QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 04:16 AM) 1 entry found for their. their ( P ) Pronunciation Key (thâr) 1 entries found for there. there ( P ) Pronunciation Key (thâr) that looks to me like they sound the same? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That would be a great response if that is what I stated or if that was my question. I never questioned what the dictionary stated. I stated that it is pronounced and said differently. I have never heard anyone pronounce those two words the same way.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 03:41 AM) I have no interest in correcting grammar mistakes, so no, thank you. I don't agree that their/there is much different than other mistakes. It's a spelling error, just like "definately". (After all, the writer clearly understood each meaning.) Reading a sentence that throws together verb tenses in the wrong way is more jarring to me. Btw, it's not true that the two words have different sounds. At least, it's not generally true (you might pronounce them differently) -- most dictionaries list identical accepted pronunciations. Just saying. (That is a fragment, for which I apologize profusely.) If this issue gets raised every time the two words are switched it's going to get real old, real fast. Now back to FullHouseTalk... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So you are stating that when you pronounce the word there it sounds exactly the same as the word their? I find that hard to believe and that is what I was stating. I think you knew that and I think you know that the two words sound different when you say them. I also find it difficult to view their/there as a typo or a spelling error. They are 2 completely different words. There is not a word that is spelled definately. Now that would be a spelling error or typo. Spelling their when you mean there on a consistent basis is not the same. JMO. Sorry about that grammar class falling through. I was looking forward to it.

QUOTE(Tmar28 @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 03:10 AM) how do you not know which there to use? when the sentence is forming in your head, it should automatically go to the correct one. i have no clue how the wrong one gets used. just my opinion though. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That is exactly my point. How does this happen? Thank you Tmar!

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 03:04 AM) There're more. Unless you're quite certain that your grammar is perfect, you should lay off a bit, imho. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Feel free to throw a grammar class my way. I don't take criticism the wrong way. Please edit my posts and let me know what is wrong with them. I would greatly appreciate the criticism. If you want you can send me a personal message and we can go over them together. Thank you for your help. Your opinion is greatly appreciated, however I think there is a huge difference between that mistake and not knowing the difference between their and there. Typos are understandable. Not knowing the difference between there and their while claiming to be in an advanced English class is not. That is IMHO.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 03:00 AM) He definitely would not. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Good catch again.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Apr 13, 2005 -> 02:43 AM) Where's the f***in' comma after "First of all"? Your grammar sucks!!! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I am sorry for missing that comma. You are exactly correct Sleepy, my grammar sucked bad in that instance. However, there is a big difference between forgetting a comma and trying to pass off THEIR as THERE. Not only that, but claiming to be in advanced English as well? I highly doubt any student in a high school advanced English class would make that mistake. If this is the case, then I really feel sorry for the rest of the kids going to that high school. I can't imagine what they are learning in the regular English classes.

QUOTE(T R U @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 11:58 PM) I believe you mean Now who is... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes I did. Thank you for pointing that typo out. Good job T R U.

QUOTE(Tannerfan @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 11:55 PM) That's what I'm talkin' about. The only reason I started this topic was to point out that some pitchers get more credit than others, and I was trying to think of a way to rectify this point. I think Shingo is great, but his last two saves should be shared with Hermanson and Marte. Forget holds, nobody talks about those. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Agents talk about holds during contract negotiations. You can bet your bottom dollar on that. My preference is just to ignore the statistics you find meaningless and to move on from there. If the saves irk you or holds irk you then don't pay attention to them. Someone brought up a good point that 40 some saves made both Koch and Mesa a ton of money. However, others look at more meaningful statistics, such as K's to walk ratio, inherited baserunners allowed to score, WHIP, and ERA to judge a relief pitcher. Just ignore the statistics that bother you in anyway and look at the others to base your opinion off of. Everyone has their own opinion on how to look at statistics and that is why there are so many different types and different ways to build a team.

QUOTE(T R U @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 11:53 PM) dude, you screwed that up ima? its im sofa king im so f***ing, not ima so f***ing <{POST_SNAPBACK}> No who is the English and grammar master?

QUOTE(T R U @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 11:46 PM) this is a dam sox massage board.. not a profesional place of buisness... mistakes happen.. why dont you just let it go its not even a big deal.. god dam <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It isn't a big deal. But why argue it? Say nothing or say, oops I made a mistake. Don't get all defensive and embarrassed and then try to make it look good. Don't make it ok to write and speak like a dumb ass. Learn from a mistake and move on.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 11:44 PM) actually i was in advanced English in highschool so im pretty sure my use of english is fine in school...Go look at every message board.... and tell me their arent errors in 1 out of every 3 posts....Here is a thought, people arent worried about typing right on a sports message board. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> WOW! You have proven my point. What a very scary thought indeed. Someone that does not know the difference between their and there is not only passing by, but in ADVANCED English in high school! What does that say for the rest of the kids? When the advanced students don't know the difference between their and there what the hell do the regular students know and learn? Here is a thought: I highly doubt that you typed their wrong twice on accident instead of there. First of all the words don't even sound the same when you are speaking them. An advanced English high school student would definately not make such a mistake.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 11:40 PM) The only sad thing is worrying about grammar when we are talking casually about sports... school and job interviews are totally different than having a discussion about sports over the internet. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I truly doubt that it is any different to you at all. I am sure you didn't know the difference while talking sports or while preparing for school or a job interview. It would all be the same to you regardless of the situation.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 11:39 PM) when did soxtalk become English class? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> When did kids become so stupid that they don't even know the difference between their and there? Something is very wrong with our school system when kids are passing by without even knowing the basics. It is very scary indeed.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 11:13 PM) You just dissed like half the site, including the chief administrator. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It is truly sad if that is the case. It is even more sad that these kids would be proud of the grammar mistakes and instead chose to flip me off instead of caring that they look like dumb asses when they write and speak. Good luck in school and in job interviews with an attitude like that.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 10:23 PM) i just think their shouldnt be a save... although i guess maybe it could be changed if their was a runner in scoring position... Not if its just 1 out or if only a guy on 1B. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> THERE should really be more help for kids with THEIR English today. You must learn how to use their and there. 2 different meanings to 2 totally different words. Please learn the difference.

QUOTE(Tannerfan @ Apr 12, 2005 -> 10:35 PM) No. There are rules for wins already in place. That's why there is a difference between a win and a save. All I'm suggesting is that both Marte and Hermanson deserve some of the credit for getting two guys out in the 9th inning. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> So what is your point? There are rules for saves already in place as well. You want to change those rules so someone else sarcastically suggested that we change the rules for wins. This is a bunch of nonsense.

QUOTE(Fotop @ Mar 30, 2005 -> 08:58 PM) Anyone read up on this guy at all or have seen him play? Chris Mortenson on ESPN wrote a rather long article about this guy, and it was damn impressive. The kid is 6'6" and ran a 4.37 (hand-timed)/4.40 (electronically-timed), as well as having a 39.5 in vertical jump. He played QB for Arkansas, but doesn't project as one because of his unorthodox style and an old shoulder injury. But what I'm thinking is he'd be one heck of a receiver...something out of the Randel El mold. He's taller and faster than Mike Williams, granted he hasn't played nearly enough reciever as Williams has but potentially he could be a huge matchup problem. So here's what I'm thinking, with all of this talk of the Niners trading down and the chargers grabbing edwards before us...why not take the best player available at the #4 (probably a RB) and grab this Jones kid with the 2nd round pick? Maybe 2nd rd is a reach, but he's got all of the tools of the top guys. Maybe I'm jumping off a cliff for this guy, but mark him down as one of my favorites in the draft. I think taking a long look at this guy is warranted, especially if the Bears grab a third round pick in a trade. I've linked the article I read below if you're interested. Matt Jones <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I heard a while ago that most scouts and teams are looking at him as a TE, not a WR.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Apr 2, 2005 -> 05:48 AM) I just a got back from Miller park after a 2 hour drive in the rain. My throat hurts like a b**** after 3 straight hours of cheering and heckeling. If you would like to see me in action just pop in your tape of todays game and look and listen for the crazy dude behind home plate about 20 rows up. Now finally Wes Helms knows that he's fat, southern and bad. I single handedly made Arrow have a good ass day with my constant screaming, I encouraged him to be great. Miller park is still beautiful even after the 6th time I've been there. Brewer fans now hate me. The Pauly chant in the 9th was badass. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I don't know how anyone else on this board feels, but I just have to let my personal feelings about this kind of crap known. First I would love to know why you find heckling fun? You ruin the game for everyone else that is trying to actually watch the game. Nothing you could possibly say can ever be original or even the least bit funny. People like you should just learn to sit back and relax and enjoy the game. If I ever heard you on tape I would be so f***ing annoyed I would have to turn the volume off. I absolutely hate moronic pieces of s*** that act like you described and wish that security would have the decency to through you f***heads out. Cheering is one thing, but hecklers are absolute assholes. To find pride or pleasure in making other fans hate you is retarded and ridiculous. To think you actually have any kind of impression on Aaron Rowand one way or another on how good he will be is obscene. At this moment I am embarressed for you and can not stand that you are a White Sox fan and that you represented our fan base the way you did.

QUOTE(silver and black @ Mar 26, 2005 -> 05:06 AM) does chisoxfan14 ring a bell? she uses !!! alot... even i read this thread and said that is total bs... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You spell "a lot" incorrectly a lot. Does that make you total bs or a troll? I am going with SS2K4 on this one and saying this person was a troll, but definately not because the person used an inordinate amount of exclamation points.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 17, 2005 -> 09:46 PM) He didn't say "illegal according to MLB's rules" and steroids certainly have been illegal outside of baseball ever since he's been playing. In fact, I believe that steroid use has technically been illegal in MLB as well. MLB was simply not allowed to test for it under the terms of the CBA. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> From my understanding steroids are NOT illegal to TAKE or to have, however it IS illegal to sell or traffic steroids without the proper credentials to do so. Someone else here is also correct. In Mexico steroids can be bought at the local drug store like aspirin, so I am sure it is very legal in the Dominican Republic.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Mar 11, 2005 -> 08:36 PM) Sure, but when I say that Lebron James and Dwyane Wade are absolute studs and in my Top 10 NBA players list, could you claim that it's an inaccurate thing to say since they've only been in the NBA for 1 1/2 seasons? Certain players just come along and break the mold. And Chad Pennington....I'd have to reiterate once again (third time in this thread) that he has a career rating of 94 going into his 4th season. What is it about Chad that doesn't merit a spot in a Top 10 QB list? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It is very hard to compare sports. I can see where you are coming from and you are trying to make a good comparison, but I just don't think it is the same. The entire NBA is a huge youth movement. The NFL still has consistent players that have proven they can do it year after year. I can't think of that many players in the NBA that have proven they can do it year after year on a consistent basis. Maybe Shaq, Garnett, Kobe, Iverson, Ray Allen? Its just not the same, nor a fair comparison, although I can see where you are coming from.

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Mar 11, 2005 -> 04:33 PM) By the time 2005 comes to a close in the case of the young guys like Palmer, Carr, Roethlisberger, Brees, etc. I'm not rating guys going into 2005. Pennington's career QB rating is 94. Michael Vick? .700 career winning percentage with not much of a supporting cast? Easily the best rushing QB in NFL history? Led his team to the NFC Championship game with a below average to average OL, not a single pro bowl caliber receiver, an average defense at best, and a rookie coach? You wanna see an absolute nightmare of season? Put Favre in Atlanta. It's the difference between going 6-10 and going to the NFC Championship game. Yeah, you're right. 36 year old Favre owns him, or pwns him, or whatever. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I would be willing to bet that at the end of 2005 Kerry Collins has better numbers than Brett Favre. With that surrounding cast how could he not? Randy Moss, Jerry Porter, Doug Gabriel, Ronald Curry, LaMont Jordan and a pretty good offensive line will lead to a damn good year for Collins. I could see many QBs putting up better numbers than Favre at the end of 2005, but I thought we were ranking them as of right now and what we know of the QBs as of right now. Favre just has more history and has proven much more to be put below QBs such as Vick, Pennington, Brees, Palmer, Leftwitch, and Carr. However, this is just my opinion. Everone has their own way of ranking players.
-
QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Mar 11, 2005 -> 06:18 AM) Just based on what I've seen, throwing the numbers completely out the window and guessing how my Top 10 QBs will be ranked once the 2005 season comes to a close: 1. Peyton Manning 2. Donovan McNabb 3. Michael Vick 4. Tom Brady 5. Daunte Culpepper 6-10 in no particular order Drew Brees Chad Pennington Ben Roethlisberger David Carr Carson Palmer Palmer tore s*** up in his last 6 games with a 100+ rating. Carr kinda faded down the stretch, but he's just too damn good not to put up an 85 to 90 rating in what will be his 4th season. Pennington has a career rating of 94, so he could be the most underrated QB in the league because you rarely ever hear him mentioned when people (other than NY Jets fans) talk about elite QBs. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I like yuor list, but as I said they are all relatively young. Brett Favre has done this over a long period of time. These other QBs you have listed, especially 6-10, have done it for only 1 or 2 years. Micheal Vick is definately not consistent in what he does and has been injured often and he is in your top 5. It is hard to put those young QBs ahead of Favre when they have not done it and proven themselves over a longer period of time such as Favre has. Again, this is just showing that the NFL is in a great deal of turnover at the QB position. This does not by any means prove how great Favre is by todays standards.
-
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Mar 11, 2005 -> 03:25 AM) I'd say he's right on the border of the top 10 QB's, could go either way. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If he is top 10 it is only because the majority of the starting QBs in the NFL are relatively young and you can't say they are better than him quite yet. There also seems to be very bad QB play in the NFL, which is why Favre would be in the top 10. To say he is still a top 10 or top 5 QB is not a statement that I would make in order to prove that Favre is still a good QB. He is not half the QB that he once was. That is the same reason that a team is willing to pay Warner 4 million a year to be a starter for their team and why Trent Dilfer and Drew Bledsoe are still starters in the NFL. There just isn't much out there. I would say AT LEAST a third of the league will have a starting QB entering their 4th season or less as an NFL starter. That is a pretty damn young league. That is why Favre is still in the top ten or even top 5. Manning, Brady, Culpepper, McNabb, Favre? All of the following QBs have less then 4 years of starting QB experience entering this year. There may be even more than this. This makes is very hard to tell if they are as good or better than Favre at the present time. Chad Pennington Rex Grossman Michael Vick Drew Brees Ben Rothlisberger Eli Manning Joey Harrington Carson Palmer Byron Leftwich J. P. Losman David Carr San Fran QB - Rookie or Rattay
