Phil Rogers on Sox quest to find leadoff man
fathom replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 08:00 PM) all I see is CR/AP That could be a great acronym if they're our 4/5 starters and they stink. -

QUOTE (scenario @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 08:24 PM) Putting those numbers in perspective... there are alot of people who feel Asdrubal Cabrera is a 'defensive stud'. And his zone rating is not really any better than Alexei's. Yet people think that Weeks is a disaster at 2nd base, and Ramirez's numbers are very similar. -

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 07:55 PM) Tell me about it! We need to get this guy off the field. It's a wonder how we even won a game with such a horrific defender. Give me a break. I'll sit back and wait for the stat posters to reveal his mediocre zone ratings, etc. He had poor range considering his athletic ability, and struggled with routine plays after the ASB. Prior to the ASB, I thought he was a potential Gold Glove candidate. -

QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 06:43 PM) What am I missing here? Did UConn play an NBA team in Buffalo? How is playing at Buffalo a tough road test? I'm scratching my head over this one. Please enlighten me. Well, Buffalo did beat a very good Ball State team. Oh wait, wrong board. -

QUOTE (chisox2334 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 07:42 PM) alexi best postion is suppost to be at SS. If you do remember Alexi early on in 2008 season started in Cf and that changed right away. Not to mention how well alexi played so well at 2b. He was horrific defensively during the 2nd half of last season. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 06:57 AM) Well, to be honest, Mullens is one of the more highly regarded freshman in the country, so most likey he just played well. Basically OSU just beat ND, with Evan Turner (from chicago) just dominating. Yep, it's about time Mullens showed some flashes of dominance. Also, I can't thank you enough for the clubtrillion blog. -

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 12:12 AM) This means Furcal. I like it. If true, OC has to decline arbitration. If we're not trading for Roberts, then Furcal is the best fit for this team. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 01:06 AM) The Sox are bidding on leadoff hitters as we speak. On free agents? -
QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 12:26 AM) Santo, I appreciate your research. I can't agree that SBs (especially those late in games) are meaningless. You'd have fielders' indifference if they were meaningless. Runners who don't have blazing speed need to pick their spots. More than the stolen bases, OC had the rep as being a great baserunner. However, he had quite a few bonehead moves on the bases that resulted in untimely outs.

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 12:10 AM) I'm not comparing anything. I'm wondering why JD's paying one bit of attention to anything on the basepaths when he's got a two strike count. If it was that distracting to have a runner in motion, then technically the hit and run would never work. I love JD, but I think it's a total BS excuse. It happens all around baseball. Stealing a base with 2 strikes is usually frowned upon, as it will distract the hitter. Iguchi really struggled with this when Pods was around.

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 11:54 PM) Harangody's has pneumonia for the last week. I know...but unless he's had pneumonia for his ND career, his defense has been horrible. There's no denying he's a great offensive player though. Tory Jackson's one of the better pg in college bball, but Brey's done a poor job of recruiting the past two seasons it seems like. -

ND with a pretty weak effort against Ohio St, even though Evan Turner is turning into a superstar. Luke Harangody is one of the best offensive players in the country...and far and away the worst defensive player in the country. He made B.J. Mullens look efficient on the offensive end. -
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 06:00 PM) Exactly! We are getting into this cycle of thinking we will just take fringe players or think we are getting the other teams top prospects who are not ready for the bigs and believing we will be contenders next year or even in 2010. You don't give up your top players for less than major league ready impact players in my opinion. I have said it before and that's that we seem to value our own players way to little Cause it boils down to some people would rather have a highly rated farm system than actual MLB players.

The UGa/Illini game is one of the uglier games you'll ever see. There's a tipped passed on every possession, and it's not due to aggressive defense. Trey Thompkins travels every move he makes for Georgia. -
QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 05:18 PM) I think a lot of people don't realize that KW has already told us that Marquez will be on the starting staff. I know alot of people don't like it but it follows KW's pattern. He traded a veteran not specatacular pitcher (Garland earlier, Vazquez this year). He acqured a pitcher who was once highly regarded but who regressed but who KW saw in the AFL and stated was MLB ready (Floyd then Marquez now). I agree, and the problem with this is Marquez was never close to being the prospect Floyd was.

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 04:14 PM) Great season??? His defense was worse than normal. His baserunning distracted our hitters and only stole 19 meanlingless bases. Put up an OPS+ of 84, and OPS of .705 (Uribe in 2007 was .682.) Led the American League in outs made with 509. Got in arguements with other teammates and pissed off the manager (obviously not the clubhouse leader as falsely advertised,) and he completely ignored the media after they reported him selfishly calling up the press box on multiple occasions to question a fielding error. How many times, error or not, did Cabrera blow it defensively leading up to a huge inning? Ask fathom for some help on that question. Of course Cabrera did this on a $10 million salary and should be expecting a raise. f*** him. Don't forget he was a terrible situational hitter, as he couldn't bunt and was awful putting the ball in play on a hit-and-run. Also, don't let Hawk fool you...he was not someone you wanted up with RISP and 2 outs. His .208 batting average and .542 OPS was disappointing as hell.

Just got done watching every episode of 24/7 for this fight. I was very impressed with how Manny treated his entourage.

For everyone clamoring for OC to return, you fail to realize that this wasn't in the plans that KW had. Thus, who knows what other deals he wanted to make will be impossible due to the financial ramifications if OC returns. I assume that the Swisher and Javy trades weren't made with OC returns in mind.

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 09:52 PM) Jenks and a lower level prospect to the Brewers for Carlos Villanueva and Lorenzo Cain Holy hell that would be a bad trade.

I'm happy that KW offered OC arbitration, but it shows the disconnect between OC and the organization that they seem stunned he would even think about accepting it.

Stark Says Sox Signed Van Benschoten

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 5, 2008 -> 06:25 PM) I'd be shocked if KW doesn't add another SP from here. This team would just be in a better position IMHO, if they let Richard be the swingman, and let Marquez and a FA/trade guy come in for those last 2 spots. If they don't work out, you can either move Richard into the rotation, or give that spot to Contreras when he is healthy. There's no doubt in my mind that Richard will be in the starting rotation. I really wish people would stop with this Marquez talk (such as Don Cooper). He needs to prove he can get AAA hitters out before getting a shot with the big league club. -

Disappointing that he won't try to become a hitter. Next thing you know, people will pencil him into the #5 spot.
