Alfonso Soriano just went deep.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 11:31 AM) How often do these BIG trades actually happen? It seems that the more speculation there is on a deal involving big names, it never happens during the season. Everybody sits around waiting and getting anxious, then nothing happens. Carlos Beltran comes to mind.

QUOTE(ChiSox9 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 10:48 AM) I still hold my ground with CLee driving the market down. Melvin has not made any statements as of yet in regards to the status of CLee so anything is possible. Buster Olney seconds your theory on SportsCenter this morning. I gotta say I do agree with it.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 09:59 AM) Great idea! But since they shipped out Gathright, I doubt they would trade him. Plus, I don't think he is showing 100% of his speed yet...he has been out of baseball for about a year and a half. That being said, if the Rays put him on the market...GO GET 'IM! I really don't know if he's available at all, I basically just threw his name out there because he's barely been talked about on the trade front so I wanted to toss someone out there who's "under the radar". That being said, I really don't see Rocco getting dealt but if he is, you heard it here first damnit. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 10:00 AM) I agree, the bullpen is set up in decent shape. Adding to the rotation basically would mean adding BMac to it rather than via trade. Nothing out there would be much of an upgrade. The sox will probably have to wait out the slump in the rotation. LF is where the sox could upgrade, provided a #1 or a #2 hitter could play there. Crawford would be the absolute ideal and set the sox up for a decade. Though any potential trade would just start with Bmac, Fields and Broadway [and prob. 2 more pitchers]. As the Sox would have to look to upgrade at leadoff and LF in the offseason, why not make a play now for Crawford? Umm, that's pretty excessive, that's one of the top offensive prospects in all of baseball (#1 Sox spect), a young stud arm, another top 5-10 Sox prospect (Broadway is probably the #1 pitching spect in the Sox system now that Lummy is gone) and then you have 2 more pitchers? Naw, they want a lot but they won't be finding anyone who's going to give them anything like that.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 09:44 AM) Baldelli may not be available. But I do see KW trying to get the best available right handed hitting Ofer, who can play Lf and possibly CF, and who can hit #1 or #2 in the lineup. Having mack play Cf and Ozuna LF isn't going to cut it defensively or offensively. With Pods basically a platoon player now, upgrading LF and getting new blood at the top of the lineup could be a priority [with little pitching available, better to improve the defense and offense]. If not this yr, then in the offseason, this could be addressed. See, that's why I mentioned Rocco. The guy is an incredible athlete, plays great defense in CF with an above average arm, he can shift around to RF/LF as well and could leadoff if need be with his exceptional speed. Rocco still isn't displaying great plate disciplane but he has shown some very good pop since comming off the DL. Plus he's still only 24.

The Sox looked like crap as far back as the Cubs series at Wrigley, that was the end of June and they didn't look all that hot in the Orioles series that followed of which they won 3 of 4. So seeing how IMO this team started to slip around 11-12 games before the All-Star break, I highly doubt that 4 days off had much of anything to do with their new found suckiness.

Minnesota Twins Post Mortem Playoff Thread

QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Jul 27, 2006 -> 08:08 AM) I don't know what Liriano will do the rest of the way but didn't Hawk say the other night that Santana is 33-3 after the ASB in the last 3 years combined? Contrary to popular belief amoungst Sox fans, Johan Santana was far and away the best player in the second half last year, the guy just kicks it up another notch every year after the break after dominating the first half. -
Since Kenny Williams likes to work under the radar when acquiring players around the deadline I'll just throw a name out there whom I believe fits this description, Rocco Baldelli. I don't know if the D-Rays would even want to move him or if the Sox would want to acquire a player with his injury history and now contract status but I just saw some Devil Rays highlights and I am reminded as to just how much I love the guy.

You have to clean up the crede portion a bit, check the lower left hand corner of the right graphic.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 11:23 PM) I don't think any of us should be surprised that it was discussed. In theory it would fit for both teams, but I think that the price on our side was too high. I think I'm happier with the righty reliever we wound up with. Oh yeah, I agree. I'm just basically pointing it out as further proof that KW is likely shopping Josh Fields right now.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 11:21 PM) By the way, has anyone other than me noticed that Baltimore is pretty close to Washington D.C., and the White Sox are headed to Baltimore? We could even afford to pay for the gas to get Soriano to the ballpark on Friday. Well they better hurry the hell up then because Alfonso will likely be on a flight to Los Angeles around 5:30 pm ET tomorrow.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 10:48 PM) Special congratulations to Ozzie and the gang. Blowing a 6 game lead in the WC standings at the All-Star Break in less than 2 weeks is quite impressive. Isn't this basically the worst case scenerio comming true? The final game of the Twins series coinciding with the Sox relinquishing the Wild Card lead?
-
Hmm, this is something I brought up a few weeks ago, a possible swap of Fields for Linebrink. A little late but another source says that the two teams did have talks involving Josh Fields. http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/padre...26padnotes.html

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 10:17 PM) He sure sucked last time out there! I was looking at Macdougal's stats, and man, he is an insane groundball pitcher in addition to his career 8.33 K/9. It's becaue he lives and dies with his 2 seamer that thing has some insane sinking action on it along with movement in to right hand hitters, if he's spotting that thing where he wants . . . unhittable.

The Rangers are rallying against the Yanks right now, after Cordero served up 4 runs to them in the top half of the 8th the Rangers now have 2nd and 3rd with nobody out, still down 6-4. If the yankees pull this one out they will own the Wild Card Lead. And Michael Young ties this beach up at 6
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 09:38 PM) The Yankees just had no problem putting up a 4 spot in the 8th inning. 6 more outs, and we're behind in the Wild Card standings. Francisco Cordero is just god awful, I don't know what the hell happened to the guy but he just can not get anyone out (outside of Sox) this season.

I think I forgot everything I once knew about football. What has baseball done to me?

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 05:56 PM) That can't be right. I knew it was probably a relatively low number , but I wouldn't have guessed 20. I'd say close to 50-60% of games Guillen has had his opening-day lineup. It actually sounds about right. You have to remember Mackowiak has started 44 of 100 games (38 CF, 6 RF), Cintron 40 of 100 games (19 SS, 16 2B, 5 3B), Ozuna 23 of 100 games (18 LF, 3 3B, 2 2B), Widger 21 of 100 games (all at C), Gload 11 of 100 (6 RF, 5 1B), Alomar 1 of 100 games. So . . . PERCENTAGE OF SUBS: C: 22% 1B: 5% 2B: 18% (brief injury) 3B: 8% (incredibly brief injury) SS: 19% (brief injury) LF: 18% CF: 38% RF: 12% (brief injury) . . . also I'm not even taking into account DH, which I know Gload and Cintron have started at this year. Also Thome at 1B in the NL was not taken into account either.

I don't really see what's so funny about it. If you're using a wood bat you can take a bone and rub it up and down the bat (boning) filling in many of the gaps with bone hense hardening the bat. It's pretty much standard practice. I guess some of the terminology might be relatively humorous if you're in Junior High.

another turn through the rotation and we have . . . UP TO THE SECOND SP TRUST LEVELS: 1a.) Jon Garland - Jonny boy came up absolutely huge, saving the Sox from being swept by the Rangers. I now trust him more than any other starter, I feel dirty. 2.) Jose Contreras - Ok outing from the Count in a big game Vs the Twins, a pathetic 0-2 pitch to resulting in a 3 Run Homer off the top of the left field wall sealed his fate however. I guess I'm still pretty damn confident in him. - - - - - - 3.) Javier Vazquez - 5 INNINGS OF PURE DOMINATION YO! Too bad this isn't softball or Vazquez would be the spiff. He sucked but not as bad as Buehrle so he jumps into the #3 spot which isn't saying much. 4.) Mark Buehrle - 5 straight losses and he's allowed 5 runs or more in all of them, he's given up 47 hits in his last 26 2/3 innings of work. I don't know WTF is wrong with him but I don't really see an end to the suckiness in sight. - - 5.) Freddy Maddux - A fluky start from the Mad Dog nets him a notch on the board, I still have no interest in seeing him pitch for the Sox. His situation is one of utter mystery.
-
Um actually the Sox dealt Lummy and Cortez for the Righty power arm of Mike MacDougal, they gave up B.J. LaMura for Alomar. If the Sox gave up Lumsden and Cortez for Alomar, Kenny Williams would have had a hard time making it out of Chicago alive.

QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 04:09 PM) Yeah but how long before we start to see big gaps of empty seats? As far as I know it's still cool to go to Sox games now a days so I doubt we'll see any change.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 04:08 PM) Hi my name is Chris Rongey. And as I look at today, we are so close to running off a 10 game win streak. have faith whitesox fans. Mark was just unable to make a big pitch, he almost got out of the game unscaithed. Our hitting is almost there. We are still in the wild card lead, and I will drink to that. We have a few months to play great baseball and rattle off 40 in a row. If you would have told KW and Ozzie that the Sox would be going into August still not having played their best ball yet but still be in this position, they'd take it in a second. Remember they still have the 3rd best record in baseball . . . high five?

QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 04:07 PM) how long before attendence drops? The tickets are already sold.
