  1. QUOTE (fathom @ May 8, 2009 -> 03:30 PM) Ugh, stop finding ways to put Lillibridge in the freaking lineup. Alexei to CF makes too much sense for it to actually happen. You might see Alexei in CF, but I think we'll probably see Nix in CF a bit too (short-term) as the Sox realize how good his bat might be. Defensively he's legit too. He might be a .280-.300 hitter with 20 HR power from an up the middle position (SS/2B/CF). Everyone might ask me, well tahn how did the Sox pick him up so easily, and I'd say that his career was languishing and he happened to make an adjustment just prior to joining the Sox last season and since than his career looks back to when he was one of the better infield prospects in baseball.
  2. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 8, 2009 -> 03:05 PM) I'm a big fan of Rex Brothers, but I think he might be a top 10 pick come next month. He's all over the boards but I've seen some places say he'll go supplemental, others saying he's a lock to go top 10. Regardless it seems like he's moving to be a lock to go top 15, but the Sox aren't too far out of that range that maybe they get lucky. He's definately putting it all together at the right time though. A month ago and he's probably still a borderline first rounder, more likely a second rounder.
  3. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ May 8, 2009 -> 02:32 PM) Someone should do a profile on LSU's Jared Mitchell, he's a really intriguing outfielder, potential 5 tool-er with speed to burn (also plays WR at LSU). He strikes out a little too much but does walk at a decent rate and could be available when we pick. If you know a bit about him, how about giving it a shot?
  4. BA mentioned him in a piece today:
  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 8, 2009 -> 09:23 AM) Your C description sounds like exactly what they did with Dubler, but he struggled mightily at Bristol, before turning it on a bit at the end. I was thinking he'd be in Kanny this year, since there is no real C prospect on that squad, but I guess they think Kevin needs more Rookie ball work after last year's cold start. I assume he goes to GF. Not sure how catching prospects came into the convo, but I really want Bailey if he's there with our 2nd pick. He's out for the year but anytime you can get the top prep catching prospect in what is considered a strong catching prospect draft I consider it a good thing. And this is because I don't necessarily think its a bad idea to have a 2nd top catching prospect in the system, given that we really don't know if Flowers will be able to stick.
  6. QUOTE (scenario @ May 7, 2009 -> 08:09 PM) Lost in the shadow of the Barons' offensive performance is the fact that Omogrosso is having himself a VERY nice outing. I wonder if the Sox are going to actually consider him a starter. I was alway told that they felt he was a reliever and I personally believe that is where his upside was. However, him, like Matt Long, were put into the rotation so they could continue to develop there other pitches as ideally that will make them far better relievers long term. Long hasn't panned out as quick as people had expected (the org loved him when they drafted him), but he's still a guy to keep an eye on cause out of the pen he has a mid 90's fastball.
  7. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 7, 2009 -> 05:39 PM) Are the Angels planning on creating a new stadium? (this is a serious question) Because my idea would make it a requirement that all new stadiums have a retractable dome. And you could make an exemption for places that rarely have rain and bad weather. Nope. They rennovated there stadium a few years back and while the actual stadium is one of the older ones in baseball, I haven't heard any talks of them building a new facility.
  8. Oh and he's second in college baseball in strikeouts, behind Strausburg.
  9. Rex Brothers out of Liscomb. Yep, he's coming out of a small school but the guy has been flying up draft boards. He was thought of as a top 5 round draft choice entering the season, but since than he's added velocity. He previously pitched in the 91-93 MPH range but is now pitching in the 93-94MPH range, touching 96. What is more impressive is what the added velocity has done to what was already a plus slider. His slider is in the 86-87MPH range with lots of late break, which is exactly what you want to see out fo a slider as it will get lots of swings and misses. The other big thing that has Brothers shooting up draft boards is his improved command. In fact, a few scouts have been quoted as saying they haven't seen a lefty with a better arm in the draft and he still projects as a guy that might be there when the Sox pick (given the small school reputation). But he also has that laid back attitude that I think the Sox will love. His manager is often quoted as saying how humble of a guy he is and that you'd never know he was about to be a millionaire. In fact, he seems like a power-armed vesrion of Buehrle (attitude wise). Right now, aside from Scheppers and Crow, I would put Brothers as the guy I would love the Sox to pick. Two plus pitches and a developing change-up all coming from the left side of the plate. His frame isn't huge, 6-1, 205, but he has a very strong lower-body with huge thighs (a big plus for a pitcher). Bottom line, this is the type of guy that could develop into an ace and would be the perfect compliment in the rotation to lefties like Danks/Buehrle. 10. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ May 8, 2009 -> 03:04 AM) According to ESPN's Jason Churchill, Kentucky left-hander James Paxton has chosen the Scott Boras Co. as an advisor. I guess that's a name to strike off the list, I would have liked him with one of our first two picks. If the Sox take a lefty, a name I really like is Rex Brothers (see profile I just posted). Paxton has a tremendous fastball thoguh. He has been sliding down draft boards a bit and having Boras might hurt him more, but he hits the upper 90's.
  11. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 8, 2009 -> 06:49 AM) Scheppers was coming off of Tommy John, and wanted high-first round money. Yep, prior to hurting his arm he was a consensus lock to go top 5 and was a guy I would have loved the Sox to take a reach on had he slid to there 3rd round selection (since the Sox had no 2nd round pick). But the Pirates took a shot on him and it was a great decision by the Pirates org, even if it didn't work out.
  12. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 7, 2009 -> 05:41 PM) I'm just saying have that thread for reference. In a couple of weeks, we might have 30 of this threads. So instead of sifting throughout the previous couple of pages to look for a certain player thread, you can just click on the players link in the main prospect thread. Don't worry, scenario already has that thread up.
  13. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 8, 2009 -> 06:35 AM) He was traded for "future considerations". Lame. I've followed this guys since the draft, and I really feel like he's got some value, probably as a future utility player, but maybe more. It was flabbergasted that we traded him for basically nothing. My only theory is that the Sox middle infield in the mid-minors was just so damn crowded, that when MIL called looking for one, they said OK, to make room for guys like Beckham and Escobar. Apparently, we should have just moved him to first base. It was a numbers game and the organization made a move that benefited Miranda. He had no chance getting at bats in our system. Not a knock on him, more a compliment to the middle infielders already in our system.
  14. QUOTE (Paint it Black @ May 7, 2009 -> 10:56 PM) No, this stuff is for losers. How about actually beating KC, that helps a lot more than some silly ass bean ball war that leads to suspensions/fines/and embarrassment. Bulls*** it is. Talk to any old school pitcher and they'll tell you the importance of protecting your hitters and pitching inside. I was taught at a young age there is nothing wrong with hitting someone, as long as its because your protecting your teammates or more importantly establishing the inside of the plate. And I know I hit a lot of guys during all my years of pitching (despite having great control my entire, short-lived, career).
  15. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ May 8, 2009 -> 06:46 AM) In the post game press conference that I was watching and missed the Hawks first goal, Guillen said that Nix would get another day at short then they would reevaluate the situation. I think Ramirez is going to be staring down the barrell of the Juan Uribe role really soon. Ramirez will be in CF. The guy was fabulous last year. Fabulous. You don't give up on that after a month of the season. That said, if the right offer came along, knowing Beckham is in the wings, I would trade Ramirez for a young starting pitcher in a heart beat.
  16. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 7, 2009 -> 11:13 PM) Jayson Nix, a prodigy with the glove, and not too shabby with the bat. Nix has only been up a short time, but the f***er has won me over. He looks good, real good.

QUOTE (BobDylan @ May 7, 2009 -> 04:57 PM) http://grammartips.homestead.com/than.html It's gone on for too long, man! And it will go on forever
  18. QUOTE (G&T @ May 7, 2009 -> 04:50 PM) Well if it's that cheap, then it's tough to lose. At worst, she doesn't like it and you didn't waste a lot of money. At best, she wears a bikini you want her to wear. Of course, this analysis changes if she's the type to get pissed when you buy her a style she doesn't like and it's the wrong size.... Good luck with that. She's never gotten pissed at me yet. Afterall, how could you get pissed at the owner of Soxtalk :shrug
  19. I'd love to see Crow on the Sox, but I highly doubt he'd fall that far. Plus he'd be stupid not to sign this time around.
  20. So I'm going to temp fate this weekend and buy my girlfriend a bathing suit. This could really blow up in my face, given how picky she is with crap like that. But I can get like a super nice one for 5 bucks at an employee only sale. I guess I should say Bikini.
  21. QUOTE (BearSox @ May 7, 2009 -> 03:11 PM) I agree. I think God hates baseball because usually the first 1-2 months for baseball, the weather is crappy. It's either bitter cold, or non stop rain. But I don't see what you can do except maybe those sail things Balta was talking about. No way minor league teams will start building domed stadiums. However, as I stated the other day, all new ballparks in the MLB should be required to be built with a retractable roof. I think it's beyond idiotic that all the new stadiums that have come up over the past couple of years, and most of them that are coming up shorty are all open. Minnesota is having an open stadium! Are you kidding me? You think early April Games are bad in Chicago, they will likely be much worse in Minnesota. Why should the Angels pay something obscene like an extra 100 million in construction costs to have a retractable dome when they've had something like one rainout in the past 20 years. Bottom line, it costs a lot to do that. So if there was some cheap alternative, like a giant tarp, fine, otherwise, it just happens to be that its a cost benefit analysis for that particular franchise.
  22. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 7, 2009 -> 03:03 PM) Anyone who is getting upwards of 30 on this board will surely agree with me that is isnt really the competition that is harder as you age, but the recovery time. PED's for alot of those guys eliminated those aches and pains from day to day which allows you those extra hits to go from .250 to .300 on the season. The extra strength built up, flexibility and recovery is what has allowed some players who SHOULD have naturally fallen off in their mid 30's extend their careers at the same level until 40. f***, I'm 26 and have been playing basketball three times a week for the past few years and I freaking hurt a hell of a lot more now the next day or two after playing than I did three years ago. I can't imagine the way it is when your in your mid to late 30's. And before someone asks, no, Its not because I'm in worse shape now than I was three years ago. I'm 6ft, 155 lb's and would not be considered by anyone to be overweight or out of shape. I wouldn't be called a freak of nature athlete either, but I have a lean, relatively athletic build, although I do not have a muscular upper body (lower body is strong as rocks, despite my jacked up knee).
  23. On a sidenote, I'm going to try and do a few of these a week leading up all the way to the draft, that way a lot of us will have an idea of most of the top candidates that might be there with some of the Sox early selections. I encourage others (BearSox, Scenario, Dan, whomever) to do more of the same, that way we have a nice informational database right here on Soxtalk.
  24. Trout appears to be a lock to go somewhere in the first. Some people have him rising into the top 15 range where others have him going in the first round or at least the supplementals. A lot can still happen but he's hit for a lot more power in his scout showcases this season and that had been the one draw-back on him.
  25. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 7, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) I just said he didn't look physically well...didn't mean to intimate something more insidious. Stanozolol Winstrol, Winthrop, Stromba Medical Use: Prescribed for hereditary angioedema, which causes episodes of swelling of the face, extremities, genitals, bowel wall, and throat. Performance-Enhancing Use: It builds strength and muscle mass with minimal bulk development. Preferred by pitchers who typically want stregth but not bulk. Side-Effects: Less damaging to ligaments than most anabolic steroids. Liver damage, acne, sterility, baldness, enlarged prostate, gynocomastia (development of breast tissue in males), virilization (development of male characteristics in women) Admitted or Implicated Players: Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, Rafael Palmeiro, Benito Santiago, Paxton Crawford, Ivan Rodriguez*, Juan Gonzalez* What does roiding and aids have to do with one another. You were saying Benito had aids, not that he was a roider.
