QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 24, 2008 -> 09:50 AM) If the minimum wage had been pegged to inflation when it was first created it'd be over $10 an hour now. It would be way more then that, depending on when you started the index.

Heard from Tex. He's been out of power at his house since 6 last night and it could be a while before he gets it back. Said that he had the "usual storm damage" but nothing major. And that he was heading back to Padre this afternoon to see the damage there. Sounds like he weathered it fairly ok.

Urlacher reaches deal with Bears
kapkomet replied to jackie hayes's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
That's just f***ed up. f***ED UP. I mean, he's worth more then that, but YOU signed the contract, you f***ing moron. I have no sympathy for dumbass athletes who make millions over the course of a contract whining about money. Instead of $10 million, he's getting $2.5 million over this deal (or so, you get the point, don't needle me with exact numbers). You're still incredibly rich playing a f***ing GAME. Go out and play it, then get paid. /rant -
QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 04:49 PM) technically it is not an aircard. My Sailing Director had the Verizon version and he was 10X faster then my cell phone using Edge technology from T-mobile. Basically I was using it along with a Java application to access my gmail account. ah, ok. I have the edge tech on my blackberry too but i use verizon. Got your text. Hope you're hanging in there.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 04:32 PM) My understanding is the NYT wanted fresh material, not a rehash of the previous year, which makes sense. You are correct, any time the GOP can make it seem like the media is screwing them, it is a win. The underlying suspicion is anything negative about REPs is made up and there is vast amounts of great positive stories that the media is sitting on and not printing. Of course when they publish an article on Dems, the suspicion is the opposite. Vast amounts of negative stuff isn't being reported and the positive is made up. The GOP would be fools to really want any changes from the media. The GOP has managed the media far better than any organization in history. And so have the Democrats. They know how to play that fiddle very well as well.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 05:36 PM) Coming in to tonight's action we're now tied with Washington for the 3rd most errors in the big leagues. Championship teams don't do that crap, IMO. They have to get that straightened out, and quick.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 03:47 PM) I have internet via my cell phone and use it like a modem. I can also text message you. I'm starting to realize this is serious. When TV images start to get closer and closer to where you are it becomes real. Now the areas that were hit this morning are clearing up and what they had is coming here. The weather station about 1/2 mile from me is reporting sustained 40+ mph winds. My car port is trembling like Mike Tyson in a spelling bee. 'k. I'll be around. I have an aircard, too. They work pretty well.

yea, 4 errors in the game, we're damn lucky they won. They need to knock that s*** off.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 04:19 PM) Hamilton is clearly getting the MVP, even though his team won't make the playoffs. The season's not over. Now, if Hamilton keeps up his current pace, then I have to agree with you. If he slacks off (which is likely, IMO because Texas hitters all die in late August/early September) then it's anyone's race.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 03:41 PM) Holy Crap. We're about an hour or two from the really nasty stuff. Already we have sustained 40 mph winds and rain. The heavy bands are about 20 miles away and from what I'm seeing on the local news, this will be a nasty evening and night. Already we've been losing power from time to time. If you can check in from time to time, please do so. Hopefully you have the batteries and the wireless card ready to go (those towers can take a beating unlike the land lines).

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 02:12 PM) http://newsbusters.org/blogs/mark-finkelst...fake-interviews I'm shocked. But it's ok, this guy has more teflon around him then anyone in recent history.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 12:33 PM) I'm still waiting for the headlines praising the speculators for pushing the price of crude oil down about $23 in the last week and a half, not to mention the gasoline futures down almost 60 cents, heating oil down 60 cents, and natural gas down nearly 4.000 points or about 33%!

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 11:46 AM) McCain DID just do it, no one cared. I guess that's more my point, McCain's been over there a lot, and has done a lot of things. Yet, Obama goes on this "tour" and the media orgasms themselves because of all the "good things he's saying and doing". Whatever.

QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Jul 23, 2008 -> 10:40 AM) I think its perfectly reasonable for political figures in our country who have a good possibility to become our head of state to meet with political leaders of other countries. So do I, but I don't like the spectator sport it's being made into.
-
McCain doesn't have to, because he's been there, done that. That's exactly why Obama DOES have to, because he has to show everyone he can. I'll just leave it at that.

You should yell at us when you go by to College Station.

QUOTE (sox4lifeinPA @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 05:28 PM) I really don't blame people for that. There's a need for churches to return to Acts 2 attitudes. My pastor pointed out the other day this line: Acts 2: 47 "enjoying the favor of all the people" ALL the people, meaning, those even on the outside of the church were impressed and respectful of the church. When was the last time THAT happened? I'm not asking people to BELIEVE what I believe, but I sure want people to be impressed with how we relate to the community and the good things we do for people. I want people to respect my church for the emphasis we place on serving others. The pastor at the church we attend always says "if you haven't been hurt by a church, you haven't been going long enough, because church is a HUMAN experience and there will be mistakes made, whether the minstry (of our church) wants them to be made or not". The question then becomes "can you live with the mistakes made, if they are something to be learned from and then to draw even better experiences in bringing people to God"? I'm glad it's not a check box church.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 04:25 PM) I understand, and there is a certain synergistic effect of these types of mission trips. It fills both people with the Spirit. And I hope I was not downplaying the impact you have had. I just wonder at times how much good we could do state side if we held off overseas missions for one year. It amazes me, as a culture, how we just are not receptive to evengelical thoughts anymore. People (Americans) just aren't interested.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 04:39 PM) We took off, I just got home. I had a few friends pick up the boats and one small equipment trailer. We pulled everything down and stored it in our two storage containers. Lots of work. I had one small 19' sailboat that we had to dig a few dead men and we're hoping they hold. We also just added a special roof that fit between the two buildings. That sucker will be in the bay and we have not even paid for it yet They are predicting a 5-6' surge, which will push against the buildings. I am dead tired and going to bed. I was awake since 3:00 am checking the forecasts. I'm glad you're out of the way... hopefully things hold down there for you. Let us know how you're doing from time to time if you can, even inland, you can get some nasty weather it looks like.

There's a joke in here somewhere... Seriously, stay safe, get the hell off that island if you can... and let us know how you're fairing.

QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 01:37 PM) Well, the NYT disagrees with you. They believe the speech (and the editorial which preceded it) contained new info. Personally, I don't disagree with you. I didn't find anything in the editorial that I didn't expect to hear. But that's a different argument than the one bmags has been making. The only thing I'm saying is that he has a valid point. A newspaper should be allowed to demand the same standards of any candidate editorial. If you want to argue how well it implemented those standards, that's fine, and I don't think I'd say much against you. The only reason I said anything here is that I think most of the replies to bmags were misrepresenting one of his main points. Btw, I think bmags would disagree with me about how new the editorial was, so take this as jmo. I understand and respect that opinion.

QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 01:01 PM) Again, they are not saying, Your opinion is wrong. They are saying, everybody already knows that you have that opinion. If a newspaper simply has this position, "Every candidate piece must contain some information that is not widely known", that is not a partial policy. It would be partial to enforce it for some pieces but not for others, however. And everyone knew Obama's widely known stance as well, but that was free and clear to run...

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 01:05 PM) I swear it is worse when the parties work together versus when they don't. They're all awesome at finger pointing to someone else when it's (supposedly) not their fault.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 22, 2008 -> 12:41 PM) I think it will end up pretty much like that, because this is (as one of the energy market experts quoted in the article said) a smokescreen. Congress wants people to think they are doing something. They don't care about the actual result, because that would be down the line anyway. They just want to look like they are acting on it. And by the way, I'd like it to be noted that the test vote was 94-0 in favor. That means this is a bi-partisan debacle. This should scare the poop out of anyone who has a clue how the market works. This could be the worst piece of legislation ever, and that's saying something.
