  1. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 01:13 PM) He has decent control on his fastball, that much is true. But he's thrown his fastball 78% this year. That just screams thrower (at least in my definition of what a thrower is). He needs more variety, that's all I was saying. And Rivera throws almost all fastballs too, doesn't make him a thrower. A thrower is a guy that has no idea where anything is going to go and no general understanding of pitching. Nothing about Reed screams out like that. I think part of this is more the fact that he's young and they are still working with him on his secondary stuff and AJ just doesn't call the other stuff as much. To be frank, I think AJ needs to do a better job calling for better pitch/location differentiation (as I wouldn't expect a rookie to be calling off the veteran catcher very often).
  2. The line at the Chik-Fil-A across the street from me was huge. I got there before the line was too big. Meal was delicious and I was served by the owner of the establishment (you know, someone who has invested money in the business and has a lot of money and his livelihood at stake). I'm certainly not boycotting a franchise owned store for something the CEO said (and was perfectly entitled to say). Additionally, he hasn't done anything to treat his employees poorly or to discriminate against them. Note: My coworkers wanted to go, the fact that it happened to be on national chick-fil-a day was pretty much oblivious to all of us (until I logged onto facebook afterwards).
  3. QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 01:07 PM) He needs to learn how to pitch. He's been a thrower this year and with the stuff he has that's understandable. But he's starting to use the changeup much more effectively and that's good to see. The reason he's been shaky lately is that he hasn't been able to use the slider effectively. He's pretty much been a one pitch pitcher for the last month. His slider's just not enticing for guys to chase now that there's a scouting report on him. He has plus control for someone his age. Nothing about him screams "thrower" to me. In fact, I think as he gains experience and the team gains further comfort of his use of off-speed stuff, you'll really see him develop. He has pretty clean mechanics and the makings of 2 good secondary pitches (slider & change).
  4. Great series win. Timely hitting and great pitching.
  5. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 01:04 PM) Not to rain on our parade bu it wasn't all that good of a job by Reed. It seems to always be a nail biter when he comes in lately but I gues the silver lining is he doesn't panic usually and give up that big hit with runner son - usually that is. Great job by Peavy to settle in after a couple shaky opening innings. He gave up 1 hit and got 4 outs in the inning.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 01:00 PM) Nice use of the change-up there, Addison. Got him off your fastball. I think I might prefer bringing back Bobby Jenks as closer. Really. He gives up one hit and struck out a guy (but the ump blew the call) but it was a rollercoaster. Good lord, unless someone is consistently getting 1-2-3 innings, they suck on this site.
  7. Sucks that the club has to waste an option, but I guess in theory, that wasted option shouldn't be that bad.
  8. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 08:53 AM) They are indeed pushing Quintana to next Wednesday for extra rest. LAA- Humber, Floyd, Liriano KC- Peavy, Sale, Quintana Really glad the Sox are moving Q. He's tired and the extra rest should be beneficial.
  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 12:47 PM) His agent? The dude won't come out of f***ing games. I agree with that. Guy is ballsy and will never leave, but sometimes, you as a team need to do what you need to do to protect him and ensure he can keep it up. I realize he's a bulldog and works out, etc, and we hope that his body can handle this, but given the past couple years, he is in unchartered waters from a workload perspective. We should be treating him like we do Sale (not as extreme, but the club should be highly cognizant and giving him the ocassional extra rest). At least with this semi 6 man rotation, the club will be able to give Peavy an extra day from time to time (and has done a pretty good job doing such already this year).
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 12:45 PM) I looked it up earlier. He is #3 at just over 109 pitches per game. How does that make sense. He hasn't had a full season in years and we are riding him into the ground. I'm amazed his agent hasn't griped. Its a tribute to the type of gutsy player he is, but its also stupid and if I were his agent I'd be pissed cause the Sox are really pushing him in a contract year. I know the Brewers did it with CC, but there is a lot of money at stake (plus I happen to want a productive Peavy down the stretch and the more we do this, the more I wonder how fresh he'll really be). And if he's not effective/productive as our veteran leader, this team is in trouble.
  11. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 12:42 PM) The big thing is pinch running for Paulie, moves Youkilis to first (where he was a GG), Morel to 3rd. Excellent point.
  12. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 12:39 PM) Exactly. 2B defense can be filled with whomever the utility infielder is. In a pinch (due to injury) you can always stick Morel there and morel is a nice upgrade at 3rd late in games (since youk isn't a gold glover). Additionally, late in the game, the Sox aren't replacing Alexei or Becks due to injury, so I think if you do have a guy that can occasionally spell those guys off the bench (utility guy) then you don't need Hudson. He's never coming in, unless someone is hurt, where as Morel is a major upgrade defensively over Youk or Hudson.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 12:38 PM) Maybe Myers to face Willingham and Thornton to face Morneau and Doumit. It better be Reed.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 12:37 PM) If he's healthy, I'm sure Morel is up if only for late inning defense in September. Exactly. 2B defense can be filled with whomever the utility infielder is. In a pinch (due to injury) you can always stick Morel there and morel is a nice upgrade at 3rd late in games (since youk isn't a gold glover).
  15. How many pitches did Jake finish at? He must be one of the most worked pitchers in the game this year. Its freaking disgusting, given his injury history. I will tip my cap to the Peavmeister (and I do realize he's had a few extra days of rest, but man, he must lead the league in starts (along with Verlander) with 115+ pitches).
  16. QUOTE (Caesar @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 12:12 PM) Hudson is brutal. Release him please. He really is awful. He can't even play SS, so I really don't get the big point in having him on the roster. I think the club should pick Font up as the super utility guy and then bring Morel up if he gets his swing back.
  17. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 11:49 AM) I know one thing, if Gordon Beckham was hitting second and struck out after a lead off double, he would have been skewered on this board. Youkilis does it, and not a peep. 5 out his last 40. Fair points, however, Youk has a history of doing the little things offensively and getting guys over, etc. Having good at bats. Beck's doesn't have that history and while Youk is going through a slump, he's still batting .245 with a .364 OPS and a >.800 OPS in 30 games with the Sox (22 rbi's total) despite being in the midst of a pretty bad slump. He'll come out of it.
  18. Font seems like a great upgrade over Hudson.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 10:56 AM) Peavy has 20 quality starts in 21 tries....crazy. Guess the only one he didn't was the game he led DET 6-0 and he and Ohman gave the lead away at USCF. That is pretty crazy.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 10:37 AM) Peavy hasn't looked overly sharp for a long time now. The insane pitch counts have to be catching up to him. I hate Valencia, he seems to always perform well against the Sox. Ventura has had him throw too many pitches, too often. I haven't been happy with the way he's managed pitch counts on some of our guys.
  21. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 09:34 PM) Can we stop using the term fab five? I mean congrats to them but that's a nickname that has clearly been used. Unlike the other fab 5, this team delivered in the clutch.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 1, 2012 -> 07:59 AM) To me it is on Cooper. He gets a free two, or maybe three, month look at the guy. If Coop wants to resign him at that point, I try to resign him. Its tough. I go by what Coop has seen on film. If he thinks he has identified some things that will work, I try signing him to a favorable deal now. If he kicks ass down the stretch, he might have priced himself out. Hopefully he does do exactly that.
  23. Get well Danks. And ptatc, thanks for all of this great info!
  24. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 31, 2012 -> 09:05 PM) Extend Liriano! I hope the Sox are talking about it. He's got a great arm and if you could get him to go 3 years at a fair price, it would be great. Maybe even go 2 years if he'd prefer a shorter deal where he can prove himself and then sign a big fat deal somewhere else.
