QUOTE(ISF @ May 31, 2005 -> 02:46 PM) Best things I saw: 1. Timo earning his 1 mil. 2. Buerhle being the ace 3. Rowand heating up 2/3 quality at-bats out of Frank was promising, too, as long as his wheels get fixed soon.

QUOTE(JimH @ May 31, 2005 -> 02:33 PM) I will go a step further, Crede and Uribe are here primarily because they play very good defense. Makes sense when you build the team around pitching. Since Konerko and Everett are proven hitters, the offensive expectations are greater for them than Crede and Uribe, and they should be. Crede hits down low in the order and for the most part Uribe does too. They don't expect the same level of offense from Crede/Uribe as Konerko and Everett. They are going to give this more time, and make a move accordingly. But I don't think it'll happen for several weeks. And when it does, I see 2nd tier prospects being traded. The most likely upgrade I foresee is a SS/3B utility type like Polanco. I think he's the best bet. I'd also be happy if we got Mackowiak from the Pirates. I think he could add a lot to this team. I'm not sure if he can do SS/3B, but if he can play 2B, I'm sure he can play 3B at least.

Ozzie's most dubious managerial call yesterday?
Wedge replied to Hideaway Lights's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 31, 2005 -> 02:23 PM) Hermy. Everett for Iguchi was a smart move. Everett usually gets the ball deep enough to score in a run. I wasn't concerned with that move at all. Maybe so, but I thought the percentage of Iguchi hitting a ball for a score was greater than Everett doing so (safely or a sac fly). Both have had similar amounts of big hits over the season thus far (i.e. close and late), but Iguchi's numbers are overall better. I did really like the PH of Willie for Juan. Willie has shown that he knows how to take walks. Plus, I think the threat of him stealing is what got Crede on base, despite the quick 0-2 count. -
I was at the game with my dad yesterday and it was a pretty amazing atmosphere. The place went absolutely nuts when Timo got that hit. Everybody around me just jumped up and started screaming and pumping their fists when it happened. I hope we go to the World Series and that I can take my dad to a game like that. That'd be a really special moment for me and him.

If we're trading for a 3B sub/utility player, get Polanco. Look at some of the info Juggs has put out there on him. This guy would be really great for us, especially since he can play some SS if we need him to.

QUOTE(sayitanitso @ May 30, 2005 -> 10:17 AM) Mackowiak would be a nice addition to this team not only because he can hit RHP, but he is a left-handed bat. And he could play third base for Cruddy. He's also a total Cub killer.

Well, at least we don't have to hear the theme from "The Natural" again for a while.

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ May 26, 2005 -> 09:33 AM) Wow before the season the same could have been said about AJ..Great insight to nothing. Not really, if you investigated AJ (as KW thankfully did with Hermanson). They loved AJ in Minny. What happened in SF was between AJ and one pitcher, that's where all the bad stories came from. People used to say Everett was a bad influence... he looks like a good one here. Guillen has a consistent history of being a bad influence wherever he goes.

QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ May 26, 2005 -> 09:32 AM) And How was Hernadez's start this past Sunday? It was pretty awesome. What happens to your argument if Clement or Lowe go on the DL?
-
QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ May 26, 2005 -> 09:12 AM) I would have taken neither...Wright had one good year in Atlanta, and Herandez, is to injury prone..I still say we should have went after either Clement or Lowe.. Groundball pitchers something needed at the Cell. You know, there can be multiple correct and wrong answers in life. For example. getting Clement or Lowe or Hernadez could all turn out to be pretty good moves. I'm not sure what language you speak to prove you're right or wrong, but I'll try this simple comparison: Name Salary Record ERA BB K IP IP/G Derek Lowe $7,000,000 4-4 3.02 14 47 65.2 6.52 Matt Clement $6,500,000 5-0 3.34 22 47 64.2 6.42 El Duque $3,500,000 5-1 3.91 24 30 46.0 5.75 Hernandez is tied for wins with Clement and is a bit worse in each category that the other two. I believe Lowe also plays in a pitcher's park. However, he's making only about half as much. You can basically say that because we signed Hernandez rather than Lowe or Clement, we were able to have the cash to either get AJ or Iguchi. Thus, ask yourself Hernandez + AJ/Iguchi or Clement or Lowe.

No, who's on first. Kill me.

Black Jack is my favorite former Sox player. Now here's a guy that could really wear the eye patch

But Buerhle isn't an ace

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ May 25, 2005 -> 02:59 PM) On the subject of BMac I thought about this again & I don't see how the WSox can avoid burning a year of service on him. He's good for at least 3 more starts with El Duque on the DL but this is just El Duque's first stint on the DL. The odds are there will be at least one maybe two more. We knew going in to that deal that we'd be lucky to see 20 starts out of him. As long as he's healthy going into Oct it be worth it. So burning a yr of service for BMac is not an issue. It's a question of whether to keep him on the team for relief duties or send him to Charlotte for starts. Options don't play a role either because the WSox add him to the 25 man roster on each call-up. So there's really no addition cost in shuffling him between Charlotte & Chicago for starts. I think that's the better way to go. Charlotte needs him as much as we do. The more AAA starts he gets the better he'll do up here. Yeah, I agree with this. It seems like we'll probably see McCarthy make between 6-10 starts in MLB this season, so shuffling him would make the most sense.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 25, 2005 -> 01:07 PM) I'd like to see his fastball get faster unless he starts pulling the strings like Shingo. Well let's hope the Sox organization makes the right decision and puts him back in AAA. Here's two examples of relievers used as spot starters and starting the next year or started that same year that I could think of. Buehrle - Did good Juan Cruz - failed so far Danny Haren - failed so far Jon Adkins - failed so far Wilson Alvarez(though he's already older) - decent, but he's already older; just threw him in there so people don't think I'm trying to be biased Danny Graves - failed I can't think of anymore right now, but so far most of them failed. Johan Santana? Here's some info: season G GS ERA 2000 30 5 6.49 2001 15 4 4.74 2002 27 14 2.99 2003 45 18 3.07

No way, the Satan commercial is hilarious.

Out of curiousity: suppose we send McCarthy back to AAA after Duque gets back, what happens in September and October? I forgot these rules, but don't the rosters extend to 40-men? How does this affect arbitration eligibility? Thanks in advance.

Best yet to come for White Sox ace Garland
Wedge replied to greasywheels121's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 25, 2005 -> 10:33 AM) Garland is AN Ace this year. So is El Duque and Buehrle for us. Contreras and Garcia have been #2 pitchers. Yes guys, it's possible to have more than 1 ace on your staff. Garland at least is turning into one. Many considered the A's to have three aces: Hudson, Mulder, and Zito. If you're going to be giving Zito the ace tag, then I think Buehrle at the very least deserves it as well. -
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ May 25, 2005 -> 09:31 AM) I hope Politte can keep it up but I doubt he will. To beat MIN we need to add a top 20 RP before Aug. As teams fall out of the contention there will be plenty of candidates to choose from. Wagner amongst them(15th in NL). If El Duque makes it back, is moving Contreras to the pen a viable option? Would you project him as a top 20 RP if he makes the shift?

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 25, 2005 -> 10:30 AM) Money. It will get done it's just the Bulls are trying to squeeze out the best deal possible because at one point last year they were paying for three coaching contracts(Floyd, Cartwright, Skiles). They just want to make sure that he didn't have a fluke season and protect themselves. Skiles actually doesn't want as much money as I thought he would. He's asking for around the average. Thanks for the insight. Do you see this being a similar hang-up with Ozzie, if the team decides to extend him?
-
No, this is a very good article. It raises a bunch of concerns to me, and it uses the Skiles situation as a good back-drop for the Ozzie situation. Does anybody know why the Skiles situation hasn't been settled yet?
-
He'll be up here for two more starts at the least. Who knows, maybe somebody gets injured and it forces the issue.
