QUOTE (WCSox @ May 28, 2008 -> 02:35 PM) I would hope that his age and salary demands would factor into that decision as well. But if Cabrera acting like a b*tch is all it takes, so be it. When you say not pursued, you mean the White Sox aren't going to pursue him or other clubs are backing off him?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 26, 2008 -> 11:56 AM) Sorry but that might be the most ridiculous thing I've seen posted in here in quite some time. Will you ban all other products and companies that do not have a tribute to Memorial Day in some way? I drove by our movie theater today and saw no flag....won't be going there ever again. The homeless shelter down the block didn't have a flag in front. Guess I'll be volunteering at a different one now. ESPN.com didn't commemorate the holiday on their main page. Deleted them as a bookmark. In fact, I see nothing on the Soxtalk main page. Guess I'll stop visiting here too and you probably will too. I'm pretty sure we had a Memorial Day Thread though In fact, in the early days of SoxNet/Soxtalk, we actually closed our site in honor of 9/11 and had links to Red Cross sites. No one can ever not call Soxtalk unpatriotic That said, I think nothing of the sort with google not putting something up.

QUOTE (mr_genius @ May 22, 2008 -> 12:50 PM) 100 mpg would be big The problem with the 2nd generation Prius is that 100MPG hype is just that. I've read numerous articles that the 100MPG ratings are based on an outdated rating system and the reality is your talking about a 46-60 MPG automobile. Again, that is great mileage, but it isn't a significant improvement over the first generation. The better idea is to start getting these rolled out in all the product lines to the point that the companies can reach economy of scale which lowers the payback period of these vehicles (as a lot of hybrids still aren't wise fiscal purchases for those that don't plan on keeping a car for 5 or 6 years). In addition, I don't want a f***ing Prius, so if I have the option to get that sort of milegae in a car I like, good. GM does this with the Hybrid Tahoe, but again, it is so much more than the standard one. I think Hybrid will be the gap until we develop good battery power and at that point, we won't need filling stations or anything (we'll have batteries which can power a vehicle for hundreds of miles at a time and take very little time to recharge). Again, this is a bit into the future, but a lot of the capabilities are there.

Marte was a highly touted prospect, but that doesn't mean he's going to pan out. Offensively and defensively he's been very disappointing to say the least. I even noticed him making a dumb attempt yesterday at Alexi Ramirez bunt (which went foul, but he was going at it as if he was going to make this ridiculous play trying to field it before it went foul and he'd have had no chance). -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 28, 2008 -> 11:30 AM) Has anyone called out Eric Wedge for running a Sunday line up out there with a chance to win the series against the team in first place? They have exactly one guy in the line up hitting over .260 right now. Oops make that two. Part of that is because there offense is as futile as the Sox offense. And remember, that lineup has put up a decent amount of runs already. -

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 28, 2008 -> 09:26 AM) We need some hits here to keep the rally going, not just a sac fly or groundout RBI. To be honest, given the production we've gotten in situations like this, I'd be quite pleased if we got a Sac fly and than another Sac fly (than if things would really go well, maybe a two out hit to follow). I'm just never confident in us scoring runs till they actually touch the plate (even in this kind of situation). COME ON SOX!!! -

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 28, 2008 -> 09:25 AM) Hall and Ramirez look like different players from early April. Hall has really shortened things up, so has Alexi. That said, Alexi still has a very very long swing, but the good thing is he also has very quick hands. -

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 28, 2008 -> 09:16 AM) OC is not a the player he was advertised to be. Result was nice but effort was terrible. Westbrook looks to be tiring. I don't think he's been as bad as Sox fans think, but he's definately not been even close to the type of player he was in Anaheim. I still think we'll get a lot of good out of Orlando though. He's pressing a bit, but offensively he looks a lot better and defensively he's still been good, just not as good as Juan was (but I've long said Uribe may just be the best defensive SS in all of baseball). -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 28, 2008 -> 09:15 AM) One potential other way to do it would be to DFA Pablo and consider Uribe to be your super-sub/backup 3rd basemen when he comes back. I still Uribe has value since he can sub at 3B, SS, & 2B and play tremendous defense at all three positions. Plus, I think at some point this season the Sox could probably move Juan to a team (not really for anything, but at least they would get someone to pay the contract) needing some defensive assistant up the middle. That said, when Juan comes up he can just replace the spot Alexi had on the bench (its not like Pablo has to be released either, unless the Sox plan on bringing someone else up and I don't see who down in AAA is worthy of coming up; the only exception would be Fields and he isn't coming up until Konerko goes on the DL). -

QUOTE (Reddy @ May 28, 2008 -> 09:13 AM) oc can't bunt... He looked horrendous trying to bunt last week. IF he can't get a bunt down here and keeps stabbing at it (which is what he does last week), Ozzie may just put him out to the pasture, LOL. -

QUOTE (Reddy @ May 28, 2008 -> 09:13 AM) joe joe single off the outfield wall, followed by an up the middle shot for alexei Sweet, thanks. I think Uribe has lost his job for the time being. Ramirez still has some major holes, but he seems to be doing a lot more than Juan was. Plus, Ramirez has the upside to get better. -

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ May 28, 2008 -> 10:02 AM) Speaking of minor league system... what is going on with that thread that was closed from Bureau. I found that whole situation very interesting and haven't seen any info since. If it can't be talked about here...can someone PM what's going on. Take a look at the White Sox catch all thread. I discussed why it was removed in there (I think I made the post on Sat/Sun). -

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ May 28, 2008 -> 09:57 AM) The worst thing about our pathetic lineup is our pathetic minor league system that has one player who could be considered major league ready. Josh Fields Lance Broadway I'd say two. -

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 28, 2008 -> 09:53 AM) He has done nothing for a month. He could be returning healthy in a few weeks instead he will be out until the All-Star break. That is really bad mangement of personnel. Also Hawk on Monday was chirping about how good of a clubhouse guy Cabrera is. He mustr eally think fans are dumb. Ya, but that was prior to him getting his shot. I think the Sox want to see how he is now that he's had a couple days off and the cortisone. They'll give him a week or so and at that point, if he still looks way off I think they'll consider DL'ing him. I also know that Paulie is the type of guy that utterly refuses to sit out games (he hates not playing). Usually that attitude is a good thing, but in this case it may be detrimental and hopefully Paulie and Ozzie realize this soon and are able to get him on the DL until he's healthy and at that point we'll just have to hope the Sox can win without him (in all honesty, they've already done that this year) and when he comes back in 30 or 60 days, you look at it as you just traded for an all star first baseman (because if he's healthy, he'll be pretty close to that, imo). -

I'm thinking the Sox are going to put PK through the tests this week and if he doesn't come out, they'll DL him. -
It should be pointed out that Hatteberg did a very good job in 06 & 07 (rock solid numbers, average wise, obp wise, & ops wise). This season he has been worse than anyone on the White Sox offensively though. I don't know if it is injury related or if he's just finished. A good scout who has followed him and can break down the footage should be able to identify that. If he's not swinging any different than the previous years and its more just him being hampered, I wouldn't be opposed to it. However, I suspect his decline has more to do with diminished skills. He's hitting .173 in 34 games.

QUOTE (29andPoplar @ May 28, 2008 -> 08:48 AM) Just a few comments on this topic, first on Hatteberg. There have been criticisms of Thome here regarding bat speed and age. Hatteberg is in the same boat, he's pushing 39 and there's a reason he can't crack a very mediocre Cincinnati lineup playing for a manager who loves veterans. Even if they do end up DL'ing Konerko, they've got Swisher and there are two guys at least who can play 1B in an emergency, those being Dye and Ozuna. That's why you see DeWayne Wise up here now as a fill in ... he adds speed and defensive flexibility. Hatteberg is much more one dimensional. As for Brad Eldred, if strikeouts and bad at bats frustrate you, you will not like him. There's a reason why he's playing in AAA at this point in his career. I agree with you completely regarding Eldred. However, I do think there is a chance Eldred could be duplicating Thome's power numbers and low average to this point of the season. I also believe that there is a far >>> % that Thome would finish the year with much better numbers. Despite my constant belittling of Thome, I will not be at all surprised to see him finish the year with a .260-.265 average, 170K's, and 35 Hr's (and an OBP in the .370+ range). However, it should be said that I personally do not consider those acceptable numbers on a team with a lot of pure sluggers as is. I understand that while I feel this way, that the statheads of the world will say the opposite and gush about what would be a very solid OPS. I prefer to have an OPS driven more on average and slugging than walks and slugging. I will continue to say that hits, not walks, drive in runs (in terms of starting innings, hit or walk, either works great, but to drive in runs you need HITS). Plus when you face very good pitchers (ie, above league average pitchers or even aces) you have a much lower chance (typically) of drawing a walk so being a good hitter becomes even more important (since you can't rely on drawing the walks and are going to have to really have a solid approach to get a hit off a good to great pitcher).

I'd be happy if we got a draft pick for Crede. I thought it was based over the previous two seasons, but I could be 100% wrong on that. And he was so terrible last year that he would have to have one hell of a season to get type A status. Than again, I thought part of the measure was based on other guys at there position (is Crede within the top 30% of 3B, if not, he's not going to get Type A; For Type B you have to be ranked between 31-50% and I do think Crede would fit in that list (but again, last year really hurts him).
