  1. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 05:25 PM) I'm new this season to 24. I had never watched it before because I always missed the beginning of the season and felt it would be too difficult to catch up. Friends told me this year I could watch and be okay not having seen the first two seasons. They were absolutely right. I am loving it so far, even though it took me a week to watch the first two episodes. Now, I am looking forward to catching up with seasons past while staying on top of this season each week. So far so good. Considering your a fan of Jericho, I'd imagine you'll really really dig this as well. Only a couple more weeks till Jericho finally comes back (hopefully enough people watch cause I really dig that show and don't want to see it get cancelled).
  2. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 02:26 PM) Lovie certainly shouldn't settle for less than what the new Falcons head coach got, after what he's done over the past couple of seasons. Norv Turner scares me (after what he did in Oakland), but he's popular in Dallas, either way I could see the Cowboys making a run for him as their new HC or even the OC. Phillips is still the guy though I think. But if the Boys had permission to speak with Jeff Fisher, I think he would certainly be their 1st choice. Petrino's contract was terrible considering he has proven nothing at the NFL level.
  3. Witesoxfan...the dollar amt hasn't been released yet (unless I am missing something).
  4. I think Faulk is a great comparison. And I agree, I think he does enough things well that he will add value to some team (and no I don't think he'll ever be a star, but a darn good 3rd down type back, yep).
  5. I'm glad Pods is having surgery. It could bring some truth to the rumors that he was really slowed last year with lingering problems. I also tihnk he had a hernia or something (I remember a few of our players having off-season surgery). Any timetable on Pods return? The nice thing about Erstad is that he'd look great in the 9 spot (because he's a slap hitter who knows how to handle the bat and run) and can even fit in the 2 spot (albeit his OBP wouldn't be what you'd want, he still again knows how to handle the bat...and I say that in case we have to use Guchi as the leadoff hitter with Pods hurt). I'm excited to have Ersty on the team.
  6. I don't recognize the posters name. I was looking to see if it was specifically one person (and if so I would have said you could take this signing to the bank) but that wasn't the case. That said like I said before I think the Sox are front-runners and I wouldn't be surprised if this guy was right.
  7. QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 11:09 AM) I recently switched from Cox Cable to DirecTV when I moved. I can't stand DirecTV...their customer service is horrible, they're expensive, and their tv guide maneuverability is ridiculously slow. Not to mention losing signal from even a weak storm system overhead. They lock you into contracts too. I signed up and I'm stuck with it for 2 years, plus any changes you make to your system (ie, upgrade from dvr to HD tivo receiver) extends your contract another year. Of course, being the baseball fan I am, I'd switch if I didn't already have it. I hate these deals, although it is good from a business perspective it s***s on the fans. The football package is something like $280 so it'll be interesting to see how much they jack the price up on the MLB package. I don't expect a price raise to the baseball package, but the football package has really shot up over the past few years (a lot of it having to do with them now offering all the games in HD for an additional fee, plus the new exclusive rights deal they had cost Direct TV a lot of money). I have Cox and absolutely love it. If I move to my own place I'd probably consider the dish but where I am now we have about 5 tv's (now we only use 3 of them regularly) but the other two are just hooked up to basic (which is free via cable) but if we had direct tv we'd have to have 2 extra boxes (more money) plus you have to buy equipment (we get our HD DVR's for no additional charge, just a 7.95 fee and even after owning for DirectTV you have to pay like 4.99 for each additional tv). Bottom line this is f***ing horrible. Unless Direct TV wants to give me 3 free HD DVR boxes and cut me a deal on my internet as well (since I get that and phone service through my cable company). Please MLB...don't sign the dotted line. QUOTE(winninguglyin83 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 01:04 PM) What is a slingbox, for the technoogically inept? I have DirecTV. Have had the package for 10 years. It's basically fine -- and not really that expensive. I think it was only $159 last season -- and they take it in four payments. The only annoyances have been that you have to watch the home team announcers (mute button essential for the Twins' games), they only carry the Comcast and WGN games (excluding WCIU or whatever that other channel is) and the picture does disappear during bad weather, which if very annoying if the weather gets bad in the seventh, eighth or ninth inning. But, I'm thinking about the mlbtv.com package this season. Can anybody speak to the pros and cons of Mlbtv.com vs directv? Does that also force you to listen to the feeds from Twinkie Land, the Red Sox and other annoying play by play chumps? The pro's are that you tend to get a couple additional sox games with mlb.tv (that aren't picked up by Xtra innings). But the picture quality on mlb.tv is not that good (its good for being on a computer, but bad when compared to the beauty of watching it on a tv) and ocassionally you'll get connection lags (on MLB's side) that will have the feed stop or skip or do something else funny. I think mlb.tv is a good thing for people that want to watch the games from a computer or who travel a lot (and won't regularly be at home where they can watch on the package). And it is definitely better than the alternative of not being able to see anything. As far as a slingbox, I think its a box that you plug into a tv that somehow connects to the internet and allows you to watch the feed (coming from your TV) through a computer.
  8. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 11:13 AM) They should be ecstatic that Walker left. Instead of Walker in 2007, you get to see Prince and Armando Allen, plus now they get Hughes, which never would have happened had Walker stayed, and they finally beat the mighty Illini for a recruit, so congrats there too. I'll take Walker. The guy is one of the more underheralded backs in Notre Dame history. He was a very patient runner, a good receiver and a steady horse in the backfield. I expect him to go on and be a first day pick (2nd to 3rd round...probably more like 3rd round) and end up having a pretty darn solid career (he did nothing exceptionally, but everything well).
  9. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 11:08 AM) I think Rivera has added something to Lovie's d. I also like the fact he coached with the Eagles and learned from Johnson there. Lovie is a nice coach, I just dont think he is one of those irreplaceable coaches like Bill Walsh. I like Lovie but if the Cowboys start talking crazy money ($5mil +) I have no problem with seeing Lovie leave for a first rounder or 2. And its not like Lovie created thet Tampa 2, I believe Kiffin did. I got news for you, the Bears are going to have to offer Lovie 5 million a year. He flat out deserves exactly that. I figure he'll be one of the 5-7 highest paid head coaches in the league once his deal gets announced. Basically put, 5 mill + is not what I'd consider a ridiculous offer (considering he's proven to be one of the top 7 coaches in the league). IIRC, Lovie was on the original staff that created the Tampa 2 though (Him, Edwards, Dungy, Kiffin, there old dline coach who Lovie always wanted as our DC).
  10. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 11:59 AM) I'm with Felix. I just really like the Orange jerseys. If Benson becomes the runner we think he will be, that'll be my next jersey, and that one will be in Navy blue. As one of Benson's biggest backers, that could very well be my next (I'm finally going to buy a white one). Albeit all of my football jerseys are reebok replicas (well the Conway is technically a Nike replica and maybe McNown was when Addidas was doing the Bears jerseys).
  11. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 10:31 AM) In fact out west the trend is to wear them so low that at least 2 inches of crack are showing. How else is somebody supposed to snort a line off you
  12. I misread the question. I thought you meant only two world series champs had players that won a gold glove. Well in that case, I think Guillen won one and I'd say Carlton Fisk probably won one too. Third choice would be Ventura because he was amazing but I don't know if he ever won the award.
  13. QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 10:57 AM) Since 1978, only two WS guys have won a gold glove, who are they? NO GOOGLE, JUST GUESS. Well Erstad is one of them as he was a gold glove first baseman for that Angels team (or at least I think he was). I'd imagine the other would be Greg Maddux. If I were to make a 3rd pick I'd say Jeter, but I don't think he ever won a gold glove when he won the world series (because at that point I'm pretty sure Arod was winning all the GG's for SS's).
  14. From a business perspective it makes total sense for both sides. MLB will generate far more money in revenue than they would before and DirecTV has another exclusive rights deal that will try to force more people to DirectTV (or those that have to get the package). All in all, its a load of BS. On a sidenote, I'm going to merge this thread with an original post and discussion that started yesterday about this exact subject.
  15. QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 10:17 AM) Does anybody really believe Curtis is dead? That seemed awfully gratuituous to kill him off in the premiere like that. Blue Tooth Man being his brother was certainly a twist I didn't see coming. Can't wait to see what the dad's up to--talk about a dysfunctional family! So far so good this year on 24--well worth the wait! Yeah, they said he was dead again at the beginning of the episode and the computer lady said why do all the people close to me die.
  16. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 09:36 AM) Not to be a jerk, but you know this...how? I mean, isn't it possible that he could find something? Wasn't Brendan Donnelly a late bloomer? Ya Donnelly was a late bloomer, but the guy had pretty good stuff and how many Brandon Donnelly's are there. I'm sorry, we have a zillion guys in our system that are better. Plus we have a ton of guys in our major league pen that are better. And if I'm wrong, I think everyone here knows I'd be more than willing to admit it (in fact whenever I say something negative about a Sox, I hope that I am wrong). But not only are his stats terrible, but he doesn't have major league stuff (which is what I typically look at over stats, but when you add the two of them together it overwhelming tells me its simply a minor league signing).
  17. Wow...I had on idea that was his brother. Talk about a twist.
  18. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jan 22, 2007 -> 10:42 PM) Oops.. And if that isn't bad... "Oakland is preparing to make a run at Michael Vick. The package would include WRs Randy Moss and Jerry Porter plus the No.1 overall pick in the 2007 draft for Vick and Atlanta's first-round pick. -- foxsports.com" http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/scorecard/index.html I actually like that trade. The Raiders get rid of two pieces of crap and get a guy who really could use a change of scenery. And whether you like Vick or not, you can't deny the fact that he's a playmaker who is arguably coming off his best season. Mistaken in all of the Raiders filth last year was the fact that they actually had a pretty damn good defense. They get a QB whose ready now (as opposed to taking a crap shoot guy like Marshall) dump two guys they can't stand and get a solid first rounder from the Falcons (maybe for a RB or a WR). I would be quite impressed if the Raiders did all that. Plus with there horrendous line it would help to have a QB that could run
  19. QUOTE(Gage Loves Me @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 12:55 AM) I can't wait for the skills competition tonite. Young stars game should also be great. Was I right? The skills comp is just on regular versus (won't be picked up on InHD??). Either way should be fun to watch.
  20. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jan 23, 2007 -> 06:43 AM) Guys, don't take offense, but what's with all the love for the orange jerseys? Maybe it's just the fact that I like the more 'classic' jerseys, but I can't stand those and would never even consider buying an orange one. You guys just dig the color, or...? I was going to say the same thing Keith. I got a navy Grossman, a navy Curtis Conway, and a navy Cade McNown (my favorite collegiate QB of all time). That said I am a fan of the road white jersey's too, but I don't own many jerseys (as you can see by my collection of 3 in the 12+ years I've been watching the Bears).
  21. Chisoxfn replied to Texsox's topic in The Filibuster
Interesting, I actually agree with Bloomberg's quotes and that article for the most part. That said they were still pretty quiet on what they actually want to do. What changes to SOX they want to make and how they want to go about getting rid of the frivolous securities lawsuits.
  22. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jan 22, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) I need to see Uggla for another before I put him in the upper echelon. There's something about him - and I'm not exactly sure what...perhaps the .340 OBP or a mediocre 5.35 AB/K...that I don't trust yet. I also think he's a very good candiate to regress this year. He's more than a good candidate to, I'd fully expect it.
  23. Soriano has a hose though and I think teams were pushing him based on his in-experience. You'll see those numbers decrease and I think you'd have seen him turn into one of the better LF'ers in the game (defensively). However, it is going to be quite the learning experience for him out in CF.
  24. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jan 22, 2007 -> 05:22 PM) It applies for the 2007 season and the next 6 years after that. You got to be freaking kidding me. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jan 22, 2007 -> 06:29 PM) Dallas McPherson will miss most of the season He waited way too long to do this. His back has prevented him from being a consistent 40 HR a year guy. God he had the abliity to be good, real good.
  25. I want to point out one rule I have for these awards. There will be absolutely no spamming of members for votes or anything like this. There is no self promotion, this is not like running for president. This is meant to be a fun off-season thing and it is something that has become a bit of a tradition here at Soxtalk. Hopefully we have some new winners this year and I'll be excited to see who gets to join me in the Hall of Fame Class, but for any of you members posting on roids, I will petition to have you removed from the hall
