  1. Can someone who thinks that this is such a lopsided deal for Hendry and the Cubs tell me why exactly...? I could see one thinking it being in favor of the Cubs, but by no means is it a 'steal'.
  2. Aww, no one has said CSI? I'm surprised. I can watch that show non-stop. Family Guy has been mentioned. Other than that and sports (and 90% of the time, I'm watching sports), I find myself looking for something different every night. Some nights I'll look for a movie on HBO/SHO/ENC, other nights I'll watch the SNL reruns on E and Comedy Central. And, poker. Lots and lots of poker, like the 2004 WSOP episodes that I basically know what happens, yet still watch. And finally... MLB Extra Innings/NHL Center Ice. Love those packages...
  3. Happy B-Day, Cheat! (Sorry that it's belated. Shame on me.)
  4. My gut has told me all along that we wouldn't be upgrading at SP, unless Contreras or El Duque absolutely fell off a cliff, and neither has. I'll still hope that we grab Eddie Guardado, as Wagner is looking less and less likely. Guardado would really solidify an already good 'pen (as everyone knows).
  5. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 04:20 AM) Maybe it's just me, but I don't think the Cubs "raped" the Indians in this deal. Dubois is a big time power prospect, and even though he's better suited for a DH position, the Cubs could have packaged him to get a much bigger upgrade in the outfield over Jody Gerut. There's not a team in the AL that wouldn't take their chances on Dubois as DH. Agreed with Fathom and Kevhead. Dubois has some pop -- a .929 OPS in the minors. Problem is, Dusty kept f***ing around with him by putting in Holly rather than sticking with him. Gerut is alright -- nothing special offensively, an improvement defensively, but as far as ceilings, I'd much rather have the former with Dubois, regardless of his defense.
  6. For anyone who went to the game tonight... please, talk about Joe. I was there, and I just want others to not think that I'm overreacting. He was awesome tonight -- awesome. And I'm not even talking about what he did at the plate. He had some real tough in-between bounces, and he made 'em look easy. On the DP he turned with Iguchi, that ball was a rocket, and again -- made it look like a piece of cake. I was so impressed by Joe tonight...
  7. QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 09:14 PM) And I think its laughable every time the thing that holds Gload back is, he cant play OF. He could not play OF when he was healthy either. hehe SB Yup. Screw the fact that we have six other guys who can play OF if Gload was brought up (Pods-Rowand-Dye-Everett-Ozuna-Harris/Perez). Screw his .321/.375/.479 line last season in 234 AB's. Screw Harris' line of .215/.295/.215, and Timo's slightly better line. Hell or high water, we need them on our team! Ross Gload can't play OF, so f*** him! If Timo is such an important part of the Latin presence in the clubhouse, than let him be a bench coach. But this is becoming a joke. I guess I should prepare for the, "We're 30 games up without him" line...
  8. What the f***... This is such... mercy, this is such a stupid f***ing move. I didn't want to be pissed before the game, but now I am.
  9. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 06:41 PM) Cintron has truly fallen out of favor with the Diamondbacks. If you listen to talk around the league, teams are truly enamored with Willie Harris' speed. I guess they all think he is a project that is too fast to not be interested in. Unfortunately, we all know this is not true, and that Willie Harris can't hit, has no stolen base instict, and sucks at defense (ie worthless). If the Diamondbacks can't give Cintron the everyday job after what he accomplished in 2003, then they are willing to deal him. Can't steal bases, yet is successful over 80% of the time over his career. Can't play defense, yet has the best range of any secondbaseman in the AL. "If you listen to talk around the league, teams are truly enamored with Willie Harris' speed." What the hell are you talking about? Quit acting like you're in 'the know', unless Steve stands for 'Steve Phillips' or something like that.
  10. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 05:41 PM) Uuuum, no. Not Chris Young. Owens, yes. Somewhere, obvious sarcasm is shaking her little head...
  11. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 05:29 PM) Earlier in the thread, one report said Randa to any team for a AA prospect......uuuum, DO IT! Yep, Randa for Chris Young! Right on!
  12. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 05:26 PM) What is Walker's ERA at Charlotte? HiYO!!!! Worse than Jon Adkins. Walker sports an even sexier 5.96 ERA.
  13. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 05:18 PM) Haha seriously, Adkins is nothing. 5.88 ERA down at Charlotte. Hey, let's bring him up in a pennant race!
  14. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 04:31 AM) Well, you don't want 4 SPs making at or around 10 MIL each in two years from now, unless you have a 90 MIL+ payroll to work with. Even then, they'd be taking up 40% to 45% of the payroll. That's too much. If you're going to have an area of excellence, it (obviously) should be pitching, but I don't want to end up like the Houston Astros. We need balance, and it ain't gonna happen if we have that much cash tied up in SPs. I agree 100%. I can't see the Sox investing anywhere from $30-$40 million in a guy that's such a huge injury risk. 200 IP once in his career -- once. Best ERA in one year? 3.30. Career ERA? 3.83. Career ERA+ of 109. I'm sorry, for a guy who's pitched in a pitcher's park for his MLB years, that's not a guy who I want making $10 million. To say the least, I'm not very thrilled with this trade. I don't see that making us better this year. Throw in the fact that Lowell (who's had really good career numbers) has, for whatever reason, fallen off a cliff this season with what, $25 million left on his contract? Uh -- I'm not seeing the epic improvement that means losing two top prospects over. If it was a huge improvement, that's one thing, but like I said -- I don't think the improvement is really all that great.
  15. QUOTE(Wedge @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 02:49 AM) Yeah, but Schilling/Pedro are no Schilling/Pedro this season, either. I understand that. I was just addressing the point brought up about not needing a deep 'pen in the playoffs, as the BoSox only used three relievers (is that true? I could've sworn they used Lowe out of the 'pen at one point or another). If the Sox could get the lead going into the seventh inning, that's huge. Shortening the game by a third. Then go to whatever combo in the seventh of Cotts/Politte, then in the 8th to Hermy/Marte, then to the ninth with Wagner (or Guardado). That's an awesome bullpen.
  16. QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 02:32 AM) Another quick note here, the Red Sox went throught the post-season primarily using only 3 relievers: Timlin/Foulke/Embree (Myers was used as a LOOGY a couple of times). The Red Sox also had Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez. I like Mark Buehrle and Freddy Garcia -- I like 'em a lot, but they're no Schilling/Pedro.
  17. QUOTE(SHAFTR @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 01:58 AM) I'd go after Wagner. He'd be a very intimidating closer for the playoffs. I'm still fine with Uribe at SS. He's a great fielder and good enough for a 9 hitter. He does the important things (a la Sac flies). With Crede's back troubles, I understand the concern in getting another utility fielder who can play 3rd. I'd recommend going after someone cheap instead of a Freel, Randa or Vizquel. In fact, I'd be happy with someone from somebody's minor system or a team's 25th man. Just someone who is solid defensive 3rd baseman and can spot start. I agree wholeheartedly. I'm not extremely thrilled with what Uribe has done on offense, but I have to believe he's gonna have a better second half of the season. As for the bullpen, there's the guys I like a lot -- Wagner and Guardado are right up there. Then there's a bunch of guys that I think would be nice additions, certainly big upgrades over Vizcaino/Shingo, and if you could get them without paying a huge price, I'd do it. And, before I list the additions, I should say that I'm not as confident in Jenks as you guys are -- I wouldn't be that confident putting him in the game with a four run lead in the sixth. Anyways, Chad Qualls is a reliever that came up in the Boston trades, and I'd love for the Sox to grab him. He's 26 years old, put up a 3.55 ERA last season and is currently posting a 4.10 ERA with a 3.30 FIP (Fielding-Independent Pitching, I think that's the name), meaning he's been a bit unlucky. Then there's Scott Eyre, who seems to have found a spot as a pretty decent reliever -- ERAs of 3.32, 4.10, and 2.48 the last three seasons (3.25 FIP -- still damn good, even if it's above his ERA). Finally, there's Lilly and Redman. Redman isn't great, but I think he'd be a nice arm to have down the stretch, a guy who can give you league-average innings. He'd probably hurt a little bit with the move to the AL, but I still think he'd be a decent option (again -- not suggesting giving Anderson up for him, but a prospect around the level or lower than Jerry Owens, and I'm not sure that Pitt would even do that). I'd love Lilly, a whole lot more than Redman, but Toronto is going to have to lose some games this coming week for that to open up a little bit. EDIT: And I'm calling it Jason. As one of Duque's biggest backers, he's going to pitch his best game of the year Saturday vs. Boston. I'll be there to witness it. Just to stick it in your face.
  18. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 08:55 PM) Just an average pitcher who will make ~$5 mil next season isn't the most attractive of options. I'd rather be paying that amount to him than El Duque though. Ick -- I didn't know he was signed through next season. Maybe I'll keep Jerry Owens, then... EDIT: I should say, though, that he'd be the type of guy I'd want as a long reliever. He's been an average pitcher throughout his career, which is something we could use in place of Vizcaino/Shingo. I'd take him, though, for Viz and a decent prospect (but nothing too good). Oh, and Pitt would have to eat about half of next year's salary. It's hard to find league average pitcher's for $2.5 million bucks, so it'd be a decent pickup -- IMO, of course.
  19. FWIW -- there's rumors going around (SoSH, BTF -- places it's being talked about) that there's a three-way deal in place with Florida/San Diego/Boston, with Burroughs/Arroyo going to Florida, Burnett/Lowell going to Boston, and prospects going to San Diego. And neither Burroughs or Lowell are in today's lineup. Just, something to talk about (true or not).
  20. If you have the funds, get out to the Cell sometime this week and see this team. They deserve a week of sellout crowds for such an awesome job in Cleveland, as well as the first half. They need to know we're behind them 100%. And, as Hawk mentioned on the broadcast, already 81K sold for the Detroit series (IIRC), and over 120K for the Boston series. I'll be out there Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. I'm so proud and happy with this team. Keep on chuggin', Sox!
  21. QUOTE(SHAFTR @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 05:08 PM) Dunn has a .390 OBP this year and a. 566 slugging (6th in the NL). Overall his OPS is .956, which is 5th in the NL. So, I wouldn't complain that much about his batting average. Here is also an interesting article http://www.baseballmusings.com/archives/009464.php I'm not advocating trading Rowand, but I have to defend Dunn. That's a real great article... Thanks for posting it. I'd talk a little more about it, but it doesn't really apply to the thread.
  22. I might trade Jerry Owens for him...
  23. New York Daily News: Red Sox will get Burnett I'd stay out of this and let Baltimore/Boston/Toronto overpay for him and Lowell's awful contract.
  24. Uhh -- there might be, but my dad (being a teacher) got the actual blue stub-things that you just go to the box office with and get your discounted tickets. Gimmie a minute and I think I can find the code, though. EDIT: Check your PMs...
  25. QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 03:35 AM) If I were the White Sox scouts I'd be getting a line on everybody from Colorado and Cincinnati. The Rockies have started moving players, and it's a good bet the Reds will too. My guess is, the White Sox have a pretty good idea of what Joe Randa can and cannot do. They probably don't need a scout there to specifically watch Randa, and I doubt they were. The thing we haven't really talked a whole lot about with Randa is, he'd cost us another roster spot, meaning Timo and Willie would both have to be sent down, not just one or the other. And, while I really am not as much of a fan of being able to play a bunch of positions as Ozzie is, your basically losing one position for Randa. Say, you lose 2B and CF capabilities with Harris if you trade for Randa. And, same with Timo, except LF/RF. Like I said -- it doesn't really worry me all that much, but I could see it being a concern.
