QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 04:09 PM) Where is this word??? Did you watch the unbelieveable pitching performance of the staff in 2003??? They didnt get a ring because of their offense. I'm just going by the explanation given by "experts" as to why there was a lack of interest in IRod the last two times he hit free agency. They used this as the reason that nobody was biting on his contract demands. The accusations included calling mostly fastballs with runners on to increase his chances of throwing runners out, along with not studying game film. I obviously am not in the inside here and I am not sure of the validity of this argument. I just heard it repeatedly during his time on the market. I'm sure others here remember it.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) One K doesn't make I-Rod suck. I-Rod is better than AJ, period. He hits for a much higher AVG and he is a much better defensive catcher. His arm makes AJ's look like a 10 year old's. AJ gets to hit at the Cell while I-Rod has to hit at the cavernous Comerica. I-Rod would probably have 10+ homers if he played for us. I like AJ and he is light years better than Olivo but I-Rod is better. Just think about how much of an Ozzie-type player I-Rod is. He can hit, run (even steal a few bases), and play great defense. I know it's fun being a homer but come on... I basically agree with you, except the word around the league has been that I-Rod calls a horrible game and doesn't handle pitchers very well. And if that is indeed the case, I'd prefer to have AJ based on how he's handled our staff. That doesn't make him the better player, just the better fit for the Sox.

Well, not sure what games Monroe was watching, but Alan Trammel gave us some mad props after todays game. From MLB.com...

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 01:57 AM) game threads would be great if actual discussion took place there. the constant "dye flies out. 2 outs" and the like are useless. about 8 percent of it is good. I'm not even complaining about that. That's play-by-play and helps those who can't see the game. My problem is with posts like "Dye flies out, we totally suck today, f*** Dye, etc". I'm guilty of some of this stuff too. Thats why I've tried to stay out of there while the game is taking place. The emotions of the game sometimes override rational thought.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 01:44 AM) I have learned in the last few weeks just to sit on the recliner, or go over to the GF's house to watch the game, then come on. The gamethreads are just to dumb to even waste my time in. I do however love looking back on the line up of people ready to jump of the ledge when Mark gives up a basehit, or anyone on the team grounds out. This is an amazing site, but the one thing I try and stay away from is the game threads (even though I end up there on occassion). Little sense is ever made there and the overly dramatic mood swings are maddening. I'm not criticizing anybody...its a good place to vent frustrations, but it'll drive you nuts if you are looking for rational well thought analyzation.

QUOTE(Antonio Osuna @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 01:42 AM) I disagree, for this reason. Schilling/Clement and, to a lesser extent, Colon, are essentially power pitchers, whereas Mark is a finesse guy. Power or finesse, I'm not sure how Matt Clement and Bartolo Colon are more reliable than Buehrle. They've both been pretty inconsistant throughout their careers, and don't be surprised if Clement fades away in the second half, as he has the past few seasons. I'll give you Schilling, but I'd feel pretty confident with Buehrle against the other two.

QUOTE(AirScott @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 01:36 AM) are you saying that Jesus Christ can't hit a curve ball? "Hey bartender! Jobu needs a refill!"

"Ah, Jesus. I like him very much. But he no help hit curve ball."

Time to revisit this gem from Mr. Dimitri Young from earlier this year: "Forget the other teams, it's going to come down to us and Cleveland. No disrespect to the Twins and White Sox, I just feel that club, the doggone Indians, is going to be the thorn in our side."

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 02:15 PM) The early asking price is always rediculus. I wouldnt read too much for it. Its like selling a car. How much do you want for that car. I want 11 million dollars. You laugh for a second and tell them no thanks. A month later you get a call, Hi remember I was selling a car. Yeah it was overpriced. Well its now less. Thats what I was thinking. The only way he stays at this asking price is if the Giants have little intention of trading him. I doubt anybody will jump on their current asking price. Giving up a 2 and 3 starter for a guy like Schmidt basically negates the reason to make a deal for him.

Although I was thinking about sending assassins after Ozzie every inning he sent Viz and Shingo out there, I have to admit that it looks like pure genious now. Maybe even more importantly than the win was how big Viz and Shingo were in pressure situations. These guys, like 'em or not, are in our bullpen, and using them in only mop up duty is a waste of roster spots. It took a lot of guts for Ozzie to put them in there tonight, and the boost to their confidence could play huge dividends later on. Or they could go back to sucking.

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 08:36 PM) lol come on!!! fellas, we make overtures about the postseason and having this wrapped up in about half the posts on here. i'm just getting straight to it. sept. 6. book it. I'm pretty confident we'll win the division. But, if we somehow blow this and don't make it to the playoffs (which isn't, you know, completely out of the realm of possibility), do you really want to be known as the guy who jinxed the 2005 White Sox? Do you really want to be the next Steve Bartman?

Quick. Throw some salt over your right shoulder. "Kick his ass, Seabass!"

QUOTE(jerseysox @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 08:05 PM) you can't be letting d.j. carrasco beat you when you have brad radke starting. a horrendous loss. they really do suck. with the indians losing, today's game is a freebie for the sox. It would sure be nice if we win tonight. If we do, we can officially erase whatever ground that was lost from the Cubs series.

Big win for the Royals. This may be their year.

And we head to the 9th. Still 3- 1. Lets hold 'em Royals!

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 03:53 PM) Would an Anderson/Marte/Tracey package get the deal done for Schmidt? I actually think thats a good trade for both teams, although the Giants seem to be more interested in adding Major League help. Not sure if Anderson and Tracey qualify as MAJOR league help quite yet. For me personally, I'm a bit iffy on trading Marte. I realize he isn't as consistant as he used to be, but he's still a quality lefty in the bullpen. I think KW would only trade him if he had a plan to replace him in a seperate trade. -

QUOTE(VAfan @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 03:34 PM) I've advocated a trade for Schmidt and Vizquel with the Sox giving up Contreras, Uribe, Anderson, Gload, and a lower prospect (or their choice of Takatsu/Vizcaino). (The Giants might take this because they want major league ready guys.) That wouldn't cost us more than a couple million more than we are paying Contreras/Uribe, but would be a definite improvement in our postseason chances. Vizquel is a .357 OBP guy. Uribe is at .276. That's like having a .300 hitter v. a .220 hitter in the lineup. The .357 guy makes a lot fewer outs. Given our offense, that would help a lot at the bottom of the order. Plus Vizquel is a switch hitter for a lineup bereft of lefties, has more speed than Uribe, and is basically his equal defensively. Both are signed for 3 years. I'm willing to give up Anderson, Gload, and a bullpen pitcher to make the deal, because none of those guys are going to make a major impact this year or next. (I can't see us going into 2006 with Ross Gload as our starting 1B.) The only thing that I'd argue with you here is trading Contreras. First off, that'll still leave us with a hole at the 5 spot (unless you think we can count on El Duque being healthy and McCarthy being ready). Also, why would the Giants want to take on Contreras's huge contract? For some reason, I think if we were to pull off a trade for Schmidt, Damaso Marte would be included somewhere in there. -
Being that he's our guy, I hope Buehrle starts. I think it would be a good thing mostly because it would be a large step towards Mark getting the national attention that he should be getting. But Halladay is just as deserving. I won't complain either way.

Make that 11-8. If you don't know by now, the Royals are pretty bad.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 05:11 PM) Regarding AJ Burnett's durability issues: Sorry, missed that post. I'm not saying that I wouldn't love him on our staff, especially considering that we don't need him to be an ace out there. Just saying that we should proceed with caution. And by that I mean not giving up too much for a guy who's only a year removed from a major surgery on his throwing arm. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 05:01 PM) Burnett was injured in '03 but had Tommy John's Surgery early in the season. He came back after the All-Star break of '04 and has been pretty healthy since. The TJ Surgery seems to have strengthened his elbow and his arm problems are all but gone. He's not even close to as injury prone as Wood. Well that makes me feel better. He's got a hell of an arm, and if his injuries have subsided like you said, I'd take a long look at him if the price is right. But I'd still be concerned. The guy has never started 30 games in a season. A.J. Burnett - Stats He's never won over 12 games either. Not sure if his injuries are comparable to Wood's, but his career stats are. -
I don't think we should worry too much about Buehrle bolting for St. Louis. Remember, he said all that stuff about wanting to play there the two previous years before he signed his current contract. And if I remember correctly, there was a good chance that St. Louis would have given him more money if he had waited for free agency. There's little doubt that he'd love to play for the Cardinals, but I also get the feeling that he's pretty comfortable here. As long as we give him a fair contract, I'm sure Mark will be here for years to come.
