No it becomes a problem when you have people parroting nonsense and saying "sold, very compelling work."
It was crappy bulls*** work. If they want to be helpful, send the pictures to the authorities. Maybe even write your conclusions and say "These guys look suspicious for X, Y, Z reason."
But the purpose wasnt to help. The purpose was to drive traffic to their website so that they could make money. Yet people dont get that.
I agree with that, but at that point it is on the media. The stories are not initially created to drive traffic. They are created by anonymous users at places like 4chan and Reddit. These users presumably have no financial interests in the sites they post on. But then the story's get lifted from there for the reasons stated and the labeling begins.
