I presume this was more of an issue of bad schemes which didn’t mix with our positions and overall offense. Call it fit vs bad coach but I could be wrong. Oline did get impacted by injuries late but the ground game and overall blocking was a disaster. So was the passing game. Everyone responsible for the offense has a shit ton of work to do and self reflection if they are going to turn this thing around. This offense was absolutely awful and did nothing well. They have literally no strength/identity.

The question is how much of the passing game is on Nagy vs Mitch not trusting his eyes and not having protection/time to go downfield? But yes it was implied that Nagy spends a lot more time with QB and passing game. They dialed up some nice downfield plays but obviously a lot left to be desired.

Jahns also reported that the oc and ol coach were responsible for the rushing part of the offense and the related schemes. Nagy might call the plays but he wasn’t the one regularly coaching the units and drawing up the ground game scheme. A head coach can only do so much on offense. He will always be involved but he has to rely on others. The mesh just wasn’t their and hopefully the Bears can upgrade. I would think Nagy still has some ability to go out and get someone and people from afar should see this gig as a possible turn around opportunity given how strong the defense is.

Conference went exactly as I expected and I still think they are making the right statement on Mitch. He is going to be the starter to open next season, unless he has a bad off-season. They will bring in a back-up who is more capable of being the starter though. They are not going to get Cam Newton. Worst thing out of the entire press conference was the fact that Anthony Miller needs surgery on his shoulder and will essentially miss the off-season. This will be the second time this shoulder is operated on as well.

Hopefully the 2020 year in review is a year of everyone singing Kumbaya as the Sox rebuild ended in proper fashion with a World Series championship. What...a man can dream, right? Either way this place has a lot of people that make it special. I don't post near as much as I used to, due to work and family obligations, but I still read religiously and despite how tough it has been as a Sox fan this decade, we finally appear headed/positioned for what should be a fun decade (2020).

Smith would make a lot of sense. Probably open to backup role and also familiar with system. If he does well, he knows he has good shot at starting but I also assume he will be open to mentoring Mitch. That said no idea whether Smith will be healthy.

I’m hoping Bears move on from their OC and Oline coach and land Shurmer and Callahan. While I am not blaming Heistand and Helfrich, I don’t think their schemes were great fits with Nagys and I think the seasoned Callahan and Shurmer would be great alongside Nagy to help challenge him, etc. I remain optimistic that Nagy can truly learn from this and this can end up a blip in a strong run as head coach. Or at least I have to hope that. There is a lot to learn from this past season.

I sometimes wonder why so much short stuff and is it Mitch or is it the system. We specialize in throwing five yards short of the sticks. I figure a good part has to be on Mitch but so many seem to be design. The inability to run and have a good screen game certainly have hurt.

I think he earned one more year. I have my issues with him but the team didn’t give up and the culture is supposedly pretty good. He has a lot to learn and I think he has the mentality where he will give an honest assessment of everything over the offseason. Reality is everything came too easy for Bears a year ago (players and coaches) and I think from the kicking absurdity in the offseason to the fact that this team had so many guys only used to being on Bears that not enough people realized how difficult it is to consistently win in the NFL really is. I think the lack of edge and maybe arrogance around team certainty had major implications on the season. Mitch being so apprehensive to throw the ball downfield as well as his injury and his shoddy play certainly contributed as well. That said a good offseason, an easier schedule, and some slight adjustments and I can certainly see this team being back in playoffs and back with a nice trajectory...but with Mitch’s future much more in doubt they are going to have a tough choice to make as to how to handle QB situation.

I’m just glad they showed up. Vs second string or not...they still can’t score but at least they didn’t lose by 40 and end the year on a complete dud.

What a great way to end the Hawkeye season. Beat the team I hate the most!!! Makes up at least somewhat for how much my Bears disappointed. Stanley is so frustrating. If dude could ever put together any form of true consistency this team could have been special. All the numbers he put up in his career at Iowa, but it was the games where he made zero plays that I will always remember about Stanley. Still one of Iowa’s all time best QBs.

Nothing. He also has tools that if he ever put in the work, you might actually see him hit is potential (which is well above average). The thing is, the negatives with the Dodgers in terms of his clubhouse fit and work ethic are just so freaking bad. It did seem like he might have benefited from a change of scenery with the reds (even though the stats didn't back that up). It seemed like he fit in the clubhouse better, so maybe that helped. I just see too much downside of his potential impact on our young and developing players, albeit, I would absolutely love having him the player (with his upside and ability to be a two way player, which we could use, given Mazara and Jimenez are both lousy defensive outfielders.

This. They need to address the bullpen. Right now it looks like a giant black hole and the trouble is the relief market just doesn't have much anything out there right now. Sox should see who they could pick up from teams who aren't looking to contend and might want to drop some cash.

A good veteran player too...would be nice to have around younger players (he's been a part of some very good teams).

Stone making such direct statements shooting down Puig/Castellanos really is something.

I legitimately wonder who it could be. Everyone has been so focused on the Red Sox due to other rumors, but could it be a closer or a front end pitcher. Obviously Arrenado is out there (but would require Moncada making a position change). Very interested as it seems the Sox have thought REALLY BIG this offseason.

Why is everyone speculating some big deal about to be announced?

A guy like Leury who can play all over can allow you to carry an extra catcher / DH potentially.

Yes metrics don’t love him but he can be an elite defender and an above average player. Anyone signing him is taking a chance they can coach him and/or his switch has flipped to the positive. Huge risk and while I think Jose can handle it, Puig could just as wel implode everything built (and I don’t love the idea of having Puig around Robert and Moncada).

Bullpen still has major issues and is right now projected by me to be the Achilles heal of the rebuild. Don’t like projecting Burdi, Hamilton etc with all those injuries and felt like some of the current mainstays are bound for some regression back to the mean. I know it is a crapshoot and some guys definitely have potential but this pen has some holes to be filled.

I like fact that Puig can actually play defense and has upside. I don’t like Puigs attitude which has always prevented the upside from emerging. That said it sounded like his time with Reds went better than time with Dodgers but boy were all the local reports really really bad on Puig and his impact on clubhouse.
