  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 04:48 PM) Do you think one reason they got Griffey were games like this to sit Thome down and try to keep that option from vesting? Wouldn't that be counter productive? Jim Thome has been this team's 3rd best hitter, sitting him down in favor of a lesser hitter is only going to hurt your team. If his option vests, the Phillies should pay about half his salary so if you don't want him around you sell him off to an AL team on the cheap. I'm sure there would be some interest.
  2. Thome out, Griffey DHing. I assume the lineup will look a little something like this; OC - SS AJ - C CQ - LF JD - RF PK - 1B KG - DH NS - CF AR - 2B JU - 3B
  3. He already vetoed the deal, he's staying in San Diego.
  4. QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 8, 2008 -> 10:28 AM) I still hold a little hope that he somehow might get to Type A (granted it's below 5%). So I guess Type B is the best we can hope for. Better than nothing I suppose. Not a chance in hell.
  5. So I'm assuming here: OC, SS AJ, C CQ, LF JT, DH PK, 1B KG, RF NS, CF AR, 2B JU, 3B
  6. QUOTE (DBAH0 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 02:33 PM) So would a team have to give up a draft pick to sign Uribe if he was a "B" free agent No Losing a type B free agent gets you a sandwich pick Signing a type B free agent costs you nothing
  7. Jim Thome is 6th in HR and 12th in OPS in the American League. His OPS+ is 134. Thank god he wasn't released in May.
  8. QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:26 PM) If he played for New York or Boston, he'd make it. See Billy Pierce vs. Whitey Ford. Then why can't Jim Rice get in? Compare his 162 game averages to those of Harold Baines.
  9. QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:15 PM) Then never mention career numbers. His 162 game averages were .289/.356/.465, 22 HR, 93 RBI, 120 OPS+. and he rarely devaited from that. Shame his knees did not hold out, or we would have been talking first ballot or not. That's a good baseball player but not one of the greatest of all time. If you put him in the hall of fame then you're awarding him for playing forever because his single season numbers are nothing special. Personally I'd be more inclined to induct a player who was great for 10 years then flamed out over a player who was good to very good for 20 seasons. And Harold really has nothing else to hang his hat on, he was never considered a dominant offensive presence (finished in the top 10 of MVP voting twice in 22 seasons), wasn't much of a defender, didn't steal any bases, didn't lead a team to a world series, never won a world series and has no star power. If you put him in the hall of fame you're awarding him for sticking around forever via the DH spot and hitting doubles and singles.
  10. QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:10 PM) 2,866 hits isn't veterans' committee worthy? No especially when he played for 22 seasons. I don't hold accumulators in as high regard as some.
  11. Harold Baines doesn't have anywhere near hall of fame numbers.
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 10:13 PM) If he could keep up the .338 batting average he's had since May 8, then the OBP would take care of itself. 20-30 walks would still put him at a solid .360 or .370 clip. But no matter how sexy he is, it's just hard to believe that batting average is sustainable. The other issue is he doesn't take a lot of pitches, but that's another matter. My word, since May 8 when he bottomed out he has an .880 OPS. Some pretty interesting numbers regarding Ramirez: Alexei has struckout 39 times this season, only 3 of those were looking. Alexei sees 3.17 pitches per plate appearance, that's well below average which is 3.80. Swisher sees 4.52, Cabrera: 3.49. Alexei swings at 61% of the pitches he sees. League average is 45%. Alexei makes contact on 80% of his swings which is exactly league average. Alexei swings at the first pitch about 50% of the time. League average: 28%, Nick Swisher: 15%, OC: 29%, CQ: 35%, AJ: 38% Bottom line: Alexei Ramirez REALLY likes to swing the bat.
  13. QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:42 PM) Soriano averages about 30 walks a year... I think Ramirez can average around that many a year. And the only reason Soriano hasn't been moved out of the leadoff spot is because he refuses to.
  14. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:09 PM) Dotel has been nails this season. NAILS!
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 08:03 PM) 49 pitches for Danks through 4. Huge. 60 through 5
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 07:53 PM) I can't believe the Giants were really considering trading Lincecum for Rios. It would have been the ultimate Sabean trade. I can't get over how horrendous this Blue Jays lineup is. .672 - 2B .706 - DH .757 - CF .779 - 1B .745 - C .870 - LF (147 AB) .774 - 3B .669 - RF .491 - SS JP Riccardi should be forced to resign.
  17. Crede scratched from Charlotte's lineup once again tonight. He's gonna have to play eventually, a player can only stay on a rehab assignment for 20 days.
  18. Final Line: 6 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K The Blue Jays might have the worst lineup in the American League, it's embarrassing. David f***ing Eckstein DH'd today. 1 hitter with a .780+ OPS (Lind) and a couple with sub .700's.
  19. He settled in nicely. 4H 3R 3ER 2BB 4K in 6+. After allowing 3 hits in the first he held the Blue Jays hitless for the next 4 innings. A leadoff single in the 7th ended his night. All in all a very nice debut for Gio against a horrible offensive ballclub.
  20. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 4, 2008 -> 03:00 AM) What kind of message is it sending to pick up on a starter the team youre currently trailing in the division doesn't want? That doesn't sound like a move a first place team would make. Kinda hard for a first place team to pick up a starter from a team ahead of them in the division.
  21. QUOTE (BearSox @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 09:22 PM) I have a question, if we buyout Griffey's final year, can we still offer him arb. and receive comp. if he signs else where. If so, we could be looking at anywhere between 4-6 extra draft picks next year. Of course we won't be using all of them as I fully expect us to sign 1 or 2 type a or b FA's. I see us making a run at the O-Dog, however, I think he will stay in Arizona. Arizona has traded away all their 2B prospects, so that leads me to believe they will do everything in their power to keep him. I wouldn't mind seeing us bring back Garland to a 3 year contract worth anywhere between 30-40 million. Yes. 2 if he's a type A and 1 sandwich if he's a type B. And you don't lose a draft pick for signing a type B free agent, the old team just gets a sandwich pick. Right now the Sox are looking at possibly 7-8 picks if everything goes right (which it won't.) 2 for Cabrera 2 for Thome (vesting option not withstanding) 1-2 for Griffey 1 for Crede (assuming he holds his Type B rating) 1 for Uribe (assuming he doesn't accept arb and somehow holds his Type B rating)
