MAn, I am sick of LH Carlos Guillen. To think, we almost got him for Jose Valentin. -

QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 07:21 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> KW had the right idea standing pat. Terrific job letting these guys work themselves out of a "slump." ....and who was the answer? None of three guys in your sig were traded. f*** you Konerko. Why doesn't Dye get a shot in the #4 spot yet? -

It's not Pods' job to get hits. He's here to be the spark plug by getting on base and wrecking havoc. Why would we want a slower leadoff hitter who might hit better or knock in more runs? -

QUOTE(CYGarland @ Aug 21, 2006 -> 06:47 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think it might be time to platoon him with Mack I agree. Let Mack face righties and bench Pods when lefties are on the mound. -
This summer's job, only because it felt good getting a fat paycheck every week along with being able to work my high school-college night job 15-20 hours a week. Good thing the contract runs through the end of the year.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 10:11 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm taking away his two first years because he was in the rotation at ages when most serious pitching prospects are still at advanced A or AA. No one labeled him the "team ace" during his first two seasons anyways because they still had Bartolo Colon. Why should those yearly ERAs be lumped into the equation when trying to determine if he is an ace? It wasn't his role. Plus, why are we using ERA as the end-all be-all for throwing pitchers in the ace category? Could you tell me what the magic number is to qualify in the AL? Let's look at other stats. His K/9 has increased every year for the past four seasons, now above 8. His BB/9 has decreased steadily three seasons in a row to where he is finally in a good range at the low 2's (control has been his main issue). HR/9 and WHIP decreased three years in a row as well. He seems to be continually improving, and even if you don't think he is an ace, I definitely don't think he belongs in an all-overrated rotation. I'd take him over any of the "aces" of our pitching staff. So how exactly is one supposed to be labeled as an "ace?" I figure teams look at their best starter, and if they think he could be the #1 start on most MLB teams (I say, 75% or 80%) they call him their "ace." Other people only label aces based on OVERALL numbers and compare them to other pitchers in the mlb so they only guys they consider aces are Johan Santana, Pedro, Roy Halladay, and Josh Beckett You seem to want to only consider a guy an "ace" if he is labeled by his team. Someone like Mark Redman. What if Halladay and Santana are on the same team? There can only be one ace. As for CC's other stats, so what? How do improving numbers make him an ace now even though he is not at the level of Johan or Doc Halladay? I don't think he's overrated either, but I really don't hear much about him.

"This team isn't that good" Kiss my ass. This team still as the 4th best record in the MLB. I didn't expect to win this series, but I expected us to win on Friday. Detroit lost 3 in a row to Texas, and traded for Neifi Perez. I like the direction they're going, but right now I'm in a "meh" mode about ours. Let see what happens this week.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 12:54 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Sorry, but he's a legitimate ace. His peripherals continue to get better each year. Take his ERA over the past four seasons (his first two full seasons in the majors started at ages 20 and 21 mind you) and you get 3.79. To average that as a starter for four years in the AL is quite good. 3.79 is not "ace" material, and is it fair to remove everyone else's two worst years to make their numbers look better? Is redandwhite not going to post in this subject until Beckett has a good start? I'm not sure if Beckett will be facing a team he hasn't seen yet for the rest of this season.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 18, 2006 -> 09:53 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Funny how last year when we were killing everyone, our speed was one of the most important reason why we were so good. It was so important that we all voted PODS on to the All-star team. Now everyone wants to play the 3 run homer game. Hilarious to me. Speed is something you need, and helps you win the games that are 1-0, 2-0 etc. If your lead off hitter can steal bases, when he gets on, its almost an automatic double, which leads to a higher possibility of you gettting an early run for your pitching staff. Its better to be balanced that be bombers. IN the playoffs-speed wins games. Pods had a .379 OBP at the break last year. I would love to have him back in the .360's range.

So I take it you are satisfied with the salary and benefits? Or was there some kind of negotiation already?

What about Omar Vizquel?

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 09:04 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What about ERA?? Because it's more important how many runs you give up than it is baserunners you allow, last I checked. Rogers is usually a 2nd half bum though, and he didn't last very long tonight. I was responding to Dick's post about wishing some of our starters being like Rogers in the second half. Contreras got hit hard in the third inning yesterday. If Zumaya was in our pen, he would not have come in. Because it was the sixth, Rogers was bailed out by his pen and smart manager.

Second Half WHIP's (through tonight) Contreras: 1.23 Buehrle: 1.50 Garland: 1.37 Garcia: 1.33 Vazquez: 1.37 Rogers: 1.50

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 06:51 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No Polanco for what looks like 4-6 weeks, at least. Who they gonna pick up? Read that they tried hard to get Grudz from KC. Sox killer, glad he signed with the royals. Who else is out there? Neifi Perez (although he hit the Sox pretty hard this year IIRC.) : Carlos Lee is having a brutal game right now. I don't miss him HOLY s***! How much weight did Dmitri leav behind at the Bett Ford Clinic?

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 17, 2006 -> 08:27 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> There are both FA and trade options out there for a leadoff SS or OF with the likes of Rollins, Furcal, Dellucci, Matthews Jr. etc. if the Sox decide to move Pods most likely to an NL team (like the Giants who desperately need a leadoff hitter) this off-season. I know he's a better #2 hitter, but I could see the Sox going back after Omar Vizquel

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 10:27 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He is a career .500 pitcher and I've watched him this year...he sucks. Thank you for proving my point. Please explain how the 20 starts I used in my post don't compare to Brandon's two against Texas and Boston

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 10:24 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So you're saying that was a good trade? Young could be horrible and never do anything, and this trade still hurts us. All I can say is we gave up easily our best position prospect, a decent bullpen arm, and kept our best pitching prospect out of the rotation where he belongs.....all to get a overpaid loser whose 6th inning meltdowns will be the reason we miss the playoffs if we do. Now I think we'll make the playoffs, and KW is still a great GM, but this trade still will go down as the worst KW has ever made. Miss Cleo, can't you read my mind? This trade isn't over with yet. What if Vazquez pitches great in the playoffs? Or the next two years we have him? Or what if we use him to land a guy like Tejada? Here's the problem with your hypothetical situation: Duque didn't want to be in the pen: If the Sox dump him just so he can be happy, they're going to lose out a lot on that $5.5 million salary Duque is making. I defended Viz all of the second half last season but most Sox weren't having it after the Shingo slaughter, and the 3-run homer he gave up to the Cubs. Here's the rotation: Buehrle Contreras Garcia (started off like s***) Garland (started off like s***) Bmac (Miss Cleo, please tell me how he would've done, and compare it to Javy's start to the season.) Pen:Politte (no way the Sox weren't bringing him back with that cheap option) Cotts Jenks Vizcaino Thornton Logan with El Duque and salary shipped out OR a Whiny El Duque I don't see that much of an improvement in our rotation, and our bullpen actually looks worse. You guys do realize Vaz is under our control for at least the next two years (not quite sure it if a good thing or a bad thing) correct?
-
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 10:16 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well the good news about Javy is that by getting him, we kept McCarthy out of the rotation, got rid of a decent bullpen arm in Vizcaino, and gave up Chris Young, who oh by the way will be a really good everyday outfielder one day. Not like we lost that trade or anything. Anything else Miss Cleo? Did you call him hurting his wrists in Spring Training too? Vizcaino is pitching well in the NL. Duque sucks, and isn't even with the D'Backs anymore. QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 10:20 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My biggest complaint was the thing with McCarthy. Brandon McCarthy was INSTRUMENTAL in this team winning it all last year. Anyone remember his performance in Texas? In Boston? Those two starts were works of art...Javy has NEVER pitched as good as Brandon did in those two games. You clearly have never watch Vazquez before this year, or even look at his previous game logs or monthly splits. Hell, what about his start against Toronto? Where were you? Some of Javy's highlights. Month of May 2005: 46 IP, 41 H, 0BB, (YES, no walks) 39 K's, 2.15 ERA He lost a game 2-1 to the Cards despite going 9 innings, giving up 3 hits, 2 ER, and 8 K's (also no BB's) Later that month he beat Atlanta going 8 IP,3 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 11 K's In September he beat the Dodgers going 8.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's The Next start he got a ND, but his team won, going 7 IP,2 H, 1 BB, 1 HR 3 ER (all three guys scored on the one hit.) 12 K's In 2004 he shut down the Sox in his first start of the season going 8 IP, giving up 3 H and 1 BB He came back later that Arpil and shut us down again. Here are some more impressive outings: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=230409116 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=230429108 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=230605120 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=230818120 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=230828120 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=230918121 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=230923115 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=220430118 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=220515125 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=220605120 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=220915120 http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=220927120

QUOTE(zenryan @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 09:23 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> nice call Take a look a his stats coming into the game, and you make the call. This has been an embarrassing game for the Sox. Dropped flyball, ground rule double due to fan getting involved, and windmill Cora in full effect.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 09:06 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Has Hernandez been this large his entire career? No, he was sent to the minors right after spring training because he was 40 pounds overweight. Let's not forget, this chump shut us down back on opening day in 2003.

Can't help but notice Damaso Marte moved to 0-6 without recording an out.
