QUOTE(fathom @ May 29, 2005 -> 07:24 PM) PK's a FA at the end of this year! That's why he's not exactly a hot commodity for any team looking to rebuild. Also, Field is going to have to start to produce a little more in the minors before he has a lot of trade value. He's not exactly lighting up the minors. Fields is a first-round pick of last year -- regardless of whether or not he's producing right now, he has a lot of value...

QUOTE(qwerty @ May 29, 2005 -> 07:18 PM) I still don't understand why they would trade for a player that is a free agent at the end of the year. They want top notch prospects ( major league ready) in return for helton. Not the paul konerko's of the world. Isn't Konerko a year or two younger than Helton? I'm just saying, involving Konerko would make the trade look better for the PR aspects of Colorado. Plus, he's not "that" bad of a player, either. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't balk at a deal that started with Tracey/Fields...

QUOTE(fathom @ May 29, 2005 -> 07:16 PM) In retrospect, the trade wasn't that much to give up. However, at the time, it was almost a consensus opinion that we gave up a ton of talent to get Garcia. Good point. Helton or not, if Konerko doesn't produce, Kenny isn't just going to say, "well, he's been here for a while and he's sort of a face on this franchise so we're going to live through his suckiness". Aubrey Huff could be an option. I doubt they'd go young at first with a guy like Ryan Howard... Or, they could trade for an OF'er and move Jermaine Dye to first. There's a lot of options, and I'm sure Kenny is looking at every "available" player.

QUOTE(fathom @ May 29, 2005 -> 07:13 PM) Rockies have Ian Spencer as their 3rd baseman of the future. There's no comparison between him and Fields. If we get someone as top-notch as Helton, we're going to have to say goodbye to 2 of the 3: McCarthy, Anderson, Sweeney. Remember how much we gave up for Garcia last year? The package for Garcia wasn't huge, and it looks a lot better now that Olivo has been absolutely atrocious in Seattle. Reed was the only top-notch guy we gave up, as Morse was viewed (by some here) as a guy that was still developing and still, might have to make the move to a different position. They could always move Fields to first, too. I think Konerko/Fields would be a good start...

QUOTE(JimH @ May 29, 2005 -> 07:09 PM) Yes, I heard some of the same stuff in Tucson. As bad as the Rockies are, they love Helton, he's the face of their franchise. They'd have to be bowled over and blown away to trade him and at least for now I also heard they do not want to pick up any of his salary, they've taken a lot of heat for doing that. Yuck. If that's the case, then ya can't pick up a contract that big without some help from the team sending him over. But, if they were willing to pick up some of the contract, I'd start with a package of Konerko/Tracey. Hell, I wouldn't object to giving up someone like Josh Fields (yes, the first round pick) for Helton, if they ate a lot of it...

This inning was all made by Crede's sac fly, with getting one in and one over. He gets ripped a lot, but he deserves his dap when he does something good. Nice, Joe!

3-1 Sox! Uribe!
-
Awesome, Joe! One in, one over!

QUOTE(fathom @ May 29, 2005 -> 07:03 PM) Well, Delgado was a FA after the season, so there was no worry about his contract. As for Walker....the Rockies were willing to pick up a huge portion of his salary in a trade. The Rockies have already said they won't pick up any of Helton's contract if he's traded. I didn't hear that. I believe you, but do you got an article link to where they said it? Because, I'm not suggesting the Sox pick up the whole contract. They've picked up a big portion of the salary before, with Walker and Hampton, no reason to think they won't do it again -- IMO.

Wow, Jermaine. Best AB of the year for him, bar none.
-
AJ!!!!! And fathom, don't tell me that Kenny can't or won't do something (for better or for worse). We would have had one of Carlos Delgado or Larry Walker had either wanted to come here. Helton, Coors Field or not, is one of the best hitters in all of baseball. Obviously, money would have to come to us, but I'm almost 100% he's looking at Helton. You say "stuck" like it's a bad thing. Helton isn't a guy who puts up good numbers just 'cause he's at Coors. He is an elite hitter, probably top ten.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ May 29, 2005 -> 06:56 PM) Helton's not a reasonable option. He's also having a terrible year (for him), and it's likely teams with bigger pockets will go after him. If Kenny thinks that a bat like Helton can put us over the top, he's going to go for him, regardless of his contract.
-
QUOTE(JimH @ May 29, 2005 -> 06:52 PM) Stupid by Konerko. That was just dumb, what's he thinking there? I know it seems unrealistic... But I bet Williams is looking to Colorado at Helton. And yes, I know the contract structure. Kenny isn't a stupid man, he's definitely looking to upgrade 1B and 3B, especially if the duo there continue to be absolutely dismal offensively.

Two walks in a row, AND KONERKO IS SWINGING FIRST PITCH?!?!?!?!?!?! Get Gload up here right now, Konerko needs to ride the pine for a few days.

QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 29, 2005 -> 06:16 PM) Shouldn't you be in school, son? ??? That doesn't even make any sense, it's Sunday...

Isn't Sowers the kid that Cleveland grabbed, first-round last season? And, when is Gio going to get back in the rotation?

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ May 28, 2005 -> 06:18 PM) Two pitches later Willie had half of the RBI's last night. Funny, the fans of Timo have just... hid, really...

Jermaine Dye for Vernon Wells. Ok, so Riccardi wouldn't do that, but I would.

QUOTE(chi-guy2 @ May 28, 2005 -> 08:52 PM) we wont get sweeney, i forsee huff or chavez What else do you foresee, Mr Williams?
-
Williams doesn't impress me as much as he impresses you guys. He was striking out just over 7 per nine innings in the minors, and about three walks per nine. The BB's are decent, yet it looks like his stuff isn't awesome if he's not even striking out a guy per inning... JMHO, but still a good trade for the Cubs. If they fall off the map, I wouldn't be surprised to see a guy like Maddux gone too...

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ May 28, 2005 -> 04:55 PM) Mr. Harris is known for many things...drawing walks is not one of them. Of all the regulars, only Konerko and Lee drew more walks than Harris last season (Thomas did, but that's a given).

GAME THREAD 5-27-2005 SOX VS RANGERS

Timo should get a hit here, because he hasn't been good in clutch situations this year, but he usually is, and clutch is something that doesn't leave you. You either have it or you don't. Right? Right? -

Jabroni, shouldn't Pablo be taking pitches? After all, we need runners on base... Where's the b****-out? -
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 28, 2005 -> 01:57 AM) One thing I stay away from is guys that had there arms destroyed in college. Some schools work there pitchers too hard and for whatever reason I've seen at least some of those guys come to the minors and there velocity tends to dissapear. Here's their exact quote about the "strain" on his arm: He had also pitched several games with pitch counts of more than 140 or 150 pitches -- a workload that has raised eyebrows among scouts. I'm skeptical; he had a 4.90 ERA last year, and now he's down to under two? Plus questions about the college workload? I guess there's questions about all the guys we might possibly take at #15, so... I guess that I really wish that at pick #15, Stephen Drew or Jered Weaver interrupts the conference call and say they're no longer represented by Boras. BA makes it sound like Baltimore really lowballed him, saying that they offered him, something like $500K less than what is supposed to be given/offered at where he was selected (eighth?).
