  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 13, 2014 -> 08:20 AM) Ervin Santana does not play for the White Sox. It would require bringing him in from outside the organization while also giving up a second round pick (which is something Rick Hahn has said he will not do). Adam Dunn is already in the organization and is signed for one more year and the Sox are going to try and save money before they outright release him. Do you not see the difference or should I spell it out with blocks and pictures? Stop bringing up Ervin Santana. You may as well suggest they sign Edgar Martinez or Randy Johnson because those two options have a more realistic chance of happening. At this point, I think it's time for blocks, pictures, and puppets.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 08:15 PM) The final scene of the show from the time they entered the drug den until they jumped in the car to escape was one shot I just watched this last night. I didn't notice the one long shot while I was watching it, but now I can look back and realize how well done it was.
  3. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 12, 2014 -> 06:46 AM) Exactly. He also was our best offensive player last year, but don't bother trying to convince TUC of that. He's proving to be almost as big of a troll as Marty lately. And to use his own phrase...haters gonna hate. *Insert photo of a speedo-clad Batman pushing Bullwinkle in a baby stroller*
  4. So a thread that is supposed to be about breakout players for the White Sox gets ruined because someone posted two words. I cannot wait until the season starts so we don't have to hear this s*** anymore. In regards to what this thread is about, I'd say we'll see some good things from Davidson. I think he'll be the starting third baseman when the season starts, and he'll have a decent year, batting .260ish with 15+ HRs.
  5. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 21, 2013 -> 01:17 AM) #39? I can't think of a single player that has worn that number. Didn't Jeff Liefer wear that number?
  6. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 11:37 AM) Please nobody take this troll's bait. I don't think I can go through this again. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Feb 11, 2014 -> 11:41 AM) I agree with your opinion and will still defend to the death your right to say it. I second these posts.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 10, 2014 -> 11:23 AM) i liked how Michonnes flashbacks changed from angle to angle. It was all happy and fun, then it started getting darker, then she had her sword, then the guys werent smiling and laughing anymore, and then the world was destroyed and they were dead. It was a quick descent into her mind, i thought it was really well done The first change caught me off guard. I was thinking to myself that something looked different, but... Then I caught on. It was very well done.

Strong return for The Walking Dead. It was good to finally see Michonne's backstory. Great episode of Shameless. The entire direction of the season changed in about 15 minutes. It will be interesting to see how Lip's roll will change.
  9. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 7, 2014 -> 06:17 AM) There is a lot of things that are discussed on this board that are never going to happen, and just because a White Sox official says something will not happen, it doesn't mean it will not. Offseason baseball is mostly hypotheticals. One of the great things about this board is that if there is something you would rather not read or discuss, you aren't obligated to open those threads, I agree. But this subject has been beat to death. I think we were spoiled with the action early in the off season, and now we expect something to happen!
  10. Maybe we should contact Rick Hahn and ask him to post something along the lines of "I said we will not sign a player that requires we give up a draft choice, so stop f***ing talking about it."
  11. Can we issue a moratorium on any more threads of this variety?
  12. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 02:15 PM) Am I the only one that doesn't particularly care for these outdoor games? I haven't been to a game, but I would imagine the sightlines aren't as good as indoors. And I think camera angles are better indoors. It was fun the first time, but IMO the NHL is overdoing it. I think it's just about being there. I went to the Hawks/Wings game at Wrigley. The seats we had would have been great for a ballgame, but for hockey they weren't very good. However, being there was very cool. I do agree the NHL might be overdoing it. I think one a year should be fine.
  13. QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) It's funny how people think a pitcher who was very good as recently as last year can't bring back a worthwhile return in trade within a year or two but somehow Dunn can. Whatever. At least we don't *have* to pay another pitcher, however we do *have* to pay Dunn. You guys are terrible. *sigh* Do we have to go over this again and have this thread closed, too? If we were talking about signing one of those guys to a 1-year deal, that makes a little more sense. But signing a guy to a multi-year contract in the hopes that he could be traded a few months later is ridiculous. However, I never said I thought Dunn could bring back anything decent in a trade. I know he couldn't. So let's all agree on one thing here: Adam Dunn is going to play for the White Sox this season...whether we like it or not.
  14. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 01:52 PM) Why don't you want Paulino in the rotation? That was a really good signing. Have you ever seen the guy pitch before? It doesn't matter. The Sox should sign Jimenez or that other guy to a 4-year/$50 million contract instead.

QUOTE (onedude @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 08:33 AM) True Detective is going American Horror Story route actually. Every season is a different case with different characters in a different city, and perhaps a different time period. I would like to see major movie actors take on the roles every year... I hadn't heard that. That will be interesting.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 08:06 AM) According to WGN, by Saturday night O'Hare should see a total of 7 new inches of snow, by Wednesday midnight a total of 17 inches. Followed by more negative temps. Worst winter EVER? This winter is being compared to the brutal winters of the late 70s. I wonder if we're slipping back into that type of pattern where we'll have a few winters in a row like this.

Pretty much every part of the country has to deal with some sort of extreme weather at some time throughout the year. What's unique about the Midwest is that we often deal with high heat and humidty; snow, ice, and frigid temps; and violent thunderstorms and tornadoes every year. Think about this: If around July 6 it gets to be in the upper 90s (which is entirely possible), that would be about a 115 degree temperature swing in 6 months. That sort of temperature span doesn't happen throughout the country. I've lived in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Alaska, Connecticut, Maryland, and Illinois, and the weather here is by far the most diverse.

I've been catching up with Workaholics on Amazon. I'm about 1/3 way through the third season. Glad to hear it's still as funny.
  19. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 08:26 AM) We have been doing just that for three years now. As you said, the biggest problem is live sports. If you can find workarounds or live without them on tv all the time (though you always get bears games), you probably won't miss it for a second. Yeah, football I'm not concerned about because I'd be able to see all of the Bears games and all of the Sunday games. It's the Sox games that are giving me pause. However, I look back at last summer and realize that I was often too busy to actually sit down and watch the games.
  20. I've been considering getting rid of cable and trying an HDTV antenna. I'm just tired of paying so much for a package of which I only watch a handful of channels. With Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon I would be able to watch just about all of the shows I normally watch. Even with subscriptions to all of those, I'd be saving a lot of money each month. One of the only things that's kepeing me from pulling the trigger is not being able to get Comcast Sports Net. Right there I'd be missing out on probably close to half the Sox games. And what sucks is that to get CSN I have to get a certain package with UVerse. Has anyone here cut the cord? And if so, what has been your experience?
  21. The Sox are in a situation now where they can afford to wait and see what they might get for the likes of De Aza, Gillaspie, and Keppinger. I don't think anyone, the Sox front office included, thinks that they'll be able to get much for any of them. But, they can still look for the best deal. Having these extra bodies right now is more of a "good" problem than a "bad" problem. It's not like they have to dump salary, and Keppinger is really the only one where money is a concern (I'm not talking about Dunn, so don't bring that up). The true purpose of moving any of these guys is going to be to clear space for the young talent that has been acquired...if they are ready. If and when any of these guys are moved, the reaction here on Soxtalk will most likely be a shoulder shrug because they're not going to get a great return. But, Hahn will still be looking for the best deal and won't be making a trade just to make a trade.
  22. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) Avasail Garcia was acquired for an over 30 pitcher with an injury history. A pitcher signed to a team-friendly, short contract. And that pitcher was having a pretty good season.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 01:40 PM) Amen to your last sentence. It's like there is a group on here who wants bad players cause it means we're still rebuilding. It's not like the cost of going to a game is going to decrease any, so why not put the heat on our front office to spend some money and get some more good players?? Who said anything about wanting bad players? Just because the "group" thinks that signing a 30+ year old starter for a 3-4 year deal at $12+ million per in the hopes that the Sox could flip him for young talent at the deadline is not a great idea, doesn't mean that aforementioned group wants the Sox to have a roster full of bad players. I for one would like to see what some of the young talent that we already have can do. Before a team signs or trades for someone, they have to do a risk/benefit analysis. I think that the risks outweigh the benefits when it comes to the SPs that some here want to see signed. There's much less risk with a 2nd round draft pick, and that pick can actually lead to greater benefits in the near term (trade for "now" talent) and in the future (bring up through the minors to the majors eventually). I just don't see why there's even an argument here. We're not talking about trying to get 3-5 more wins to get the team into the postseason. We're talking about improving a 99-loss team.
  24. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 10:40 AM) Again, the guys signed can be flipped for already developed players, or create an opportunity to flip someone else for players who are farther down the road in their development. Unless you want a 7 or 8 year rebuild, it is something that needs to be considered. Would you rather have A. Garcia or a second round pick? You're comparing what did happen to what could happen...if you were able to sign one of those available SPs to a deal as friendly as Peavy's and said pitcher performed as well as Peavy. First, they most likely wouldn's be able to sign one of those guys to a team-friendly deal. Second, chances are they wouldn't perform as well as Peavy. Now the Sox are stuck with an expensive, underperfoming pitcher who isn't very tradeable.
  25. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 07:39 AM) Code for not wanting to spend money. There were pitchers available who did not cost a pick. Oh, for God's sake, Marty. The Sox were willing to spend $20 million a year for Tanaka. Just because they haven't signed one of these purported great SPs available doesn't mean they're not willing to spend money. If they sign someone, they have to fit into their long term plan. Not the plan that a couple posters on Soxtalk think they should follow.
