Contreras gave up Bartlett's homer.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:37 PM) Things that need to be addressed in next years ST. Baserunning, and where to throw a ball on different plays. We have too many guys throwing the ball into the wrong base allowing trailers to follow and we turn a single run, into multiple runs by bad fundamentals. This is as bad of a fundamental team as I've ever seen on the Sox, and that takes a lot to accomplish. We let runners circle the bases on us, and our base running is beyond pathetic.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:37 PM) You're assuming that B-Mac wouldn't have those blowups? He has some growing up to do... and everyone seems to forget that. Sometimes, I think Sox fans put McCarthy on the same pedistal that Cubs fans put Prior on. Think about it. I think McCarthy has much better mound composure than Vazquez does. I'm not even one of these fans that think he's the next Mike Mussina, etc.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:33 PM) The kid's going to be awesome, but not this year. As a starter this year, he'd 100% have a losing record. No doubt in my mind. Then what would everyone b**** about? I disagree that he'd have a losing record. If he was in Vazquez's spot, he'd easily have a winning record. We've given Vaz the lead in almost every start, and his blow-ups have taken us from a comfortable lead to trailing very fast. If we really think McCarthy would have an ERA over 5, then KW should be fired for not trading him when his value is sky high.

QUOTE(G&T @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:31 PM) No, that play did start the inning, it was the stupid throws that took away possible double plays. This has been a team effort. Doesn't matter, if you get the speedy guy leading off the inning out on a ROUTINE grounder to 1B, it changes the complexion of that inning. Vazquez SUCKS out of the stretch. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:32 PM) This might be true, but you are going to have the same problem with his innings next year. I can't wait for Ozzie to have the shortest leash in history on him next year. I might have to take a vacation from this board for a long time if we end up trading Garland instead of Garcia or Vaz.

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:31 PM) Javy is a loser plain and simply...his "Stuff" isn't that good either...sorry folks, but how many times does he hang an off-speed pitch? There are TONS of players in the minors who can throw a good curve ball 1/3 of the time. I've been saying all year that his stuff is very overrated.
-
You have to laugh at Vazquez b****ing about a call that wasn't even close.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:29 PM) Santana is a great pitcher, but we look absolutely like little leaguers against him. Not everyone struggles to score a single run against him like we do. We make him look this way, because we are only looking for a single pitch and trying to just hit it hard. We need more line drive swings and a lot less of the lets hit a dong off of Santana routine and we would succeed better. Paul Konerko is the goat of this game so far. He's the only one who looks like he has no clue, and his error more than likely directly led to us losing this game.

QUOTE(soxyess @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:28 PM) Why the f**k is Alomar on this team. This guy is an automatic out. He cant throw anybody out. We couldnt have found another catcher? But we needed someone to be a scapegoat for Buehrle!
-
That inning symbolizes a lot of our problems this year. Leadoff guy gets on, you get a 2 out hit, and you still don't score after the called 3rd strike.

I'm just thrilled that Ozzie played Sandy over AJP today. Does Ozzie not read his own quotes about playing his normal starting 9, besides Ozuna today, for this entire road trip?
-
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:24 PM) Now that I can agree with. I think he should have been given the chance right away this year, but the trade for Javy blew that. I think that KW didn't believe he was going to re-sign both Garland and Contreras in the offseason, and he was planning on trading one of them if they didn't re-sign. Once they both re-signed, KW got caught with his pants down.
-
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:24 PM) Look, Javy's been a tool. We all know that. It's an understatement, in fact. But, given the situation as it exisits TODAY he has to stay where he is. I hate to say it, but Javy's going to be here a while. Now Freddy, on the other hand... I completely agree with this. And there's no doubt in my mind I'd rather have Vazquez next year than Garcia.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:21 PM) He got absolutely torched his first stint up. When he came back in September, he was decent, but he won't do it again this season for two reasons - 1 - he isn't stretched out, and 2 - he's been scouted now and he will be eaten alive in a starter's role if he's put there this season. I know it's a lost cause for him to start the rest of this season. I put absolutely no stock into his first few starts last year, as he wasn't pitching with all of his pitches. When he came back up, he was showing that he could definitely be an effective starter at this level. If we're going to judge guys based on how they looked when they first came up, then KW should have never let Brian Anderson be our starting CF at the beginning of this year after how awful he looked last year.
-
We'd be winning this division if the Tigers finalized that trade with Arizona for Vazquez over the offseason.
-
QUOTE(CYGarland @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:18 PM) Cant totally blame Javy for this one, PK has had a rough game, and Pablo's D in LF has been far from impressive. He still gave up 4 rocket hits that inning.
-
QUOTE(G&T @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:18 PM) Mental mistakes. There were two that inning, by throwing to the wrong base, it took away DP chances and made the inning worse. Luckily the play at home saved a run, but those mistakes are ridiculous. If Tim Raines is in charge of our base running and outfield defense this season, then I'm thrilled he's not being brought back next season.
-
QUOTE(CYGarland @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:17 PM) When anyone of those guys start, its a crapshoot. Jose and Jon are the only consistent pitchers we have. Its gonna be tough down the stretch thats for sure.........Alright we need to try and chip away here, we still have a SLIGHT chance in this one, but we cant afford to give up anymore runs Contreras has been anything but consistent over the past few months.
-
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:16 PM) He's the anti-stopper. I swear to God he's an automatic starter of losing streaks. Here's the question I would love to hear answered: what did McCarthy not do last season that made KW/Ozzie feel like he couldn't be a starting pitcher this season?
-
QUOTE(Wedge @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:15 PM) As bad as Javy was, really the defense didn't help him much. PK's error and two poor decisions on throws from the outfield contributed to this mess, too. For as good as our defense was last year, it has sucked this season. Even plays that aren't being called errors are really putting us in a bad position.
-
QUOTE(G&T @ Aug 20, 2006 -> 07:15 PM) Nothing is even moving anymore. Everything is nice and flat. He can't believe KW was suckered into believing this perennial loser was going to turn things around for us.

The good news it that Vazquez's next start will be against this same Twins team!
-
As someone else on this site has noted, Vazquez is the momentum killer.
-
3 straight batters for the Twins have swung at the first pitch. Can we please never see Sandy catch for Vazquez?
-
Every single offspeed pitch this inning has been up in the zone. Uribe should have made that play...but what else is new for our defense?
