Nba officials told to prepare for a lockout.
CWSGuy406 replied to qwerty's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Speaking of the NBA, has it really become that bad? I mean, after the National Anthem, Will friggin' Smith? Mercy... Sorry, I just think that's extremely pathetic. -
QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jun 10, 2005 -> 04:54 AM) Its all good. Maybe they will get better as the rooks develop and maybe they won't. I would never take a swipe at any of the rooks because I had a chance to watch a lot of em play 2 years ago and they defenitely showed flashes of brilliance. I think we misunderstood each other here a little bit but the death of the Hawks is a really sore subject with me and when I hear about Blackhawk hockey the first thing that comes to mind is Wirtz and I tend to start ranting. We're all good, Wirtz sucks, Pully's a b****, but the kids are looking good -- and Tallon has done a halfway decent job so far.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jun 10, 2005 -> 04:45 AM) I agree that they aren't better as players but at least money isin't an issue in the minors and they are focused on winning hockey games. I am no longer a Hawks fan because I'm sick of Bill Wirtz screwing the fans over year after year. That's the crux of my argument. When I refer to Hawks management BTW, I'm talking about Wirtz and his yes-man Pulford. They have all the control over what happens in Hawkdom. Well, that's fine. You'll get no argument from me on Wirtz and Pully. Either way, I'll continue to go to Hawks games. Why? AHL games aren't nearly as good. The Wolves are a show, not a hockey game -- IMO, of course. I get into the Hawks games for $8 bucks, so money ain't a big issue for me (at least, for the next five years). And like I said, I enjoy watching this team. I'm lukewarm on Sutter, but I love watching Ruutu and Bell and Calder and Arny. And hopefully, in the next couple of years, guys like Dave Bolland and Dustin Byfuglian and Brent Seabrook and Barker...

Nuke, by management, I believe that Tom meant Dale Tallon. And whether you choose to believe it or not, he's doing a decent job. Pully and Wirtz, they suck, you're not going to get much of an argument from either of us. I'm just saying some people take the whole Wolves vs. Hawks thing a little too far. The Wolves aren't better than the Hawks, neither is the AHL level of hockey. That's all I'm arguing...

Speaking of another Reds' player... They are really pissing off Adam Dunn a whole lot -- time to arrange a three-way trade that sends Konerko packing, and Adam Dunn to Chicago... (Got this from BTF) Anyways, the story is from the Dayton Daily News (Link, registration required). Here's the jist of it: Time to swoop him up, Kenny!

Thanks knight and Jab for the links...

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 08:01 PM) Boy o' Boy, with the off day, these trades just keep coming and coming. All I will say is 40-19. Exactly what I was thinking, Tony. You guys do realize that Yahoo has a nice fantasy baseball program, and MVP 2005 was released a while ago, right?

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 07:54 PM) I'm thinking he will wind up as a great 1B prospect personally, and we are dying for some prospect depth there. So if we make the right sell, I think it could work out. Oh and the money wouldn't hurt either ;-) Can the Sox offer him some kind of deal where, after his baseball career (however long that is) is done, they'll pay for all of his college expenses? I assume he's already on a full-ride to Texas anyways, but maybe that would appeal to him, as well as become an instant millionaire?
-
QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 07:49 PM) And you believe him? Saying he won't trade Everett is one way to get teams to offer more for him. Frank has 2 pinch-hit homers already and needs to be our DH everyday. That would leave little playing time for Everett. Although, it's nice to have Everett as insurance in case we have an injury. I didn't see *most* of the game last night, did Thomas really go yard?

As far as shootouts go, here are pretty much my thoughts put very well into words by The Hockey News: I know it's opinion vs. opinion, but it's simply not right to end a game after 65 minutes with a skills competition. How many extra fans does the NHL think it's going to draw just because the game might end on a shootout? I dunno about you guys, but I'd hate to see after 65 minutes of the Hawks fighting tooth and nail against Detroit, them go to a shootout -- Arny-Ruutu-Daze-Bell-Calder are not going to beat many teams in a shootout. As far as solutions, I agree with Mike -- go with the 3-2-1-0 point system. 3 for the regulation win, 2 for the OT win, 1 for the OT loss/tie, 0 for a regulation loss. If it ends in a tie, so beit, but don't allow another team to get the extra point 'cause they have more 'skilled' players...

QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 06:44 PM) I won't disagree about the quality of play, but I admit there are times where I found ECHL much more exciting than NHL. Mostly because you see these guys go balls out because they WANT to make the show more than anything (I rarely see that kind of heart in the NHL - sometimes, but not as often). To each their own though on this. Fair enough. Anyways, I see what you're saying about the ECHL trying harder. Back when the Hawks had guys like Korolev and Karpotsev (::shutters:, you'd see (Karp at least) dogging it a ton. Hell, Pat Foley even had like a two minute long rant on Karpotsev after he got traded. Ahh, good times...
-
QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 06:22 PM) As does MLB VS AAA baseball. AHL is basically AAA and ECHL is AA (basically). Yeah, there are a few has beens and never will bes, but I still enjoy AHL and ECHL. That's the thing. I can see b****ing out Wirtz, he sucks, yeah, I think everybody knows that. But the level of hockey is nowhere near as good on the AHL level as it is in the NHL level. Even the Hawks play a much higher level of hockey than a team like the Wolves...

I'm waiting for the "Bring up Gio" thread... "Uh, yeah, maybe since he's so young, he could do for us what Dontrelle did for the Marlins. Yeah, Yeah!"

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jun 9, 2005 -> 12:30 AM) You can call the Wolves scrubs all you want to. They win hockey games and keep their fans entertained and that's more than I can say about the Slacks. If this were 10 years ago I would totally agree but not now. I've wasted far too much of my money going to see the Slacks get shut out at home and skate around like they have better things to do. Maybe some fresh faces will help matters on the enthusiasm side but half of the players you mentioned will be gone as soon as it comes time for their first big contract. Its all a question of whether I'm getting my money's worth and when I go to a Wolves game I pay half as much and I go away happy. The last time I walked away happy from a Hawks game was back in 1996. Fine, then don't go to Hawk games. I get a student discount and a ticket for $7 bucks, to see much better hockey -- whether or not you agree with it, the AHL pales in comparison to the NHL.

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 11:35 PM) Real hockey? What's more entertaining? A team that charges big money for everything from parking to admission to beer which lays down for NHL powerhouses like the Columbus Blue Jackets and loses 2-0 with like 15 shots on goal or a minor leauge team that actually cares about winning and is in the championship series as we speak? My vote goes to the latter. If you want to see minor league scrubs who can't make it in the NHL, fine with me. I'll stick with Ruutu, Vandermeer, McCarthy, Arny, Calder, and Bell, along with the influx of guys like Seabrook and Barker. Owner aside -- yes, we realize he's s***, but for the first time in awhile, this team is cleared of crappy veterans like Korolev and Krapotsev. b**** at Wirtz all you want, but leave the players out of it, 'cause they're much more fun than watching AAAA scrubs.

QUOTE(quickman @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 10:47 PM) I can't help it... Does he have the same upside and the same promise as Joe Borchard? Sorry couldn't help it. We got burned on giving borchard big money, we won't chase this guy. Danks isn't getting $5+ million bucks, but I'd hope the Sox are offering right around $2 million... Simply put, they get this guy in a Sox uniform, and this turns into a real, real good draft, without having any sandwich picks/2nd rounders -- which, would be extremely impressive.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 11:12 PM) They were also looking at a goal that was 4 inches higher. That better not happen. Smaller pads, that's good. No more Giguere bulls***. But, to f*** around with the nets like that -- yuck. I doubt they'll go that far, but who knows...

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 09:59 PM) I'll bet you would have gotten the same reactions here in January of 1995 if this place existed. Fine, you don't like hockey? Go away, we really don't give a flying f***. You see an NHL thread, don't like the NHL, yet post stupid s*** in it? GMAFB... Hooray! No hockey this winter was a real drag, I can't wait to see the young Hawks next year...

QUOTE(Randar68 @ Jun 8, 2005 -> 05:13 PM) I'm with ya. Although last night Cotts looked like a freaking STUD! He's so good when he works fast and challenges hitters. No one can hit his fastball. If he learns to paint that pitch wherever he wants it (and he's getting better), he's going to be a real tough pitcher. Hell, he's even throwing a decent offspeed pitch (can't tell what it is, changeup, slider, curve?), but that fastball just blows hitters away.

Can you tell us a little about what pitches you throw? And, what would you say is your 'best' pitch, your 'out' pitch? -Keith
