QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 01:01 PM) Could you imagine the media frenzy that would happen if one of the candidates DID actually rip one while they were talking or something? I'm sure we'd see link after link of it if McCain did it.

EEEEEEEEohhhh EEEEEEEEEEEohhhhh... ( BREAKING NEWS! John McCain just FARTED! Athomeboy_2000 wants you to know that pollutes the environment and therefore McCain flip-flopped on his anti-gas policy! /back to your regulary scheduled anti-McCain thread known as the new Democrat thread! (I'm sorry, I just had to).

QUOTE (lostfan @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 11:02 AM) I don't really think this is the "worst election we've ever had." I am not enamored with either McCain or Obama, or any other standard Democrat or Republican, but I see it like this - McCain would be an improvement over Bush, and Obama is definitely an improvement over Kerry. The 2004 election was pathetic and disheartening, IMO. I've started tuning the media out now. One too many manufactured controversies. The Obama phenomenon to me is not necessarily media manufactured. For example, I don't need hounded on what language I should or should not speak. I don't need hounded on whether or not we need (insert special programs here) from the government. I don't need to be told NAFTA or China sucks because the unions are paying his campaigh BILLIONS, probably TRILLIONS, to tell me that the economy sucks because out jobs went elsewhere. These are all eliteist stances, and the media doesn't have to tell me that.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 08:53 AM) Dye 0 for 10 since we put up the voting widget on this site. We need to take the bastard down, then.

QUOTE (tonyho7476 @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 09:05 AM) And it was fun to see them get a nice a$$ whoopin' yesterday. Now, split the 4 with the Tigers and we win 4 more in a row...and I'll be feeling fine. Texas has been playing well as of late. But, they have a horrendous (starting) pitching staff - with that said, I think they have three rookies pitching for them now, so the Sox won't be able to hit s***, we all know how that story ends usually when we face someone we haven't seen before...

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 08:54 AM) There is a difference between not seeing, and not agreeing. I don't agree with your assessment. That's fine, you are smart enough to determine your own ideas. There are quite a few (I would say the majority) that don't see the hypocrasy. If you can live with the hypocrasy because he's going to be "less hypocritical" then most, okay then. Hopefully I'm saying that right.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 07:28 AM) Jesse's son is also his national co-chair. Oh that's right... man, it all weaves together somehow, doesn't it? I heard on the news this morning that because Obama is hanging around Clinton, she's the VEEP pick. The media wants that so bad, they're going nuts.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 07:50 AM) With his injury history and being owed $6 million, does Havlat really have any trade value? I can't believe everyone wants to keep Havlat that bad. If you ship them both off for picks, more power to Tallon. It clears your cap space for the next 2 years. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 07:14 AM) I think Jesse benefits more from a win versus a loss. He might actually get a position of power out of this. I'd be pretty surprised at this because Jesse and Barack aren't exactly "friends".

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 06:32 AM) It is not the samething, and all you really have to do is look at the population per electoral vote in each state to understand how things would change. Right now there is a protection of the small states built into the system that gives them more value than if they were strictly based on population. This was not an accident. The founders of the electoral college wanted those same small state protections built into the Presidential process to protect their rights and interests against the disproportion of population. We have never been a 50% +1 democracy. The founders realized that complete mob rule wouldn't always work on its own. There needed to be some built in protections of everyone's interests. And not only the presidential process. It's one of the main reasons the senate exists.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 10, 2008 -> 06:21 AM) Its pretty sad when even Jesse Jackson is whispering essentially that Barack Obama is full of it. I hate to be on the same side as one of the countries biggest enforcers of the nations racial divide, but I will go one step further and say that Obama has been talking down to the entire nation, especially since Hillary dropped out, and it was refreshing to see someone who has a vested interest in seeing him win call him out on it. (even if he didn't want anyone else to know about it) And my question is, why can't general people see this? I just cannot understand the hype. Barack Obama is an eliteist - and I'm not trying to use that as a cliche - but he promotes social divide with his policy. Anytime you want to "redistribute" anything in a capitalistic society you have trouble. I understand there has to be some - but his whole policy on damn near everything has elements of it. There are other ways to do things.

I'm glad Minnie's coming back to reality a bit. They weren't going to win 18-20 the rest of the season...
-
People do realize that the electoral college is not totally related to "voting", right? There's a lot to be learned about the Great Compromise... and the actual structure of our entire government as a result. So, it's more then just electing a president - it's a part of how the checks and balances in the constitution works.

QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 05:36 PM) NS -- You bring up an old Weekly Pepper, one of the firsts, but in another weeks later I mentioned that Floyd was one of this season's biggest surprises --- and flukes. I suspect that this baseball season and next will prove that, but I do not know for sure. His curveball has been consistent, but I am not sure that it will be permanently so and in fact would guess that he is just another in a long-line of one-year wonders that Major League Baseball in general and Don Cooper's tutelage in particular generate. He's having a good year, though, and that's good for him and his team. It it my hope that Gavin Floyd becomes something like Jon Garland was for the Sox, someone who was pretty inconsistant that found consistancy after a slight re-work of his mechanics. I also happen to think that Floyd's issue has been more between the ears then anything, and if that's the case, and he's confident, that can make a huge difference. Only time will tell.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 03:30 PM) There wasn't a problem with Buffalo. The Bills had just as good of a shot of making the playoffs last year as the Bears do this year. But, New Years Day is a Thursday. Last year, it was a Tuesday, so the first weekend in January was 3+ days if Buffalo would have needed the field. Big difference. -

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 7, 2008 -> 06:00 AM) I still don't get why Wrigley? You can get so many more people in Soldier Field instead or if they wanted to get nuts they should try the race track here in Joliet. Well, the Bears may need the field in January... But seriously, that's why. It takes a while to set up and tear down this thing... -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 02:40 PM) I certainly hope there isn't a "free healthcare for everyone crowd", because no such thing exists - anywhere. One thing that I think is interesting about that story, though... its an indictment of the Canadian health care system, but that's not the same as saying its an indictment of socialized medicine. I can see lots of reasons for socialized medicine being problematic, but the long wait times for care in Canada aren't necessarily a result of the government running health care. If they have a shortage of doctors and nurses, then that's the problem. That can be addressed any number of ways. If the system itself artificially keeps the number of specialists down, to cut costs or discourage heavy use, then that's a problem too (and just plain stupid). But neither one of those problems is a definite issue with socialized medicine. It may or may not be, depending on how it is implemented. Why would anyone want to practice medicine in Canada if they choose to get a visa, get an American education, and make more money here? Furthermore, why is it that everyone wants to come here to practice medicine? That's why my "free healthcare for everyone" was in quotes, by the way, because it doesn't exist, you're right... but that's what people think (uneducated nonetheless) when they hear the Democrat plans for medical plans.

QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 01:20 PM) So, 'refining your position' is now a flip-flop? That should make Obama the master! He has 'refined his position' so much this campaign, I wonder if he remembers what it was to start with. It's allowed if a Democrat and a flip-flop if a Republican, or vice versa, depending on your favorite party of choice. -
QUOTE (Cknolls @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 01:14 PM) This seems like a good place for this: There was a great presentation recently at the National Press Club about the dangerous effects of medical socialism. From The Politico: Shona Robertson-Holmes was a mess. She had crushing headaches, insomnia and adrenaline levels so high that she constantly felt as if she had just stepped in front of a speeding bus. And that’s not to mention her rapidly deteriorating eyesight. She headed to her family doctor, who recommended that she see two specialists. But Robertson-Holmes is Canadian, and her state-provided health care gave her a wait time of four months to see a neurologist and six months to see an endocrinologist. Unable to get an expedited appointment, and with her eyesight worsening, Robertson-Holmes called the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and went in for tests and a diagnosis within a week. The doctors there told her she had a four-to-six-week window to have a marble-sized tumor on her pituitary gland removed before her vision loss would be irreversible. Returning home with the diagnosis, the Ontario native was still unable to expedite the surgery. Three weeks later, she came back to Mayo for brain surgery. And she took out a second mortgage to pay for the $100,000 ordeal. “Universal coverage” is not the same thing as timely access to high-quality care. And the "free healthcare for everyone" crowd will tell you that's an exception.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 8, 2008 -> 09:18 AM) Its been discussed here, in an indirect way. Today, the Trib published an off day article, analyzing the case - is the 2008 team better than the 2005 team? Linky. Ah yes, the on paper vs. on the field debate. I'll take 2005 until they win it in 2008.

/cues Rocky music I'm making a comeback, ya'll... It looks like I will be able to make it back after all... :) We'll see if my sinister plans stay together... Now last year, I wanted my daughter to go to her first baseball game in Chicago, and it got rained out. Now, I have resurrected hopes that I can try, try again for her first game at Sox park ...
