2014 TV thread
QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jun 26, 2014 -> 12:21 AM) Are there any real shows on right now, or just all this reality crap? I think Ray Donovan might be starting soon? Not sure how I feel about The Leftovers on HBO. Debuts Sunday. Yeah, maybe we should have a separate thread for the reality crap. As far as real shows, Falling Skies started this week, and Under The Dome starts next week. New shows I'm going to check out are The Leftovers and The Last Ship. I have Halt and Catch Fire on the DVR but haven't started it yet. And I'm looking forward to The Strain, which starts in mid-July.

Surkamp called up, Scott Downs DFA'd
He may have been a good guy, and I personally liked the signing, but he's been pretty brutal. His last two appearances were to face one batter, and he failed both times. Last night's failure was very costly. Now the question is, who's coming up?

Worst nickname in Soxtalk history?
I laughed out loud when I read Blowasavio last night. I like that one. There have been some bad ones, but I'm drawing a blank. I agree, though, that we've got to come up with a better one for Abreu.

Who do you most want to keep after the Core 4?
I'd like to see the Sox hold onto Gillaspie. Now, if Davidson proves he can hit and makes it to the team next year, what happens to Conor? He's proven to be pretty good this year both offensively and defensively. And aside from never smiling and always looking like he's ready to go on a killing spree, I think he's a great fit. I'll put in my two cents on Noesi. I'm not blown away by the guy at all, but he's been okay. He's been a good inning filler, and maybe that's okay for the fifth starter this year. Moving forward, though, does he have a place on this team? I like Alexei a lot, and I'd like to see the Sox hold onto him. But, if some team offers an insane deal that fills some future holes, Hahn will have to make a deal. Finally, I'd keep Semien over Beckham. I think Semien has a better chance to be consistently good. But, that's just an opinion based on Beckham's history.

Sox give money to Toronto, get humans in return
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jun 12, 2014 -> 03:14 PM) "Gork hees? I don't even know hees." TBH I didn't think lork was a word, I even checked on miriam-webster. But according to urban dictionary: lork To be assisted by a female in the act of self-pleasure. After the act, the couple goes to a McDonald's where the female orders McFluries(see McFluries). Frequently, the two have never spoken. Traditionally, it occurs during the Lenten season. A regional custom of Shrinetown, Louisiana. Man 1: So, me and this girl were totally lorking last night! Man 2: So you missed Law and Order! Man 1: SVU!?!? Man 2: Man, I wish I could lork with Mariska Hargitay. Man 1: AHHHHHHHHH!I would lork with her all night long, until the McFluries got soft, if you know what I'm sayin'! by Mark Elizabeth Lorker March 06, 2009 ^So it is a word, however I do believe that the above individual who submitted this definition is a dorkys.

2014 TV thread
The Silicon Valley finale was great. The group trying to figure out how Erlich could jerk off 800 guys in 10 minutes might have been one of the funniest things I've seen.

Coffee thread
I drink two cups of coffee just about every day. I probably use too much sugar. As far as soda, I switched to diet years ago, and I was fine with that. Recently, though, I pretty much stopped drinking any soda. I usually drink just water (aside from beer!). There are a ton of water flavor enhancers out there that a very good. And I agree with the post about MyFitnessPal. Great app.

OFF DAY TALK: 1/3 of the season mark grades
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 29, 2014 -> 09:51 PM) It's too early to grade players so I'll grade the coaches. ... Ventura: A- As much as many of us do not like him, nationally this will be the grade. A- if not a straight A. To have a team with this many key players missing time, a game over .500 is a miraculous turnaround from last year. New hitting coach: A. So many guys are better this year. Lot of clutch hits. Lot of smart plays like last night when Semien hit the fly ball to move up the runner. Lots of stuff like that and even hits to the opposite field. Coop: B. Some of the worst bullpen pitchers in history and he's been able to make them adequate much of the time. And he's gotten some very lousy pitchers (on paper) to have a lot of quality starts. Team MVP: Abreu. Inspirational MVP: Gillaspie. Didn't think he was a big leaguer and he is hitting like an all-star type candidate. Might be too early to grade the coaches, too. However, I'd agree with you. Ventura gets a bad rap, and he does make some odd decisions. But to have this team at .500 with the injuries and the ever-rotating door (especially with pitchers) is proof that he's doing some stuff right. One of the biggest changes I see is the attitude of the team. This team is tight-knit and relaxed.

And that's a White Sox Winner!!!
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 28, 2014 -> 10:20 AM) If Gillaspie proves merely capable against LHP, he can easily be a full time starter moving forward. I liked Gillaspie last year when he wasn't nearly as good. This season he's been great. I wonder if knowing Davidson is down in AAA as the potential future starter has anything to do with his performance? He's definitely made a big improvement at the plate, and his defense is quite good, too. I remember reading something last year about how he's very hard on himself. Maybe he's just worked his ass off to be better.

2014 Films Thread
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ May 27, 2014 -> 08:21 AM) I couldnt agree more. I really really liked it. I knew going in that . I like the twist that . I liked the nice balance between story and destruction, and it wasnt destruction just to have destruction. I liked the balance, too. And I thought the quick snippets of fights before switching to another scene really built on the suspense of the big final battle. My son and I (along with others in the theater) cheered when Godzilla

Attendance
QUOTE (greg775 @ May 27, 2014 -> 01:14 AM) Team is gonna have to win, win, win for the Sox to draw. You know that, Caufield. .500 is nice but not enough to bring most people out more than once or twice all year (unless they find free tix). I KNOW there are bargains. Nobody wants to sit in the upper tank (even though some of you say they are good seats). People want good seats and they don't want to spend money on a baseball game more than a time or two all year. It's like an outing to Great America. Same deal. That's my line and I'm sticking with it. I for one don't mind the upper deck, especially for the price. But, I'll agree with the fact that a lot of people just aren't going to want to spend money to go to too many Sox games. My family and I will probably make one this year, which is what we usually do every year. One a side note, Greg, you'll appreciate this. Going to see minor league baseball is cheap. I've been to two Joliet Slammers games this year, and front row along the third base line cost me $10. This past Friday, the team was playing the Normal Cornbelters. Ozzie Guillen's son plays on that team, and Ozzie was there watching. Took my kids over to meet him. He was very nice and took a picture with the kids.

2014 Films Thread
Saw Godzilla in IMAX 3D this weekend. I really enjoyed it. I personally liked the way they slowly built to Godzilla's arrival and the build-up to the big battle at the end. There were some great scenes with the MUTO, too. The scene on the railroad bridge was awesome.

White Sox winner!
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 23, 2014 -> 02:13 AM) Sale was just nasty tonight. What's the stat for helmets flying off heads during swing and misses? He was making good hitters look like kids. That was great. He was firing 95 mph fastballs, and then started one hitter off with an 84 mph change. The guy swung so hard he lost his helmet and nearly came out of his shoes. His slider was devastating, too.

Game Thread 5/12: SOX @ OAK
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ May 12, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) We only have 1 cfer so ADA has to play. Doubt Garcia would unless it's an emergency. Are the Sox at the point where an example should be made of someone like De Aza? DFA his ass and bring up Danks again. At least Danks is a better fielder and baserunner. And he's not much worse offensively. I realize this won't happen, but De Aza just looks bad this year. His baserunning is terrible (again), and his defense has been lackluster. And besides his hot start, he has been bad at the plate, too.

Jose Abreu general discussion
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 8, 2014 -> 11:50 AM) I wish, but Abreu swings at a lot more bad pitches than Frank. We will see moving forward what happens, but if he ever achieves anywhere near Frank's discipline at the plate, his numbers are going to be insane. I think we'll see as pitchers adjust to him, he will adjust and be more patient. If he does that, he'll walk more, too. But yes, his numbers could be ridiculous. Even if his adjustment period is slow, he could still hit 40+ HRs this year with a lower than ideal BA.

Jose Abreu general discussion
Abreu's at-bats were pretty impressive last night. His last hit (the single) showed great adjustment to an inside pitch. Hawk kept talking about it and saying how much it reminds him of Frank Thomas.

White Sox Winner!!!
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 8, 2014 -> 10:38 AM) No. By my metric, you don't measure a guy's "stuff", especially a non -power pitcher, simply by the radar gun. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 8, 2014 -> 10:39 AM) Yet 8 strikeouts and 1 walk. For a guy with nothing, unwilling to throw his change up and a lack of movement, it is astonishing he was able to do that. Post-injury Danks reminds me a lot of Buehrle. I'm not saying he's as good, but he's more of a finesse pitcher now. Personally, I agree that he is effective. I think that we'll see him improve as the season goes on.

On scheduling killing the Cubs/Sox series
My view may not be a popular one, but I really don't care about the series. I don't care who the Sox are playing, I want them to win. I just think that this series (especially now with both teams being not so good) is just another series of games. This cross-town rivalry usually brings out the worst in people, at the games, on social media, etc. The Sox beating the Cubs is great, but the Sox beating the Tigers, Indians, Twins, or Royals is better.

Payroll Obligations 2015-2019
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 2, 2014 -> 03:15 PM) The thing you don't get is the alternative to not filling holes via free agency is just as risky as these killer contracts. Not filling gaping holes is foolish, but not necessarily risky. It's riskier to sign a free agent to a huge contract which in turn limits your ability to fill other holes or to get into a situation where you're handcuffed for years to come. Teams like the Sox have to be smart when it comes to free agents. I think we've already established that the Sox cannot act like the Yankees and sign whoever for whatever.

Payroll Obligations 2015-2019
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 06:52 PM) 2015 $46M 2016 $41M 2017 $30M 2018 $22M 2019 $14M A Scherzer, Shields, or Lester makes a lot of sense if the offense proves to be the best in the division. This is dumb, because those numbers will change. The only number that is even remotely accurate is the 2015 figure. There will be signings and trades and extensions that will change the 2016 through 2019 figures as soon as the trade deadline this year. I know what you're getting at, but we all already know that there are a lot of obligations coming off the books after this year.
