QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 05:33 PM) I read something on the MLB dodgers boards, from the DallasMorningNews, the the Rangers are apparently asking for Billingsley, Loney, and Clayton Kershaw for Tex (possibly Otska or Gagne included in the package). That my friends would be a much steeper price than a deal involving any one of those guys for Dye. I know Tex is younger and having a better season but he too is a FA at the end of the year and Bmore is reportedly willing to offer the moon for him. Coming into 2007 Teixeira only had 4 years of service time so he should be arbitration eligible after this season meaning his first free agent year will be after '08. He did sign a 2 year contract before the '06 season but that only covered his first 2 years of arbitration. So unless Scott Boras has found a way around the 3 year arbitration rule, Teixeira would be under LA's control for another season after this one.

According to Ed Farmer Mark Buehrle says "nothing is going on."

5:00 update and the Score is still at it. "The Score has learned that the deal is close."

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 05:34 PM) I want Matt Kemp and bad. He's extremely talented and projects differently than any of our other outfield prospects. He should hit for power, has a good eye, decent speed and good all around tools. He'd be an outstanding fit to go with a young guy like Sweeney and hopefully a power guy to play the other outfield position next year. It's so tough to project any sort of outfield at this point since your leadoff man has to come from somewhere and if you have a Kemp/Sweeney/powerguy outfield your leadoff hitter is going to have to come from the middle infield which could be tough.

Just for the record WSCR is sticking by their story.

QUOTE(watchtower41 @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 05:26 PM) Well I guess the Diamondback fanbase is very easily amused because I dont see "Baseball America's" projection holding up too well with his phat .246 BA and .285 OBP, when he does actually play. Milledge was the top prospect in baseball for year(s), is anybody saying that now?? I'd take Lastings in a heartbeat over Young, and yes, I think he could be had in a deal for Javy. Milledge was never rated any higher than 9th, he was never the TOP prospect in baseball. I'm kind of done with this discussion, if you'd like you an go back and read the previous 3 pages in this thread for any Chris Young discussion. I've pretty much made all the points I have to.

QUOTE(Linnwood @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 05:10 PM) So is there anything new? Last time I checked this thread it was 23 pages... and I don't care to read twenty-some pages.... Sadly the title/sub title of the thread is where we currently stand.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 05:03 PM) I know his minor league numbers, but that doesn't mean it will translate to the majors. No one ever said they were guaranteed to but those minor league numbers coupled with his tools are why he's so highly touted.
-
QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 05:02 PM) So why aren't you a Chris Young fan? Just something about him, I don't see him ever being a great player since he'll probably never post high OBPs. I always thought he'd achieve his floor (Mike Cameron) rather than his ceiling (Griffey-type). The numbers are great and all but I had no problem letting him go for Vazquez and I still think it was a good trade to this day.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 05:01 PM) Is he awesome defensively? I haven't seen him play, so I really don't have a clue. I love Crede's defense as much as his clutch hits. He's above average defensively with outstanding speed.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 04:59 PM) It isn't bad for a rookie, but is that really 12th best and good enough to be a fan fave? That is just hard to believe for me. Either the standards have lowered or Arizona fans are very easy to please. Not to mention the 3 walkoffs, .450 SLG% and 25 X-base hits. He put up near 30/30 numbers in a pitcher's park at Birmingham at age 21 and a near .900 OPS as a 22 year old in AAA last year. Incredibly impressive stuff.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 04:53 PM) really? A .250 hitter with an OBP of .285? That equals 12th best and an Arizona fan favorite? They must be easy to please. He's 23 years old, has 3 walkoff homeruns this year and is posting an 85 OPS+. If Sweeney could do such things while having the same upside as Young he'd probably be a fan favorite in Chicago.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 04:51 PM) ....sureeeeeeeeeee you're not. I could care less what you think.

QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 04:49 PM) ...talk about "man-crushes" and everyone gets hot under the collar! I'm not even a Chris Young fan.
-
QUOTE(watchtower41 @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 04:31 PM) Why what have any of these guys done since they left?? I'd hope to get better value. The Chris Young man-crush needs to stop on this board. Carlos Beltran he is not. Hell, he'd be happy to have the skill of Hunter Pence. He was rated the 12th best prospect in the game by Baseball America in February. Good luck getting better value than that for Vazquez. To say it's simply a "man-crush" that this board has on him is beyond ridiculous, the guy has become a fan favorite in Arizona and is considered one of the best young players in the game by the leading minor league publication. Yeah, it's probably just a man crush.

Betemit plays a pretty damn good 3B and can hold his own at SS and if you can play either of those positions you can play 2B. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 04:25 PM) My question is would you guys accept Kemp. He's had attitude issues but is extremely talented and my guess is the Dodgers would be willing to part with him. Would a Kemp and Betemeit deal be acceptable? It definitely gives you two more talented younger guys and neither are guys I'd consider deal breakers for the Dodgers. I don't think the Sox would accept Kemp.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 03:28 PM) Well he looks smart right now for taking it, but at the time many thought he had given the Cardinals exactly what Mark could be giving us right now- a hometown discount at well-below market value. Even then he was having some arm trouble and was only what? 3 years removed from major shoulder surgery? he wasn't going to make it to free agency without spending a good amount of time on the DL.

QUOTE(chiguy79 @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 03:21 PM) I don't know why everyone things 4yr/$60mm is below market. $15mm a year makes him one of the highest paid pitchers in baseball, hell even 4yr/$50mm makes him in the upper echelon...just because Zito got a huge contract doesn't mean every lefty, soft-throwing, innings eater gets $18mm/year. Per USA Today's database, only 5 of the top 25 paid players this year are pitchers and the top 25 paid players are starting at $13.25mm a year, I do believe this database is dated but it gives an idea of where top salaries are currently at. If there is a better list to search please post it. I would argue that anything more than 4yr/$60mm is paying too much and something the sox could regret in the future. http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/sa....aspx?year=2007 It's more about the years than anything else. Considering what Zito, Schmidt, Suppan and Lilly got on the free agent market Mark was looking at 6-7 years at $15-$17M per. As opposed to 4 years, $12.5M per.

QUOTE(WSoxMatt @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 03:22 PM) Chris Carpenter 5 years/$63.5M (2007-11), plus $15M 2012 club option signed extension through 2011 12/06 07:$8.5M, 08:$10.5M, 09:$14M, 10:$14.5M, 11:$15M, 12:$15M club option ($1M buyout) That was also a restructuring of a deal he had previously signed. It added more money up front and 4 years to the original deal. Carpenter was smart to take that deal, considering his injury problems he wasn't going to make it to his 2009 free agent year in 1 piece.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 03:09 PM) Oswalt signed a contract that could be described as below market value last year and he is a better pitcher then Buerhle. Buerhle is 2 and a half months off of a terrible season. Market value is a relative term. The union will not aid Buerhle should he play the season out and injure himself. As for Levine I personally can not stand the man. He seems to be the type of guy that would report something to make himself look good. The day Garcia was traded he was stating that the Sox would not be one of the teams in the running. Why would Buerhle's agent discuss anything with Levine? The agent really has nothing to gain by discussing this at length. What if the 4/$50M was the Spring Training deal and one the Buerhle camp is looking to take or work off of. Oswalt signed a 5 year, $73M deal. That's one of the largest contracts ever given to a non-free agent pitcher. Top 3 I believe.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 03:00 PM) What about WSCR. "Mark Buehrle fans will regale over this news . . . the Score has learned Buehrle is close to signing a 4 year contract extension." Yep.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 02:40 PM) According the Trib the Cubs were willing to eat $6.6 of the $7.2 million left on Jones deal. Heck for $600,000, Jones is an interesting proposition, depending on who the Cubs are interested in prospect wise. That would free up some money to pursue other placers. Zell nixed the deal because the Marlins were asking for $6.6M and Trib Co. was only willing to pay $1M. They're not going to eat much money beyond this season with the team up for sale. At least that's what Levine was saying last night and Murphy mentioned over and over this afternoon.

QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jun 27, 2007 -> 02:39 PM) yeah, its about 5 million less than what he could make per year on the open market, but not all baseball players are greedy snobs, some are just good guys. Maximizing your value on the free agent market does not make you a greedy snob.
