  1. Anyone think he's in KW's sights? I know his no trade clause was limited, does anyone know if the Sox were on his no trade list? I think he could be had pretty cheap, with San Diego as unhappy with him as they are... I personally think if the Sox don't give up a stud prospect he would be a good fit to split 1B/DH with Pauly. Again this is all speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear about a deal for him, and am curious what everyone's thoughts would be.
  2. At least the doctor is hopeful, although there's no telling how truthful that statement is, I suppose.
  3. Look, the fact is Frank at his worst this year, was better than Carl's average play this year. If Carl were tp play like he did 5 years ago, he'd be a good DH. However a .250 average and .750 OPS are pathetic from one of the "strong" bats in the lineup. Carl can't take pitches and he's not a "clutch" player, so the Sox need a better DH.
  4. In the games he played, Frank was the most valuable bat on the team, period. Take a look at MLVr, which is a Baseball Prospectus stat that means, basically, the number of runs contributed above what the league average player would contribute, per game: Derrek Lee (for comparison, as the league leader in the category): .682 runs per game Frank Thomas (White Sox team leader): .119 runs per game Jermaine Dye: .093 Paul Konerko: .089 Carl Everett: -.034 That means that, per game, Everett was worse than the league average player, while Frank was much better.
  5. That's ignorant. He has been more productive in terms of cumulative stats, sure, but he's also played in 46 more games than Frank. As far as overall, per game production, Frank has been the far superior player.
  6. I hope KW has no interest. Sweeney is the most brittle player in the MLB this side of Kerry Wood. I'd rather get Nevin, Huff or any other number of 1B/DHs.
  7. That's true, but since there are some better hitters on the block, the Rangers might take less for him, expecially with Adrian Gonzalez waiting in the wings.

  9. I still have a poster on my wall from the mid-90's of Frank and Robin, both in mid-swing, blown up in front of the Sears Tower. It kicks ass. I sincerely hope Frank is able to make it back, because I'd hate for him to go out like this.
  10. I'm surprised his name hasn't come up in relation to the Sox yet. Baseball Prospectus says there have been several teams asking after him, and the Rangers may be willing to deal due to their stockpile of hitters and desperate need for pitchers. I think he could step into the DH role nicely for the Sox. Even if his homers were to drop a little bit moving from Arlington, he's been a walk machine this year and has some speed. Plus he's always been considered what KW would call a "grinder." I would certainly be willing to trade a couple mid-level prospects for him.
  11. I hope he would feel as if he contributed, because he certainly did, there's no denying that. The Sox averaged nearly a run better per game when he was in the lineup, and extended their division lead eight games after he returned.
  12. That is perhaps exaggerating, but it will be much more difficult to advance in the playoffs without: a) Acquiring a middle of the order bat. or B) Carl Everett playing like Carl Everett circa 2000, Jermaine Dye playing like the Jermaine Dye of the last two months (aka .900+ OPS) for the rest of the season, or some equally unlikely development.
  13. Assuming his home run pace went down somewhat, and his batting average went up somewhat, as was likely to happen, that keeps his OPS in the mid .900 range, or 100 points better than Pauly and 200 points better than Everett. Also, according to Baseball Prospectus Frank was the most valuable White Sox hitter on a per game basis this season, even with his sagging batting average (which is an overrated stat, to be sure).
  14. Some of the stuff in that Hall of Fame article was ridiculous. Joe Mauer was one of the predictions...he who has not yet played a full major league season, and hasn't been all that productive during the time when he's been healthy. Also Mark Prior and other young pitchers were predicted, but no Mark Buehrle, who just reached 80 wins...
  15. Even hitting .220 Frank is still a more valuable hitter than anyone else the Sox have. A hell of a lot better than Everett or Gload, for sure.
  16. Frank is my favorite player of all time and it is disappointing he has been so injury-plagued the last couple of years. Hopefully the ankle gets the rest it needs and he comes back at full strength next year...in a Sox uniform! As for Manny or Dunn, I would give up whatever the Red Sox/Reds want for either of them because they are both outstanding players. Manny is Frank Thomas pt. 2 with the bat and while Dunn has a low batting average (the thing that soured Cincy on him) his batting eye and peripheral numbers more than make up for it. The Sox need a slugger bad, and I would not be mad to see KW overpay for either of these two.
  17. Basically anyone signed for more than the rest of the year at a high salary will make it through. BTW, this is somewhat tangential, but did anyone hear Steve Phillips try to explain the waiver process to some 10 year old kid during the Sox/Royals game on ESPN the other day? Hilariously bad...no wonder the Mets canned his ass.
  18. Ok I'm sorry you are completely correct in all regards and I'm retarded. All I was saying was Turnbow would be a nice pick-up (I even admitted it was day dreaming). I think the trade deadline gets people too worked up sometimes.
  19. That was just idle daydreaming, not necessarily a serious suggestion. But if they were to get rid of a relatively expensive, arbitration eligible player like Overbay in the process and get back another young arm like Bajenaru they might think about a trade. I'm not saying they're willing to trade him, but if they were willing to listen to offers KW should consider it, that's all.
  20. I don't know if anyone has mentioned this in any of the numerous Overbay threads, but I'd be more than willing to go for this deal if the Sox could get Derrick Turnbow as part of it. He'd be a fantastic bullpen addition, almost to the same degree as Wagner, especially since Turnbow is younger and, in all likelyhood, more easily re-signeable.
  21. The Sox have still won 5 of the last 7...including a four game sweep in Cleveland...calm down.
  22. I was browsing Sox stats, and I didn't realize until now how truly horrible Juan has been so far this year at the plate. He's ranks last in the AL in OPS, and ahead of only Jack Wilson in the NL among players with more than 200 PA. At this point Ozuna would be a better everyday player, but that's not going to happen because Uribe is an Ozzie favorite (Uribe is also somewhat better defensively, I believe). I really hope that KW can get Vizquel or another shorstop, so Uribe can go back to the utility role he excelled at last year.
  23. "Hernandez changes mind day after surgery remarks" http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2113602
  24. I believe he's pissed off the Nationals just released Wil Cordero, who was his best friend on the team, and so he's threatening them. I kind of doubt he'll sit out the rest of the season, but that's just me. Perhaps a trade to Ozzie and El Duque would brighten his attitude...
  25. Does someone with Insider want to summarize what Olney wrote in his article about the top 10 teams looking to deal, specifically in regards to the Sox?
