Considering what the Soxtalk community thinks would be an acceptable package for Danks, your reaction to what the Reds had to give up for Latos surprises me. Latos is as good if not better than Danks, three years younger, and under control for four years. Also, he's not a product of Petco. His home/road splits are identical.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Dec 17, 2011 -> 01:40 AM) Does everyone that makes these lists need reminding that the organization also includes a former Baseball America #4 & #5 ranked player from the Marlins? Martinez and especially Marinez are at least in the Sox top 10. I don't think we do need reminding. Those prospects were ranked #4/#5 in a year the Marlins' farm system was one of the worst in the league. And neither player earned those rankings, both having disappointing 2011 seasons. Sickles had them both as C+ prospects. They belong outside even the White Sox top 10.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 16, 2011 -> 11:15 AM) Seemed to really like Saladino. I am OK with that. He had one of the highest wOBAs of any regular in the Carolina League, in which he was one of the younger players. This from a premium position which he seems to play well enough to stick. I'm surprised he's not higher on the list. I'll be watching Saladino and Molina's stats closely next year.

QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 14, 2011 -> 10:33 AM) Should. Have. Cleaned. House. Are you suggesting Cooper should have been let go?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 14, 2011 -> 09:38 AM) So...random thought... If Cooper was angling for an extension early in 2011, why wasn't it just given to him? Good question. He's worth many, many times whatever he makes.

The Blue Jays benefited from addition by subtraction with Rios because we simply took his contract in exchange for nothing. We couldn't accomplish that with Dunn or Rios now. The better strategy is get the best prospects we can, and hope for rebounds from Dunn/Rios. It's actually the only strategy. No team is taking Dunn/Rios. Peavy could actually be worth his salary this year if he stays healthy. Big if, though.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Dec 12, 2011 -> 12:29 PM) The Yankees would also be in a position to gain compensation even if he leaves. As long as he's traded for before the season starts and they make him a qualifying offer at the end of the year. And that compensation has been shown to have average potential surplus value of about $8 million (~2 wins).

KW was also at a function organized for the purpose of facilitating convenient conversations between himself and other general managers. It's not like he has to list all the teams in alphabetical order and start calling though the list to gauge interest. Who knows exactly what process KW went through. But when the team whose closer signed the biggest offseason contract (for relievers) to play elsewhere says they weren't made aware of Sergio's availability, questions get raised.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Dec 11, 2011 -> 12:11 PM) Don't completely disagree, but "targeting" specific prospects has served Kenny well. Jon Garland, John Danks and Gavin Floyd come to mind. All well-undervalued by the teams who traded them. Of course, there are exceptions too. Personally, I'm glad we didn't entertain trades with BoSox or Yanks, who routinely get their prospects overhyped by the WWL and other media outlets. This time, the "targeted" prospect is not undervalued. Molina's stock is at an all-time high. He was unknown at this point one year ago. Which is precisely why to get just him, we have to part with Santos and his friendly contract. The Sox would be better served taking advantage of our extreme strength in Don Cooper. Go for the pitching prospects who have fallen out of favor a bit that he thinks can be turned around. That way, we get something more valuable to us for less. Most of KW's best trades (not just the ones involving pitchers) have been the ones that took utilized Cooper. Coop taught Danks a cutter, Floyd a slider, changed Thornton's delivery, and resurrected Loiaza long enough to net us Contreras.

Balta and Cy, well said.

QUOTE (Jake @ Dec 10, 2011 -> 09:45 AM) Where are you seeing this? Here's the original article: http://graymatter123.blogspot.com/2011/11/...s-scouting.html

Don't forget too how young Cahill is (less than 1 year older than the prospect we just traded for). He's still several years away from his prime.
-
I didn't realize how stacked the DBacks were with pitching prospects. Dang. I like Cahill, good trade for them. They're a strong team.

QUOTE (SOXOBAMA @ Dec 9, 2011 -> 06:19 PM) What are you going to say if Santos sucks for the Blue Jays and Molina turns out to be a solid pitcher for the Sox? He's not saying that wouldn't be great. But the probability of both of those occurring is slim. Using this research, the most likely outcome for a prospect like Molina is that he will make no meaningful contribution to the big league club. That's why this is risky. I'm also feeling KW shouldn't have traded Santos this early unless he could've gotten a better return.

QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Dec 8, 2011 -> 05:32 PM) Trade Floyd? Who the hell can that really get us? A legitimate prospect at the least. Floyd's a 3 WAR starting pitcher signed below market value for the next two seasons if you include the '13 option.
-
1. No. But Hudson had a much larger body of work as a starting pitcher than Molina, and nearly 200 dominant innings at AA or above 2. Less. Jackson at the time was a 2-3 WAR pitcher, but only under control for a year and a half with over $10 million owed.

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 7, 2011 -> 10:38 AM) I have a feeling people are going to get really pissed off in this thread when they see what the A's get for Andrew Bailey. We've seen what teams will offer for relievers with a fraction of the friendliness of Sergio's contract at the trade deadline when they are over a barrel. I do not understand why to trade Santos this soon in a fair-at-best deal unless the Sox know something we don't.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 04:15 PM) A Top 50 prospect for Santos would be pretty ridiculous. Remember what the Twins gave up for Capps?
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 6, 2011 -> 04:09 PM) Who has him ranked as a Top 50 prospect? I've seen that referenced a few times now. Nobody.
-
Don't forget, under the new CBA, Danks has better odds of providing a team maximum compensation in the amateur draft should he declare himself a free agent at the end of the season. If KW can't receive a return in trade significantly better than the expected value of that draft compensation, then he should keep Danks.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 30, 2011 -> 12:50 PM) SI_JonHeyman Jon Heyman #yankees indeed among teams to inquire about available matt thornton. #chsox, #tradedeadline Not exactly difficult to figure out why Kenny is dangling Thornton, aside from the contract, frightening start to the season and our good of lefty reliever depth Matt Thornton is a hot commodity on the trade market, get a few teams bidding against each other and we could get a very nice return. Several red flags with Thornton this season. And he turns 35 in about a month. Moving him clears over $12M in future payroll obligations. Our bullpen is deep. Thornton seems the most likely White Sox moving at the deadline to me.

Domonic Brown's OPS+ is above 100, he's walking at a higher rate than league average, striking out less than league average, and his BABIP is currently at a career low. Oh and he's 23. I think if the Phils were willing to swap Brown for Q, it would've been done by now. I would of course expect an additional move to be made with the money saved from shipping guys with '11 salaries totaling nearly $20M. Aramis at 3rd appears to be the most obvious possible upgrade.
-
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 01:07 PM) Hypothetically, the Sox could have moved Jackson/Thornton/+ for Rasmus, then turned around and dealt Quentin for Dominic Brown? Umm, Brown/Rasmus/Viciedo in the outfield for a decade............. We couldn't have moved that for Rasmus. Unless the "+" is significant.

Why don't you ask Lebron to change a dollar? He'll only give you three quarters

Of games Indians have remaining that aren't against us, over 60% of them are against teams above .500. If a lot of their players don't continue to play ahead of their career averages, they will have a tough time holding on to first place.
