  1. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 04:53 PM) I did, and it doesn't. The word November is underlined. If you right click it and accept the changes the program wants, it places a comma after November. I don't know why it won't post in here. Here's the link to the word image: http://www.whitesoxcenter.com/word.gif
  2. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 04:51 PM) I get the point.. What part of agree to disagree do YOU not understand...? The part when I told you the fault in my thought process and you continued at it. That's all.
  3. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 04:50 PM) The structure is right both ways. It's an individual choice to use it or not. Actually, according to the rules of writing, a comma is absolutely needed. Put the sentence in Microsoft Word. It asks you to put a comma there.
  4. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 04:47 PM) I had no problem without the comma.. Agree to disagree.. :headshake Also, you can't imply how smart or stupid your reader is. Obviously most people will understand the sentence, but you're missing the point.
  5. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 04:47 PM) I had no problem without the comma.. Agree to disagree.. :headshake Another thing I should mention is that I write creatively. The 'rules' might be different. But the way I know it is, you want every word to get across to the reader with every meaning intended possible. It may be different with journalism.
  6. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 04:42 PM) It sounds natural to you...? Maybe if there was something else there... In November, (ie) after much consideration, Williams exercised a 3.5 million dollar buy out option on long time slugger Frank Thomas. The format is correct with or without the comma.. but the comma, if used by definition, isn't needed there. Well, one way to judge whether or not it is or isn't a natural place to pause is to read it. If you read correctly, it is natural to pause. If you blow through that sentence it's too much information for a listener to comprehend. The other thing to ask is: does the audience need to know the move took place in November? If yes, then a comma is needed. If not, "In November" doesn't even belong there.
  7. QUOTE(palehose23 @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 04:38 PM) Damn the kid is in college- keep it constructive. As a student of writing, I've been called an idiot by a professor. I agree that it should be constructive...but one day he'll be hearing a lot worse from fans or readers. He could've written the second coming of Hamlet. It wouldn't matter.
  8. QUOTE(Steff @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 04:33 PM) Comma after November....??? Is this directed towards me? If so, explain to me why you wouldn't use a comma after November? It's a natural place to pause.
  9. QUOTE(Beastly @ Jan 3, 2006 -> 09:31 PM) In November Williams went out and exercised a 3.5 million dollar player option buy out on Frank Thomas, who had been with the White Sox for the past 15 years, batting a career .307 and hitting 448 home runs in his career with the Sox. Some advide would be, from Stephen King himself, that the important words go at the beginning of the sentence, and shorter is better. A way to revise this sentence might be: In November, Williams exercised a 3.5 million dollar buy out option on long time slugger Frank Thomas. Thomas' 448 home runs is a top the Sox record books, and he hit .307 in 15 years with the team.
  10. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 04:03 PM) Just go away and stop tarnishing your legacy. This year sucked and his performance in the playoffs the last couple years was pretty embarrassing. Who cares about a legacy when you love the game? Haven't you ever played on a terrible, awful, s*** team and still love it?
  11. QUOTE(fathom @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 05:32 PM) If Uribe's the man, then Tejada is a god. Tejada, as good as he is, is not as cool to watch play as Uribe.
  12. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 07:35 PM) The White Sox are 77 games back?
  13. QUOTE(GasHeGone @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 02:15 AM) Dylan, I PMed you about possibly writing for you. I'd never PMed someone before, so let me know if you got it. I got it, and replied.
  14. Mods, move this if necessary. I talked to Jason about linking WSC to SoxTalk again and all is well. But since WhiteSoxCentral.com was stolen by somebody in Texas or something, the new domain name is www.whitesoxcenter.com (progress can be viewed now). I'm looking for anyone that can do good solid PHP work that is strictly on a volunteer basis (coder will get full regcognition on site.) I suppose I'm also looking for writers, but only those that are either educated in the field, or good at it nonetheless. P.S. I'm unemployed at the moment, so I'm serious this time about bringing the site back together.

    PC help please ...

QUOTE(DonkeyKongerko @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 03:40 AM) Start->Run Type 'services.msc' and hit enter. There you should see a service called 'Print Spooler' and you can set it to automatically start up all the time. Bingo.
  16. QUOTE(THEWOOD @ Dec 29, 2005 -> 07:53 PM) I want to stop smoking...and I really am not even a smoker. I will have 2-3 cigarettes when I go out with my friends to a bar. I hate it, I hate the way I smell the next morning. You got it easy. My resolution is to quit smoking and I'm at a pack a day.
  17. QUOTE(iWiN4PreP @ Dec 29, 2005 -> 06:30 PM) Id love rowand as a 4th outfielder. While it sounds wonderful, if Rowand comes back to this team anytime soon, it won't be as a fourth outfielder.
  18. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 26, 2005 -> 07:34 PM) Right now, we still have too damn many outfielders. I count 6 under our control for 06-07, all but 1 of whom appear ML ready. (Borch, BA, Owens, Sweeney, Dye, Pods). We may lose 1 if he doesn't make the team this year, but that still leaves us with 5 guys competing for at most 4 spots. Maybe 2 years from now I could imagine us actually making a run at ARow. But right now...well, we have a logjam in the outfield. Good point, but from Kenny Williams trends, I think he'd be more partial to reacquiring an Aaron Rowand--gritty, productive, team leader--type player than stick through the pains of growing a prospect like Owens, Sweeney or Anderson. I tend to think that if Brian Anderson struggles, Williams just might pull the trigger and drop off a few of those prospects to Philadelphia if there is a chance at getting Rowand back.
  19. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 01:25 AM) Funny, I thought the Cubs and Pirates were the only teams willing to deal within the same division. Ramirez and Clement may have been intriuging, if not for Clement's abysmal season. What, can the Orioles believe a change of scenery will cure his troubles? He'll be facing the same exact teams, aside from interleague. It certaintly is a trade which favors Baltimore, but counting on Clement to rebound is foolish. Worst, when the following offseason arrives, they're left with less money to sign quality starting pitchers. Amassing nearly 20 million to the payroll certaintly would prohibit it. Ultimately, the goal of trading Tejada should be acquiring pitching, not hitting. And definitely not within your own divison. Probably the most intelligent thing I've heard in reply to a trade rumor on this board.
  20. QUOTE(spiderman @ Dec 29, 2005 -> 11:06 PM) I don't know why Baltimore would do this. Because it's Baltimore. When was the last good move they made?
  21. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Dec 29, 2005 -> 06:25 PM) He insulted our fanbase on ESPN News. Labeled us "the worse in baseball," among other comments which insinuated our rowdiness and criminal behavior. f*** him. If I ever saw him skateboarding down the street I'd kick his board. He runs like a pansy, so I doubt he would catch me. By making those comments, aren't you proving Byrnes right? ...Just an observation.
  22. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Nov 1, 2005 -> 02:58 PM) That's why I said "harder" division. The AL East will forever be the "hardest" division in baseball, no matter what the facts say. Agreed, and when I get home, this guy will get a response from another "fellow writer."
  23. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Nov 1, 2005 -> 02:48 PM) His respone to ^ would be that the Yankees and Red Sox played in a "harder" division. You don't even have to ask him to know his response. Well again, the playoffs corrects which divisions really are tougher. That's the point of the playoffs. To see who is the best of the best. The White Sox had Cleveland riding on their ass, a team that just as well could've beat some teams in the playoffs. After NY and Boston, what does the AL East have to offer? 3 sub .500 teams? Real tough.
  24. The author of that article wrote like a typical writer does. He believes something, can't posssibly prove it, so he twists his words and facts around to make an illusion that he's correct. His biggest fault was that he mentioned a 162 game season would correct luck, implying the Red Sox and Yankees were the best in the AL. If you want to go by his wisdom, the correct team won in the AL as the White Sox had 99 wins, better then both Boston and NY and the entire league. But according to his formula, St. Louis should've had it in the bag. 162 games corrects it to a certain point. The playoffs shows who can beat top notch teams instead of KC, TB and Pitt.
  25. QUOTE(bighurt2719 @ Oct 31, 2005 -> 05:50 PM) why are you hating on crede so much? do you have a problem with a player who we would not have won the world series without? and by slamming on crede in this topic, are you inferring that the castilla trade should have gone down?! different strokes different folks, i guess... I never supported trading Crede for Vinny Castilla. For Randa? Sure I did. But I think it's an overstatement to say we wouldn't have won the World Series without him. A giant overstatement. That's a huge HUGE smack in the face to Konerko, Buehrle, Contreras, Garcia, Jenks, Podsedinik and the rest of the team. Crede is only one player, and not even a superstar at that. If you're going to tell me this team, a team of unsung hero's couldn't have won with say...Pablo Ozuna at thirdbase, you've severely overrated Joe Crede. Crede had a wonderful post-season and I'll give him his props for it, but I think people need to be realistic about how good of a player he is.
