Sox have really struggled so far this year vs Porcello
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 08:51 PM) That's the other angle. It would be ironic if they dumped his former teammate in Gavin Floyd ($9.5 million option) for Brett Myer's $10 million, but it's not inconceivable. One wonders if KW talked to him or his agent and told him this was part of the thought process behind the trade....? You're over-analyzing things. It's extremely unlikely he's being brought in to close.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 07:40 PM) It's not clear whether it's finishes/closes or just appears in....from the looks of it, it's 40-50 appearances. That must have been something that KW and Luhnow discussed in terms of future payroll obligations. OR, KW really has grave concerns about Reed and just picked up a $10 million veteran closer for 2013, the antithesis of the youth movement in the pen. That really makes the money tight for AJ, Youkilis, Floyd and another starter for next year. Only 2 of those 4 will fit. Which is why it's very unlikely he'll be made the closer.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 07:38 PM) It's a good addition and I usually couldn't care less about character issues but punching a woman is indefensible. f*** him. Yep

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 07:35 PM) Scott Merkin @scottmerkin RHP Matt Heidenreich and LHP Blair Walters and PTBNL are the players according to @brianmctaggart That PTBNL could be Courtney Hawkins

Doesn't Myers' 10 million dollar option automatically kick in if he finishes 16 more games? For that reason, I doubt he's going to replace Reed.
-
Thoughts on Walters being included in this deal?
-
Character or not, you have to like Crain and Myers being added to our bullpen this weekend.
-
I think he'll do well as a set-up man. His stuff has been impressive, and his numbers got blown up by one really bad game he had.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:36 AM) But he has a big league arm, and scouts are more in love with him than Quintana. That's what Buehrle was up against from the time he was drafted...it's the same thing Jose is facing now. Even the doubts from Ventura about him being able to finish out games. What Quintana has done so far is incredible. Very underrated future in this organization, IMO.

20/7 (or 7/20): White Sox @ Detroit... IT'S ON!!!!

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:37 AM) Right now I'm most concerned with the fact that we seem to have been overworking Peavy and some of our starters lately. This lack of experienced relievers is hurting the club. +1 -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 03:31 AM) We also don't have ANY clarity at all about the catching situation next year. Right now, you'd say bring back AJ for $15-18 million on a two year contract, but that might look completely different 2 months from now. Flowers just really hasn't had a fair chance at all to get any kind of offensive rhythm, but to think he'd be able to hit for a higher average than Dunn or strike out much less than Dunn...it would be a big risk to go with Tyler as the starting catcher in 2013. Phegley started off like gangbusters and then faded, just like Mitchell. With Doumit signing an extension with the Twins, the best available FA option is Chris Ianetta, and that's not saying too much. I'll be shocked if AJP isn't back. I would also be shocked that if he leaves, the Sox go into next season with Flowers as the starting catcher. I predict that K. Suzuki would be the starting catcher next year if AJ is gone.

QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 01:56 AM) I didn't expect a win tonight. Peavy is no Verlander. Peavy's giving up a ton of hits compared to his first 14 starts of the year. Something like giving up 8 or more hits in 4 of his last 5 starts after only doing it twice in his first 14 starts. -

Of course...Tigers have it rolling right now. Gotta win tomorrow. Aren't going to win many games when Youkilis, Dunn and Konerko play as badly as they did tonight. -

Dunn with a terrible week so far. He's not striking out a lot, he just isn't doing anything productive at the plate. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:44 AM) Might as well make Veal our #1 lefty now. At least he has a curveball. For some reason, Thornton refuses to throw offspeed pitches...and yet there was an at-bat in the last 7-10 days where he threw 5-6 of those slurves/sliders, whatever that pitch he flips up there for his breaking ball. Yet we don't ever see it in huge situations, just fastballs center cut. Thornton actually has been very effective with his slider the last few weeks, IMO. He dominated the Blue Jays with it. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:42 AM) Bill Melton is right. The White Sox just don't any relievers who can consistently throw offspeed pitches. Doesn't matter how hard you throw, you will get torched in the big leagues, especially when you get behind in the count. That and the fact that Konerko's hitting about .230 with no power for the last 40-45 games and Adam Dunn is quickly closing in on .200. It would be a mistake to make any big trades to try to save this season IMO. Outside of trading Quintana, Sale or Viciedo, there's really no one I'd be too upset about the Sox trading for a rental. I guess that's the fortunate thing about having a bad farm system. I do agree though that making a blockbuster deal for a rental would probably be a bad idea. -

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 01:38 AM) I can stomach these losses better than the one last night. Still f***ing fuming over that one Would have upset me a lot more if there were two outs when it happened.
