  1. Did you all see where all the blather about anyone besides Clinton is all a smokescreen to get Clinton on the ticket? Since 25% of Clinton supporters are all pissed off and that's the only way to unify the party is to have her on the ticket, it's all hush hush until Thursday night - SPRINGGGGGG! Clinton it is! This is also supported by the notion that Obama has lost the backing of some Democrats according to national polls. I guess this was floated by Ralph Nader. BRING IT ON! Seriously, I hope that's not true.
  2. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 05:02 PM) But they don't check from state to state. Only within a state. But it's still fraud.
  3. PLAYOFFS? DID YOU SAY PLAYOFFS? WHAT THE ...
  4. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 11:54 AM) That's a slippery slope though. If you go back that far, you know what other country bin Laden was allied with? Does that alliance have anything to do with today? Not so much. The Cold War was a mess and a lot of what we did back then has backfired since. Iran, as an example. Sure. 1980 happens, USSR invades Afghanistan. We fund OBL. Iran/Iraq happens late in the 1980's... then OBL gets fed up in 1991 because US takes over Kuwait and Saudi, then that's when he turns against us. Simple, really.
  5. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 12:28 PM) Saddam was Sunni, but secular, and therefore an apostate regime by Bin Laden's standards. He pretty much felt the same about them as he felt about the Soviets. Right, I understand that. I do think, though, that there are common themes that run across that part of the world. I also realize that at the time AQ was forming, Iraq was an "ally" for trying to beat up Iran.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 10:42 AM) We've heard this same sort of accusation since about 2002 and have never seen any evidence for it. Maybe when you're dealing with religious fanatics, "enemy of my enemy is my friend" doesn't always work. MAYBE. No one knows, on either side. But, I do think that they both agree that the US doesn't need to be over there, and I'm sure there's money trails around.
  7. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 08:57 AM) No. They hated each other. And they are just about as welcome in Iran too, actually. To believe that is to completely misunderstand al-Qaida's basic mentality. There were some shady connections, yes, but not in the hilariously distorted way the Bush administration interpreted it, and not with AQ. I'm reading this Newsmax article from 4 years ago and it's kind of making me laugh. Well Iran and Iraq are Shia, and Bin Ladin is Sunni, right? Nonetheless, they do have a common enemy... and I have a feeling the money networks tend to run together, sects be darned.
  8. QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 06:39 AM) Well I will give the "lenient" answer and not the "conspiracy theory" answer (which I am closer to believing) - they believed the intelligence when they really should've known better. By the time they realized they'd blown it really bad, it was too late, and we had to follow through. We made our bed and had to sleep in it, can't leave a job half-assed. The "conspiracy theory" answer is my personal belief that his mind was already made up even before 9-11, he wanted all of his information to be able to support his decisions, and everything else was dismissed - I can somewhat attest to that, too. I wish I could go back and find some of the documents I wrote in 2002 to see how accurate they were. They probably could be re-worded to sound like news articles now. This is wrong because conclusions are drawn from intelligence, not vice versa which appeared to me to happen in this case. In any case this is the only rational explanation I can come up with that would cause senior government officials to say things in public like "Saddam was supporting bin Laden." "Supporting" is probably somewhat accurate - meaning - financially. He wasn't logistically supporting him. I'd be willing to bet there's some money trails there. But that wouldn't matter, because the American people would have never supported that, and they knew it.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 19, 2008 -> 08:18 AM) Hamilton has really gone into a second half swoon. Post all-star break he is hitting .279 with 7 homers and 19 RBI in 104 ABs. Compare that to Carlos who is .347 with 12 homers and 25 RBI in 98 ABs. His post ASB OPS is 1.238 compared to .913 for Hamilton. With the brutal Texas summer sapping the Rangers, and Kinsler being out, expect Hamiltons numbers to keep sliding. Except the Texas brutal summer has taken a vacation this week. We've gotten a ton of rain the last 5 days. Yesterday, it didn't get out of the 70's. Usually that means the 100's are over, so it won't be such a grind down here for those guys. Still, Hamilton's definitely sliding.
  10. I'd have to go find it but I predicted Biden about two months ago somewhere around here...
  11. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 06:25 PM) McCain to name VP on Aug. 29 He's going to OWN the weekend - nevermind that it's a holiday weekend. Stupid ass. Brilliant, NOT.
  12. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 04:03 PM) I can honestly say I voted for my candidate in 2004. You say the system is broken, but until you stop supporting candidates you don't like, these kinds of candidates will keep perpetuating the system. When my Congress shoots down any viable third party system with TOTAL bipartisan support to keep themselves in power, it's a little hard to be "supportive" of any of these assclowns. You end up voting for someone who is closer to your ideals but not in full support. I personally can't stand GWB (yes, I do think he gets a raw deal, which is why I defend him more often then not) but I voted for him because he was DEFINITELY (IMO) better then John Kerry. I wish I had a better candidate in 2004 to support. Same in 2000.
  13. There'd be a third airport pretty quick as well, I think. I'd love Chicago to get the games. I've not lived there (but close enough, I suppose) like most of you have, but I've been there enough to know what a boost it would give the city (see Atlanta as well).
  14. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 02:28 PM) Actually, no. Please don't vote. If you can't vote for your guy and are voting for someone to vote against someone else, please do the world a favor and don't fill out the ballot at all. Because our system will only fix itself when people support the candidates that are running rather than voting against someone else. That's pretty idealistic. There's not a single solitary candidate for president in my lifetime that I can say I voted FOR rather then voted AGAINST because the choices have simply sucked. Voted AGAINST Clinton 1992, 1996. Voted AGAINST the Goracle in 2000. Voted AGAINST Kerry in 2004. Because, simply put, the Re-pube-licans were better then the alternative IMO. If there were a "conservative Democrat", I'd vote for him/her tomorrow. And there's a few out there, you just never hear about them.
  15. QUOTE (SleepyWhiteSox @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 01:37 PM) I'm just here for the ladies... Is that you, Gage? Nice one...
  16. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 02:27 PM) whats not true? evangelicals and neo-cons didn't like G.W Bush? Well, now we get into those definitions. I do think "neo-con" might be the most overused and wrongly used description in forever, much like "liberal", but that's another topic.
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 02:24 PM) Vote. Please vote. Vote for whomever you think is the best available (which I realize may not be great), but still vote. Look at 3rd party candidates. Oh I'll end up voting - and probably for Bob Barr at this point... but I just hate the choices I have...
  18. QUOTE (mr_genius @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 01:11 PM) Did you talk to some guy who works in a mill? I like mill worker stories. just messing with you. but i know for a fact a lot of evangelicals and neo-cons really loved GW Bush. I didn't, but I never voted for him. That's just not true. I held my nose and voted for the guy... and I'm the same with McCain at this point, except it's worse - like I might not even vote. Which is sad, because I'm interested in the process, I just can't bring myself to like the guy at all...
  19. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 12:05 PM) So, has anyone else noticed that this big $7500 tax credit for new home buyers isn't a credit at all? Its a loan? Basically, the government says it wants to rescue citizens from a poor housing market and questionable loan practices, by engaging them in a questionable loan practice. f***ing brilliant. I read that the day the law was passed and about died laughing. These people are idiots.
  20. They will annonce tomorrow. Betcha. Tuesday is the "big news" day. It might even leak tonight.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 18, 2008 -> 08:59 AM) Bolt's 100 meter final was the single greatest domination of a race since Michael Johnson's 19.32 in the 200 meters in Atlanta. For me, THAT was the preformance of the Olympics. I just was sort of like, what the hell did I just see... he friggin' let up and BLEW the field away. Honestly, I think he was shocked himself that he was that fast, if you look at his reaction.
  22. I can actually sense that McCain's starting to shift things to himself a bit.
  23. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Aug 17, 2008 -> 07:12 PM) I think it's pretty sh***y that whoever deleted it never even bothered to message me seeing as it's unwritten and since it was 'written' before I even joined. Yikes. I don't think anyone meant anything by it.
  24. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 03:13 PM) If I'm contending that the problem is the idiots that won a 5/4 election in 2000 and their determination to use the government solely for the benefit of their friends and contributors rather than running the government well...then pointing at Katrina is not evidence to back up your case. That's evidence that backs up my case...that the problem we have is the group running it right now. You're joking, right? CONGRESS for the past 30 freakin' years could do something about this, and you're still crying about the 2000 election and how bad that's messed up the country? It says it all.
  25. QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Aug 15, 2008 -> 12:26 PM) Yesterday at the game during the 4th inning introduction of Ken Griffey Jr, the intro music was the "Soul Glow" jingle from "Coming to America." Nice.
