Sox versus Yankees August 1, 2009 game thread
QUOTE (tommy @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 04:29 PM) What's your take on his future position? 3B ? 2B? SS? Alexei is the shortstop until he's traded so I'm going to say 3B. I say that because I ultimately feel that Viciedo ends up in LF or 1B and I think that is the reason Brandon Allen was ultimately exendable.

He's ridiculous. The talk around baseball circles is that most people believe that Gordon will add muscle over the next few years and turn into a 30 HR guy with ridiculous double numbers. He has a shot to be the premiere 3B in the league. He isn't going to hit 40 or 50 hr's but he's going to do everything really really well.

Fields v. Getz
Assumptions like that happen when people don't realize adjustment periods are necessary. Getz will never make the hallf of fame and will probably never be an all star but he has the ability to be a very good baseball player and a very very valuable asset to a good offensive club (he'll make a great 9 hitter who has the ability to hit for average, draw walks, bunt, handle the bat, steal bases, and play average to slightly above average defense). Yea, I like Getz a lot. Than again Getz was one of hte few guys in the Sox system that I was saying nice things about the past couple years.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 04:20 PM) I think its because the White Sox have already figured they are going to lose before the game starts. I think that magnifies things and it is why they play even worse there. In general they will struggle in domes (and it is why I hope Tampa doesn't make it) but as a whole they play even worse in the Twinkie dome because of the mental aspect.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 04:16 PM) Baseball is wacky. We are owning the Yankees (albeit at home). We can't do squat with the Twins. The Yankees routinely bombard the Twins. Go Sox! Finish this one off and don't play the Sunday lineup tomorrow. The Twins own us in the dome. It is because we don't play the style of baseball condusive to success on that sort of surface. The Sox have played very well thus far against the better teams in baseball and it is why I believe the SOx will win the world series if they make the playoffs (that and our rotation).

I want to see Quentin crush it into the RF bleachers. A nice OPPO HR combined with what he's been doing the past couple games would be awesome.

Why did we trade Nick Swisher?
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 04:05 PM) And I’d point out the statistical aberration thing. Talking Swisher is like talking politics. You’re never going to change the other guys mind. Agreed, you have the stat guys and the more old school baseball guys. I side with the baseball guys and I'll never agree with the other side. My eyes don't lie, he stinks. The fact that he was a fan of the powdered sugar is just one of the many reasons I think he's a f***ing loser.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 04:11 PM) I read where Kotsay was shocked the Sox picked him up. He thought he was done. The Sox like him because he can come off the bench and give real good at bats. I think he'll be a pretty valuable high character bench player. If only he could still play CF defense like he used to. I'm biased though, Kotsay is a Fullerton alum just like me so I'll always love him

Why did we trade Nick Swisher?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 01:08 PM) Swisher's OBP this year is .367, Pods's is .354. That agrees with your point, but then I can point out Swisher's .332 OBP last year. Or the fact that he was a loser in the clubhouse and can't hit for any sort of average.

Why did we trade Nick Swisher?
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 09:35 AM) One thing Swisher hasn't improved on, is hitting in the clutch. He has a BA/RISP of .219 and a clutch factor of -4.0. But this season, he's hitting far less line drives and more flyballs, and that's translating into more power at the new Yankee Stadium. I still think though, if he ever wants to get back to where he was rated a few seasons ago, that average of his needs to get back to around the .270-.280 mark, and I don't know whether he's capable of that anymore. It is because he's not a good hitter, period.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:56 PM) For all the crap Getz gets around here, he's probably in the top 5 for ROY voting. And he brings something very unique to the Sox lineup. A guy that can handle the bat, run the bases, bunt, etc. He's going to be a very good 9 hole hitter in the AL. Oh and he's pretty darn solid at 2B. Him and Beckham have been huge additions to this team that really make this offense more diverse.

Tigers get Washburn
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 11:18 AM) I remember when Washburn was with the Angels, he was described as a poor man's Mark Buerhle. I remember having to watch numerous Wasbhurn starts. I can't stand him, don't like him, but its a solid pick-up for the Tigers. He's a league average starter though historically and thats about it.

QUOTE (Disco72 @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:43 PM) I really don't like this move, but I guess he's our 2nd / situational lefty. He's looked awesome against the 3 guys he's faced thus far. If Ozzie uses him right he can be pretty effective and since the Sox carry 7 relievers regularly you can afford to have a guy that is a pure LOOGY.

QUOTE (BlackBetsy @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:34 PM) Danks isn't a #4 on most teams right now. He's a #3 on the Yankees, #3 on the Red Sox, #2 / #3 on the Angels this year. He's at worst #3 for the Sox (I think he's pretty equal with Floyd overall but Floyd has been hotter the last few months) and will only go down to #4 because the Sox will have two legitimate #1s for the first time since who knows when (Peters / Horlen?). I agree with that.

Sox versus Yankees August 1, 2009 game thread
By the way, I'm not hating on Danks. He's a ridiculously good #4 and he's learning how to pitch still. He's a really good one too with an upside of a #2 as well. I give Floyd a little bit of a notch and right now I think Floyd is better but he's also older. I f***ing love the fact that we have both of them on the southside!!! Combine that with Buehrle/Peavy and what I expect will be Hudson next season (maybe a veteran stop-gap until Hudson takes over) and we are talking about a team that if the rotation is healthy, should contend every single season.

QUOTE (Felix @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:17 PM) Your man-love for Floyd is ridiculous. You got to give me credit though. I was the one of the few who kept saying how dumb the talk was about moving him. I've always said you need to look at stats and what your seeing and when Floyd was really struggling earlier in the year I was seeing a guy that was getting dealt a lot of bad luck and really wasn't that far off from being his real good stuff. He's learned how to cut his fastball a bit, has two variations of plus curves, and has a surprisingly good changeup and to me it is the change-up that will be the key to him eventually turning into a very good #2 starter.

Sox versus Yankees August 1, 2009 game thread
QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 03:16 PM) I love Floyd, but does he take care of business the way Danks just did when he gets himself into a jam? Granted, Carlos helped him out a LOT, but still. 2.34 ERA over his last 13 starts. And Floyd doesn't get him into those type of jams as much but I remember him pitching himself out of plenty of jams. Floyd consitently gets deeper into games though and that is because he pitches more to contact while still putting improving K numbers. He's also gone 2 straight months (June/July) where he posted a sub 1 WHIP.

This is why Danks doesn't go deep into games. And it is why he isn't as good as Gavin.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 1, 2009 -> 01:40 PM) Q is hitting the ball hard every time-out. I'm telling you, the Sox have picked up an MVP and a Cy Younger cause Quentin looks back and last year Quentin was the MVP when he was on the field.

SN: Scouting Report On Nunez
Nunez Up; Lillibridge Down SoxNet Scouting Report: Nunez is a quality relief prospect, who has a chance at developing into a good set-up men. He features a plus fastball (94-96) which he combines with an average-to-good slider. The key to Nunez success at the major league level will be his slider. His slider can be a good pitch when he stays on top of his delivery and if he throws it with consistency we'll see him in the White Sox pen for the next couple years.
