QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:39 PM) That's the thing. I am thrilled with how this team has played this year. I just don't think they will be Detroit. You know what sucks? So few home games in July when the Sox are in contention. That would have been a great way to ensure good crowds.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 11:37 PM) Defense is the one clear win for us. The Tigers defense is awful, but just got better today with Infante. They can lose a guy like that on the offensive end because of all of the firepower that they have. I said this over the weekend, but the Tigers 3/4 hitters are playing awesome baseball right now. If Sox 3/4 continue to slump, then they probably have little chance to stay with the Tigers.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 11:32 PM) And to be frank, they won 95 games cause they got hot late in the year. Most of the year they were a .500 team and in many ways they overachieved. They are beatable. They aren't the Rangers or Angels. If Fister performs in the 2nd half like he did last year, then sure, they can get to 95 games with a healthy squad. However, I believe he has 2 DL trips already this year. They do finish off the year with 13 games against teams that will likely be pitching AAA scrubs though so 95 wins is possible with a hot August. Thing is, if they do win 95 games this year, you tip your cap and go for the wild card.

Which probably means Viciedo would have been traded for a pitcher

There will be significant growing pains with Teague. He was terrible to start the year for Kentucky, but by the end of the year, he had shown significant improvement. It will be interesting to see how patient Thibs is with him.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:08 PM) Interesting. Brett Gardner is probably not coming back this year, but don't they realize Ichiro hasn't been any good for two years now? As a #9 hitter though, that's pretty good for them. Helps their defense as well.

Wow, that's quite the blockbuster. Surprised those teams are trading so soon after the Pineda debacle.
-
Marlins also get Rob Brantly, who's a highly regarded catching prospect (and one other player was included as well).
-
If they were willing to give up Turner (and with the prospects they have in their system), I'm surprised they didn't aim higher and try to get Josh Johnson.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 09:59 PM) This. It sickens me how people place the Tigers on a pedestal. They still don't scare me. The thing that sucks about the Sox/Tigers debate this year is that we've let their worst pitcher destroy us in 3 games this season. Hell, without those 3 starts, maybe they looked to replace Porcello and not Smyly's spot in the rotation.

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 10:53 PM) According to Bruce Levine the Sox are looking for a starting pitcher Better be someone they control for next year also

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 09:46 PM) Let's get a pitcher, and maybe upgrade at 2B, and go for the wild card. Because that's all we got. Some might say (including me) that this should have been the goal even before this trade. Hopefully Sanchez tanks and Turner becomes a stud.

Really nice trade for the Marlins getting Turner in all of this. Does stink that the Tigers were able to add some good pieces without having to give up Castellanos though.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 09:15 PM) A lot longer than a single road trip! This "nothing seems to be changing" thing is just silly in this time frame. Changing the lineup (other than giving a day off to players here and there) isn't something you do based on one road/home stand. You do that, and you reduce your chances of getting back to the rhythm they HAD before the ASB, which was good. A lot of these issues were pertinent before the ASB (ie: Dunn and Konerko struggling to do much of anything). The offense started to struggle around mid June, but thankfully got to face some of the worst starters in baseball to pad their stats (Wolf, Blackburn, Randy Wells, Adam Warren).
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 08:06 PM) 2. This regular lineup was clicking along nicely until this road trip. Changing it now is silly and will make things worse, not better. I keep seeing people say this, but nothing seems to be changing with the offense. How long do you wait to make changes then?
-
Prove us wrong Dunn. Ventura sure does like this particular lineup.
-
QUOTE (Caesar @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 08:13 PM) Qunitana? Delgado is more highly regarded, IMO
-
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 23, 2012 -> 06:23 PM) Rumor has it that Randall Delgado is included in the deal. If so, big win for the Cubs. Dempster isn't a part of your future anyway. Delgado is more highly regarded than anyone Sox could have given up besides Sale. Good get for the Cubs.
-
Marlins losers of 5 in a row. It wouldn't shock me if they made a huge trade to try and shake things up.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 09:59 PM) Monday: Liriano- Floyd Tuesday: Devries- Quintana Wednesday: Blackburn- Peavy Seriously, 2 out of 3, or bust. Friday: Sale- Darvish Saturday: Humber- Harrison Sunday: Floyd- Oswalt Expecting to get swept. Maybe a trade happens before then. Big game tomorrow...Dunn better be on the bench.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 08:57 PM) One wonders though...after signing that huge extension, then trading him away so quickly? Santos would have been MORE valuable to another team without that contract hanging over his head. He still had one cost-controlled year and 3 arbitration ones, where a team could go year-to-year. It's not like he was Matt Moore or David Price. It didn't (and still doesn't) make any sense, especially reversing course and re-signing Danks at roughly the same time. Or the Sox for some reason felt they knew something about Molina that seemingly no other teams knew and had to have him?
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 08:53 PM) Or he knew those trades would get rescinded by the commissioner's office. You really think only the Blue Jays would be willing to make a trade without doing a physical or looking at medical reports? If Kenny traded Santos knowing he was hurt and didn't disclose it, then that's pathetic of him.
-
QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 08:51 PM) Unfortunately history is no on your side. The Sox are not Houston. 3 managers in the new century and a majority of the story stays the same. Still way, way too early to lump Ventura in with the second half struggles of Ozzie and Manuel.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 08:49 PM) The biggest deal, Molina for Santos, actually saved the White Sox $7.25 million in guaranteed salary...so you can bet that JR's not going to fire Williams for saving him from that catastrophe. Even the Danks and Peavy contracts were covered by insurance, so they're only losing 55-65 cents on the dollar. No one knows how the insurance works. KW is very lucky that Santos got hurt and was a non-factor this year, as if Santos was contributing to the Blue Jays and Molina performed as terrible as he has, then that trade would be getting a lot of bad press. It's still infuriating that KW seemingly didn't ask other teams what they'd be willing to give up to get Santos.
-
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 22, 2012 -> 08:43 PM) I don't want KW as part of a rebuilding. I completely agree with this.
