And that's a White Sox Winner!!!
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 28, 2014 -> 10:20 AM) If Gillaspie proves merely capable against LHP, he can easily be a full time starter moving forward. I liked Gillaspie last year when he wasn't nearly as good. This season he's been great. I wonder if knowing Davidson is down in AAA as the potential future starter has anything to do with his performance? He's definitely made a big improvement at the plate, and his defense is quite good, too. I remember reading something last year about how he's very hard on himself. Maybe he's just worked his ass off to be better.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 27, 2014 -> 08:21 AM) I couldnt agree more. I really really liked it. I knew going in that . I like the twist that . I liked the nice balance between story and destruction, and it wasnt destruction just to have destruction. I liked the balance, too. And I thought the quick snippets of fights before switching to another scene really built on the suspense of the big final battle. My son and I (along with others in the theater) cheered when Godzilla

Attendance
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 27, 2014 -> 01:14 AM) Team is gonna have to win, win, win for the Sox to draw. You know that, Caufield. .500 is nice but not enough to bring most people out more than once or twice all year (unless they find free tix). I KNOW there are bargains. Nobody wants to sit in the upper tank (even though some of you say they are good seats). People want good seats and they don't want to spend money on a baseball game more than a time or two all year. It's like an outing to Great America. Same deal. That's my line and I'm sticking with it. I for one don't mind the upper deck, especially for the price. But, I'll agree with the fact that a lot of people just aren't going to want to spend money to go to too many Sox games. My family and I will probably make one this year, which is what we usually do every year. One a side note, Greg, you'll appreciate this. Going to see minor league baseball is cheap. I've been to two Joliet Slammers games this year, and front row along the third base line cost me $10. This past Friday, the team was playing the Normal Cornbelters. Ozzie Guillen's son plays on that team, and Ozzie was there watching. Took my kids over to meet him. He was very nice and took a picture with the kids.

Saw Godzilla in IMAX 3D this weekend. I really enjoyed it. I personally liked the way they slowly built to Godzilla's arrival and the build-up to the big battle at the end. There were some great scenes with the MUTO, too. The scene on the railroad bridge was awesome.

White Sox winner!
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 23, 2014 -> 02:13 AM) Sale was just nasty tonight. What's the stat for helmets flying off heads during swing and misses? He was making good hitters look like kids. That was great. He was firing 95 mph fastballs, and then started one hitter off with an 84 mph change. The guy swung so hard he lost his helmet and nearly came out of his shoes. His slider was devastating, too.

Game Thread 5/12: SOX @ OAK
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 12, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) We only have 1 cfer so ADA has to play. Doubt Garcia would unless it's an emergency. Are the Sox at the point where an example should be made of someone like De Aza? DFA his ass and bring up Danks again. At least Danks is a better fielder and baserunner. And he's not much worse offensively. I realize this won't happen, but De Aza just looks bad this year. His baserunning is terrible (again), and his defense has been lackluster. And besides his hot start, he has been bad at the plate, too.

Jose Abreu general discussion
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 8, 2014 -> 11:50 AM) I wish, but Abreu swings at a lot more bad pitches than Frank. We will see moving forward what happens, but if he ever achieves anywhere near Frank's discipline at the plate, his numbers are going to be insane. I think we'll see as pitchers adjust to him, he will adjust and be more patient. If he does that, he'll walk more, too. But yes, his numbers could be ridiculous. Even if his adjustment period is slow, he could still hit 40+ HRs this year with a lower than ideal BA.

Jose Abreu general discussion
Abreu's at-bats were pretty impressive last night. His last hit (the single) showed great adjustment to an inside pitch. Hawk kept talking about it and saying how much it reminds him of Frank Thomas.

White Sox Winner!!!
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 8, 2014 -> 10:38 AM) No. By my metric, you don't measure a guy's "stuff", especially a non -power pitcher, simply by the radar gun. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 8, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) Yet 8 strikeouts and 1 walk. For a guy with nothing, unwilling to throw his change up and a lack of movement, it is astonishing he was able to do that. Post-injury Danks reminds me a lot of Buehrle. I'm not saying he's as good, but he's more of a finesse pitcher now. Personally, I agree that he is effective. I think that we'll see him improve as the season goes on.

On scheduling killing the Cubs/Sox series
My view may not be a popular one, but I really don't care about the series. I don't care who the Sox are playing, I want them to win. I just think that this series (especially now with both teams being not so good) is just another series of games. This cross-town rivalry usually brings out the worst in people, at the games, on social media, etc. The Sox beating the Cubs is great, but the Sox beating the Tigers, Indians, Twins, or Royals is better.

Payroll Obligations 2015-2019
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 2, 2014 -> 03:15 PM) The thing you don't get is the alternative to not filling holes via free agency is just as risky as these killer contracts. Not filling gaping holes is foolish, but not necessarily risky. It's riskier to sign a free agent to a huge contract which in turn limits your ability to fill other holes or to get into a situation where you're handcuffed for years to come. Teams like the Sox have to be smart when it comes to free agents. I think we've already established that the Sox cannot act like the Yankees and sign whoever for whatever.

Payroll Obligations 2015-2019
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 06:52 PM) 2015 $46M 2016 $41M 2017 $30M 2018 $22M 2019 $14M A Scherzer, Shields, or Lester makes a lot of sense if the offense proves to be the best in the division. This is dumb, because those numbers will change. The only number that is even remotely accurate is the 2015 figure. There will be signings and trades and extensions that will change the 2016 through 2019 figures as soon as the trade deadline this year. I know what you're getting at, but we all already know that there are a lot of obligations coming off the books after this year.

Is Adam Dunn necessarily a goner after this year?
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 11:19 PM) What about Billy Butler for DH. If he continues this lousy year, sign him 3 years 8 million a year. Have Butler DH and Abreu remain at first. He has a 12.5 million club option for next year which the Royals are too cheap to match. I've always liked Butler (hated to see him hit against the Sox, but liked his approach). But, I would think the Sox will be looking for a left-handed power bat. I would imagine they'd look for an outfielder and have Viciedo DH or try to find a DH.
-
Will Sox be buyers, not sellers, at the trade deadline?
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 11:12 PM) Maybe the Sox beat writers could quote some anonymous scout sources and find out if Dunn has any value as far as a possible trade. My guess is a big fat NO. What team would trade for Adam Dunn unless the Sox pay for the rest of the deal? It makes no sense after his body of work on the south side. The GM would have to be nuts IMO. If Dunn continues to hit well and has an average around .250 near the deadline, there will be teams asking about him. If there is a team in need of a left-handed power bat for the rest of the season for about $6 million, he'll be traded. Don't worry about his previous body of work. What teams will be looking at is his body of work in 2014. Besides, in 2012 and 2013 he hit 75 HRs and knocked in 182 runs.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 08:57 AM) This is going to be so good. They should just put this out now. I don't know if I've ever been this pumped to see a movie. I was fired up over Pacific Rim, and that movie blew me away in IMax 3D. I feel Godzilla will be even better.

WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 09:41 AM) You should have thrown things at the guy in the blackhawks jersey that couldnt shut up during the entire game My son and I were watching the game, and he asked who was making all that noise. I told him to look at the fat ass in the Blackhawks jersey right behind homeplate. Guy was a pain in the ass.

Maddon praises hell out of Abreu/"new" Sox line-up
QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 07:45 AM) This is such a pleasure to watch. He's such a great professional hitter. We needed this in our lineup. He's been a big spark along with eaton. Having Eaton on this team is so refreshing. He's that little pain in the ass speedster that you hate to face but love having on your team. He's a smart ballplayer, too. Hawk and Steve keep mentioning how he hits the front of the bag all of the time when he's running out those infield singles. Plus, his defense has been pretty damn good.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 25, 2014 -> 05:47 AM) The Amazing Spider-Man was just really flat and non-cohesive...something was just a bit off, it's hard to put it into words on first viewing, but it's going to be considered a disappointment and pale imitation of the Tobey Maguire/Franco/Dunst version. Are you talking about Spiderman 2 vs. The Amazing Spiderman 2? I thought Sam Raimi's Spiderman 2 was the best of the three by far. I particularly liked the nod to the Evil Dead with the Doc Ock scene in the hospital.

AL Rookie of the Month/Year watch
QUOTE (oldsox @ Apr 25, 2014 -> 07:43 AM) Why not? They are both rookies. What is Japan baseball equivelent to, AA? Cuban baseball -- A ball? Is it their age that bothers you? If so, what would be your age cap? It's a tough one. They are both rookies to MLB, and I would agree that both Cuban and Japanese baseball are not the same as the majors. I think what both are doing is pretty damn good. Being biased of course, I think Abreu's success is more telling. He has to adjust to different pitchers everyday, where Tanaka has to go out there and do his thing, which he does every time he pitches. But, I also see the age and experience argument. Overall, though, I'd say they should be eligible.

Bullpen Leverage and Maikel Cleto
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) I should stop now and wait for some board support. My take is the division sucks; Abreu and the lineup has been fantastic meaning this could be a .500 team. On paper with Sale, Q and Danks and an emerging Erik it's a fair to good rotation, especially for our division. But ... with a GIVE UP bullpen, the worst bullpen imaginable, .500 isn't possible. All it would take is hanging around .500 to .550 all year and we'd be in it. That brings us to REED. He would make a world of difference in the bullpen options though arguably the bullpen still "might" suck. My position is not outlandish. So he would make a world of difference, but the bullpen would still suck. Okay. With Reed, we wouldn't have a potential future 3rd baseman signed for six years. One guy in the bullpen doesn't make a difference. This is as bad as your arguments last year that having AJ would have saved the season.

Bullpen Leverage and Maikel Cleto
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 24, 2014 -> 03:52 PM) It shouldn't be. Not in this pathetic division. It was winnable with Reed IMO.
