  1. Yeah, Carrillo looks real impressive on the scouting tapes. Broadway shows a real nice breaking pitch in his videos. Townsend has a real, real good breaking ball in his, too -- decent fastball. Torra didn't look that great, but the highest he hit on the gun was like 90 -- so, I'm guessing it was just a bad day at the ballpark or something.
  2. QUOTE(dasox24 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 03:57 AM) Then I guess your man is Lance Broadway, who by the way I'm really warming up to. I've got this feeling that he's gonna be one of the better ones out of this draft. Since you've brought up Torra a week or so ago, I've really warmed up to him. I luv warming up...
  3. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 03:29 AM) Timo showing his amazing versatility by swinging at the first pitch he sees. I bet he just wanted to get back into the dugout to finish off what he started with Ozzie. He showed some real nice veteran presence there, too, swinging at that first pitch and grounding out weakly.
  4. My brother and I were watching UNC face Florida (or it might have been Notre Dame). Anyways, he said that the kid on UNC is one of the best sophomores in college baseball -- can't think of the name right now, but he's a southpaw. He looked pretty good, too -- and, it's real nice 'cause they're broadcasting it in high definition.
  5. QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 02:59 AM) Anyone know what the projection is for Ryan Mullins out of Vanderbilt?? 73rd best player available per BA.
  6. QUOTE(kman @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 02:19 AM) juan uribe My |n****! I know you're just kidding, but don't say that. Nice job, Juan and AJ.
  7. It's not a big deal to me, but is there any reason why Garcia isn't running out any of his groundballs today?
  8. How about a three-way deal, where we send Paul Konerko to the Mets for a top prospect (Petit -- isn't that the kid's name), Petit's sent to Tampa Bay along with Sean Tracey, and we get back Aubrey Huff? Ok, wishful thinking. Anyways, Andy Marte, the Braves 3rd-base stud prospect is getting called up 'cause Chipper Jones is going on the DL. I'll have to catch a Braves game sometime this week.
  9. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 12:43 AM) college is a little different than the minors or majors. Hell different sport but in football how many heisman winners end up being nobodies in the NFL...... I realize that, but you're making it seem like Townsend doesn't have real good stuff -- when, by all reports, he does (EDIT: I should say, throughout his college career, he did -- I stand corrected, as it seems like his latest workouts weren't very impressive at all). And, I'm warming up a lot on Torra. Here's the latest on him from BA: That's extremely impressive, and he's just a spot below Carrillo now. (One more EDIT) Jim, looks like that Broadway guy is making a lot of heads turn. Here, from BA again:
  10. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 12:12 AM) isnt Townsend's fastball really straight too? I just hear so many good stuff about this Cesar Carillo kid and the fact he is a white sox fan is just a plus. And for those people who like wins this kid is a proven winner as anyone... i mean damn he has 1 loss his whole college career and that happened this year. Well, he must have been doing something right in college -- over 11 K's/9 in both years, he was obviously fooling someone...
  11. Hey -- From a not-a-huge basketball fan here, is the Detroit/Miami game on TV tonight?
  12. PHfan, I won't mind them taking Carrillo. It's just, they don't really sound sold on his curveball or changeup, and, while they rate his fastball as a good pitch in the scouting report, it's not good enough to crack the top five for college pitcher's best fastball? I dunno, maybe I'm reading too much into a scouting report and a couple of articles I've read on him, but he doesn't seem like a guy who's going to end up being a top of the rotation pitcher.
  13. QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 10:46 PM) I've heard from multiple sources that he definitely can. I don't see how we can go wrong with this guy. Not a very high ceiling, that's his problem. Seems like he has good stuff, but nothing real spectacular. Certainly a safe pick...
  14. That's what I'm thinking, Jim. Carrillo seems like a pretty safe pick, high floor, but a low ceiling type of a guy. I'd certainly get more excited if they went with a more 'ballsy' (for lack of a better word) pick in Torra and Townsend (though Torra might be a reach), though 'ballsy' doesn't always mean smart. Re: Townsend, if his velocity isn't back in the mid-low 90s, don't take him. But I (and apparently Jim, too) have read somewhere that he's got it back up to where it was. I'm not all that concerned about the year layoff (maybe I should be?), though, so that probably sways my opinion to a more pro-Townsend. And, this may seem obvious, but I think the Sox are hoping that a guy like Zimmerman or Clement falls to #15 (and yes, Cerb, I realize he won't get there). If not, they'll go with Bog or Carrillo.
  15. Can someone, who, maybe knows more about Torra than I do, talk about him? All I can really do with these guys is read the scouting reports and stats, so I don't think I can really give a fair judgement just by looking at a statline...
  16. QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 07:08 PM) Can someone give me an approx. time of the Sox first pick? How long does a first rounder usually take? It goes by pretty quickly. Certainly not nearly as long as the NFL draft... I think at most, a pick might take five minutes. It usually flies by, though...
  17. QUOTE(JimH @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 06:38 PM) The draft starts at 1 pm EST Tuesday, is that correct? Also, what do we know about this Lance Broadway, the guy who Wilder was watching over the weekend? Sheesh, Lance Broadway ... sounds like a porno screen name or something. 48th ranked prospect by Baseball America. 6-4, 185. 125 K's in 93 IP this year, 30 BB's. 12-1 record, 1.94 ERA. Described as a guy "who succeeds more with polish than overwhelming stuff. His fastball is just average, but he has a plus curveball that he can locate in and out of the strike zone. His delivery and command are solid, and his makeup is a huge asset. He's developing a changeup and is gaining more confidence in that pitch. He has a strong, lean fram and there may be a little more velocity in him." (All, per Baseball America). I bolded the part about his makeup 'cause you know the Sox love a guy with a real good makeup.
  18. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 06:31 PM) Thats a bigger questionmark than Carillo whose already very round. If Carillo was 6-3, he'd be a top 10 pick, probably a top 5 pick. I think he's a huge value pick if he's available, but someone may snag him before he gets to the Sox. Honestly, I think I've got my heart set on two guys: Matt Torra and Wade Townsend. Torra is listed as the #2 college pitcher for Best Command, #5 for Best Breaking Ball, #5 for Best Fastball. It seems the only knocks on him is that he might be a little worn out just because of college. If that's the only reason to knock him, he must be doing something right. Good build at 6-3, good fastball, real good breaking ball -- he seems like a better pick than Carrillo or Bogusevic, but that's JMHO.
  19. I still want Townsend. I just think that once he gets back into the 'swing of things', he'll get that velocity back up to where it was (low-mid 90s). And, maybe I'm wrong in thinking that, but he must have been doing something right to be striking out over 12/9 IP and 11/9 IP in 2003 and 2004.
  20. QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 05:20 AM) I have to say I'm not nearly as high on Townsend as most of you seem to be. Not only the year off, but during some mid-May workouts his fastball sat at 85-89mph. With most scouts thinking his intensity will lead to the pen for him, I say no thanks. I would rather end up with Carillo, Clement, or get Ryan Zimmerman if he slides. Zimmerman won't be 21 until late September. I thought I'd' heard that he was back up to the mid-90s...? Anyways, if Zimmerman somehow falls to #15, they must take him. Must.
  21. And on John Sickels' blog, they had a mock draft in which the Sox grabbed Wade Townsend. Jeff Clement went fourth to the Nats.
  22. Thanks for the great info, Jim and Tom. Tom, how hard does Reynoso throw? While I'm not the biggest fan of just 'velocity' alone, it'll be nice to have a couple of fireballers in the Sox 'pen (hopefully) in the coming years.
  23. I won't mind Clement. Baseball America seems to like him a whole lot, saying he's improved in just about every area (handling the stick at the plate, plate discipline, defense). Though, if Townsend falls to #15, I really hope they don't pass on him. And Cheat, if you get to reading this, I had two Draft Previews just about done for a diary on your blog, and both times, my laptop (actually, not mine, my brother's) just shut off on me. It's probably not a big deal to you, but I might try it again tonight on a different computer, if not, then my apologies. I was really looking forward to seeing what people thought about it...
  24. QUOTE(SEALgep @ Jun 5, 2005 -> 08:28 PM) You don't have to buy it, you don't get a say in the matter. Neither do I, but I'm not crying about it. We're in first, but lets focus on Willie's limited contributions this year to getting us there. It's a message board. It was made to talk about the team and their moves. I'm not crying about it, just disputing a real stupid move by Kenny Williams and co.
