  1. QUOTE(JimH @ May 15, 2006 -> 10:24 AM) Well Podsednik had a nice long AB in the first inning, I think he looked at 8 pitches. Hopefully that pays off later. Not sure if Konerko and Thome are awake yet though. 2 quick outs for Freddy, looking better than last nite's bottom of the 1st. Yep, Freddy had a real nice 1-2-3 innings. His offspeed stuff looked real good there.
  2. 1st pitch of the day for Freddy was a strike.
  3. QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 15, 2006 -> 10:18 AM) Ooh Paul, that was a pitch for you. Paul with some trouble pulling the trigger there. IT was a ball though. Horrid pitch but there is no way it crossed the plate in the zone. We blew a golden opportunity to start things off right though.
  4. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ May 15, 2006 -> 09:23 AM) With this weather, I've got nothing else better to do. I'm planning on loafing and watching a White Sox winner! i'll be watching the game while writing two papers. I love morning games. Just finished up our latest ST on the Air show and now its time for the Sox game.
  5. QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ May 14, 2006 -> 10:38 PM) What exactly happened with Buehrle's error? Did he throw it too low and Uribe missed it or what? Bad throw. He threw it to the left of the bag mainly because he was kind of falling off the mound (didn't get a good plant).
  6. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ May 14, 2006 -> 10:31 PM) With how well he has done in AAA im starting to get excited about him. I know KW has a history of trading away prospects but him, Sweeney, Valido, and Getz im kind of looking forward to being future whitesox starters. Its kind of far fetched but oh well one can dream. Fields is a definate masher. I could see him playing Left, 1st or DH for a long time. Hell, he has the arm for RF but I don't think he has the range (plus such little experience). The flaw is it will be hard to fit him at any of these positions. I don't see Ozzie getting rid of Pods unless we have a new base stealer at the top of the order (which means no hole in LF unless Anderson stinks and we move Pods to CF; I'm high on Anderson so I don't see that happening). First base we have two poppers, but one of them could get hurt and than you have 3rd where Crede is a freaking stud (especially with the way he's hitting as of late) so if we sign him to a contract he'll be there a while. Of course holes open up. I do think we'll see Fields later in the year (september) if he isn't dealt and he may turn into one of the top hitting prospects in all of baseball. He's really starting to click and he has MASSIVE power.
  7. QUOTE(danman31 @ May 14, 2006 -> 10:22 PM) They did have the #1 pick with Bush, lol. Exactly
  8. I just want to say...we are truly spoiled. It felt like we hadn't won in forever and I was really pleased to see us win. Turned on the game when it was 7-3 and saw the Sox turn things around from there. Big win and hopefully we can split the series tomorrow.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ May 14, 2006 -> 10:19 PM) Is MI:3 worth seeing? Pretty good aside from the fact I hate Tom Cruise.
  10. QUOTE(SoxAce @ May 14, 2006 -> 10:27 PM) I tell ya what Jas, I'm really pulling for this kid. One of the rare 1st rounders we have that can turn out to be a great player. I really hope he succeeds. Seriously, and he isn't just rare...he'd be the first 1st rounder to pan out since Alex Fernandez IIRC.

    Garland

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 13, 2006 -> 01:58 PM) Maybe just for a couple weeks while he gets his head together, rests up his arm, and works on whatever he's missing? A ton of people here get furious with Ozzie when he loses games with the "Sunday lineup", giving the regulars too much rest, we can't sacrifice a single game, etc. Well if Garland is turning into a terrible loss every other time out, maybe we ought to give the kid a shot. Right now the best thing for the Sox is to get Jon Garland rocking. We do that and we can win each and every start. The only way we get him through this is by pitching him completely out of the world (ie he gets shelled all over the place) or by letting him get through this. I think part B is going to happen. Ozzie shows a lot of faith in his players and because of that for the most part they come through. QUOTE(Felix @ May 13, 2006 -> 02:29 PM) You don't give out 29 million dollar contracts to mediocre starters either, but that was already done. He is not a mediocre starter. We can argue whether last year was a fluke, but he was one of the best pitchers in baseball last year. You don't do that without having talent.

    Garland

QUOTE(Chisoxrd5 @ May 13, 2006 -> 12:31 PM) This boggles my mind over almost anything I have previously seen. Whenever someone posts how we should, can, or will trade for Rowand I want to throw myself out a first story window. As for Garland, all i have to say is that he is making my beginning of the season prediction look pretty good. In fact, I might have been overly optomistic. This does not make me happy I definately think there is some reason to be concerned with Garland. On the plus side I really think its upstairs right now, but on the downside sometimes things upstairs can really go south fast and you never get them back. I like Coop a lot and Ozzie has faith in Jon (plus Jon doesn't have a ton of pressure on his shoulders right now) so I think if Jon can just go out there and getting some things to go his way we'll see him get into a groove, but it may take a couple steps. Right now he's in a baby step stage. He needs to forget about his prior starts and what was going wrong and start focusing on the new starts and how he needs to just execute. I honestly think for a while he was out there trying to bring his ERA down to 0 from teh get go and because of it he was leaving a lot of pitches up. Now after he's made those mistakes he tries to make even better pitches and that means he's over throwing a lot of the time and again having less command. HE goes out there and goes 6 or 7 giving up 4 runs or less where he makes some good pitches and I think we'll see him start to build from that. He's a good to very good pitcher thats in a funk right now. He isn't over-powering but when he has the command he had last year, mixed with his stuff, he's a very good pitcher who will give you a lot of innings and keep you in games (and from time to time WIN you games). QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ May 13, 2006 -> 01:04 PM) Contract year dude. Now that he got his money he's back to his old form. We all talked about the possibility of this happening. Technically last year wasn't a contract year. We just took care of him with an extension. We held his rights for this year regardless.
  13. QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 14, 2006 -> 10:02 PM) I looked at Brian's stats on MLB.com....in his last ten games: Avg: .350 R: 6 HR: 2 RBI: 4 BB: 2 K: 3 2 k's were against Santana and this was just in 20 AB, but hey, you gotta start somewhere. At least he no longer looks like a child left alone in the mall. He also still has not committed an error in the majors (jinx) and has 3 assists this year. His range factor (whatever that means) is 3.51. I don't even nkow if thats a good range factor or not (I think nothing of that stupid stat) but I do know he's been one of the 6 best defensive centerfielders thus far this season. I've been incredibly impressed with his defense and I think I'm being harsh when I say top 6 (he could very well be higher than that). Offensively he is starting to look more comfortable and I see him starting to swing more and more at his pitches rather than just being up there trying to protect from everything. He seems to be developing a plan at the plate and I've been impressed. Either way I'm a big proponent of playing him pretty much every day and letting him grow. He has all the tools so hopefully he can come up with a plan of action at the plate thats sucessful.
  14. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ May 14, 2006 -> 09:07 PM) HAS to be in the top 10 for most underrated. Dye never gets talked about, even by most Sox fans, and he has done huge things for this club. Right now he's having about as good of a season as any RFer in baseball. If he stays healthy I figure it will continue too. I love how when he's on how he hits missile line drives to all parts of the field. When he unloads it usually gets out of here in a hurry. He's one of my favorite players in baseball when you combine his offensive ability, attitude and all around defensive skills (plus arm, plus fielder and he used to have plus range). I also want to note one of my theories is looking more and more true. I've been hammering for a while for Ozzie to give Jenks a couple days to rest his arm (Jenks has been used an awful lot and the past couple outings are the reason his ERA has went up). Last year the same thing happened to Jenks and after some rest he came back and looked dynomite. Tonight he comes in and he's throwing gas and snapped off some of those nasty curves that made him famous last year (especially when he first came up). The hook he threw to end the game was AWESOME. Hopefully Ozzie will take note of this and ocassionally give Jenks 3 consecutive days rest from time to time (1 being an off-day and for 2 games use someone like Cotts or Politte to close; hell letting Cotts/Politte close gives them a bit of experience in case we need a backup option due to injury).
  15. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ May 14, 2006 -> 05:01 PM) Agreed 100% Disagree 100%. Logan hasn't been bad this year. I realize he's given up some inherited runs but often times he's put out after not pitching in 10 days...rust is to be expected. Once he gets lose in a game or finds his command hitters rarely square him up (ie hit him hard) and I think he's pretty solid. Lopez wouldn't pitch much at all up here either and he's proven over the long haul that he's a pretty piss poor major league pitcher. Logan made a serious adjustment at a relatively young age and gets really good life on his pitches now. I have zero problem holding Logan up here. If he fails after pitching on a consistent basis, than we can send him down, but thus far I see this as a semi success (a because we haven't need to use him much and b because he hasn't been awful in the games he's pitched). QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ May 14, 2006 -> 08:46 PM) Can anybody tell me how Fields' defense has been so far? Not so good, but he has played a lot better as of late. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ May 14, 2006 -> 09:03 PM) Look Flash, a team who doesn't have the history of relative success as us (i.e. better draft picks than us) and they have a s***ty system. Actually, I'd assume that the Pads were in a very similar position as the White Sox over the years. Aside from a couple years back when they were moving to Petco they have been a relatively competitive team year in and year out in the NL West. This is based of my assumptions and you guys could very well prove me wrong and that they had quite a few years with terrible seasons.
  16. QUOTE(fathom @ May 14, 2006 -> 12:58 PM) We give way too much credit to some of our guys sometimes. In the 5th inning, Vazquez had no command of his fastball. Also, the pitch selection was brutal. You can't be putting 90 mph fastballs right down the plate to Batista. Throwing 4 straight curves in the same location to Hunter is just idiotic also. Vazquez is a good pitcher, but he didn't have a lot of crispness to his pitches last night. Lets not turn into Cubs fans, and think that something drastic has to be happening every time one of our pitchers gets hit hard. He may not have been crisp in the 5th inning, but he was rolling in the first four innings. I left for about 45 minutes as I played baseball at the park down the street and came back to see the final parts of the fifth inning (including the horrid non strikeout call). I think you can make a case for him eventually getting rattled. Sure he gave up some hits too and he didn't make pitches but he let things get to him. That happens from time to time.
  17. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ May 14, 2006 -> 08:57 PM) Reconstructed inning. Single out Single out Single -- Run out ---------- End of inning ------- Theoretical start of second inning. Double Double -- Run Single Single -- Run out out One of the deficiencies in the Earned run stat is it completely overlooks situations like this where the pitcher is REALLY REALLY bad. Thats fine, but after getting rattled a pitcher may pitch differently. Look at Kevin Millwood, he was so dominant last season because he got guys out when it mattered. Often times last year he'd give up hits to start an inning and than shut people down or vice versa. There is no way to assume had Buehrle gotten through that he'd have given up all those hits to the next batters. Thats the thing with stats, they assume a lot of things when you look into them very in depth. Its like assuming Pods (even if he didn't run) wouldn't help a 2 hole hitter when he's on base. A stat guy may say Pods isn't valuable. Someone that watches baseball may see him hit near .300 with a solid OBP and steal a lot of bases (although not always as sucessful as you'd like). They may deem that unnecessary. However, you also have important factors such as Iguchi (or whoever is hitting behind him when Pods is on base) seeing more fastballs (ie better pitches to drive) and therefor they should see there avg rise (of course we all know Iguchi will also give himself up from time to time). I say watch the game and the stats will make sense. You can use them as a way to evaluating whether a player is living up to his potential, but you can't use stats to tell you whether the team is winning or not (aside from the total score stat at the end of the game).
  18. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 14, 2006 -> 10:47 AM) Off the top of my head, this is incorrect. Without even looking at a replay of that inning, I vividly remember Morneau getting his single on an offspeed pitch on the outside corner (a changeup), and same goes for Torii Hunter. IT was either a changeup for FB Vazquez hit. Definately not a breaking ball. But I thought a bigger problem was Vazquez let the hits get to him and he was rattled by that and the bad call(s).
  19. Fixed it. It must be something with the way the logo changer works now that somehow removed a centering code.
  20. QUOTE(THEWOOD @ May 13, 2006 -> 10:01 AM) IS anyone else seeing everyingthing on this board centered? I'm not, but Heads could be messing with something. Is it still there?
  21. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ May 13, 2006 -> 01:21 AM) My mom has breast cancer. My parents have known for about a month but they didn't tell me cause they didn't want me to get freaked out with finals and s*** coming up. It was such a weird feeling when she told me, I didn't know what to do. Oh man, that totally sucks. My grandma got through breast cancer about 10 years ago. Cancer is a rough disease, but hopefully they caught it soon enough. Thoughts and prayers go out to your mom, you and the rest of your family
  22. QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 12, 2006 -> 06:44 PM) They aren't towards year end I believe. On a separate note, wite and I had the greatest AIM chat ever.
  23. QUOTE(MnSoxFan @ May 12, 2006 -> 08:53 AM) Anyone ever hear what Sweeney's injury was? I've asked around and the org is being very tight lipped with it. I'll ask again though to see if I can get some more info on the situation.
