QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Nov 5, 2005 -> 12:58 AM) The guy in the basement wasn't supposed to grab the second antidote, only the one for himself. Also, he wasn't willing to reach through the fire to the knob which shut off the trap. SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!! ------------------------------------------------ The girl, too, didn't even listen to the tape -- she just reaches right into the box like the ignorant person she's portrayed to be.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/columnists/askba.html I'd recommend you read this disclaimer, first: and Damn, the Diamondbacks are loaded. Jackson and Drew are going to be spectacular, Quentin has had awesome numbers throughout his whole minor league career (lowest OPS = .937), and if Upton pans out down the road... This team could be a force.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 5, 2005 -> 04:50 AM) 2 things on your last point. To preface my post I must first say, B&B may come across as knowledgeable Baseball guys but they're are clueless when it comes to certain topics. If anyone from this starting staff was going to be moved it would not be Ozzie Guillen's best friend/family member in Freddy Garcia, it would be the 26 year old starter who has finally had a season showing that he could live up to his potential and is in his final year of arbitration eligiblility in Jon Garland. Garland's value >>> Garcia's value. Hank Blalock is extremely scary player. He put up a .749 OPS last season, that's 13 points higher than Rowand. Blalock did NOT hit on the road at all last season, his home/away splits are just horrid. Home: 20HR, 63RBI, .297/.361/.534/895 Away: 5HR, 29RBI, .231/.276/.335/.611 80% of Blalock's HRs came at home last season. The only thing you know you're getting from Blalock is great defense. Great point on Blalock. I've always though very highly of him, but because of your post, you forced me to look at his stats on bb-ref. 94 OPS+ this year -- ick! Career high OPS+ of 118 -- that's good, but certainly not great. And, most importantly -- the past two years, he's had K/BB ratios of 149/75 and 132/51. Hell, his .749 OPS this year was WORSE than Joe Crede's. Wow -- he was a worse player than Joe Crede this year. That surprises the hell out of me...

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 10:54 PM) He has been disliked before that. Not telling anyone about the extent of his injury I think was one, but who knows. its become obvious they dont like him. Your bench looks correct except put Timo in Gload's spot and there you go. Ehh, I dunno if Timo will be back this year. Afterall, 0-for-2 in the playoffs, right? Talk about un-clutch-ness... Anyways, they couldn't just do that, because they wouldn't have a backup firstbaseman then. Maybe the Burroughs - for - Borchard trade will be revisited?
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 10:47 PM) Kinda reminds me of the Wunsch situation. I dunno... I just think the reason that they dislike Gload is because he can only play one spot. Not because they hate the guy. I don't recall what he said earlier in the year causing such a problem. Wasn't it pretty much along the lines of, "Well, when you don't play very often, you (meaning Ross) have to make that play, and I didn't". I certainly don't think it was meant as an, "I want more PT!" type of thing -- I mean, who was he going to play over? Konerko? He's a smarter guy than that. I think he was just dissappointed in himself, really. Who knows... I'd really like to see a bench consisting of Harris / Ozuna / Gload / Widger / Anderson (if Rowand isn't traded) -- it'd be a helluva lot better than the 2005 bench.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 10:37 PM) GLOAD ISNT GOING TO PLAY FOR THE WHITE SOX why cant anyone get this point? I think he'll be on the bench, actually.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 10:27 PM) hahaha, seriously, Ross Gload...come on. You not only mentioned a player who hasnt played at the major league level, but then Ross Gload, who never will with this organization. Considering Ozzie and KW wont let Ross Gload play on the big team, no I dont think they can match what he did. Okay, so? Anderson can play against lefties, put him in a situation where he has a shot at succeeding, and Gload put up an .853 OPS when he was given a chance to play. I'm not recommending this platoon, BTW -- just saying that Gload + Anderson >>> Everett.
-
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 09:20 PM) I actually like that though, not that we're losing some power but Juan rolling over to Scott, there would be a lot of options when Juan would get on. The one thing I don't like in that lineup is AJP batting 5th but like Tony said this will never happen so not much to it either way. Problem is, with Pierre, he's not anywhere near the defensive CF'er that Rowand is. He's behind Rowand on both of the defensive metrics I'm looking at, by a lot, too -- Win Shares and Rate 2. So, pretty much, you're losing runs defensively with a major downgrade in CF, as well as offensively -- other than stealing bases, he doesn't do a whole lot. At least Podsednik gets on-base at a better than league average rate... Not to mention that he just simply isn't that good. .276/.326/.354 last year, nearing 30 -- the Cubs can have him, I'll take Podsednik. Probably should have read your last sentence...
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 09:00 PM) You don't think a Ross Gload/Brian Anderson platoon could produce more than Everett's "stellar" .745 OPS? Then again, with your analysis, it's tough to argue with ya... :rolly
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 07:25 PM) Yes, but I think a world series championship and all the love Ozzie has been getting as a player manager may change the way he thinks. He's one helluva hitter, even at his age, too. I know some people are scared by the contract, but really, you're getting better production offensively, and less years on the contract. More than anyone else, I really hope Williams pursues Delgado hard.
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 07:08 PM) What have the past 3 years shown us about him being a starting everyday player? It shows us that he can't do it. Maybe Griffey should be our everyday DH. At this point I'd have more faith in him staying healthy than Frank (and I have zero faith in either of them staying healthy). Payroll will be at 85-90 mill, the Sox have the money to resign Konerko and find themslelves a good DH. Even if its a guy like Aubrey Huff (who had a down year last year, but is still a quality hitter in my mind, statistics damned). Well, 2003, he stayed healthy, and was the team's best hitter. These past two years, he's been aggravated by the same injury, but when healthy, has still produced. I'd like to see him get another shot; unlike this past year, he won't be forcing anything, and he'll have had a lot more recovery time, without the damage of surgery. I'm not saying you'll have to 'rely' on him. Hell, Carl Everett was our DH and we made out okay -- there's no doubt in my mind a Ross Gload and Brian Anderson platoon could do a better job than Everett did last year. But... we still need to find ourselves a great 1B/RF (with the contingency plan that if we find a RF like Giles, we move Dye to 1B) before we start looking at who's going to play DH -- IMO. Huff -- ehh -- if you can get him cheap because he had a bad year, then yeah, I guess you should make a move for him. But I still think he might end up costing more than he's worth... I'd rather go the extra mile and try for Tracy or Delgado.
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 06:55 PM) Because the Sox shouldn't settle. Any move where you put reliance on frank being an everyday player is stupid. The Sox have the chips to get a guy like Delgado or a similar bat and need to try the darnest to pursue that. Plus having Frank on the bench is foolish. I like carrying extra pitchers and having Frank on the bench means you can't do that. I'm not saying carrying Frank on the bench. I'm saying he's your everyday DH. If the Sox trade for Delgado, do you really see them also going after a Brian Giles? If they do, more power to 'em -- if Williams added Delgado and Brian Giles, this offense instantly becomes a powerhouse. But I don't see them doing that. I see one major move (be it through a trade for Delgado, resigning Konerko, or adding Giles in FA), maybe a move for another bench player (Burroughs is a possibility), and some cheap bullpen guys (Dotel maybe?) -- that's it. Thomas, when healthy, is still a very valuable asset. The situation going into 2006 is a little different than the situation going into 2005, because he's had an extra three-four months to heal, without surgery. I know my feelings w/r/t players like Thomas -- low BA, high SLG, high OBP -- totally differ from yours. But I still think a healthy Thomas can be a .250/.350/.500 player, which, when you're only paying $3-6 million for, is very valuable.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 05:42 PM) I don't think McCourt has a clue what he's doing running that team. He's doing fine with the business aspects of it...but in terms of actually running a baseball organization...no. ^^^^

Is it true that Sweeney was playing with two bum wrists this summer?

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 06:44 PM) Guys like Erubiel Durazo and Frank Thomas, thats what 2nd place teams would do, not defending champs. If you can bring back Frank Thomas for a $2 million base salary with incentives to take the contract up to $5-6 million, tell me how that's a stupid move? If you can legitimately get better at BOTH 1B and DH -- say, by bringing in Brian Giles along with resigning Konerko or trading for a Tracy/Delgado -- then, of course, you move on. But -- if it's doing something like trading for Thome -- then why not just keep the players and stick with Thomas? Of course you'll need to, by keeping Thomas, strengthen your bench (which, in all honesty, can be as simple as adding Anderson and Gload to it). Keeping Thomas, at the right price, is a good move.
-
QUOTE(ptatc @ Nov 4, 2005 -> 06:42 PM) How about Erubiel Durazo as a part time LH DH? He is coming off an injury filled season and would be cheap. If they're going to bring in Durazo, I'd rather just bring Frank back. Both have the same problem -- they're both exclusive DHs. Both can hit like hell, but, I doubt that an Ozzie managed team would carry two guys that can only DH.

QUOTE(GoArow33 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 11:15 PM) If the White Sox lose Konerko... ...then we get two nice, shiny draft picks!
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 08:12 PM) So be it. Then leave it to Gload, or maybe Rogo. I still think we need to consider our own resources before spending a ton of new money. Give them a shot. We need power. We're losing 40 homers. Contrary to what the media wants you to believe, we won because we hit a lot of homers, and caught everything and anything hit in the park, and pitched awesome. And you know what -- I love it. Ozzie consolidated the OBP we did have at the top of the order with Iguchi and Podsednik, and, other then maybe sticking with Everett too long in the three spot, he did an awesome job of lineup construction. But, I'm getting off topic. Even if Rogo and Gload were to have a peak year next season, I doubt either of them would reach 20 homers. Lots of doubles, but we need lots of power. Long story short, I'm rooting hard for Carlos Delgado. He's a better hitter than Konerko has been, and is that big lefty bad we really need. He had a .981 OPS last year, playing half his games in Florida, along with the other notorious pitchers parks of the NL East (RFK, Shea). He'd be such a great pickup...
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 07:48 PM) If Konerko leaves... And Thomas is healthy... Then give 1B up to a contest between our minor league starting 1B's, who are all among the best at their levels: Gload, Rogowski, or Daigle. Let them duke it out in spring training. Let the best man win.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 04:50 PM) I'd also love to see a DVD set with ALL the playoff games ~_^ Anybody know anything more about this? I know that there were a s***load of these out when the Red Sox won it all last year (illegally or otherwise), and I'd really like to get my hands on something like that, even if it's just the World Series games.
-
QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 3, 2005 -> 04:36 PM) Once again, we come to the point that most Sox fans want short, incentive laden contracts, and everyone earning about $5mil per year. Tex, it's not about that. Let's count the negatives here with giving Konerko anything more than a three year contract. a.) He doesn't play a premier defensive position to where if his offense slips, he can make up for that with good-to-great defense. b.) He's going to hurt you on the basepaths; and, if his hip really is a chronic problem that will hurt him down the line, then there's more trouble. c.) He has an "old-player" skill set; patience at the plate and power, not a whole lot else. Those players tend to age very, very poorly. I know this isn't going to get it done, but I'd offer three (maybe four), HEAVILY frontloaded -- like, $15 million for the first two years, and then a reduced (but still eight figure) salary for the latter year (s). If not, it's time to focus our attention elsewhere. If need be, overpay for Brian Giles -- not a long contract, but I certainly wouldn't mind giving him two-three years at $10 million per. Get the gun ready, because it's a very good possibility -- IMO.

Anyone watching the game? A GREAT scrap between Vandermeer and Downey? They were like a minute in, and a ref tried to break it up, and Downey shoved the ref away. Eventually, Vandermeer got in a big left that sent Downey to the ice, bloody nose (perhaps broken) and all. Anderson looking good. Made some good saves, Hawks up 2-1. Still, however, few bright spots -- Seabrook and Vorobiev look good, so does Aucoin. And, Barnaby is doing a good job at what he does very well -- be a major pain in the ass, or a real b****. The most concerning thing is Ruutu's health (or lack of it). Gosh -- it'd be such a let down if he can't stay healthy. -
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 2, 2005 -> 10:39 PM) What is Timo's contract status? Everett is also gone, so that's a roster spot there also. So we've freed up 3 roster spots. Now let's plug guys in. Brian Anderson. Frank Thomas?. Do you want Gload with that 3rd spot, and if so, are you comfortable with Pablo being your only backup on the left side of the infield (other than, of course, Jermaine Dye and Chris Widger.) Go with what ya got -- Anderson (if Rowand isn't traded), Ozuna, Harris, Widger, Gload. Anderson takes the OF, Harris takes 2B, Ozuna takes the left side of the infield. Widger -- he can play anywhere, he's a star.
