  1. Pierre stays no matter what. If Ozzie ever makes Viciedo the starting LF, Brent hits Lilliwaivers.
  2. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 17, 2011 -> 02:08 PM) I get the premise and am not trying to turn this into some huge deal. I still just think it's funny to say a player is worth financially almost double the largest contract given ever in baseball. Money is such a big deal in constructing teams, so I think it should be kept in such realistic terms. It is funny to say that, because you are comparing apples and oranges. Most contracts given to good players are multi-year, and as Balta said earlier, take the possibilities of injury and performance decline into account. It would be foolish for a team to pay a player multiple years assuming no injury will occur, and the player will outperform his career averages every season. You cannot compare a one-year WAR dollar value to one salary year of a long term contract as you continue to do. And Bautista is on pace to have the highest single-season OPS+ in the history of baseball. That is why if you extrapolate based on his current pace, you end up with unprecedented figures. The money in these WAR value equations is kept in the most realistic of terms. It is based on extensive research and data analysis. Just because you get a high dollar value for one season, does not mean a play can command that amount on a per year basis in a long-term contract.
  3. Don't get caught up in what he's actually making or debate what he should be making. It's more about what he's producing. From the amount of runs Bautista is creating, we can estimate how many wins are generated. And from there, put a monetary value on how much that many wins typically costs a team via free agency. That is how his value to a baseball team is determined. Not by his salary. And the win value in dollars wasn't created to suggest that is exactly how a player should be compensated.
  4. QUOTE (JohnCangelosi @ May 17, 2011 -> 01:34 PM) This move is right up there with starting Kotsay everyday for virtually the whole season. Not even close. QUOTE (onedude @ May 17, 2011 -> 01:34 PM) More K's than hits so far in the minors... Power hitters tend to do that. Like Dunn has every single year.
  5. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 17, 2011 -> 11:53 AM) Then why was his highest salary less than half of that? How can you be worth a contract that nobody in the history of baseball has ever earned? You're right. Baseball teams are always paying their players exactly in accordance with their true value. Just ask Zito, Soriano, or Wells.
  6. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ May 17, 2011 -> 09:43 AM) LOL at any stat that puts a player's worth at $70M for one season. Why is it funny. Year after year, teams pay about four and a half million on the free agent market per win. If I had said a guy on pace for a 1 WAR season and subsequently a $4.5M value, you wouldn't have batted an eye. A player producing 15 times that (not that Bautista will be there at the end of the season, it's just his current pace) would be worth 15 times as much.
  7. QUOTE (chw42 @ May 17, 2011 -> 12:19 AM) He has 4 WAR already? Holy s***. When I declared Bautista would be worth his new $65M contract, I must admit even I did not think he would provide that value in ONE SEASON (currently on pace for 15.4 wins, over $70M).
  8. QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ May 15, 2011 -> 11:15 PM) Does every player get tested? I thought it was random. http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/pa/pdf/jda.pdf And, in addition to these, 1200 more random tests are done. Then there is also a board which may declare a specific test is in order which does not count to any of the above numbers.
  9. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 15, 2011 -> 04:45 PM) Is Jose Bautista even a real person? This is f***in absurd. Southsider2k5 does not think so. But obviously he passed last years tests since we did not hear anything. So unless he is on HGH, which would devastate me, he is human.
  10. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 15, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) STOP PITCHING TO JOSE BAUTISTA Seriously, he deserves the Bonds treatment at this point. I get that Adam Lind and Edwin Encarnacion can hit home runs too, but they don't beat you at near the regularity as Bautista. He is absolutely ridiculous right now. Can you imagine if Williams had actually been able to acquire him last year? I am fapping vigorously. Today will be the 14th straight game for Bautista with a positive WPA. That is 14 straight games his play improved the Jays' odds of winning the game. It is insanity.
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 23, 2011 -> 02:54 PM) Jose Bautista has reached base 10 straight times. Single in the 8th on Wednesday, 3 hits and 2 walks yesterday, and 3 hits and 1 walk today. Of course, he's only stayed on base 7 of those times. The other 3 he got to trot around real slow. He's like really, really f***ing good re: Jose Bautista's extension QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 11:21 AM) Yeah, no way I am signing Brady Anderson to that kind of a deal. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 11:33 AM) Didn't they learn their lesson with Wells? I know this nowhere near as much money, but no thanks to that deal. Maybe they are assuming the Angels will trade for him in 2013. QUOTE (3E8 @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 07:15 PM) Confirmation the Jays think Bautista is as legit as I do. I wouldn't have gone five years though. But other than the hernia, he has been injury free. He will be worth that contract. I had another post where I explained exactly why Bautista's emergence came out of nowhere, but I cannot find it. Currently leading baseball in HR and OPS.

    2011 Films Thread

Four Lions, a movie I recommended in here awhile ago, is now streaming on Netflix. You should watch it. It's about a group of jihadists, and it's a comedy.
  13. This guy Smith for Butler has the worst hands ever.

Anyone ever left/received a drunk message this bad?
  15. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 1, 2011 -> 09:14 PM) J.P Arencibia JOSE BAUTISTA
  16. That was a high fastball, he tommyhawked it way the hell out there.

    2011 Music Thread

The Sounds' new album is really good. Recommended for fans of indie/new wave/dance. You might remember one of their songs from that Geico commercial with the cavemen on motorcycles.

I had to talk with people in person. It was horrific.
  19. Relatively great teams? Good teams? You get my point.
  20. I think Butler has everything but a high seed. Two stars, great coach, beaten great teams in this tourney, big game experience, etc. I am very excited for the Butler/VCU game.
  21. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Mar 27, 2011 -> 03:27 PM) Wow, if VCU holds onto the lead they have a pretty beatable opponent to make the championship game... that would be pretty amazing Butler is pretty beatable?
  22. QUOTE (Ron @ Mar 20, 2011 -> 09:01 PM) I'm kinda glad Ozze's pissed. Peavy's all "I'm feeling good," "Only regular pitching soreness," but now all the sudden he admits he's been feeling this since after the Angels game? The dude isn't just playing Russian Roulette with his recovery, but with the preparation necessary for the season. It's kinda selfish. That's our dirtbag! :laughtrack
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 09:51 PM) By not many people, I believe you mean Ozzie. It's hard not to believe it when you have 1421 PAs against righties at an .857 OPS and 528 PAs against lefties with a .773 OPS. With that type of sample size, you have to respect his platoon splits. Several SABRs aren't buying into it either. Quentin's BABIP against LHP is
  24. He'd be a perfect platoon with Quentin if you believe Carlos' reverse splits are legit. But not many people do.
