 -> 02:22 PM) i know very, very little about hockey, but this was exactly my thoughts as well....if you are sticking with a coach through the offseason, i would imagine you would be willing to stick with him after a 1-3 start. i mean lets say they beat nashville in OT and they are 2-2.....is he fired? if so, then they should have gotten someone else during the offseason, and if not, is 1 OT loss really gonna determine whether a guy was fired or not? Denis Savard wasn't a good assistant coach (he was in charge of the hawks stellar power play as an assistant), let alone a good head coach. He's an amazing ambassador for the organization, and they unfortunately had to remove him from the coaching position. Savvy should've been fired during the offseason... but maybe it would have ruined the summer of goodwill the team was experiencing. JMO, but the Blackhawks are a better team today then they were yesterday.

I don't know where to find proof, but I totally called Savvy's firing before the end of last season.

QUOTE (G&T @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 09:51 AM) I saw Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Essentially it's Juno but not as funny or as entertaining. Lots of teen angst. I'm totally indifferent to it. My girlfriend liked it, but I cannot, for the life of me, understand why. Also saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Some parts are hilarious, but not the overall good movie that I was expecting. Worth seeing though. Michael Cera has the acting range of John Heder. That movie was a miserable attempt at capturing hipster lifestyle with teen drama. There was no point where I cared about any of the characters, and the story lacked any kind of cohesion. Norah has an orgasm and its recorded OMG!?!?! Take your f***ing clothes off slut! This geeky f***ing nerd gets her off by double clicking her mouse? Me thinks not. Sarah Marshall was disappointing as well... the Apatow crew act is wearing a little thin on me (Pineapple Express was pretty bad too) so I'm hoping they can show a little more depth in their next movie.

QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Oct 15, 2008 -> 03:26 PM) Has anyone seen the movie "The Invisible"? I caught about 3/4 of the movie the other night, and i thought it was pretty interesting. A kid gets attacked by some "friends" and is left for dead, but they actually think he is dead. The kid has an out of body experience and starts following around the responsible parties trying to convince them to tell people where he is. They can sense him, and one girl can actually hear him, so it makes for an interesting concept. The movie was directed by David Goyer, its pretty dark overall. That movie is f***ing miserable... the girl who attacks him, the stereotypical "misunderstood bad girl from abusive parents" has ninja like skills and a magic knife that she uses like secret agent. The concept was good, interesting, but the execution was piss poor.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 12, 2008 -> 08:28 PM) Um, didn't see that coming. It wasn't a great episode, but I thought Piven was particularly good in the last scene. I like how he took the character to a different place after Gray died. I bet Vince ends up playing Joey Ramone in that script that bob sold to Gray.

This episode churned up publicity for the new season... in that aspect - mission accomplished. You guys are right though the episode was pretty weak... and although I'm not sure it matters or not, but Trey Parker as Cartman sounded really lackluster this past week. The voice lacked any type of distinctiveness, he sounded just like Stan. Still, I think Matt and Trey are both Geniuses, can't wait for the next episode.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 04:12 PM) 56 hasn't earned it yet, but 14 has to be really, really close. He's what, #3 on our all time team home run list? I can't get Baseball-reference to load lately so I can't check but he's got to be around that. PK = 2nd all time HR list 1. Frank Thomas - 448 2. Paul Konerko - 291 3. Harold Baines - 221 RBI LIST 1.
