Man I am calling this draft pretty well...said we'd take a catcher pretty early and there it is.

Official Day 1 Draft Thread
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:32 PM) Like you said...he's a project, but will he really have the time to develop as a pitcher. He's a sure-fire top 15 pick in next year's NFL draft. The Cubs are going to give a lot of money to a project who I would be shocked if he ever contributed in the majors. In the 5th round with no other picks why not take a chance. He's more talented than any other 5th rounder. However, your gonna have to throw out a lot of money to stop him from playing his senior season at ND. The Cubs (w Hendry's connection) are about the only team with a shot at doing so. I want Jeff to play FB, he's better at that, plus I love ND and we need him. Edwards had an 81/9 strikeout to walk ratio

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:30 PM) I really like our pick that late in the first round. I don't care if a pitcher is a power guy or finesse. I want a guy that knows how to get hitters out. People seem to think the Cubs have an agreement with him in the 5th round. I think it's foolish, as he's nowhere near as good as his hype in baseball. Also, he's going to end up being a football guy in the long run. I disagree, Smardtza has really came on, outstanding athlete with good stuff, but he's more of a project than the typical collegiate QB taken early on.

QUOTE(farmteam @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:28 PM) I haven't read the thread, but is Samardzija gone yet? What about the Sox taking a chance on him in the later rounds? No and my guess is he will slide to the Cubs. Apparently Hendry has a good rep with ND's head coach and the Cubs will have money to spend. They could take him in the 5th and throw supplemental round money at Jeff. Otherwise I'd think Jeff would fall and a team will finally take a flier on him but Jeff will probably not get the money it would take for him to play baseball (remember, he's probably a 1st rd pick in the NFL at WR).

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:22 PM) Sounds kinda Barry Zito-ish? I can't make that comparison. Too many people compare guys with a great hook to Zito and as of now he's obviously got a long way to go to be there. Not many guys can use a High FB with the effectivness of Zito (despite a lack of velocity). We'll se if he can do it, but he has really good command for a prep player. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:23 PM) Okay, well, power pitchers tend to be 100% effort, every pitch guys. You'd think that a guy who's hitting 98, 99, 97 on every pitch using all of his might is more likely to get hurt than a guy who's sitting at 92-93, and hitting 94 when need be. I don't think you have much room to complain, but whatever... It happens every year. Technically speaking, regardless you are throwing 100% usually, some guys do it easier than others. Its called "easy heat" by a lot of scouts, but often times scouts exagerate.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:14 PM) We have had a couple of mid-90's pitchers. Honestly, the only real arm that has developed from our drafting under this regime is BMAC, who was sorta a reach. Mac was taken in like the 17th round so I don't know how he's a reach.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:11 PM) I don't really blame the Sox for drafting finesse guys. Since when have we actually been able to develop power arms? The only power pitcher we've had in the last 5 years was a cast-off from the Angels organization (and now Thornton, who's from the Seattle organization). We tend to draft finesse guys that can be quick movers who we feel are good value while at the same time we pick up waived guys or guys with little value that are power pitchers and try to make the finishing touches to them (we have a few guys down in AA that the club picked up this off-season that got killer arms).

Official Day 1 Draft Thread
Edwards is one of the top prep lefties out of Florida but doesn't have much velocity (still growing though) but he doesn't project to throw hard either. May move into the upper 80's, but he tops out at 90 and pitches in the mid 80's. Has very good command of all 3 pitches (FB, Changeup and curve) and is a commit to the University of Georgia. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:08 PM) All finesse type of guys. Interesting. Our 2nd pick throws in the mid 90's.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 12:01 PM) Would the Sox really take three pitchers, when they're MIF/C prospects are so weak? Three guys to look at still on the board: Walden, Betances, and Jason's guy, Hughes. HUGHES is good and I like taking guys coming from good schools who do a good job with pitchers (LONG BEACH STATE IS THAT). Walden is good too.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 11:58 AM) The Nats picked Stephen King -- described as an extremely athletic kid who has been injured and hasn't put up the numbers quite yet. That's the type of pick I sort of like right now. That's not to say I don't like the Sox picks so far (I'm pretty happy right now), but I like the toolsy type player right now. King was a guy the Nats considered in RD 1 apparently so I think they are happy taking him there. I really like Long. On a sidenote, we will be working on landing some interviews as Heads has already gotten in contact with the top 2 picks of the Sox. Heads is uber wise.

Sox Nab a Closer out of Miami In Round 2
Sox Nab a Closer out of Miami In Round 2 By Jason Gage FutureSox.com Earlier today, FutureSox reported the Sox had interest in taking a collegiate closer out of Miami. Perez was the guy we expected, but with Perez off the board the Sox took Matt Long. Long was one of the top prep players to come out of Ohio in 2002 but has suffered some set-backs along the way...More Info On Matt Long

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 11:20 AM) So, Jason, Cerb, any other draft experts -- who should we be looking at with the second pick? Is Hodges a realistic possibility? Yes, even though he's a 3rd baseman he' sa very good hitter, a good athlete and can switch hit. Obviously we do have a few other guys at 3rd though (Fields and Schnur). I wouldn't be shocked if we take a catcher relatively early though in this draft and I think we'll load the first few rounds on PITCHING. Look for a potential closer here (may even be a reach pick).

White Sox Select Texas Righty Kyle McCulloch
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 11:14 AM) One thing, in the middle of the article, you say he took off for the Aggies. And it should be longhorns. Other than that it looks real good, especially how quickly you got the article up. Haha, talk about a brain fart. Thanks, got it fixed, also thanks to knight's help you can see him in a Sox uni in the article.

White Sox Select Texas Righty Kyle McCulloch
Gracias. If anyone sees any grammatical errors, please point them out. Was doing my best to get this stuff up as quick as possible. In a few we will start up our draft tracker that will list the Sox picks as they come in. Here's a blurb from BA that gives you a background of McCulloch's prior draft experience: Good Decision To Go To College 1:34 p.m.: Kyle McCulloch was originally drafted by the Mets in the 18th round in 2003 out of Bellaire High in Houston. The Mets did not have a second or third round choice that season because of signing Tom Glavine and Cliff Floyd and their was speculation the Mets would try and sign him above slot to get him to bypass college. They did not, and three years later he is a first-round pick.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jun 6, 2006 -> 11:05 AM) They better trade one of these guys, because if we keep drafting clones of each other we will have no divserity in our rotation. Or we like them because they develop quickly so we will be able to market them in a trade a lot more quick. Taking a project means you have a couple years till they are in AA (the point where guys really become marketable for the most part). Taking a guy like Broadway or McCulloch means they are in AA by the time they are eligible (assuming they stay healthy and aren't total busts) so they are immediately very valuable on the trade market.

Wow, Yanks get Chamberlain (great draft for them thus far; expensive one too).
