  1. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 11:08 PM) Don't you think he was speaking specifically about Barett who made a baserunning blunder either in this game or last game and then couldn't catch a pitch from Zambrano and proceeds to throw the ball into left field? I think he was and he was almost excusing Zambrano for his behavior or giving Zambrano an excuse as to why it happened. Can you imagine if this happened on the White Sox? Everyone here would be saying Ozzie has lost the team, he needs to go, blah blah blah. I can't imagine what would be going on if this happened with the White Sox, but most on here would be calling for Ozzie's head. On the other hand, it happens to our cross town rivals and most here "feel sorry for" Lou Pinella. Very strange. Considering there were about 6 misplayed balls by Cubs players in today's game alone I don't think he was speaking of any one player specifically. After watching the Murton/Jones/Soriano suck train today I don't see how you can infer such things from Lou's post game comments. It sounded like he was just pissed off after watching a group of mediocre players wearing blue pin stripes boot balls all around Wrigley for 3 hours. And define "most". Is most the 3 or so posters who said they felt sorry for him? Kind of a small sample size don't you think?
  2. QUOTE(gosox41 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 11:12 PM) He also has never won more then 16 games in a season which makes me wonder why he's an ace. Bob Probably because there are more important stats than wins. And for most people when talking about an ace caliber player 2 things are taken into consideration, statistical production and pitching talent (stuff). Both of which Zambrano has. He's also still only 26 years old (a year younger than second year player Rich Hill for example.) It's pretty much impossible to answer this question the way you worded it. If he were to fit the budget that means he'd make something along the lines of 4 years, $12-$14M per (a contract he would never sign) if you can sign a pitcher as talented as Carlos Zambrano to a deal that cheap you have to do it. If we get into more realistic numbers say 7 years, $17M per then no, I'd probably take a pass.
  3. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 10:33 PM) Correct me if I'm wrong, but Owens (outside of Suck Gonzalez) is the youngest position player the Sox have at the ripe age of 27-28..... Jerry Owens is 26 and 1.5 years younger than the soon to be 28 year old Uribe.
  4. I think it's safe to say, the fuse is lit.
  5. QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 08:35 PM) Does the street view only work for the cities with the camera on them? Yeah, San Francisco, Denver, las Vegas, Miami and New York.
  6. The Sox are 3-0 in games in which Jerry Owens starts and records a hit.
  7. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 01:58 PM) Here's my thinking: with the Sox likely replacing Crede with Josh Fields this offseason, that should really clear up a lot of payroll. If the Sox don't bring back Buehrle, they better be in the hunt for guys like Ichiro. Ichiro is going to make an insane amount of money this offseason and he deserves every penny. As of May 6th Ichiro had a season line of .260/.330/.385/.715 just terrible especially for his standards. He's had atleast 1 hit in the 24 games since then including 15 multi-hit games, a couple of 3 hit games and a 5 hit game. His line over that span? .411/.447/.505/.952. He's 44 for his last 107 and has raised his season line to .336/.389/.445/.834. I want Ichiro Suzuki more than any other free agent since Griffey.
  8. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 02:21 PM) In the short term, the sox might have to bite the bullet and deal for a guy like Dukes. Acquiring immediate talent comes with a price--either in prospects which could hurt the team in the long run. Or at the price of getting a guy of questionable character. The hole the sox are in now, getting Dukes who plays hard on the field yet has big time off the field issues might be worth it People thought it was risky when he brought in AJ? Kenny Williams would never bring in such a despicable human being.
  9. QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 02:13 PM) That's usually what happens when 2/3 of your starting outfield goes down with injuries. And with no warning. Who woulda thunk that 2 healthy young bucks like Podsednik and Erstad wouldn't even make it to June before hitting the DL.
  10. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 01:04 PM) 2007 offseason- 1) Re-sign Buerhle to a 4 year 54$ million dollar contract. 2)Sign Aaron Rowand to a 2 year 11$ million dollar contract 3) Sign Luis Castillo to play 2B and to replace Gooch as he walks via free agency 4) Sign 2 'Reliable' veteran relievers for the pen. 5) Let Masset and Gio battle it out for the final spot in the rotation. Your younger and hungrier Chicago White Sox Owens RF Castillo 2B Thome DH Konerko 1B Pierzynski C Fields 3B Rowand CF Uribe SS Sweeney LF Rotation: Buerhle, Garland, Vazquez, Danks, Massett or Gio Pen: Jenks (CL), Thorton, MacDougle, (3 free agent veterans) Okay i got bored sorry! 1.) Rowand is not worth $5.5M a year, mediocre players such as himself should not be rewarded with such lucrative deals. 2.) Sign 2 reliable relievers? There's what? Like 5 truly reliable relievers currently in baseball? Middle Relief is the biggest crapshoot in all of sports. There's really no such thing as a consistently reliable middle reliever. 3.) An outfield of Owens, Rowand and Sweeney is probably the least potent in all of baseball. A team with a $100M+ payroll should never have such a terrible collection of outfielders.
  11. Rowand? He's been pretty damn good this year. .321/.393/.500/.893 that's a pretty terrific line. Say, what has he done since oh, May 6th? G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB IBB SO HBP SH SF GDP SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS 23 97 87 17 22 6 0 2 11 5 0 15 2 1 2 4 1 1 .253 .302 .391 .693 Oh, that bad huh? Yeah it turns out Aaron Rowand does suck afterall.
  12. QUOTE(SoxAce @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 12:44 AM) Now that's more specific. I figured that was implied.
  13. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 12:31 AM) I saw Messenger pitch on Wednesday vs Cubs, and he was very impressive. To be honest, he looked a lot like what Jenks does this year. 96 mph fastball with a sharp curve. Benitez looks terrible this season. I can't stand his attitude, and he's such an obvious former steroid user. He's pretty much a right handed version of Andy Sisco from what I've seen. Big heat, nice slider and absolutely pathetic, mind bogglingly horrid control.
  14. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 12:25 AM) I'll guarantee that the Sox will bring back Erstad next season, even if he doesn't meet his option incentives. $3.5M, that's how much he'd cost to bring back assuming he doesn't reach 600 PAs. That's just peachy.
  15. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 1, 2007 -> 12:26 AM) I wonder if we might have been discussing a Benitez for MacDougal type of trade. Of course, Benitez was traded to the Marlins late tonight. And the Giants picked up most all of his ~$5.1M salary for Randy f***ing Messenger.
  16. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ May 31, 2007 -> 11:39 PM) Konerko. And you have a terribly skewed view of what is a successful rookie season. Bingo. And the last Sox rookie to put up numbers even close to 18, 65 and .779 was Carlos Lee in '99 when he managed 16, 84 and .775. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ May 31, 2007 -> 11:43 PM) If you read my post correctly you'll see that I had no problem with CY's numbers. I just feel that some of the people on this board would be ripping him left and right if he were with us. Then they're out of their f***ing minds and should be ignored anyway.
  17. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ May 31, 2007 -> 11:37 PM) Young is on pace for about 18 homers and 60 RBI's, with a .277/.314/.465. I'm not saying that's bad for a rookie, I just get the feeling that if Sweeney or Fields were to put up those numbers a lot of people on this board wouldn't be very happy, that's all. Are you s***ting me? 18, 60 and a .779 OPS from a White Sox rookie would be a miracle. Hell, I got excited when Sweeney hit ~.260 for about 7 games.

  19. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 31, 2007 -> 11:14 PM) not And a lot of folks would be shocked if he put up those exact same numbers facing the Twins, Indians and Tigers for 57 games out of the season...not to mention the rest of the AL is so much stronger than the NL Central and NL West. The question is not whether or not he'd be able to put up the same numbers in the other league it's whether Chris Young's current offensive production would be acceptable coming from Josh Fields this season which it would be.
  20. QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ May 31, 2007 -> 11:07 PM) Chris Young has a .314 obp right now. I think he's going to be a good player, but if Fields came up and put up those kind of numbers everyone would be ready to crucify him. He also has a .779 OPS and 100 OPS+ both of which would be good for second best on this current Sox team. If Fields were to put up league average numbers for the first 2 months of this season much as Chris Young is doing now, I would be absolutely elated. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 31, 2007 -> 11:09 PM) Young has 18 extra basehits and is slugging .465. He's already a league average hitter in his first full season in the bigs. I'd kill for a Sox prospect to perform so well. His 18 XBH and .465 SLG would also be second best on this Sox team.
  21. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 31, 2007 -> 10:28 PM) .350 That's where Erstad was as our leadoff hitter coming into the last couple of games, not sure exactly where he's at now.
  22. QUOTE(RockRaines @ May 31, 2007 -> 10:12 PM) I guess im the only one excited at maybe seeing Owens get extended time leading off? If he is the one that gets the call it should be fun seeing him in action. I like most have serious doubts about his future upside but there's no denying the numbers he's putting up in that bandbox at AAA this season. Lets just hope Ozzie sticks with him at the top of the order as long as possible.
  23. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ May 31, 2007 -> 09:58 PM) Technically...I believe Mr. Thome's 2008 season is an option year at $14 million. We wouldn't get anything back in the way of draft picks if he walked, and for all I know there was some unwritten agreement related to picking that up if he was traded...but still, if we're really looking to rebuild and slash payroll... Read the spreadsheet in my sig because you're actually mistaken on this one. QUOTE(caulfield12 @ May 31, 2007 -> 09:56 PM) Thome doesn't do much good, due to the fact that we won't be competitive again until 2009 or 2010, so you have to try to get younger eventually. Trading for Mark Teixeira does not help you get younger, the guy will walk after the 2008 season.
