  1. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 11:54 AM) Re: Vegas I will need to do some digging, but I'm pretty sure I've seen labor reports that indicate that Vegas has a much higher percentage of residents who work 2nd shift compared to other major cities. Regardless of whether you are relying on tourists or locals to fill the stadiums and watch games on TV, you have an awful lot of them who are already busy during the hours that sporting events are typically played. It's almost like you have to treat Vegas as a metro area that is 20-30% smaller than it really is because of the unavailability of the population during the evening hours. You have massive hotels that would buy up tons of season seats.
  2. Key right now is health and getting the rust out. Fact that the guy is already holding his own is impressive enough. The practices is where he is probably learning the most anyway, although exhibitions are good for him to challenge his body and help with conditioning. That said, system is very selfish right now with a lot of iso play and Rose has never been one to really be aggressive on teams full of other stars. He's getting minutes and not hurting the team and he's actually shown some good passing which is nice.
  3. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 03:17 PM) Beat you to it? No; I'm a CSUF alum and go to a good amount of games so was looking forward to seeing what he could do in his second year with the squad. On paper there rotation was going to be downright nasty.
  4. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 03:03 PM) As far as Gattis goes, the Braves have one of the worst offenses in the NL and they're trading away one of their most productive hitters? I will believe that when I see it. Sure, I get it, they have their best hitter at 1B and unless Gattis could play 3B or LF, he doesn't have as much value, but they're definitely not going to make a move like that for Danish AND Montas. I wouldn't trade those guys for Gattis, but i would make a trade for Gattis. Would be a nice fit in the lineup who I think still has some potential upside.
  5. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 01:12 PM) From Twitter it sounds like Rose played awful again. 3 out of 4 games now... Let's hope it's just rust. He looked good in the first exhibition game and the practice, so that was 2 good games. The last game, other then not being very aggressive on offense, he looked pretty solid, making a lot of good passes, etc. No idea this game as I haven't watched it yet, but I haven't thought he looked bad at all. He is much less aggressive in terms of looking for his shot though, but that seems to be his nature when he has other guys playing around him. Everyone seems to say he's been good defensively, although my perspective is he's been pretty horrific defensively and spends too much time standing around, etc.
  6. QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 12:53 PM) Agreed. Every time I fly to AZ to visit my parents, it never fails that the person in from of me reclines. I'm 6'5 so I casually and intentionally bump my knees and nudge it for a few seconds. It never fails and they incline. As far as I'm concerned, the seat comes with the functionality so the passenger is fully entitled to use it. That doesn't mean pull it up and down a million times, but you are entitled to your space. No reason to throw water in the persons face though.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 09:44 AM) I still find this hard to believe. Tax that stuff at 100% and you're still only touching a portion of the total pie. Just triple or quadruple the rate? :facepalm
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 26, 2014 -> 08:47 AM) Read the phrase "increasing the personal tax rate to make up for it". It would be a genuine simplification of the tax code that would put a lot of financial wizards who do nothing but poke holes in the corporate tax code out of business. Of course, since Congress won't do that it's just imaginary, but when you look at the amount of money being blown for no good reason on these accounting tricks to avoid the corporate tax, it starts becoming a decent case. So your answer is just tax the people more?
  9. Very cool stuff Steve. Site looks beautiful. Love the mountain goat comments.
  10. This is a pretty nifty little device. Makes it easier to cut the cord, as long as you can get ESPN 3 through your cable to give you the bulk of your live sports fill. Of course if you want their channel guide and stuff, you are talking about 15 bucks as month, which seems pretty steep.
  11. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 11:23 AM) Yea, but that season starting defense lost a lot of starters. Im just hoping that the coaches treated this game like the exhibition it is and they werent really gameplanning. The players say they didnt game plan for it, i hope they arent lying. Game 3 you usually have some form of a gameplan. That said, Seahawks are a good team, however these special teams issues are just pathetic.
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 07:27 AM) Leaving Friday thinking not that big of a deal. But I'm pretty much banking all hope on our defense on the fact that some vets didn't really care (briggs looked awful/peanut). I felt this last year, I'm really nervous bears are going to become the dallas cowboys. This talented team that's lack of discipline shoots itself in the foot and we have a perpetual 8-8 machine. Here's to pre-season not mattering I hope. Special teams is consistently awful. Defense has been atrocious. Have to be worried, given that is exactly what we saw a year ago. Only saving grace I have is last preseason our defense looked very good only to end up sucking, so maybe the opposite holds true here. My expectations have came crashing down because I've seen far too many reminders of some pretty pathetic things that happened a year ago.
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 01:09 PM) I think the results in the Belle era were disappointing, but that guy was an absolute wrecking ball in a sox uniform, especially during his hit streak In Belle's last 2 seasons with Cleveland he hit 50 and 48 homers while hitting over .300. In fact, in his last 3 seasons with Cleveland he posted OPS+ of 194, 177, and 158. In two seasons with White Sox he had a 116 and 172. IIRC, Belle's first season in Chicago, with all the expectations around that team, he got off to a slow start and while he put up good numbers, they weren't to the point of what he did the two / three previous years. He then went on a complete and utter terror and IIRC had two different years where he had big 2nd halfs with us. In reality his 2nd season he was a total monster, it was the initial season, where we were paper favorites to win the world series, where Belle and pretty much our entire rotation didn't live up to the high expectations. This is going off of memory but that team had the makings of a dynasty and it never happened and fell apart pretty quickly after.
  14. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 09:39 AM) Hahn may have been very general and speak in a lot of fluff terms this morning, but it was obvious to me that he is pretty disappointed in this season and wants to get this ship pointed in the right direction, and stay pointed in that direction with depth and stability. I think he has some plans for this offseason First and foremost, you have to find some bullpen arms and the bright side is, if you are willing to try youngsters, you can probably poach some guys from other teams systems. Often times, those reliever prospects just aren't that tough to pull, if you want to find them. I don't expect them to spend a ton of money, however, I think we'll see a pretty busy off-season with one or two major trades (and by major, I don't mean getting superstar, but with club acquiring young cost controlled talent...possibly at the expense of other talent). Maybe we'll see a big FA signing but I would be surprised, presume we will wait and go bargain shopping in FA market.
  15. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 08:32 PM) I'd like to see them stash Nieto in AAA next year and try and find a guy to compete with Tyler for the starting job. There is no way he should come into next spring the de facto starter but I'd have no problems with him winning the job over another cheapish, 1-2 WAR type. They might have to get creative but I wouldn't even mind taking a flier on McCann. They have money to spend, that might be the best way. I trust Hahn more the KW to take on big salary responsibly. We'll see if Hahn can get creative when the Sox are near contention with end of the roster type stuff that was KW's strong suit. I expect Nieto will be in the minors next year. Would look for them to bring a veteran around and I just don't see anything out there to justify us making a big move at the catcher position.
  16. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 09:31 AM) well alrighty then Haha. Honestly, I think that is why I find the Sox team still tough to watch. We don't have those exciting game changing defensive players, outside of Ramirez, who is on his last legs (and extremely underappreciated). Eaton is fun to watch but our corner outfielders are atrocious and we are below average at 3B and quite frankly 2B. That might change a bit cause I think Semien / Sanchez will hold there own and while Johnson is more raw, if he ends up there, he can be fine too. Would love to find a strong RF'er so we can move Avisail to LF. In fact, I think we could add 2 OF'ers and then with the depth in the infield be able to do some nice things not needing a full time DH. We really have to find a way to get another quality starter though and do a lot to the pen. I actually think those are what is really holding us back from contending and I dont' know that what we need is in our system either (at least not near turn....and I know we have Rodon, I just think we need 2 guys, so Rodon plus someone). It is why I think if we end up with a top 10 pick, we could really benefit and hopefully be able to land a top right handed pitcher (as I expect that will be our focus). Then try to focus some more money / other spects on athletic position players since we can't freaking develop them ourselves.
  17. I still would love to see Cespedes on the Sox. I think with Abreu he'd make a couple adjustments at the plate and be a total impact player. I also just really like toolsy players and guys with hoses and well he fits the bill. I'm excited about the fact that we have three guys, Semien, Johnson, and Sanchez that I think have good chances at being at least, cost controlled, league average players. I also like the fact that it will likely give us depth and versatility too. Put someone like Semien in the 9 spot (or 2 spot) with Johnson hitting 1 or 2 (along with Eaton) and that is pretty solid. Maybe it is Sanchez in the 9 and Semien up a bit in the order due to his pop. Either way, that gives us a much deeper, imo, back of the lineup. I'm also starting to get comfortable with Flowers at catcher, due to his defense, and the fact that well, pretty much every catcher in baseball sucks offensively now.
  18. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) It is at least worth kicking the tires on. Completely agree.
  19. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) Is it protected? It has a chance to be a high pick if not. I believe there is some protection on it, but i'm not certain. I also wouldn't expect it to be a high pick. We are talking about the east here and Bosh / Wade / Deng plus the rest of the roster should be able to secure a playoff spot.
  20. QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 08:51 AM) Fairly certain he's in their plans if they JUST signed him. He is saying had Bradley not busted, they don't sign Rusney. Kind of like me saying, had Beckham panned out, we wouldn't have traded him to the Angels. But still a valid point, they are having to spend a lot on the international FA market because they have not been able to find quality internal replacements.
  21. QUOTE (bmags @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 08:45 AM) what did philly get? The Miami 1st round draft pick via Cleveland.
  22. Hard to know what is crazy vs. what isn't. Remember scouting reports on Abreu were all over the map too. All I know is if the only reason the White Sox stayed out of it was because he was a righty vs. a lefty, then I am not happy. Hopefully it had more to do that they their scouting reports had more concerns and given where the contract was headed they couldn't justify it.
  23. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 07:11 AM) Thought I was the only one, that movie bored me. First Sin City is one of the worst movies ever made as far as I'm concerned. It was pure trash.
