QUOTE (Steff @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 10:33 PM) Both. As for the attendance playing a role, I'm sure many here remember less than 10 years ago seeing 10K, and many times less, in the stands. We aren't as big a piece of the pie as we think. It depends on how they structure their incoming money, of course. It seems like they "counted on" more people after the playoff run of 2005. Of course, they would. It's extra cash straight down. But, I'm not sure that we've seen the kind of erosion of "discretionary spending" that businesses are going through now at any time in the last 20+ years. The effects there remain to be seen, I think.

QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 05:21 PM) I'm not going to get into every single player, but here's how I think the 5 most recent American League champions' DH players' value are compared to Thome: Thome Thome Thome Thome = David Ortiz (Both useless, neither can play on the field anymore) Thome This is one of the most worthless posts I have read on here in quite some time (outside of the filibuster.) I know it's your opinion and you're entitled... but ouch, you (IMO) have not a clue if you really think this. -
QUOTE (Steff @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 07:29 PM) Tickets have been in my family for almost 40 years and never once have they gone down. And I don't agree with "a lot" of empty seats either. Renewal was near 97% again this year for ticket holders (full and split) so not too much of a change. And if we happen to catch a spark the place will be packed again with ease. The Sox have seen much tougher times. Have faith. Do you mean by that ownership issues, or just the overall economy? Or both? It's hard to run anything well right now, especially "discrentionary spending" types of businesses... it's going to be interesting if things don't turn around soon.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 03:31 PM) Besides, taxpayer spending is ok, for health care, etc. but when it goes for "bailouts of businesses", it's bad! Yes, Kaperbole is back.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) Did he give the same rant about paying for your neighbor's $200 million bonus out of taxpayer funds? I'm sure he did, just for you since you're obviously the taxpayer gestapo.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 01:51 PM) For all the people having Obamagasm at the fact that Obama is now our President, a little present. http://kabukishojo.com/2009/02/13/no-japan...ly-loves-obama/ I'm sorry, that's just pathetic. And stupid. And I think I'm even more stupid for clicking on the link.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 01:58 PM) Really, I thought you supported the war in Iraq? Actions are more about the impact of the actions, not about how many are making them. When the actions are on a huge scale, they have to be stopped, even if it is only 1 or 2%. Hell we are at war with Iraq because 1 or 2% of the population acted in ways we disagreed with. Which is why I'm mostly a Democrat. That is a pretty lame argument Tex.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 11:55 AM) And that is what makes me a republican. I don't believe in penalizing 98% of the country for the actions of 1 or 2% of it. Amen. /waiting for the b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-ut Democrats don't do that blog after blog after blog links

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 12:17 AM) On the menu at Hooters, the Buffalo chicken sandwich with hot or 911 is good. As far as wings go, Wingstop is becoming a quick favorite. They opened up one in Downers and I hit it at least once a week lately. I think Wingstop started here in Dallas if I'm not mistaken. That's why I was surprised that they were up there. Their wings are good, but they are small. And their hot is not hot. At all. Their cajun wings are pretty good.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 10:55 AM) He sounds like the pointy-haired boss from Dilbert. Synergy! Out of the box! Bleeding Edge!!!!! Sounds like my old boss(es) at my former place of employment... except they didn't know what the f*** they were talking about only to make it sound good... oh wait, Dilbert, exactly. Except the lead one was a female, which made it worse.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) And the only correct answer, of course, is Pauly Shore. Or PeeWee Herman, that one eyed-monster.

QUOTE (BainesHOF @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 02:43 PM) I think I have a good idea for a website that I want to loosely look like this one. (FYI, my idea has nothing to do with the Sox, baseball or sports.) I know a lot about visiting and posting on sites, but I don't know much about what it takes to run one so I have a few general questions: - How much does it cost a month to run this site? - Is there a particular software program that I can buy to create a site like this that looks this good? - What's the best stategy to edit posts to keep them free from spam, profanity, racists comments, etc.? - What's the best way to handle legal issues associated with running a site when you're on a budget? - What's the best way to keep a site securely protected from hackers, viruses, etc.? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! If you're serious about getting something up, PM me, and I can help you.

Thome Felt Worn Down Near the End of Last Season, Feels Good Now

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 11:49 PM) He felt worn down near the END OF LAST SEASON as, you know, a 37 year old 18 year veteran who walked up to the plate over 600 times and has to workout like a madman throughout the season to stay in shape. He said nothing about the offseason, just that he feels good now. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/al...244246021_x.htm Now that's totally different then what originally got posted. This is fine, to me. -

QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 11:13 PM) Any baseball fan knows that the game is every bit as mental as it is physical. In addition to working out all the time during the season and the travel (not to mention the actual games). These guys are watching film, working on their swing, and in the case of Thome, probably helping the younger guys out with some of the mental aspects of the game, teaching them what to look for with certain pitchers, hitters, teams, etc... There is definitely a mental drain that will take a toll on you after a while and you will get worn down. It's inevitable, I'm sure it doesn't help that he's much older and probably doesn't have the same spring in his step that he had when he was younger. I agree to an extent... however, if the mental part of the game is that tough, retire. And, winters (at least the first part) you should be taking a break from it to recharge. If he didn't, knowing it's getting tougher, again, retire. I am a Thome fan, but I just don't like seeing the mental excuses on day one of spring training. It sets a terrible tone for the rest of the year. -

Definitely Reagan. You know why? Because it led to the derangement we see today of the Democrat Party.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 08:08 PM) Roubini and Richardson argue in a WSJ op-ed today that the reason the market is plummeting since Geithner's speech is that Geithner strongly suggested that he was going to put an end to the free money train coming out of Washington. The problem is, the way I see it, this simply is not true.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 12:41 PM) I was thinking something like that - the city money for Chicago is still being worked out. Regardless of what you think of Daley, I'm sure it will take time to sift through the city's priorities to see where any money should go. And I don't think you are kidding, I am sure you are right. If Chicago gets the Olympics, there will suddenly be a bunch more money available for transit and other projects. For a group to hold on to the city of Chicago as long as they have, yes, I'm sure it will take time to, ahh, figure out where the money goes.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 18, 2009 -> 12:32 PM) 1031 projects in Illinois, for $3.1B.... and according to the stim site, not a SINGLE one in the city of Chicago? That can't be right. Wasn't that because DICK Daley wasn't going to disclose his list? Besides, Chicago will get its very own stimulus package when the olympics are announced. Think I'm kidding? I think not.
