Official NFL General Discussion Thread

Would I be an idiot if I sat Peyton Manning (vs Houston) in favor of Matt Hasslebeck (vs St Louis) and Eli Manning (vs Minny)? -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 12, 2005 -> 01:47 PM) You gotta remember this though YAS, Reed plays half his games at Safeco Field and virtually has no power at the moment. He hit no home runs at all there this season. Anderson on the other hand, if he played everyday could hit 15-20 HR's still, since he plays half his games at the Cell. As for your point on Rowand having a better chance to return to his 2004 numbers, that may be the case, but I still like Anderson's long - term scope better than Rowand's. And if we have to fill a need via a trade, and a team wants Rowand, I've got no hesitation at all giving him up. IIRC, Reed was playing hurt this year, too. Something wrong with his wrists, I think... Beck -- one concern with Abreu is that he's a pretty bad outfielder, and that's only going to get worse now that he's what, 32 years old? 31?

QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 12, 2005 -> 12:08 AM) The sox have missed the injury bug, eps. to their SP's. But it's always a chance, esp after a long postseason with extra innings. But saying that getting an ace pitching prospect is a waste?! Come on. Like stud pitchers won't find a spot somewhere, or can't be used at the deadline for trades. Stockpiling quality young arms isn't a luxury IMO. It's a necessity, esp for a team built on pitching and defense Rowand is our main trading chip this offseason, along with some of the bullpen arms like Marte. If we trade Rowand for a pitching prospect -- how the hell are we supposed to get a bat in here? Because, by the looks of it, Konerko is going to want more than 4 years/$52 million, and unless we land Brian Giles, there's no one else out there who can replace Konerko's offense. Rowand needs to be used as a chip for landing a big bat -- someone like Delgado -- not a pitching prospect. Unless it was one of those deals where you flip the prospect off to the other team, but by what you're saying, you'd want to keep that prospect.

QUOTE(Felix @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 11:42 PM) Only 4 rookies in all of baseball had a higher OPS than Rowand last year. And Anderson's 12:0 K:BB ratio in his first 34 AB didnt look pretty. While we're at it (judging guys on tiny sample sizes), where the hell is Joe Borchard and his 160 OPS+ (in 12 ABs, but leading the team, nonetheless) going to play next season?

QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 10:03 PM) I don't think the sox will be [and shouldn't be] counting on El Duque to throw much in 06. Why do the Sox need a starter ready to step in for 2006? Isn't that what Haigwood/Broadway are for? If things go as planned, they should be just about ready for '06, with Liotta and Gonzalez also knocking on the door. El Duque, if not traded, will be the our swingman. He'll be the fourth-seventh inning guy incase one of our starters has a rough (and short) outing. If he's relied upon to throw about 80-100 innings, I think that role is perfect for him. He should pitch a whole lot better when he's told to throw two-three innings at a time, rather than a five-seven. It was great seeing him in Boston actually blowing hitters away -- he hit 93! Did he ever hit 93 as a starter? He might have here and there, but I doubt it. You act like our staff is made up of five Kerry Woods'. You can pretty much (knock on wood) pencil in Garland and Buehrle for 200 IP. Freddy Garcia gets knicked up once in a while, but his 162 game average for IP is 222. Contreras hasn't missed any significant time (that I know of) in his career, and McCarthy doesn't strike me as the guy who's going to have arm troubles -- he's not throwing a blazing fastball, and he doesn't rely on a hard slider. He's a fastball/changeup/overhand-curveball pitcher -- not exactly a guy who should throw out his arm. Trading Rowand for a guy who might not even help the team this year (unless that prospect is then shipped off for a bat) is silly, IMO.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 11, 2005 -> 12:52 PM) The NY Daily News article said that the Sox were looking for a bat to replace Everett. Anyone think that if Pierre is moved, Rowand could be included in a possible deal for Delgado? I'd make a trade centered around Rowand + Marte for Delgado. Of course, I doubt it would be that simple, but... Anyways -- does Wilkerson being mentioned above mean he's available? He'd be a nice addition... Seems like he had a down year last season -- 21 less homers, but also had 49 non-HR xtra-base hits.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 10, 2005 -> 04:07 PM) Two things: - Ozzie knew Pierre when he was with the Marlins. In my mind, Ozzie and KW would jump at the chance to trade Rowand and a prospect for Pierre. That trade would be awful...

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 10, 2005 -> 04:24 AM) You are f***ing insane. There is absolutely no way you give Paul Konerko $16.67M a year. That's $3.67M too much, that money could be used in much better ways than Konerko. I think what Easyw was trying to get across in his post is that money isn't the biggest factor, but the extra years are. He should still be a 120-135 OPS+ player for the next two years, but beyond that, it gets iffy. But, even I wouldn't go that high. I want to see what happens with Matsui and the Yankees, so I'm following that closely. There's pretty much only two bats who can replace what Konerko did for us last year, and that's Konerko, and Giles. While Matsui isn't quite the caliber hitter of either of those guys (well -- Win Shares has Matsui being a better hitter than Konerko, but I'm not sure if it's right to compare a LF'er to a 1B-man), he's just a notch below. Just about one day more till the ball starts rolling... again.

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Nov 10, 2005 -> 02:28 AM) How many teams do you think would be willing to claim him when he is demanding $11 or $12 mil? My guess is not very many. He's probably worth an extra one or two million, based upon the fact of all the extra revenue he should bring in. But you're right, not quite an eight-figures player. I think he's in the $7-9 million per year range, and I wouldn't mind giving him three years.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Nov 10, 2005 -> 01:34 AM) I just want to throw out there, Paulie is 29 years of age. /that is all 30 before the start of Opening Day '06.

Bears impending QB "controversy"?

QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 02:18 AM) Because the the scouting report coming out of college was that he wasn't physically big enough and he wasn't that mobile. It said that he would get injured very quickly in the NFL. Grossman, IIRC, didn't miss a game during his whole college or high school career. Yet, the scouting report said he would get injured very quickly? Please, come up with a new schtick, because you're not bringing a whole lot right now... -
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Nov 9, 2005 -> 05:59 AM) But more rbi's. I know Matsui played in a loaded yanks lineup but the guy is a rbi machine, great situational hitter. EDIT: Looked it up, combined overbay and hideki had one more rbi then paul and carl. I'm just a huge fan of Matsui would love to get him, still think it's a pipe dream. Things could get VERY interesting if Hideki doesn't have a contract by Friday...

I'm sure this was posted somewhere, but it warrants discussion... http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...tesox-headlines (Thanks Cheat)

QUOTE(ottawa_sox @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 11:54 PM) Here we go with the numbers again. If both Mags and Kong are faced with a runner on second and nobody out ........ who is going to force the ball to the right side for the benefit of the team. Just go back 2 years and the preceding several and compare our stats to the Twins. This year we got smart. This year 2 of our stalwart hitters were moved to other cities. Oh, so Magglio is evil too? Okay, let me add that to my list... Valentin... Lee... Ordonez.

Iguchi finishes 4th in AL ROY voting

QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 09:38 PM) A 1.39 whip is not that terrible. Not great, but not downright terrible. You have to understand that a guy who throws that many innings is very valuable. Edit-In the last 25 years, the only guy to win the ROY that threw 200 innings was Dwight Gooden. Most guys who won, and there have only been a few-most of which are NL guys-threw 30-50 innings less than Chacin. I generally agree with this. Chacin had a 119 ERA+, while Scott Kazmir quietly had a good season for himself -- 114 ERA+. Blanton, too -- 127 ERA+! This year's was a real tough call. I think the best hitter was Jonny Gomes, as to who the best pitcher is, that's debatable -- I'd say one of the two A's, Blanton or Street. It's a tough call, and not something I really care a whole lot about -- we all know Iguchi's contributions to the 2005 ChiSox, same goes for Uribe and Crede and Rowand w/r/t the Gold Glove (or lack thereof). -
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Nov 8, 2005 -> 02:35 AM) Market value wise, he's a proven pitcher who would've gotten tons more on the open market this past offseason. And again, we have no replacement for him. No way I trade him. Out of the big four of Contreras, Buehrle, Garland, and Garcia, Freddy had the worst year. I'd agree that going into this year, it's probably not the best idea to trade him, but going into next year, when Haigwood or Broadway or Gonzalez might be ready for cheap, I'd certainly look at dealing him. I believe he's going to make close to $20 million in the next two year, and he's on the wrong side of 30. I know he's Ozzie's pal and all, but he might just be the worst SP on our staff next year (not that that's a bad thing). If there's a good deal out there to be had, I'd certainly explore the possibility.

Riddle me this Trent Yawney
CWSGuy406 replied to NUKE_CLEVELAND's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Seabrook is the best. He can skate, he can handle himself in his own zone, and he can score a little bit, too. I was at the game, and he's a lot of fun to watch. Khabi also played well tonight. As a hole, our offense wasn't finishing -- so, what else is new? -- but Khabi made some nice saves, and they did alright on the PK. Borque and Vorobiev are pretty fun to watch. St Pierre -- man, I know it's only one night, but for a little guy, you'd think that he could skate a little faster than he did. Hopefully, Khabi can get on a little roll here. He looked good tonight... -
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 03:55 AM) It is starting to sound a little more like Hideki isn't a lock to stay in NY..... He'd be a decent-to-good pickup, but then you'd have to juggle around the outfielders -- Matsui would probably have to move RF. He's also a worse offensive player than Konerko is, so it would probably have to be coupled with another move.
-
QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 7, 2005 -> 12:49 AM) The chart just hurt my head. As for Mr. Guzman....there's a comedian in every bunch. I still think he'll play better than '05 LOL, beck, I'm sure you can go back and find something dumb I said in the offseason if you really felt like it...

If you could choose one player for 2006...
CWSGuy406 replied to santo=dorf's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Helluva photoshop job on Helton. I'll say Giles, because he'll only cost money, followed closely by Delgado. -
QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Nov 6, 2005 -> 08:42 PM) LOL! Beat me to it. Maybe throw in a bag of used balls to sweeten the deal. Hehe, sort of like Garland last year? :banghead
-
QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 6, 2005 -> 11:34 AM) Last yr, Giles had a higher SLG % at home. Whatever the reason, I don't think Giles will hit for over a .600 SLG like he did in Pitt a few yrs back. Add in the fact he wants to play on the west coast, all this talk about him playing for the sox in 2006 is just fiction anyway Did you read 3E8's chart at all? 16 more homers!!!!!! Then again, maybe someone like Christian Guzman would be a better fit...?
-
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Nov 6, 2005 -> 06:16 PM) Does anyone think we have a realistic chance of trading for Delgado this offseason? I do... Mient-alphabet sucks. Career OPS+ of 100, so he's a league average hitter. Just what we need to replace Paul Konerko's 136 OPS+. :headshake
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Nov 5, 2005 -> 10:18 AM) According to the Palm Beach Post, the Marlins will likely begin shopping Carlos Delgado and Mike Lowell at next week's GM meetings. There's no doubt that Lowell will be available. Delgado says he was told by ownership in September that he wouldn't be traded, but that hasn't stopped anyone from throwing his name around. Even if the Marlins are willing to move him, it doesn't figure that anything will happen before Paul Konerko signs. Nov. 5 - 3:44 am et Marte + Rowand + Fields for Delgado and a small chunk of cash, but not much. Ahh, gotta love the armchair GM.
-
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Nov 5, 2005 -> 10:27 PM) And Konerko's road stats are good? I havent looked at it this year but last season he was absolutely horrible on the road.... Yes all those rangers take advantage of their park but they also would be able to take advantage of our park. But, in Blalock's case, he barely put up replacement level numbers on the road. .231/.276/.335 are Timo-like numbers. Tiexera you can make a case for, because he was still pretty damn good on the road -- something like an .800 OPS. Blalock, quite frankly, wasn't very good this year.
