  1. Trading Thompson would be a huge mistake. His value isn't what his upside is. I'll be pissed if he's dealt at the deadline. He's got all kinds of upside and has made big strides each year. I know people are waiting for him to just explode, but he's steadily improved. Next year he'll get to play in AA at a pretty young age still and athletically he's silky smooth.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 01:06 PM) I think so....can't stress how important it is to keep Youk and AJ, and how indifferent whatever happens with Thornton, Crain and Floyd. Ideally, we keep two guys like Liriano for half the price of what we'd be on the hook for with Gavin. We have that money coming off the books from Peavy and THEORETICALLY an insurance payout from Danks, plus we'll be swimming in revenue the last 30 or so home games with key series against opponents like the Yankees, Angels, Tigers and even A's. Isn't Floyd at like 10M. That is pretty cheap and you aren't going to see Liriano signing for 5M, imo. Maybe, but probably more like 7-8M.

I think Youk is a good bet to get a 1 to 2 year deal worth 6-8M per year. He won't get 12M just because of the injury issues the past couple years and the fact that his body as a whole is the type that should break-down quickly. Given the hole at 3B, that is the type of deal that I'd support.
  4. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 01:09 PM) cant be that bad: He lost the closer's job in May, but has pitched to a 1.96 ERA with twice as many strikeouts as walks since the beginning of June. His fastball averages 95.2 mph, according to FanGraphs. He has a big league arm and is the type of reliever I'd like in a full-season. But he has flaws and with Myers, Reed, Crain, and Nate Jones, I'm not about to give up a top 5 prospect in our system for a reliever who I believe walks at the end of the year.
  5. I wonder if Morel is being used as a chip. Not sure the value, but if his back is better, someone might take a chance on him. Could even be the type of guy you flip for a younger solid utility guy.
  6. Trading a guy like Mitchell, etc, for League is just stupid. This would be a bad move.
  7. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:33 PM) Jon Morosi is saying the Mariners want a bat for League. Would you trade Carlos Sanchez? edit: League's WHIP is 1.444. Meh... Absolutely not. Sanchez is a very good middle infield prospect and trading him for a mediocre reliever would be stupid. Kenny's beauty this year has been the fact that he's gone bargain shopping and filled needs without giving up major chips. Trading Sanchez for League would be stupid. What is League's contract situation? I like League's stuff, but I'm not trading a really good minor leaguer for him.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:56 PM) Please. Danks go through five seasons without a significant injury. Prior go through one. They aren't even close to the same. But if you look at the injuries. Prior had nothing they could find, but he just lost the ability to pitch. Some similarities from a medical perspective. I will feel much better when Danks is on the mound looking like Danks (solid 3 ERA, etc).
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:55 PM) I don't think 6 years at $100 million would have been out of the question. We'll never know, but thats more money then Weaver and CJ Wilson, both of whom are better pitches (albeit, Weaver took a ridiculous hometown discount). I suppose he could have gotten Buehlre money, depending on the upside teams saw in Danks. Either way, he'd have gotten paid very well, but I'm sure he's incredibly happy he signed that extension.
  10. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:51 PM) Who are the crappy veterans I've been advocating? I don't want Nate Jones pitching in a meaningful situation for the Sox in a pennant race. Is that really that outrageous? Yea, it is. You want a perfect bullpen and expect guys to get people all every situation. The reality is that doesn't happen. The reality is, Jones has been an above average reliever, yet you continously whine and complain about him and countless others. For god sakes your busy yacking how Pierre would be more beneficial to the Sox then Viciedo, which is just insane. I realize you are rooting for the Sox and are a big fan, but more often then not, you seem to have vendettas against certain players no matter what there performance indicates. You also seem to be one of the many individuals who doesn't have an appreciationi (and there are plenty of people that fit this bill) for something called development. Thank the lord that Ventura gets it cause this team wouldn't be where it was without its young players (and the passion that they bring and I think the mix of youth and veterans is what has given the Sox a good clubhouse and this never quit attitude that was non-existent during most of Guillen's years).
  11. QUOTE (docsox24 @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 08:01 AM) I mentioned back in June that this has been the plan all along. Expect some ten day off stretches Liriano should help the Sox protect Q and Sale, which is important. The way these guys have pitched, if they can maintain something even similar to that in there career, the Sox are really in business.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:40 PM) The market said otherwise. Danks would have been one of the top three pitchers on this FA market, and would have been a hundred million dollar contract, sans the shoulder problems. I don't think he'd have gotten 100 million, but he'd have gotten more then he signed with the Sox for, imo. Albeit, thats why you take the money, cause had he waited, he'd have lost out on a lot of money (no one would be giving him a big contract following this year).
  13. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:41 PM) Yep, beginning to remind me of Mark Prior Its tough too cause he has a pretty low impact delivery and has never really had any arm issues, so his injury would have been hard to predict. Albeit, most good starters are going to have a serious arm injury at least once in there career. You just hope its the type that has a favorable recovery period. I just don't get it given how many clean scans he had (until they finally saw the slight tear in the scalpia or whatever the hell it was). As a whole everyone made the injury sound very minimal.
  14. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 07:04 AM) It would be awesome for Floyd to boost his trade value with a dominating performance vs the Rangers today, the Sox took Feldman down for 4 earned in 6 innings on the 4th of July. GO SOX!!!!! Sox aren't trading Floyd unless its a major haul. Like a Floyd, Beckham and more for a Josh Johnson (and I have no idea why Florida would do that). Floyd is one of the Sox better starters and despite people's constant b****ing, his careerr numbers are pretty damn solid (especially when you factor in the AL and the hittersp ark he spends time in). He's also been pretty good this year. Albeit, I don't like this match-up in the heat against the Rangers. Oh and his option is very very affordable for next year. If you trade him, you deal him this off-season for a cost controlled younger pitcher (or in a package for one).
  15. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:37 PM) Jones isn't useless, as you're going to need relievers who can give you some innings in games you're not winning. Right now, you don't want to use Myers/Crain/Thornton/Reed in games you're trailing. Thats where Jones and Santiago are so valuable. They can go a few innings (and continue to develop) and hold you in games without burning the rest of the pen. Which is huge, cause it keeps the 3 vets fresh and ensures Reed is ready for the bigger games. And despite everyone' incessant b****ing about Reed, he throws a mid 90's fastball with pretty good command. He is still developing the breaking stuff and needs to better learn to change the eye-level but he's going to be a pretty good reliever (2 good pitches and very good command for a young reliever; opponents BAA is pretty low too). And he has a nice downward plane thanks to his delivery.
  16. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:35 PM) He's 26 years old, he may be very good. At the moment he's useless to a team in a pennant race. There are things to like about Liriano, but durability is not one of them. His starts are going to tax the pen and another RH reliever is necessary. I'll be stunned if they don't get one before the deadline. How is he useless. Outside of a couple horrific outings, he's been well above average. And I got news for you, relievers can be good with a differing ERA irregardless. The guy is valuable and a lot of teams would love having him. I don't even know what to think, if it were up to you this team would have a lot less young talent and a lot more crappy veterans.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:35 PM) With Jones, I'd like to see him get a few games where he can start an inning and have more margain for error. Despite his 99 mph fastball, I think his best pitch is his slider. However, he's unable to use it as much if he comes in with runners on base. His change-up has surprised me as well. Given where he was a few years ago, he's made a lot of progress and I expect him to continue to progress. Stuff is great and he's cost controlled, which is beautiful given how expensive relievers can be.
  18. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:20 PM) I'd say the Angels are happy with Jeff Weaver. Weaver signed a deal at a major discount though. His contract is a huge bargain. No idea what will happen long-term, but major bargain. Another major thing to remember is payroll constraints. If you room for a 120-150M payroll, you can afford to overpay at times, if said player puts you over the top or fills a major need that you can't fill from within.
  19. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 11:30 AM) Ya, this. As long as you are willing to develop and invest in pitching at the minor league level (and have a coach like Coop that can help fix talented guys that haven't made it), you really don't have to invest long-term. Young pitchers are under your control a pretty long time before they truly become free agents (sure they'll have a couple big arbitration years, but again, it keeps you from going long-term). Then you deal them a year before and move along. It can be done consistently and you can contend, its just a matter of putting a focus on it. That is exactly how I'd handle it. Draft pitching pitching and more pitching. From a position perspective, its a little safer going long-term so I'd pick and choose who I'd go long-term with and be willing to do it. In a year where I need a big name pitcher, I can acquire one with a couple years left on a deal and go that route (in a put over the top type of move).
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 28, 2012 -> 06:14 PM) You could see this coming for weeks. I hope he makes a miraculous comeback, but its certainly not looking good. What is surgery going to do? I thought everything was structurally okay? I'm really confused at what is going on. All kinds of reports of no issues. Is Danks going to go all Scott Kazmir and just fall off the face of the earth? I'm getting worried that might be the case. Especially with it being a shoulder injury, those are things many people never recover from. I hope I'm wrong. It really sounds like no one has a clue what is going on.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 12:13 PM) Throw away Jones' worst 3 outings covering 1 1/3 innings and his ERA is 1.56 his other 40 1/3 with a K an inning. Totally useless. And thats a pretty good number of innings for a rookie reliever too. I find it hillarious how ignorant some of the posters are. Reading game threads can be pathetic (as I think you pointed out a couple nights ago Dick). Often times I'll be checking in and if I didn't know any better Sox were down 10+ runs. Instead I go check and its either like a 1 or 2 run deficit or the Sox are up.
  22. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 29, 2012 -> 10:47 AM) They need a RH reliever as badly as they needed another starter. Crain is just not a guy who can pitch two days in a row and be effective. It puts a ton of strain on the rest of the righties and as we know Jones is useless. Jones is not useless. Dude is solid and will be very good. Guys are going to give up runs, it happens. And he's bound to struggle as he gets there, thats why acquiring Myers was so important. He's been there and done it and when you add in Crain (who is getting better and more into baseball shape again) and you are in a much better place. Sox just need a utility guy. I'll take this team and think they have as good a shot as almost any team in baseball at making a deep run. On a sidenote, in terms of Liriano, I like this deal, mainly because they didn't give up any A prospects and with the young guys in our rotation, we could use an extra arm. Plus, Liriano has been damn good the past 10 starts (with 1 bad start in that mix). His main problem is command which Coop has historically been good at. Personally, I hope the Sox find a way to resign Liriano and put him in the rotation for next year along with Sale/Danks and Q. That said, not many rotations have 4 southpaws. Either way, this gives the Sox plenty of options and if they get into the post-season, Liriano is the type of guy that could be a pretty sick out of the pen in the post-season.
  23. Hell of a win. Sale battled and the Sox did a great job battling back after trailing 4-1 early. Great win and another testament to the resiliency of this squad. Love this team. Keep on winning!!!
  24. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 07:51 PM) I hope Nate Jones isn't on this team after the trade deadline. Overreact much. Come on.
  25. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 27, 2012 -> 08:04 PM) didn't he just skip a start during the all-star game break. missed that sunday game in chicago. Threw one inning in KC and then didn't pitch again until Saturday in KC. Personally, I think the lack of use, gave him a bit of a dead arm as his body is readjusting to the workload. Similar to how pitchers typically go through a dead-arm period early in spring when they start to push themselves again.
