  1. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 06:48 PM) What would you rather spend our money on other than the bullpen? What other need do we have at the major league level that deserves more attention right now? You keep saying don't sign relievers to multi-year deals, but how else do you expect us to improve the bullpen in 2011 if we don't have any options available in our minor league system? I don't think we can afford to trade what little minor league talent we have for a reliever. I don't see another choice but to overpay in free agency, especially since we're all in 2011. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 06:50 PM) I know you can no long post without using some extreme hyperbole, but give it a f***ing rest. The White Sox will have a payroll somewhere around the 120 million mark once the 2011 season starts. If they are moderately successful, it should stay around that point for the next 3-5 years. Will a two year deal worth 4-6 million dollars for Will Ohman really prevent the Sox from anything? Really? I'm not saying it will be a great signing if it happens, but it fills one of the final needs for this team( a solid LOOGY) and shouldn't hinder the Sox from making other moves. Relax. How many times does it have to be f***ing proven that signing mediocre relievers to multi-year deals rarely turns out well? Kalapse has done an excellent job of backing this up with solid data. Sure, it's not YOUR money so it's easy to say whatever. But a franchise that's efficient and run properly should be able to produce a competent loogy from within.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 05:44 PM) Sergio Santos, Gregory Infante, Chris Sale, and Anthony Carter say hi. Then why waste coin on Ohman?
  3. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 05:38 PM) We actually had both of you beat in the White Sox offseason thread. Please god not a multi-year deal on a medicore reliever. What's so f***ing hard about producing one or two from within? The Braves and Padres sure don't have a problem with this.
  4. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 02:17 PM) To keep our physical therapy program, we need to go through a periodic accreditation visit from a section Department of Education. They determine if we have a quality program or not. If they determine we don't, they can shut us down. So I need to be the perfect a** kisser which I'm not very good at. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 02:18 PM) The process of being accredited. An accredited school (you're a prof. ptact, right?) has met the standards of some national standards-setting group. Degrees from unaccredited schools aren't worth much and would probably have a hard time getting accepted at other institutions. It takes a ton of paperwork and effort and if you lose your accredation, you can be in serious trouble. From a Frontline I watched on for-profit schools, an accredited program at a small college is worth something like $10M. Oh, yes. I love knowledge and improving my VOcabulary.
  5. QUOTE (DOWNTOWN PANTHER @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 02:13 PM) As a Reds fan we have had 1 winning since 1999. So I will take a couple post season runs and trade them for a little "business" as usual a couple years down the road. Panther, may I ask why you as a Reds fan decided to join a Sox board? Are they like your second favorite team? Just curious.
  6. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 02:10 PM) YES! Singles are SEXY! I know I'm over doing it but we are sweating out an accreditation visit and I'm full of nervous energy so don't take it personally. J4L rule number one. Do not use words that I don't know the meaning of. What the hell does accerdiplation or whatever you said means?
  7. QUOTE (DOWNTOWN PANTHER @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:59 PM) I have never posted any opinion of mine on Dusty, but I will say that I was very pleased with him this season. Reds fans are fast to second guess and pound on the manager for his ability to manage a pitching staff and lineup. This season was no exception. I think that Dusty did a tremendous job of managing the staff and pen. I look simply at wins and losses, and this year he had a big impact. For this team he is a perfect candidate IMO. Right now the Reds have a very solid fusion of young talent and veteran leadership which Dusty blended very nicely. In 2011 I think the Reds are the team to beat in the Central. I think Dusty can make a run this year at October baseball, and the staff has a very high ceiling. I love the Reds. Post more, my friend. Anyway, could we get Chapman for Juan Pierre? I promise you he's really good. He hits a lot of sexy singles and steals a lot of bases. He would be an upgrade in LF. I promise. Cross my heart and hope to die.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:46 PM) Holliday's not a bad fielder. I hate how that one ball he took off the crotch in the NLDS gives people the impression he's bad at fielding. lmao. That was funny as s***.
  9. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:43 PM) I don't know about the Cardinals, their offense should be better, but man that OF defense is going to be bad with Berkman & Holliday. Colby is gonna be busy. This is true. But they've still got like 4 of the top 10 players in the division on the same team. They're better than the Cubs.
  10. Don't we have Pena [gulp] to fill this role? And I hate Pena.
  11. Nice poster. I now have a new screensaver.
  12. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:09 PM) A lot of the Cubs fans I know who aren't baseball stupid hate it. Perhaps they're overrating their own prospects, but I think they know this team isn't good enough right now to go and try to compete this year. Hendry's probably gonna sign Garza to an extension, which would be stupid considering Garza isn't the type of pitcher you should build around. You actually know Cubs fans that aren't baseball stupid? QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:17 PM) So wouldn't he only be arb-eligible for two more years? Or is his service time not over 5 after the next two years? I'm looking at Cots. It says he has 3 arb years remaining. His service time is only at 2.149. I thought he had been around longer than that for some reason.
  13. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:09 PM) But his lifetime slugging % is only .459 because hit hit a lot of singles. Can he still be considered a great hitter? Singles are SEXY!!! We're not talking JP here. Even his singles suck.
  14. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:12 PM) I thought Garza already has one year of arb-eligible season under his belt. He does.
  15. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 12:46 PM) Yeah I can see how they can compete, I just don't feel this move jumps them up significantly. There's just a ton of question marks in there, including health. Sure devil's advocate can be played for any team, but since we're discussing the Cubs, Zambrano is a complete question mark even with his last starts of the year in 2010, Silva is far from a guarantee, as is Wells, Dempster is good but again, 08 for him was probably more of an anomaly than an accurate reflection of what he really is. That line-up is just so full of ifs and maybes. Easily the best thing they have IMO is Marshall/Woods/Marmol for 7/8/9. Again, sure they can compete, but the NL Central is a tough division and I just don't think Garza makes them significantly better. I really think many people in the media, well let's face it Chicago is a bigger market than Milwaukee, are underplaying what the Brewers did... I mean, Markum and Greinke added, with Galardo (sp?) at 3 and Wolf at 4 is extremely good, and their line-up with Fielder, Braun, Weeks, Hart, etc. on paper is extremely solid. Also, they really got burned by Hoffman at the beginning of the season last year, he completely imploded and threw a bunch of stuff off. NL Central should be interesting this year. I don't know where they found John Axford last year. That dude's got some sick stuff.
  16. Can't deny this is a good move for the Cubs, too. But they're still a distant 4th behind the Reds, Brewers and Cardinals.
  17. I like the deal for the Rays. They're oozing starting pitching. I've read nothing but sparkling reports about Archer and Lee.
  18. QUOTE (Wanne @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 02:24 AM) That was some funny s*** in there Jordan! This was my favorite line: "Worst trade in the history of life". Willie had me rollin'. And you know how fathom is. He could turn a sexual encounter with Beyonce into a negative experience.
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 7, 2011 -> 01:59 AM) As good as Soriano is, $10 million for 70 innings that won't be pitched in the 9th is ridiculous. You can talk about how much a reliever is worth with regards to WAR all day, but at the end of the day, relievers get paid for WPA, and paying that for a guy to pitch the 8th inning would result in virtually little return on investment. It'd basically be a $10 million insurance policy on Mo. This is the first time we've agreed on something in months.
  20. QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 10:19 PM) First, the Big Hurt is in first ballot without question. His numbers compare with the best hitters of all time. And I'v said it before and I'll say it again. The old dinosaurs voting love the made up bullcrap like "feared hitter" and who was more feared than Frank in the 90's? Back to back MVP's (just go look at his OBP and slugging in those years and cry because you wish he was still around). He hit 500 home runs. Tons of walks, homeruns, RBI's, and for his speed had a great batting average. Basically, if you think the Big Hurt will not make the HOF first ballot for reasons athough true (media, injuries) then can't you say the same about Griffey (missed tons of games due to not being able to stay healthy)? In no way am I arguing the point, but I'm just saying... Second, Gwynn might be one of the most overrated players of my generation. Still HOF worthy, but Tim Raines was better. Third, I don't think if Bonds or Clemens gets in it paves the way for Sosa and Palmero (I think McGwire should be in FWIW). I don't think Sosa was GREAT (not good, GREAT) for that long. Were talking about a guy who MAYBE for 3 years you could say top 5 player (and this is before defense was an emphasis). Palmero is along the same lines for me. Good, steady career. No high peaks, but someone who was never a top 5 player for a few years in row. Certinly he wasn't even the best first baseman of his era (I'll take the Big Hurt and Bagwell along with Thome. No black man sounds more white than Tony Gywnn ever. This is fact. But he was an eight, I repeat, EIGHT time batting champion who has a career BA of .338 over 20 f***ing seasons. You must be crazy.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 07:17 PM) BTW, the news of the day is that Soriano would be willing to be a set up guy for exactly one team... The Yankees. A $10 to $12 million dollar a year set-up man when you already have a closer making $15 million. So that's almost $30 million dedicated to two relievers. That would be fiscally irresponsible even for the Yankees and clearly a panic move to counter what the Red Sox have done.
  22. Forgive me if this has been asked and answered before. And I'm not complaining. But why doesn't the search function work?
  23. I wasn't even legally able to drink when Brandon Wood was drafted. He's the text book definition of AAAA player. Please let's not even mention him in the same sentence with Morel. Which is what I just did.
  24. Between these two trades, the Thornton deal and the CQ deal, though CQ has sucked ass since 2008, KW was in a f***ing zone. What happened?
  25. Here's the original McCarthy/Danks thread for those wanting to reminisce. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=56073 Tried to find the Garcia for Floyd/Gonzalez thread but came up empty. Nevermind. Found it. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=55750 lol. These are too damn funny.
