  1. I'd gladly take a .750ish OPS with the projected stellar defense in year one from Morel. This franchise desperately needs to infuse some cheap/controllable talent from within. If Beckham bounces back and with how cheap Ramirez is given his production you'd be getting a whole lot of bang for a cheap buck at three infield positions.
  2. You should've been here through the near epic collapse in 2005. All the choke avatars led by Tizzle were the stuff of legend. I think the dumbest thing I ever said was that I hoped the Sox did end up missing the playoffs so we could avoid an inevitable sweep by the Yankees, Red Sox or Angels. Another one was more recent in that I liked the Tony Pena deal. And I chastised anybody who said we gave up too much for a reliever. Pena sucks and Allen looks the part of a solid regular. I know there's a lot more dumbass gaffes from me. I'll do a google search later.
  3. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 03:29 PM) I really don't think Baines is a Hall of Famer either. The defense I hear most often is that he has the most hits for a player not in the HOF. That's great, good for him. And if he were inducted, then another guy would have the most hits for a player not in the HOF. Where does it end? There has to be a cutoff point, and Baines seems like the perfect place to start. You're going to rack up some hits when you play two damn decades. He doesn't even have one 30 HR season to his credit. No way is he a HOF.
  4. QUOTE (bighurt574 @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 01:26 PM) Thomas is a sure fire HOF'er, and it will happen within the first couple ballots, but I'm not sure about the very first time. While he wasn't hugely popular, if voters are going to keep penalizing players linked to steroids, maybe they'll be even quicker to vote for Thomas. I would bet good money that Thomas gets in before Bonds, Clemens, Sosa, Palmeiro, or McGwire. Edgar also isn't a great comparison, Thomas has 200 more hits, 200 more HR's, 450 more RBI's, and 2 MVP awards. I really want something bad to happen to Jason Giambi. Could you imagine just what 1 more MVP would look like on Frank's resume right now? No way a 3-time MVP doesn't get in on the first ballot. DH or not.
  5. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 03:22 PM) Just to clarify, as I'm sure a lot of you aren't aware of this, but a lot of people automatically associate Frank with steroids due to his size and such. It's retarded logic, but the fact that he was very outspoken against steroids is not a well known fact outside of our fanbase. I'm not sure how much the writers with the power to vote know about the situation, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out that many of them think the same way. Then they're f***ing idiots and you [not YOU] may as well associate any player that's ever been big and strong to ever play the game to steroids. Frank was an all-state TE at his HS and played football at Auburn. Just look at any of his old baseball cards. Dude was a monster from day 1. He wasn't some skinny f*** [sosa, Bonds] that ain't a whole bunch of spinach and became Popeye overnight.
  6. QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 02:10 AM) The idea that Alomar was a "negative" defender statistically really puts a damper in how I value statistic defensive metrics. Holy s***! I thought you were kidding. I've become a big proponent of UZR the last couple years. But in this case UZR is going to have to kiss my f***ing black ass. Alomar is the best defensive second baseman I've ever seen. Baseball Reference's defensive stats also paint Alomar's D in a negative light. Oh, well, they can kiss my ass, too. QUOTE (Tex @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 01:00 PM) The LPGA says hello. I would rather they reward steller behavior and character than just punish bad behavior. I'd love to see Baines in. Then they may as well shut the HOF down for eternity. Baines was a very good player. But a HOF? Me no think so.
  7. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 02:48 PM) He has been one of the FIVE best relievers in baseball the last five years when healthy. I am dumbfounded as to the lack of interest. Since 2006, he has a 2.53 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and a 3.60 K/BB ratio. And he has been healthy since 2006 every year except 2008. He is the rare exceptions of relievers who don't have up-and-down careers, he has been dominant every year he has been healthy. What gives? God I wish we didn't have Teahen, that's $5 million that could go to Soriano. Another $8 million from a particular trade that I won't dare mention would be nice as well. But I wouldn't want to spend it on Soriano. And I'm a huge fan of the guy.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 10:05 AM) I'm somewhat baffled that he isn't being pursued more aggressively by teams? Why is that? Admittedly I haven't been following the guy over the years but his numbers are quite impressive. Only one closer in baseball is worth what Soriano and Boras are seeking. It's been proven too many times over the last decade or so that they're are much more efficient, and importantly cheaper, ways to go about finding a competent closer. Brian Wilson was a 24th round pick. Joe Nathan was a 6th round pick. Neftali Feliz was an amateur FA. Andrew Bailey was a 6th round pick. Joakim Soria was an amateur FA. Ryan Franklin was a 23rd pick. Heath Bell was an amateur FA. Hell, Trevor Hoffman was an 11th round pick. You can take nobodies like Kevin Gregg, Jon Rauch and David Aardsma and mold them into competent closers. Dishing out 10 plus million over 3-5 years to any closer, especially a closer with Soriano's injury history, rarely turns out well. See Francisco Rodriguez.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 09:11 AM) I'm not buying that Hudson is who we saw in Arizona. That was the best run of his career, including the minors. The guys college numbers weren't even close to that. His peripheral numbers are off of the charts. He is due for a pretty big regression to the means if you ask me. Way to go out on a limb there. lol. Of course he's not going to sport a 1.69 ERA over the course of an entire season. But 11 starts is basically two months of sustained dominance. His peripheral numbers have always been off the charts, minors and to this point in the majors. So I don't see where this 'regression' you speak of comes into play. I'd say an ERA in the mid 3's with a K/9 of 8+ and a WHIP around 1.35 or so is more than attainable. And at $450K, I'd gladly take that.
  10. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 02:27 AM) no big deal, but u'd be frustrated by rose the last three games if he was on your fantasy team. Funny thing is I'm not sure if I was playing or not. lol.
  11. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 03:18 AM) I'm just arguing the point that Jackson actually a bargin, and not being overpaid. And I wonder what a 4.0 WAR in the NL translates to in the AL. Yes. Another AL/NL reference. I love originality.
  12. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 03:13 AM) In his 4 full seasons in the bigs, his worst season produced a 1.3 WAR, and his last 2 seasons he has produced a 3.5+ WAR. So, if 10.1 WAR ($43.3M) over his 4 seasons in the bigs is "mediocre at best", then your standards are quite impressive. I just find it so hypocritical of those who support Jackson and his 'awesome' stuff when we had another guy that went by the name of Javy Vazquez who used to get chastised by this board like no SP we've had in years. He sported WAR of 3.6, 4.8 and 5.1. Always raked up huge K numbers and had solid peripherals across the board. But all we ever heard was that he was a dickless choker and EVERYBODY wanted him gone. At least my b****ing is consistent. You guys all over the place.
  13. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 12:43 AM) $8.5M is really pretty cheap for Jackson. Last year, he put up a 3.8 WAR, which is worth about $15M. For comparison sake, Buehrle put up a 3.8 WAR last year, and was making $14M. All Jackson has to do, is put up a WAR of 1.9 next season to earn his contract, and considering he doubled that last year, he is fully capable of accomplishing that. Jackson at $8.5M or whatever he is making is actually a pretty good price, and to be a Type-A, I believe you have to finish in the top 20% in your league. For reference, Bronson Arroyo was considered a Type-A Free Agent, and he put up a 1.7 WAR. So I think the chances of Edwin earning Type-A status is actually pretty likely. And Hudson put up a 2.3 WAR in just 95 innings for, what, 450K. A full season's worth and there's no reason he couldn't sport a 4.0 WAR better. He's got the minor league pedigree and has dazzled in 12 of his 15 career starts.
  14. QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jan 6, 2011 -> 12:37 AM) I'm guilty of commenting on it in the past few days (today included), but I agree that what's done is done and the discussion has likely been exhausted. My only defense is I didn't post here in July/August unless I was drunk (and thus don't remember). That's a perfectly acceptable excuse. Never explain yourself for that. I was born drunk.
  15. I have no concerns whatsoever about Adam Dunn. He's as sure a bet as any player in the game not named Pujols.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 10:47 PM) Um, John Danks? Well I no longer considered B-Mac a prospect at the point of that trade. But I can give you that. My point was Wite, for some reason unknown, thinks we'd have viable replacements if a player or two went down in-season. I challenged him to give some examples.
  17. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 10:20 PM) You've perfectly described exactly what the White Sox do, and then say that you wish the White Sox did that. No, they haven't. They trade away young talent for broken down, past their prime vets for the most part. Jim Thome being the only real exception. Or if you want to go back to '04 you can say Freddy Garcia. Wite, you know I respect you. But WTF are you talking about? I challenge you to give me just three examples in the last 5 years or so in which a regular went down or underperformed and the Sox were able to call up a player from the system and he performed at a replacement level. We have nobody that could do that if a regular went down. I will not do cartwheels over signing Jesse Crain to a 3-year, 13 million dollar deal. I just won't. Chances are it will end badly. Yes, I love the Dunn signing and have made that well known. And will all due respect, I don't care if people think I'm a perpetual whiner and that I'm never satisfied. I'm sick of getting butt-f***ed by the same team over and over and over and over and over again. If the Sox fall short to the Twins again, BLOW IT UP.
  18. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 10:00 PM) Edwin put up good numbers with the Sox but the teams he faced were sort of a joke. (DET 4 times, BAL 2 times, CLE 2 times, KC once, OAK once, and an injury riddle BOS team once). Hopefully he turned a corner, but I remain highly skeptical. Meanwhile Hudson bamboozled offenses like the Reds twice, the Brewers, Rockies and that team that won the World Series twice as well.
  19. QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 09:24 PM) Excuse or not, the Brewers are worse than anybody IMO. They had a weak system coming into the offseason, and traded (according to BA's mailbag) their top 3 prospects this offseason. Yes, but they've used their system to supplement their major league team. They already had homegrown stars such as Fielder, Braun, Weeks, Hart and Gallardo. Now they've built a top 5 pitching staff in all of baseball because they had the assets in the farm to do so. That's what a system is for. Not just for one or the other. But for a combination of both. And I will never be satisfied until the White Sox realize this.
  20. QUOTE (gatnom @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 09:35 PM) I have to agree with Milkman here. Watching people belittle Hudson because of 3 starts and playing in the NL drives me absolutely insane. It's one thing if you have a hard on for Edwin Jackson because Coop "fixed" him, but it doesn't mean you have to go and try to justify the trade by saying Hudson is some terrible pitcher. I think Milkman just hates the subject all together. And that's fine. I had sorta forgotten about it until SS2K5 or whoever it was broke the REAL story. Now I will unleash my fury upon Soxtalk since KW doesn't live next door to me.
  21. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 07:18 PM) Jackson is/was better than Hudson was last year. We were going for the division win last year. Jackson will most likely be better than Hudson this year. We are trying to win the division this year. Pretty simple to me. He didn't trade f***ing Nolan Ryan away, he traded a pitcher with 30 ML innings under his belt. I give KW the benefit of the doubt every time, and still will until Hudson becomes a legit top of the rotation starter. The number times he's fleeced organizations vastly outweighs the number of "OMG we traded away the greatest prospect of allllll time" trades. On no planet was Jackson better than Hudson last year. Jackson has never had an 11-start run like Hudson did last year. And before you go into the AL/NL crap. Check the teams each pitcher faced after the trade and tell me who pitched against tougher teams. Hint, it wasn't Jackson.
  22. QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 08:49 PM) rose in his last 3 games, 3 rebounds, 0 steals, 0 blocks. horrible. deng is a flat out choker, next time when the game is on the line, i much rather see scalabrine on the floor as to deng. Let's trade Rose for Griffin. And god damn. Rondo had 22 assists tonight.
  23. QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 07:44 PM) Yeah, we don't pick until 45th overall, so hopefully Jerry is open to going overslot. He's done it before, but it's definitely a rarity. I imagine we'll rank ahead of the Brewers, but that's it. I like Petricka and Blanke too, as well as Trayce, Miguel Gonzalez, and Jose Martinez. The Brewers have an excuse. Their system sucks because they've snagged two CY award winners, one who single-handedly led them to the playoffs in 2008 and another numbers 2 starter who will flourish in the NL Central. The Astros and Cardinals should battle it out for worst system on the planet with the Sox.
  24. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jan 5, 2011 -> 07:49 PM) I'd sell my soul for a blue chip catching prospect. Lord knows the Sox want one. They would have taken Grandal if he was available it seemed. One of Blanke, Gonzalez, Phegley, or Flowers suceeding would be nice. I'd sell my soul for any one of a blue chip catching, infield, outfield or SP prospect. And Infante being in the top 10 is a joke.
  25. Anyway, Bagwell was a hell of a player and until I see something legit connecting him to steroids I won't believe it. I loved watching him and those late 90's, early 2000's Astros teams.
