QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 07:50 AM) Why. Cause the stolen base is overvalued (see Ellsbury signing) so now the market has overcorrected and there is value in the guy that steals .5 bases per season!!! Plus its Paul f***ing Konerko!!!

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 06:48 AM) The difference between Fran and Lickliter is incredible. Iowa can score a ton. Players like to score. I think he is going to start landing some big recruits in the next few years. Agreed. Great depth and some good looking players, plus they will have a nice core returning again next year. I hope this keeps up cause not only does he make Iowa basketball fun to watch (and for the players fun to play) but he also has changed the entire culture. Plus the new facilities, everything, should help a ton. That was as excited as I've seen Carver in a number of years. Defense has to step up though. Jok looks like he might be a player too. -
2013-14 off season player movement thread

SS2k5 makes this thread awesome. Dude is a machine and keeping me up to date with all things baseball. I'm going to call him SSGammons from now on. An all time great, much like Southsider!!! -
Less money then I expected. I love me some Paulie.

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 07:35 AM) You get 324 starts between 1B and DH. Maybe it can work with something like this... Abreu- 140 Dunn- 108 Konerko-76 Nahh...this is going to be bad. Konerko against lefties is good and Dunn isn't so production of that spot should be better. Only thing that really stinks is we have two guys who pretty much play 1st/DH and a 3rd guy who should just DH (Dunn), although he technically can play LF and 1B.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 07:31 AM) That can work, and would likely be a formidible group. But you still need to have to cover the OF and skill IF positions with two guys, or alternately shorten up the bullpen to 6. I think more moves are coming. Club has some depth in the sense that we have a few outfielders that can play pretty much every position there and some utility infielders that should be able to do the same. Club still has to find a way to upgrade 3B and potentially 2B. I would not be surprised to see some moves happen which strengthen the infield and I still expect an upgrade at catcher and would be extremely disapointed if we started the year with the same turds we had last year.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 07:26 AM) I expect exactly that. I'm going to expect Abreu to get 400-ish PA's until I'm proven wrong. It strikes me as the same thing they've pulled with young player after young player, screwing around with them until they're "Veterans". Chris Sale stuck in the bullpen, the way Santiago has been messed around with, the way Viciedo was bounced back and forth between positions and between the minors and the bench in the big leagues clearly before he was ready, and I could keep going if I went back beyond just guys on the current roster. Dunn will get short changed at bats before Abreu doesn. I also dont' think it is bad for Abreu's development if he plays 5.5 of every 7 games early in the season. That gives Paulie 1.5 game in stead of Abreu, he can play whenever dunn faces a lefty, and probably start ocassionally against righties for Dunn as well. At bats can go around and the team needs to make sure they don't overpush Abreu. Abreu isn't some rookie...he is a really expensive rookie and the club is going to pay him. This isn't Tyler Flowers or Josh Phegley going against AJ. This is a highly touted guy going up against a player who is going to take a lesser role with the team. Now if Paulie opens the season hitting like the Paulie of 2 years ago, clearly the club is going to find ways to get him at bats, but again, I still think a chunk of those at bats would be coming at the expense of Dunn. Abreu is going to get his AB's.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 07:13 AM) I am surprised Konerko came back. With Abreu in the fold, and Dunn still around, he has to know that PT will be fleeting, especially if his problems the last couple of years weren't just because of injury. My thought is I wonder if Paulie is looking at this as a chance to work in more of a "coaching" role to see if he likes the idea of doing this type of a job in the future. It has to be in the back of his head knowing that Kenny wanted to hire him as a manager. I like having Konerko back. Partially because he's an all time favorite and secondly because he became such a good pure hitter that there is a chance that if he's healthier and plays in a more limited role, he can be a pretty productive player for this club. I do hope the club can find a way to move Dunn and then make another move. One thing I don't want to see, is this signing stunt the development of Abreu but given the money the club spent on him, I can't see that happening. I presume he's taking a pay cut but we are probably giving him a little more just because its Paulie and the chairman loves him.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 3, 2013 -> 12:16 PM) You're paying for your phone right now, probably at least $20 a month. The carrier subsidizes your phones and then charges you for them on a month to month basis through their plans. T-Mobile is the only company that's actually making that transparent to the customer at this point, which is why their service is generally cheaper by $20-30. I might be but my plan with a fun is the same price as a new t mobile plan. Plus if I bought a fun I'd pay the extra 20 you claim per month and then another 200 for a lot of the phones. Not worth it to me.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 09:56 PM) And yeah, I love that I can make my phone work exactly the way I want it to. Change for the sake of change is okay, but the beauty of it is that it actually functions for me. My workflow is all about the customizations I've made on my Android devices. Also, it is really immature at this point, but Windows is taking notes from Apple and really unifying their OS across devices. I really like the direction they are going -- at this point, they are just in dire need of app development over anything else. They have their stuff on some really great hardware, their UI is unique, attractive, and functional, and the company has been acting like they really want to do things differently. I sent in a "complaint" about a bug in an app and they emailed me back telling me that their developers were part of the way done in patching it and that they appreciated the input A good phone should have that base for everyone and then allow the root feature for full customization for the small percentage of the population that want all that s***.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 09:51 PM) Samsung is the king of bloatware. I've been actively avoiding their stuff because their UI is slow and the design is yucky. Nexus 5 is literally zero bloatware and can have nice resale value, especially when they randomly go out of stock in the Play Store. S4 has some really cool features though and is in general a top-notch device, not trying to say you screwed up Everything i've read pointed me to the Samsung over S4 too. I also won't pay for a phone. I can't get the Nexus for free (although I could get it for like 29 bucks so close to it). I refuse to pay for a phone.

Dylan,...you busted your but and tried your best. Best of luck to you and hopefully you stick on somewhere as a swingmen!

Doesn't surprise me. I just hope he isn't the opening day starter. Hopefully they sign AJ. Just makes too much sense and he certainly won't be blocking anyone.

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 03:14 PM) My uncle is trying to decide right now between the S4 and the G2. I have a feeling he will go with the S4 because he's seen more advertisements for it. He asked someone at Sprint to help him decide, and the salesperson said "Well, they all do the same things anyway". lol, what an unhelpful person. I was deciding between the S4 and Nexus 5. I can't argue free and the resale value better on the S4. I already hate all the bloatware on these f***ing android phones (or at least this android phone). I know the IOS had some stuff but jesus, this thing seems to have way more. And no, I don't want to f***ing root it.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 2, 2013 -> 04:43 PM) Orgeron furious and quit. Talk about a hot commodity. As an assistant, absolutely, as a head coach...meh. Good hire for a solid FBS school. He'd be a nice hire for someone like Illinois, but ultimately he's a best fit out west where his recruiting skills would better serve him. It is hard to ignore the disasterous run he had at Ole Miss as a HC though. -

QUOTE (QuickJones81 @ Nov 27, 2013 -> 05:40 PM) If you were Rick Hahn, and you had two options for a catcher in front of you, which would you take and why: Option A: Jarrod Saltalamacchia at a cost of 4 yrs / $36M Option B: Matt Wieters at a cost of Erik Johnson, Tyler Flowers, and Carlos Sanchez I think it would cost more for Wieters then you are proposing but at that price, I'll go with Wieters. Superior defensively and we seem to be able to find pitching.

I am in the 6th seed by my lonesome. I technically haven't clinched but i lead the entire league in points by a long shot so even if I lose (playing 1st place team who has 200 less ooints then me) I'll hold the tie-breaker. The big thing for me is to not have just an epicaly poor week that i lose my overall points leader status as at least then I'll break even in my league. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 08:57 AM) If I were in charge, I would offer Rose for a top 5 pick in this draft. In a heartbeat. I don't know if another team would make that offer (not at this point). Not with the money involved.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 08:56 AM) I understand that, but realistically if you have a Rose at 75% of what he was, Butler, Mirotic, Noah, that is a team that isn't going to get into the lottery and a team that isn't going to win a championship. The proper rebuild, if you are convinced Rose will not be the player he was is to dump everyone who is good, perhaps Rose himself. You'd have to dump Rose if you plan on tanking for multiple top picks. However, I don't think that guarantees a successful rebuild. They need to find a way to get young assets.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 08:54 AM) The Bulls shouldn't not care one iota about what the fans think. It is about what is best for the franchise. Bulls fans will show up no matter what, which allows them to do a proper rebuild. The reality they need to start finding players who will be around Rose next year and in future years and they also need to try and find a 2nd face of the franchise that is young and hope that if Rose isn't the player he once was, but is still an above average player, the two, combined with a strong core, can potentially win a title. What really pisses me off more then anything is this started because of the lockout and the fact that the NBA didn't protect its players by giving them adequate rest (when they should have either limited the # of games played in the strike season by more or extended the playoffs by another couple of weeks.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 26, 2013 -> 08:48 AM) I am saying that as a fan. It is the only way the Bulls have a legit chance at a title the next 5 years. You can draft a couple more Jimmy Butlers, and Mirotic can be a really good player and you can still win 55 games during the regular season, but the hardest thing to acquire is stars, and the Bulls are really in a tougher position than most to do that. I completely agree with you DA.
